as]{ccl what ]Ônd of pcrsons might be likcly to derive
benefit fronl Ruch a hook, the Aut.hor 'would reply that he
has chiefly had in his mind the follo, ving Glasses of
Catholics. Such are, first, those who form the grcat body
of our choirs, and whose singing, based as it is for the
n10st part on a general notion of sentences as 'wholes, too
often betrays an in
ufficient appreciation of the several
'words; secondly, that large class of persons who, "\vhile
provided 'with J\Hssals and Prayer-books abounding in
Latin text and side-by-side translations, yet from ,vant
of a very little practical insight fail to derive fron1
these manuals t.he ad vantages int.ended. Others there
are, thirdly, devout persons of either sex, who n1ight
grcatly profit by the occasional use of Latin prayers; but
arc restrained (and ladies especially) by an idea that in
order to this they lnust fir
t have a cOlnplete knowledge
of Latin. Such a bugbear-for it il5 little else-will,
let us hope, quic]dy yield to a steady practice of thf\
presen t Exercises.
Fourthly, and most especially, there is the increasing
nlllltit.ude of children now in course of education in our
Catholic l\Tission schools. Very many of these have
already learnt to read English with extraordinary facility,
and their minds are instinctively on the look-out for SOlno
new object. It is to be hoped that, as Latin is one of thE:'
extra subjects now proposed by the Education Deparbnent,
the study of it 'will soon fincl a settled place in our ele-
mentary school cuurse; in which case Catholics ,vill enjoy,
in the living chaloacter of the lan h r l1age as llRed in the
Church offices, a gloeat and singular advantage. But in
the meanwhile what better food for the mind ean we offer
to our children than the simple translation from I

The present work, compiled in furtherance of the yiews

Benediction, the choir portions of Mass, the Serving at
Mass, and val'ious Latin prayers in ordinary use; Part II.

Litany of the Saints, \

THE

CA'rHOLIC'S LATIN INSTRUCTOR.

PAR T I.

PREPARATORY REMARKS.

[These observations are intended principally for the a.ssistance of those
who are trying to teach themselves; but with R little additional ex-
planation they may be used by school-tf'nchcrs as an accompaniment
to the Excrci::;cs.]

 1. l\loDB OF USING THIS BOOK.
The Exercises of this book have been arranged not
without referenco to granllnar, yet so as to require the
least possible amount of- it. l\lany persons who take de-
light in singing I.Jatin, especially at nenediction, have
never learnt a granlmar of any kind; and it is for such as
these, in great measure, that this book has been prepared.
Do not, therefore, suppose that, in order to practise the fol-
lowing Exercises, you must previously have gone through
a course of gralunlatical study, either English or Latin.
You learnt to speak English without any grammar at all,
by the mere force of practice and observation; and these
Exercises proceed in a kind of natural order, in like
Inanner, requiring little more than a slight acquaintmH'o
with the gramnlatical terms employed.
You will notice that they consist of a Latin part, and
of a Latin and English part. All that you have to do
i
to learn to construe (thai is, to put word for word
il1to English) each Latin sentence as it COlnes, by aid of
the Latin and English part, to which reference is luade

2 THE CATHOLIC'S LATIN INSTHUCTOR.

page by page. For instance, suppose you have to learll
Exercise III., at page 9. For this purpose you turn,
as òirected by the reference, to page 10, where under
('uITesponding nUlnerals, together ,vith a ,vord for won 1
trauslatiou, each sentonce "Till be found. 'rhon, takin?;
Xo. 1 in the Latin part, viz. cæli ostium, you will see
that ostium
igllifies the gate and cæli of heaven; and
so again of K o. 2, that Redemptor :;;ignifjes Redeemer
ana mundi of the world. Ilaving cOlnpared in this way
as many sentences as you think you can easily rem em ber,
you ,vill then shut up the translation part, and, taking
the Latin part quite by itself, will practise it over and
over until you feel quite at hOlne in it. rroceeding thus
through all the Exercises (which are lin1Ï ted to six in
each chapter, arranged on a uniform principle), you will
find yourself gradually and casily led on up to the com-
plete text, of which they constitute portions, and which
you ,vill then be prepared to practise as a ,vhole, in a
sinlilar manner. Beware in all this of teasing yourself
(I aUl speaking to self-teachers) at not having means
given you in this Part of entering into the various forma-
tions of the words you meet with. Learn well what iR
before you, and be content; just as, without any such
knowledge of fonnationA, you have learnt to speak English.
All .will come in due time. In the Second Part., a short
but sufficient Gramma.r will re fonnd, for the use of
which these Exercises, aH they stand, will dispose you, by
creating that intelligent demand for it in your lnind,
.without which it would be of little profit. You can then,
wi th the aid of grammar, return to these same Exercise8,
and go through them again with greater preciAion.
Observe, it is not necessary to begin the Exercises at
Chapter I. Roucdiction, which is placed first simply be-
cause this is the office most generally joined in, as regards
singing, by our congregations. But each chapter being
cOlnplete as a whole in itself, you can begin at whichever
of them you please. As, for instance, bovs who :;;erve
Ma
s would begin best at Chapter III., and members of

pronounced more as in English "words.
The diphthongs Æ and CE arJ) pronounced as oy: as,
terræ of parth terrey; cælum heaven ceylu1u.
As re
ards the pronunciation of U , AU, &c., and of C
and certain other consonants, it is difficult to lay do,vn a
po
itive rnle, sonIC congregations following the French
ancl others the Italian mode.

