Though somewhat sheltered
from outside occurances, stu-
dents on campus were aware of
events that affected our nation
and the world during the 1 99 1-92
year. Several days prior to our
arrival on campus, a new page
was written in Russian history as
the Soviet Union was dissolved
as a result of a Coup. Later in the
year, Americans lost Michael
Landon to cancer and Magic
Johnson announced that he test-

ed positive for the HIV-virus.
Several issues concerning women
also stirred the nation, including
the Hill-Thomas hearing, the
Tyson rape trial, the Kennedy
Compound scandal, and the on-
going controversy over the Roe
vs. Wade decision. We witnessed
the Middle-East Peace Talks, and
the Olympic Torch burned in
France.

On campus, Aikens residents
woke up to the "hum" of con-

struction of the Degenstein The-
atre, Cheap Trick rocked Weber
Chapel, we "Chilled" on Spring
Weekend, and marched to "Take
Back The Night."

Even while all of this was going
on around us, we still managed to
keep priorities in order. We spent
long hours cramming for tests,
tried really hard to get up for
classes, and when all else failed,
we grabbed some friends and had
a blast on the weekends!

Sports

Susquehanna's extensive sports program pro-
vides many students with an opportunity for en-
gaging in physical activity, learning the value of
teamwork, and gaining experience from competi-
tion. The sports program at Susquehanna offers
more than eighteen varsity sports for men and
women, allowing many students to take a break
from academics through physical activity.

Susquehanna offers a full program of fall, winter,
and spring sports. We congratulate several teams
who performed exceptionally well this year: the
football, men's basketball, women's basketball, base-
ball, and golf teams.

We are proud of our athletic teams and their
achievements. Their spirit and dedication make us
Uniquely Susquehanna!

Field Hockey

Goal Oriented

By Susanne Quackenbush

A well-balanced offense and
defense proved to be a great
asset to the Lady Crusader Field
Hockey team during the prom-
ising 1991 season. The season
record was much improved from
previous years at 7-5-2, the best
record the team has had since
1986.

One of the season's highlights
was the Lady Crusaders' victory
over Lebanon Valley College,
the team that later went on to
become the Conference Cham-

pions. The leading scorers for
the season were senior Peggy
Bobb with 7 goals and soph-
omore Ang Walter with 6
goals. Walter was also a mem-
ber of the 1991 MAC Field
Hockey Team, Northwest
League. Another player accom-
plishment was that of junior
Tammy Mull, who became a
member of the 1991 All-
Conference Academic Team.

Hanging Tough

by Susanne Quackenbush

The Crusader Soccer team
experienced some promising im-
provements this season. The
team had a very strong fresh-
man class which will aid the
team greatly in developing the
program.

Although the improvements
were not reflected by the team
record, they were demonstrated
by providing competitive play
during games against some very
tough teams. Senior tri-captain
Matt Schrufer said, "The Dick-

inson game was one of our best
because Susquehanna was able
to come from behind and give
them a run for their money."
The team players with the
highest averages were Ron
Cochran, Matt Schrufer,
Kwame Lloyd, and Dan
Burns.

Building upon this season, the
players and coaches have
gained valuable experience and
the future of the program is
promising.

Cross Country

Off And Running

by Susanne Quackenbush

The 1991 Cross Country sea-
son was a time for new begin-
nings. With only four returning
runners from the 1990 season
and very few new freshmen, the
cross country team was thin in
numbers and experience. How-
ever, they pulled together to
build a competitive team.

Senior Ken Heffner led the
squad throughout the season
with his consistent performance.
Both Heffner's and Rick Aus-

sicker's efforts earned them
their fourth letters in the sport.
Sophomore Joe Dobrota ran

as the top runner through the
first four meets until a leg injury
slowed him through the remain-
der of the season.

Overall, the cross country
team has an optimistic outlook
for the future. The team had a
respectable season and the ex-
perience gained by the under-
classmen will be a firm foun-
dation upon which a rebuilding
process can occur.

The women's volleyball sea-
son began with a first-place vic-
tory at the Susquehanna Tour-
nament. Although the team size
was comparably smaller than it
has been in the past, the team's
performance remained very
competitive throughout the sea-
son.

