Homecoming

the 1989 Homecoming Weekend (Oct. 6-8) was not
only the traditional crowning of a queen after a football
game. Several members of past Susquehanna sports
teams were inducted into our hall of fame, which now
consists of 96 members. Numerous activities such as a
leadership workshop, a jazz performance and a special
Sunday service at Weber Chapel were attended by some
of 250 alumni, parents, and students. The Crusaders beat
Delaware Valley 28-22 in a competitive game, and senior,
Jennifer Ebert (upper Saddle River, NJ) was crowned
Homecoming Queen, adding to what was a splendid
weekend.

Under the direction of fourteenth-year head coach
Connie Harnum and second-year assistant coach
Jamie Rogers, the young Lady Crusaders got off to a
fast start before settling for a 4-8-2 record.

Despite the youth, senior left link Wendy Sharkus
was a repeat selection to the Middle Atlantic Con-
ference (MAC)- Northwest Section All-Stars. Sharkus
was the leader on offence, scoring a goal with three
assists during the year.

Sophomore forward Tara Encamacion also earned
selection to the MAC Fall Academic Honor Roll.

With so many players returning next year, the fu-
ture looks even brighter for the Orange and Maroon
and hopes are high for a winning record.

Despite showing good enthusiasm through-
out the season, the 1989 version of the men's
soccer team came up just short in several
games and finished 4-13 this year under third-
year head coach Terry Molloy.

At season's end, the squaa had to bid fare-
well to five seniors, John Bunting, Andy Chap-
man, Chris Cloud, Dennis McManus, and
Matt Petchel.

With an influx of some talented newcomers
and the return of a good nucleus from this
year, optimism is high that the Crusader^—

The Orange and Maroon made Middle Atiantic Conference
(MAC) history in 1989 by claiming an unprecedented fourth con-
ference championship since the MAC was reformed in 1983.

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Rocky Rees, the
Crusaders finished 8-1-1 and shared the title with Lycoming^
despite beating the Warriors 24-17 in week 9. Only a heartbreaking
loss at Widener (10-9) and a tie to Centennial Conference cham-

This fall, the Lady Crusaders combined un-
bridled enthusiasm and experience from what
senior Jennifer Davis attributes to the nucleus
of the team that has been around for years.
The Lady Crusaders finished with a 23-11
campaign that ties the school record for the
most wins set in 1984. They finished the sea-

The last season of the decade proved to be a difficult
one for the 1989 Crusader Harriers. At the start of the
season they were faced with a new coach, a new
course and a loss of three key runners. However,
through trial and determination they managered to
pull out a winning season.

Under the guidance of first year coach Bob Remally,
the young team of mosdy underclassmen matched
their 4-3 record of 1988. Led by sophomores Ken
Heffner and Rich Aussicker with the help of the return
senior Joe Carei, the team managed stolid perfor-
mances in most of their competitions. The inexpe-
rience of the young team and the first year coach led to a dis-
sap]x>inting 12th place shovdng in the 24 team field of the MAC

Women's Basketball

The Lady Crusader basketball team, started
the 1990's as a major threat in the MAC con-
ference. Coach Mark Hribar brought his
young team of mostly freshmen to a 16-10/74B
3 MAC-NW record and to the MAC playoffs.
Their 7-3 MAC-Northwest record placed thet
second in their section.

In the playoffs, the team had a disappoint
ing first round loss to the nationally ranked
University of Scranton, but the school was
nonetheless satisfied in the way this young
team has started the new decade.

For the second-straight year, the Orange and
Maroon men's tennis team was just one point away
from the best season in school history for head
coach Gary Fincke.

On the year, the team steamrolled 10 opponents,
losing only three. Unfortunately, the squad fell
short in its bid to regain the Middle Atlantic Con-
ference (MAC)-Northwest Section title, dropping a
tough 5-4 decision to powerful Albright.

Women's Tennis

1990 was a year of transition for the women's tennis
team, which finished at 3-7.

Not only did the squad have a new coach in Mary
Rae Pipa, replacing long time mentor Connie Hamum,
it also only returned one full-time starter from the
previos year's 8-5 squad.

That starter was the form of AnnMarie Innamorati,
who played at number two, three and five singles
throughout the year. Sophomore Jill Samethalso had a
spot start the previous year and used her experience in
a 5-3 year playing number four, five, and six singles as
she earned the squad's Most Valuable Player award.