9 3. ACCENTUAT] ON.
The saIne vowel may be long in one word and
hort
in another. Thus i is long in l\laria Mary, but short in
lJonlinns Lord; and u is long in Scripturas Srriplu,1'PS,
Ùllt short in sæcula ages. This is called its quantity, and
attention to it is of n1uch impol'tance to the correct
stuùy of Latin. Bnt since the quantity of many words
can only be learnt by practice, and since the rules relating

to it, so far as they go, would be too intricate for us at
pre
ent; it will
uffice here to eall your attention to the
use, in this First Part, of the accentuating m
rk ('),
indicating, in doubtful cases, 'where to lay the stress of
your voice, independently of the actual quantity, tho
notation of whieh is reseryed for the Vocabulary.

 4. PARTS OF SPEECH IN LATIN.
In Latin there are eight Parts of Speech, viz. : Noun,
Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Pl'epüsition, Con-
junctioll, Intelject ion.

S 5. AnsENcE OF ARTICLES.
By Articles we under:-;talld those little 'words so con-
stantly on our lips-" a," "an," and" the." Strange as
it 111ay seem, there are no ,vords ans\vering to these
in Latin; consequently, in translating we have to put
these in for ourselves, according to our iudgllwnt of tho
lllcaning. Thus we translate Ad déxteram at the 'j'igltt
hand; TantuIll Sacramentum 80 great a Sac1'arnent.

 6. LESS NUMBER OF 'V OHDS IN A LATIK THAN IN A
CORRESPOSDING ENGI..ISH SEYTEXCE: 'VHE
CE ARISIYG.
If you take t\VO sentences-one in Latin, the other in
Ellglish--agreeing in sense, you will find, as a general
rule, that the English sentence has the greater nUlllber of
words. For instance: Credo I believe. Orélllus let u.r
 p1'ay.
Resurrectiónem mortuórum tlte resur'rection of the dead.
Benedicánlus Dómino let us bless the Lord. Gloria Patri
et Filio et Spíritui Sancto Glory be to the Father and to the
Son and to tlte Holy Glwst. Now, what is the cause of
this? It is partly owing to the absence of articles frOlll
the IJatin, as already observed; but likewise because where
ill English we employ short prepositions before a nOUll,
as " of," "to," "by," the same effect is commonly produced
in I.atill by chauging the ending of a noun. Thus, frolH
Pater a latJler we have patris of a father, patri to a latller,

PREPARATORY REMARKS.

5

patTo by a father; "of" being representctl }oy is, " to" hy

and" by" bye. Again, where with English verbs ,yO
employ the pronouns I, thou, he, 'we, ye, they, and tho
auxiliaries was, did, "\vill, shall, have, may, let, "\vould,
should, be, been, &c., both of these effects are producecl-in
Latin by a change in the verb itself. Thus, from OIO
I pray we have orélnus let us pray, ora pray thou, oráte
pray ye. This power of change, still retaining their intli-
'Viduality, which certain Latin parts of speech possess,
give
 great life, variety, and precision to the language;
and in unfolding the variations consequent upon it, and
reducing them to classes, a great part of the Latin grallllllar
called Accidence consists.

9 7. CASES OF N üUKS.

Nouns are said to be in different cases, accon1ing to tho
meaning expressed by the changes of their enùings.
The Non1Ïnative comeR before a verb, and is the noun's
state previous to any change of case, as Pater FailLel'.
The Genitive case expresses
, of," as Fililu; Patri
 the
Son of the Father.
The Dative case expresses" to," as Gloria. Patri glory
be to the Father.
The Accusative case is the form \vhich the noun takes
after a verb as its direct object, or after certain pre-
positions, as apud Patrern with the Father.
'rhe Vocative case expresses invocation, ancl is vcry
generally the same as the Nominative, as rater 0 Father.
The Ablative case expresses" from," "by," "in," "with,"
&c., and is used after verbs and with certain prepositions,
as a Patre from the Father.
:Kouns change their endings variously: anilua 80ul
ancl angelus an anyel changing quite in a different way
from pater. All their changes, however, have been re-
ducecl by graIllmarians into five cla
ses, called Dec1ensions,
as will be seen in the Grammar.

