Three copies Catholic Registers of the City of Worcester. 1685 to 1837.
remaining. fifty copies printed, numbered and signed, bound in vellum;
subscription price, two guineas. Price of remaining copies, three
guineas.
These Registers were printed with the permission of the Very Rev.
E. Purbrick, SJ.
''From the fact that prior to the Restoration of Charles II. it was
judged unsafe to keep any record of Catholic baptisms and marriages,
this Register of St. George's, Worcester dating, as it does, from
1683 is probably the earliest in existence. Moreover, the curious
little volume with ivhich it commences an account book, 8 inches in
length, by about three inches in breadth bears evident traces of
having been at some time deprived of its earlier leaves. Throughout
the volume the signature of a priest is only once attached, viz., that of
the Rev. Charles Hanne, on 12 March 1749 ; but from 1778,
the date of the commencement of the second volume, and, singularly
enough, the very year of the passing of the first Catholic Relief Act,
the name of the officiating priest is nearly always given." The