Unfortunately, this strong be-
ginning resulted in some difficult
losses at the end of the season.
The team just missed the op-

portunity to go to the MAC
Playoffs after a disappointing
loss to Elizabethtown College.

Seniors Tracy Ekholm,
Gretel Oakes. and Michele
Lekas provided leadership for
the squad through consistent
performance. Ekholm earned a
spot on the MAC team.

With many returning under-
classmen, the squad will build
upon this season as it looks to
the future for continued success
and another opportunity to at-
tend the MAC Playoffs.

Football

Power House

by Susanne Quackenbush

The 1991 Crusader football season
was spectacular, ending with an out-
standing 11-2 record. Concluding with
a loss to Ithaca College in a National
Collegiate Athletic Association Divi-
sion III Semi-Final, the 1991-92 year
recognized some outstanding achieve-
ments for the team. This season
marked the first time the Crusaders
have reached the National Semi-
Finals, enabling them to survive their
longest season with play continuing
into December.

Thirteen players earned places on
the Middle Atlantic Conference list.

They were Eric Hancock, Andy
Watkins, Cory Mabry, Pat Patte,
Ron Miller, Glenn Davis, Matt
Seagreaves, John Heim, Frank
Lane , Sean Oakes, Chris McCar-
thy, Steve Leggett, Jeff Rainess,
and George Day. This listing gave the
Crusaders the most All-MAC players
of any school in the conference. Rai-
ness and Day were further honored
when they earned places on the GTE
Academic All-American District II
team.

Congratulations to the 1991 team!
We are proud of your accomplish-
ments!

Men's Basketball

Shooting For The Top

by Michael Ferlazzo

The men's season was full of
peaks and valleys, but ended
with a two-game crusade to the
MAC-Northern Division title and
a trip to the NCAA Champi-
onship Tournament.

Entering into the MAC
playoffs with a 15-10 record, the
Crusaders upset fifth-ranked
Scranton 60-59. In the title
game, Susquehanna defeated
Albright 78-73 in overtime. The
season ended in the national

tournament with a 74-71 loss at
King's after a memorable run to
erase a 30-point deficit.

Senior team captain Craig
Harper was the MAC MVP and
finished ninth on the team's ca-
reer scoring list with 1,373
points, topping the team in scor-
ing and rebounds this year. Jun-
ior forward Jim Mikolaichik
also was a first-team MAC All-
Star pick. Sophomore point
guard Tres Wolf joined with
Harper as the team's stars dur-
ing the playoffs.

by Michael Ferlazzo

Led by guards Jen Winter
and Kristie Maravalli. the

women Crusaders out-ran, out-
hustled, and out-scored their op-
position in their quest for their
second-straight MAC-Northern
Division title. Head Coach Mark
Hribar watched his team defeat
Juniata 83-80 in overtime in the
championship game.

The team's season ended in
the NCAA playoffs after a 67-66
loss to Scranton in overtime at
Houts Gym. Hribar was named

MAC-Northwest Coach of the
Year.

Team captain Winter, the
only senior on the team, will
probably go down in Susquehan-
na history as one of the all-time
great playmakers. MAC All-Star
Maravalli became only the
sixth woman player at S.U. to
surpass 1,000 points for her ca-
reer, finishing the season fourth
on the career scoring list with

Under the direction of rookie
Head Coach Randall Bogar, the
S.U. wrestling team finished the
season with a respectable sixth
at the MAC Championship and
finished the dual meet season 8-
9.

Junior Andy Watkins cap-
tured his first MAC title at the
190-pound weight class and
then went on to repeat as a
Division III All-American this
season, finishing eighth while tal-

lying an 18-4 record on the year.
Senior Tom Dodd was also a
placewinner at heavyweight dur-
ing MAC's while junior Matt
Schwenk earned honors at
126. At 134-pounds, junior
Todd Ericson finished the sea-
son with eight pins and broke the
school record for career falls.
Senior team captain Todd
Maynard provided leadership
at 150-pounds.

S.U. swimming is undergoing
a metamorphosis of sorts, but
through it all, a dedicated team
produced a 5-6 mark for the
men and 2-9 record for the wom-
en.