6 THE CATHOLIC'S LATIN INSTRU(;TOR.

I 8. ADJECTIVES.
Adjectives in English remain always the sarno, what-
ever nouns they are joined to; but in LatÍn theyehango
their endings in order to agree in gender, number, and
case with their nouns: as, Pater omnípotens the Father
Almighty, Patris omnipotentis of the Father Almighty, .Patri
omnipotenti to the Father Almightv.
Observe the word Almighty remains the sume, but
omni potens changes.

 9. PRONOUNS.

Personal Pronouns have Cáses, and each has its own
special changes, as tu thou, tui of thee, tibi to t]we,. vo..., ye,
ve
tri of you, vobis to you, &c. Posse:;sive I)ronouns, such
as Incus -mine, tUUIS thine, are declined like adjectivcs.

S 10. VEl
BS.

Verbs change their form, nlany above a hundred and fifty
times, in order to express oither absolutely, conditionally,
or otherwise, the Active or Pasðive V oiee, Pre
ent Past or
:Future Tense, First Sccond or YJ.1hird Person, and Singular
or l)lural nUIuLer. By thelSe changes a great variety of
meanings are brought into one word, ,vhich in English
require two, three, or Cvell Illore ,vords. Thus pra>stitisti
means thou gævest, laudáll1l1
'we praise, introíbo I 'will enter
veneréulur let us venerate, requÏt--\lScant may they rest, dedi
senl
I wuuld have given.
Different verbs run into differcnt lillC
 of changes, hut
the greater nUlnber of Latin vcrbs have been reduccd into
four c1asses called Conjugations.
Some verbs suffice for thenll:;elves ,vithout any noun
after them, as ascendit he ascended, and arc callCll In-
transitive; others require a noun or its equivalent after
them, as laudamus 'w(; praise,-whom? te aLee, and are
caJled Transitive.

PREPARAq"ORY REMARKS.

7

The verb" be" is often understood, that is to say, not
expressed, as Gloria Deo glory be to God.

 11. OTHER PARTS OF SPEECH.
Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections
are indeclinable. InlStead of the conjunction et and, que is
often used and put at the end of a word, as uni trinóque
Domino to the One and Trine Lord, instead of uni et trino
Domino.

i 12. 1 1 RANSPOSITION OF WORDS.
In English, for the most part, the actual position of
'words in a sentence follows the order of their Ineanillp; ;
but in Latin what to u::; scems the natural order of the wonllS
is frequently inverted. Thus, thy glory becomes in Latin
gloriam tuam, glory thine; true God Deuln verUlll, God true;
let us give thaulcs gratias agamus, thanks let us give; Thou
gavest them bread from heaven Panem de coolo præstitisti cis,
Bread from heaven gavest Thou them; Give us this day onT
daily bread PaneIll nostrum quotidianulll da nobis hodio,
B1'ead ours daily !Jive us this da1/.
This genius of the Latin tongue for inversion, carried
out sometÜnes to an extraordinary extent, is rendered
possible and easy by the peculiarity already referred to,
nalliely, the changes of ending8 to which its nouns, pro-
Douns, adjectives, and verbs are subject. For the alterations
of eacil. 'word being made not at random but always in
order to show ìts close connection with some other word
either expressed or understood, the intellectual relation-
aship of all the words one to another i
 by thi
 alone
sufficiently manifested; the altered aspect of the wonl
forcing out the llleaning of itself, so to say, and leaving
its n1ere collocation in the sentence a mattcr of less con-
sequence than with us: sOlllCwhat in reseInblance of thm;o
dil5secting maps used by children, in which each several
'piece is so shaped that it can only fit into sonlO othCl'
piece, and sO finds for itself its own place.

8 THE CATHOLIC'S LATIN INSTRUCTOR.

 13. RESEMBLANCE OF MANY LATIN 'YORDS TO ENGLISH.
In conclusion, it should encourage you in your study
of the Latin offices and devotions to consider that if I--iatin
in general is easier to us from the fact of so lnany EngliHh
,vords being derived from it, this holds still more in the
case of Catholic Latin, by reason of the vast influence
which the Catholic Chureh has had on the formation of
the religious terms in use in this country, which wa

Catholic for above a thousand years. Perhaps it is not too
nnlCh to say that one-third of the Latin words occurring
throughout the
e pages lllay be at onee understood
,vithout a translation, frolll their lllere re::;elnblance to
English ,vords of the saIne meaning. Such, for instance,
are the following :-Tentationem, gloria, spíritus, omní-
potens, consubstantialem, descendit, ascendit, crucifixus,
Scriptúras, procédit, prophétas, Cathólicanl, apostólicanl,
Virgo, alnábilis, admirábilis, resurrectionem, altáro, abso-
t u tionmu, &c.
OLserve, in the Latin and English part there is givcn
with each Exercise a heading expressing the speeial
gralnnlatical construction which the Exercise illu
trate8.;
as at page 13, "Genitive Case after Noun." But there
is nothing to hinder you frUIn ignoring these distinctions,
if you think fit, an(l rcgarding each Exercise merely as a
selected portion of the Text.
