This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project
to make the world's books discoverable online.

It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject
to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books
are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.

Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the
publisher to a library and finally to you.

because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other

A SHORT SKETCH

OF THE

LIVERPOOL CHESS CLUB.

The Liverpool Chess Club was founded
1837 at the Lyceum, Bold Street, hy certain

much opposition and many discussions.* Its first
meeting was held there on December 12th and

To these names must be added that of Mr. John

It may occasion some surprise to learn how great and

generation were aroused by this revolutionary idea of

rules at this meetings originated the idea of a Chess
Clnb at the Lyceum, and had spared neither time
nor trouble to make it a reality,

introdncing a game into a purely literary institution.
The motion, partly in consequence of the non-attendance
of some of its supporters, who perhaps started hack in
dismay at the commotion they had made, was, in the
first instance, lost hy a majority of one. But the lovers
of chess were not daunted hy this defeat in the News-
room Committee, and appealed to that* of the Library,
who at once handsomely acceded to. their request.

The Newsroom Committee thereupon rose in
insurrection, aud denounced the other portion of the
Lyceum government. The question of supremacy of
Lords or Commons raged with much bitterness. The
Commons forbade the game, or any other game, in auy
part of the building, from the coal cellars up to the attics ;
and for a time the peaceful Lyceum was threatened with
all the horrors of civil war. Delegates from the opposing
factions met, and at last it was resolved to prevent
revolution by appealing to a plebicite of the whole of
the members at the annual meeting; but the infant club
was allowed to continue its existence in fear and
trembling during the interval. The period enabled it to
gain power aud strength of members as weU as to
demonstrate that it was really not so frightful a dese-
cration of the building as was supposed by the eminently
respectable gentlemen who so strenuously opposed its
location there.

A decisive battle at the annual meeting was fought,
and, after the most heroic defence and prodigies of

Only proprietors of the Lyceum were eligible
as Members. The Annnal Subscription was fixed at
Five Shillings, and the times of meeting were Monday
and Thursday evenings from 6 to 10.

One of the rules adopted would, in these times,
be considered as of Draconian severity ; it read as
follows : —

"Bule Eleven. — That no wines, spirits, or malt liquors
" shall be introduced, nor shall smoking be allowed."

Still, it remained in force for some years, surviving

even migration to hotels.

In April was held the First Annual Meeting,

1838 by which time the membership had increased
to fifty-eight.*

A challenge was accepted from the newly-

1839 formed Leeds Chess Club, to play two
games by correspondence, and Liverpool

speech-making, the friends of chess emerged * breathless
from the deadly close,' but victorious by a considerable
majority."

lost both*. The return match was played shortly
afterwards, Liverpool being again defeated, losing
one game and drawing the other.

The First Annual Dinner was held on December
16th, at the Brunswick Hotel, Hanover Street.

In March the Armagh Chess Club challenged

1840 Liverpool to a correspondence match of
one game, Armagh to have first move ;

but, in spite of this advantage, they lost. The

return match, on the same terms, ended in a draw.

The Club, finding the restrictions imposed

1 84 1 by the Lyceum to be irksome and detri-
mental, removed to the Clayton Arms

Hotel, Clayton Square (now converted into the

Prince of Wales' Theatre), and it was decided to

permit the game of draughts ; but Rule Eleven,

prohibiting smoking, &c., was re-afBrmed.

The Annual Subscription was raised to Ten

Shillings, and the times of meeting were altered to

Monday and Thursday evenings, 5 to 12.

* These games are preserved ux the Library. Tradition
asserts that one of the Liverpool Playing Committee
consoled himself with the reflection that " Liverpool had
lost by only one game more than the least it was possible
to lose by."

" In January, the following formidable challenge
was published in BeWs Life and other newspapers.
It found no acceptors, but stands as a record of
Liverpool Chess courage and enthusiasm "in the

forties."