The new training paid off for
swimmers like junior tri-captain
Alex Smith, who twice broke
the school record for the 200-
meter butterfly and went on to
earn the team's Most Valuable
Swimmer honors. Chris Naspo,

another junior butterfly swim-
mer, earned the Most Improved
Swimmer award.

On the women's side, there
was little suspense to the Most
Valuable Swimmer award as
senior tri-captain Paige Malin
placed in the top eight in every
individual event she ever qual-
ified for at the MAC Champi-
onships. A four-year letterwin-
ner, she finished her career with
three school records and was a
part of two others.

The golf team, captained by
senior Rob Rohrbach, had the

most successful year in Susque-
hanna history. A 6-0 regular sea-
son record led to the Spring In-
vitational title and the MAC
Championships where they tied
Gettysburg for first place hon-
ors, shooting a 54-hole total of
930.

Rohrbach, averaging 76.5

was the first player in Susquehanna
history selected to play in the
NCAA tournament. Seniors Chris
Kenney, Pete Springstead,
Mike Mellinger, and Rohrbach
led the team throughout the sea-
son. Top newcomer sophomore
Ron Cochran finished sixth at

Making History

by Michael Ferlazzo

1992 was the greatest base-
ball season in Susquehanna his-
tory as Coach Christodulu,
named Coach of the Year, guid-
ed his team to its first NCAA
Division III Championship Tour-
nament appearances and its first
section title since 1986. In the
process, his team set the school
record for wins in a season with
a final 22-12 mark.

Junior second baseman
Gregg Mills was selected to the

MAC-Northwest Section All-
Stars as well as the NCAA Di-
vision III All-Mid-Atlantic Region
second-team. Sophomore desig-
nated hitter Chris Rembisz
joined Mills on the All-Region
second-team, while freshman
center fielder Mike Gerhart
and junior pitcher Tim Murray
were also MAC All-Star selec-
tions. The team's lone seniors
were pitchers Ken Jonach and
John Walter who gave the
team depth.

Competitive Spirit

by Michael Ferlazzo

Although the 1-6 record may
not indicate it, the Crusader
women's lacrosse program took
some big steps in 1992 under
Head Coach Terry Molloy and
Assistant Coach Andrea
Dowhower. The team provided
strong competition all year,
demonstrated by its 8-7 loss to
Washington College, a team
which had beaten the Crusaders
17-1 just one year before. The
10-7 defeat of Dickinson was the

first MAC victory in the pro-
gram's three-year varsity histo-
ry-
Junior attack wing and co-
captain Wendy Blackburn was
clearly the team leader on of-
fense, tallying a school record
27 goals with an assist as she
earned team awards for MVP
and Best Offensive Player. Sen-
ior co-captain Suzy Bianco
earned placement on the MAC

Great Expectations

by Michael Ferlazzo

S.U. crew has been around
since 1986, but the 1991-92
season was a rebirth of sorts.
Mark Fuller became S.U.'s first
full-time rowing coach, promptly
reorganizing the novice program
into one of the best in the coun-
try.

The men's varsity eight fin-
ished 25th in the nation among
all schools and topped the small
college list. They won their clas-
sification at the Washington Col-
lege Invitational and earned an

invitation to the prestigious Dad
Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
They finished third in their heat
on Philadelphia's Schuylkill Riv-
er, losing only to major college
powers Boston College and Cin-
cinnati. On the Schuylkill in the
fall, they placed 8th out of 37 at
the Frostbite Regatta.

The women also had great
success at the Frostbite, taking
12th out of 26 boats in the nov-
ice classification. The women
just missed an invitation to the
Dad Vail Regatta.

There is more to a college career than just books
and classes. Sometimes we get involved in one of
the numerous co-curricular activities available for
students at Susquehanna, including clubs, interest
groups, club sports, and projects to better the com-
munity. These opportunities allow students to gain
practical experiences outside the academic realm, as
well as providing a means of relaxation and rec-
reation.