With everyone returning next year, the outlook
appears good that Pipa'a squad can return to the
success of past teams.

The 1990 Lady Crusaders had many peaks and

Along the way, sophomore outfielder/third base-

setting records in hits, and stolen bases, while fin-
ishing with a team-high .538 batting average. Fellow

Although the 1990 Crusaders put
together another solid 5-1 season
and fourth place finish at the Mid-
dle Atlantic Conference (MAC)
Championships, the squad will un-
fortimately be best remembered for
its lone blemish. When Messiah
Beat Susquehanna 89.5-63.5 in a
quad meet at Amos Alonzo Stagg
Field on April 14, the men's pro-
gram made national news as it was
dealt its first loss in 11 years and
ended its 71 -meet winning streak.
With a victory in its last meet, head
coach Jim Taylor is hoping some of
his returnees can build on that vic-
tory for the fufrure.

It was a banner year for the Lady
Crusaders in 1990 as head coach
Tom Moore guided a squad of 10
performers to a school record eight
wins emd only one setback with a
respectable fourth place finish at
the Middle Atlantic Conference
(MAC)

Moore's recruiting efforts pro-
duced an abrupt turnaround from
the previous year's 0-7 record as six
of 10 performers were talented
freshman.

This year may have been only
the beginning of big things for the
women's frack team.

Under the direction of new head coach Don
Hamum, the golf team was competitive with
the beat Middle Atlantic Conference finish at
6-4.

Sophomore Rob Rohrbach was consistently
the squad's top player and earned the Low
Stroke Award with the average of 79.2 on the
year. Rob Corsetto was the team's lone seiuor
and had a solid year with an average of 85.5.

With a year of coaching the squad under his

After four years as a club team, the Lady Crusader

1989-90 DEDICATION

REES'S MAKE SUSQUEHANNA

A FAMILY AFFAIR

76

For Rocky and Patty Rees, Susquehanna
was more than just a job. It was a place to
watch their family grow.

Along the way. Rocky helped to guide his
Crusader football teams to three Middle At-
lantic Conference (MAC) championships and
a 36-15-1 record over the past five years.
There were many fond memories from those
years on the field, but if you ask Rocky, his
fondest memories would be watching his
young "puppies" grow into fine young men.
Of his many accomplishments on the field.
Rocky probably got more pleasure out of see-
ing his players succeed after graduation.

On the sidelines at the games for those five
years were the cheerleaders, who were
coached by Patty with the assistance of Bruce
Marion. Despite a chronic medical ailment,
Patty helped improve the cheerleading pro-
gram in much the same way as her husband
had the football team. To her, each member
was special and she was proud of how they
matured, both in cheerleading and life.

The rees's left in January as Rocky accepted
the position of head football coach at Divison
II Shippensburg University, but not until they
had given themselves to Susquehanna. We
would like to give them something back from
Susquehanna as we dedicate the 1989-90
Lanthom to Rocky and Patty Rees.

Parent's Weekend

98

The morning hours were quiet
and still as the fog settled in the
Susquehanna Valley. A few parents
could be seen scattered around the
campus. As the fog lifted, activity
poured onto the campus. The bleak
morning turned into a glorious In-
dian summer day. A perfect start
for the 1989's Parent's Weekend.

Fraternities and sororities all
held special events for their par-
ents. Many other students had their
own wine and cheese parties with
their families. Some families tail-
gated behind sorority houses be
fore the football game. Other fami
lies watched soccer, cross county,
or field hockey games that were
going on.

Later on, families went to watch'
the Fall Production of Grease
which turned out to be a smash. In
the end, it is the parents that we,
the students want to thank for
everything that you have done for
us. We all hope you had a won-
derful time on Parent's Weekeni
'89!! Thanks MOM and DAD!!

Parents, students and friends were trasported back into the 50's when
S.U. presented their production of Grease. The antics of the Burger Palace
Boys and the Pink Ladies kept audiences rocking in their seats. Numbers
such as "Mooning", "Greased Lightenting", and "Hopelessly Devoted to
You" helped illustrate how young highschoolers could have a fun time.
Weber Chaperl Auditorium filled each night in anticipation for this lively
musical. The students and faculty deserve an extra round of applause for
their dedication, hard work and for putting on a musical that will be
remembered for a long time.