TO CHESS CLUBS.
** The Liverpool Chess Club submits the following
** Challenge to the Chess World-.—

" Conditions : — I. Six members of the Liverpool Chess
" Club will play a match with six resident members of
" any other Club in Great Britain or Ireland, London
" alone excepted. 11. Three games to be played by
^^each set of players, making in all eighteen games.
" in. The stakes to be one pound per game, and a
*' silver cup of the value of twenty pounds, to be
"• awarded to the Club winning the majority of games.
'* IV. The Liverpool players will meet their opponents
*' at some place about half way between their respec-
**tive residences, or as maybe otherwise arranged.
" Communications to be addressed to

" G. S. SPRECKLEY, Esq., Liverpool."

The names of those signing this cartel, as Cham-
pions of Liverpool, were Messrs. Mongredien,
Spreckley, Morrison, KeiU, Schwabe, and Tayleure.

At this period, it was generally considered that
the comparative strengths of clubs, outside the
Metropolis, were as follows : — 1st Liverpool ; 2nd
Bristol ; 3rd Leeds ; 4th Wakefield ; 5th Nottingham.

Manchester had not then assumed the position
she took in later years, when for some time she
held the unquestioned supremacy of the Provinces,

In September the Club removed to the
1842 Medical Institute, Mount Pleasant, where
it remained until the end of 1856, a period
of more than fourteen years.*

* The following amusing sketch of Chess Life at the
Institute appeared in the Chess Column of the Liverpool
Albion, February 8th, 1873 :—

" When it wa^s finally decided to remove the Club
from Clayton Square, the use of the Library at the
Medical Hall, Mount Pleasant, was obtained for Monday
and Friday evenings. The location was quiet and
tolerably central, and the members kept their numbers
up fairly; but the atmosphere of the place always
seemed to cast a kind of damper on the spirits of
those frequenting it. The walls were lined with book-
shelves and book-cases, and they whose curious eyes
wandered over the backs of the books, read titles of
treatises and volumes on volumes on all kinds of diseases
to which the human frame is heir; surgical operations,
medical cases, journals in regiments, and enormous
volumes of anatomical plates, all under lock and key,
made the imagination give a kind of ghostly shiver,
quite incompatible with the tranquility of mind requisite
for chess. The long black table down the centre of
the room, across which players conducted their games

At the Annual Dinner at the Adelphi
1843 gQt^j^ tiie Chairman, Mr, Mongredien,
claimed, in his speech, that

" • • • ' the Club might be considered an old one,
"as it had existed for about five years. There were
"in London very few clubs that could boast of so
"high an antiquity.'*

Mr. Perigal, Secretary of the London Chess Club,
who was present, stated that there was only one
London Club that could claim a longer existence.

and those examinations which go by the name of
* post mortems,* suggested to the more imaginative
members that more serious business of the same kind
might have taken place there only a few hours before
the chess meetings. There was an * eerie ' air about
the place which was heightened by the silent keeper
of the building, who never smiled, as though the
sights he had seen there had for ever banished mirth

from his mind. The worthy Mr. W provided, for

a consideration, cofEee and buns for members whose
stomachs were strong enough to take a meal with these dis-
mal surroundings; and those old players who frequented
the place will remember how he used to glide in, in
a ghostly kind of manner, with the tray, as though
he were solemnly administering the draughts prepared
by the medical gentlemen who had vacated the room
previously in favour of the chess patients. The
*hospitally* efiEect was heightened by the appearance

In 1844 the Club and individnal members

match between St. Amant and Staunton,
1846

but the negociations between them fell

through, and the match never came ofiF.