And sometimes we don't. These are the times
that we will remember forever — playing tennis on a
warm spring day and hanging out with friends on a
late Friday night. But whatever we're doing, we're
doing it together, and that's what makes us Unique-

Unforgettably

Homecoming

by Melissa Juniper

Susquehanna's Homecoming Week-
end, October 5-6, was improved this
year with the addition of several new
activities, including the First Annual
Joel Cunningham Look-A-Like Con-
test as well as the crowning of the first
Homecoming King. These new activ-
ities, along with S.U. traditions, con-
tributed to an enjoyable weekend that
was Uniquely Susquehanna.

On Friday night, the festivities were
kicked off with a pep rally outside
Degenstein Campus Center. Under
the tent, the main attraction was the
Joel Cunningham Look-A-Like Con-
test. Although there were only three
contestants, the event is expected to
gain popularity and become a S.U.
tradition.

On Saturday morning, the annual
Homecoming Parade, depicting the
theme "Back to the Classics", flooded

Pine Street with floats and vintage cars.
The highlight of the parade was the
Homecoming Court's Corvette Proces-
sion. The first place overall winner of the
float competition was Zeta Tau Alpha
with their rendition focusing on "Gone
with the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz."

The pre-game activities were twofold.
First, the Court was led onto the field.
Anne Ford was named Homecoming
Queen and Gregg Sherman became Sus-
quehanna's first Homecoming King.
Shortly thereafter, jazz trumpeter
Maynard Ferguson played "The Star
Spangled Banner" and later that night
gave an amazing concert.

Of course, Homecoming Weekend
would not be Uniquely Susquehanna's
without the Crusaders defeating their op-
ponents in a 21-20 win. It was great to
see the many returning alumni who made
the weekend complete.

Gallagher, King and Queen Gregg Sherman and Anne Ford, Freshman Gable Dixon escorted by Sarah
Shofran, Juniors Kim Oaks escorted Jim Goehrig, and Jim Filipovitz (not pictured)

Parents' Weekend 1991, November 1-3, was a fun-filled re-
union of many S.U. students with their families. Parents, broth-
ers, sisters, and other relatives and friends arrived on the Sus-
quehanna campus prepared to catch up on the lives of their loved
ones.

Activities were held on campus throughout the weekend,
beginning with the Scholars' Dinner and a Crusader Pep Rally
Friday night. Saturday, after the football team defeated Juniata,
many families attended evening shows of Pirates of Penzance .
Saturday evening's dinner was a special treat for many, with
most families enjoying dinner away from campus.

Chaplain Thomforde delivered an apropos sermon on Sunday
morning when he spoke about honoring and respecting one's
parents. His sermon prompted S.U. students and their parents
alike to reflect on their relationships. Following the service, S.U.
students said good-bye to their guests and retreated to their
rooms or the library to do the work that had been put aside for
family, fun, and entertainment.

Parents' Weekend 1991 was a special event for all who
participated. S.U. students welcomed the weekend as a re-
freshing break from their studies, while friends and families
enjoyed the opportunity to observe how students at Susquehanna
live. We thank all of our loved ones who participated in making
the weekend Uniquely Susquehanna. It was a wonderful week-
end!

Susquehanna's outstanding student-faculty ratio
of 14:1 is evidence of its goal for quality teaching. In
addition to having impressive degrees and prep-
aration for teaching, faculty members also display
genuine interest in students' needs and abilities, and
encourage relationships of compassion, integrity,
and respect among students. Professors make them-
selves available to students outside of class and
devote time to helping each individual student.

In addition, Susquehanna's Student Life staff pro-

From providing counseling services to scheduling

During the first few years at Susquehanna, stu-
dents enter a whole new world — a world of new
experiences and new friendships. The social life of
sororities and fraternities as well as the numerous
clubs, sports, and organizations give students the
opportunity to be involved in the Susquehanna com-
munity. It is during these years that students learn
valuable lessons in life. These are the years to hold
on to because graduation will be here before you
know it.

Seniors

From Freshmen Orientation to rehearsal for the
Graduation March, Seniors have many great mem-
ories of their years at S.U.. The time has come to
write resumes and travel for job interviews or study
for GREs, preparing for life after Susquehanna. Life-
long friendships have been made during the past
four years, and now it's time to hang out at Bott's or
BJ's, laughing about the things you can't believe
you've done. Hard work and determination have
paid off. . .Congratulations and Good Luck!