At the Annual Dinner in January, 1845, the
Chairman, Mr, Mongredien, proposed, in his speech,

of the aged Mrs. W with sugar and buns,

apparently to pop into the months of those who might pull
faces at the cups of black draught which steamed on
the tray of her son. As for smoking or any other

kind of refreshment than the W 's restaurant

provided, as described, such levity was strictly pro-
hibited, and one law of the Medes and Persian description,

and which Mr. W enforced with relentless severity,

was to turn out the gas at eleven pan. in the suddenest
manner possible, leaving games and members in the dark.
The promiscuous struggle for hats, coats, and umbrellas
which followed was frequently undignified as well as
inconvenient; and as for the unfinished games — ^well, it
was not so bad for those who were losing, but many
a player gnashed his teeth all the way home in
the bitterness of his soul to find the well-earned fruits
of victory thus snatched from his grasp. Yet in spite
of drawbacks, those were halcyon days for the Club
at the Medical HaU."

saying

**•••• as the proposed second match between
*' St. Amant and Staunton hong fire, he was willing
"to play both of them a match of eleven games at
**pawn and move, for a stake, as that might be an
"indirect test of their relative strengths."

This match also did not come ofiF. /

At the Annual Meeting in December, 1846, the
Secretary's Report showed a membership of 105,
and claimed that the Club was "the largest in
England, and probably the world." In this year
a sum of £59 was expended in furniture, &c.

At the Annual Dinner in February, Mr.
1847 Mongredien, President of the Club, and
Chairman for the occasion, lifted the pro-
ceedings out of the dull groove of routine, by
propounding an idea quite Napoleonic in its breadth
and boldness, as witness his words : —

" • ' • • He noticed with feelings of pleasure the
" enthusiasm of their neighbours, the Yorkshire Chess
"Players, whose annual festivals could not be too
"highly appreciated. • • • ^ He hoped, with the
"help of the Yorkshire players and other clubs, that
" they woul4 shortly be able to muster some three or
"four thousand chess players from all parts at a
"grand Chess Players' Festivals'

By the side of this heroic proposal a match of a
hundred a side seems commonplace — ^a mere chess
"small and early."

Harrwitz was a visitor for some days, and

1848 on one occasion played two simultaneous
games blindfold, then thought ^n astounding

feat, against four members of the Club, two at each
board, and won both games.* The second was
resigned at the nineteenth move, when there was
mate in three, in three different ways.

These years seem to have been uneventfuI,^

1849 and by January^ 1853, the membership had
TO fallen to 50. In 1854 was played the first

1854 Club Tournament of which there appears

to be any record. It was played at evens,

and for only one prize, a £5 5s. set of Chessmen.

In the same year the Club subscribed £5 to the
*' Patriotic Fund," for the relief of the families of
those who fell in the Russo-Turkish War.

In April, 1855, was played the first of that

1855 long series of pleasant, amicable contests
AND with our good friends and neighbours of

1856 the Manchester Chess Club.* It was played
nine a side, for a set of Chessmen ; Man-
chester were victorious by twelve games to six,
and Liverpool suffered financially to the extent of
£6 5s.

In November the return match was played, five
a side, and resulted in a draw.

In 1856 the Club Tournament was again played
at evens.

In January the Club removed from the

1857 Medical Institute to Anderson's Rooms
(since pulled down), Slater Court, Castle

Street. Smoking was at length permitted, and the
game of Draughts was still recognised, t

"^ A complete list of these matches is given on pages
86 and 87.

t The removal is thus commented on in the Chess
Column of the Liverjpool Albion, 15th March, 1878.

complete revolation. The new room was situated at
the top of the building now used as Cobham*s (then
Anderson's) Restaurant, and will be known to many of
our readers as the inner smoking room. The approach
to it was through the general smoking room, usually
dim with clouds which half obscured the counter with
the glittering plated cofEee urns, the tea cups, glasses,
and other furniture of a bar, including the neat bar-
maids and waitresses. Refreshments of all descriptions
were to be had at a moment's notice, and the change
from the severe abstinence and self-denial imposed on
the members at the Medical Institute resembled much
the march of the famished troops of Hanibal into
Capua. The hitherto prohibited weed, tobacco, was
consumed to such an extent that anyone playing a
game in the reeking atmosphere found himself, on
emerging into the air, perfectly saturated with nicotine,
and an object of much annoyance to those whose
olfactory organs declined to enjoy the odour. Hence
arose many resignations of non -smoking members, who
not only endured partial suffocation while playing, but
became walking nuisances afterwards to themselves
and others. But whether in tobacco lies some hidden
virtue congenial to chess or not, certain it is that the
strength of play . decidedly increased — ^possibly from the

In 1861 Kolisch and Stanley were visitors.
A match, by telegraph, -with tho Dublin Library
Club was played, Liverpool being the winner.

The Club Tournament was still played at evens,
but with a proviso that forms the Club's initiation
of odds-giving, namely, that former prize winners
were to give, if requested, pawn and move to those
who had never won a prize.

On January 1st the Club removed to the

Although the room was small and rather inconvenient,
the attendance of members was greater, and it was
often overcrowded, especially as strangers from the
outer room often strayed in, in spite of the notice
"•* Liverpool Chess Club (private)*' which hung upon the
door. This frequently caused annoyance, and was one
of the reasons which eventually led to another removal."
* The following is from the Chess Column of ^e
Liverpool Albion, 26th April, 1878: —

the change gave general satisfaction. The room was
commodious, and the comforts of the members much
increased by the arrangements, which permitted meals
to be partaken of as in a private apartment. Although
in Dale Street, the situation was very quiet, as the
windows did not face the street, and the consequent
absence of noise and disturbance was felt to be a
great boon to nervous players. In fact, after the severe
discipline of the Medical Institution, and the want of
it at Anderson's Eooms, the new location seemed
almost too quiet. There was no view whatever from
the windows, except when open in Summer, and then
the members might feast their eyes on live turtle,
lying in the yard among a few sickly evergreens
in tubs, and try to fancy themselves anywhere but a
few yards from a great Liverpool thoroughfare. The
play partook of the same quiet nature. There were
no important matches or hard contests, except the
annual Manchester event.

The Club Tournament was divided into two

players; competitors being free to elect which
section they would enter.

In this year the annual subscription was

1864 raised to twenty shillings.

At a General Meeting it was decided that
the Club Tournament should be on the handicap
system ; the odds to be Pawn and move, Pawn and
two moves, and Knight.

In 1865 and 1866 the odds in the Club

proceedings; but it was found that guests in the hotel,
who happened to be below the Clubroom, took no
pleasure in what was passing above, and this branch
of amusement was discontinued. The veteran Horwitz,
always a favourite in Liverpool, was once or twice a
guest of the Club for a week or so, and all who had
the pleasure of his society will remember the genial
way in which he would checkmate them daily, or
show those beautiful problems, and end games in
which he has few, if any, equals."

The prohibition against wine, Ac, was withdrawn,
and the game of Draughts ceased to be recognised.
Staunton^s Praxis was adopted as regards Rules
of Play, and the Club was to be open daily from
12 noon to 12 midnight. During the season
Horwitz visited the Club.

In 1868 the Club Tournament was divided into
two sections, one for strong the other for moderate
players ; the first section being open to all. It was
further decided that those losing three games
should retire, and that the final round, in each
section, should be the best of five games.

In January, the Club removed to the Royal
1 87 1 Hotel, Dale Street.

Blackburn was a visitor, and played ten
simultaneous games blindfold. On this occasion
non-members were admitted to the Club by tickets,
price 2s. 6d. each. The match lasted nine-and-a-
half hours,* Blackburn winning eight games and
drawing two.

1872 Pawn and move, Pawn and two moves,

TO Knight, Rook, Rook and move. In

1874 the same year Steinitz visited the Club
for a week.

The Club migrated to the Bull Hotel,

1875 Dale Street, for a short time, but, finding
that locality unsuitable in many respects,

moved to the Palatine Restaurant, Cable Street.

The diflBculty as to suitable quarters still

1876 continuing, the Club, in 1876, transferred
TO their head-quarters to the Saddle Hotel,

1879 Dale Street, going back, however, to
the Palatine in 1877.

A telegraphic match of two games was

1880 played with the Calcutta Chess Club, one
game was resigned by Calcutta on the

sixteenth move, the other was drawn. The
telegrams cost each Club about £30, but would
have cost several times as much, had it not
been for an ingenious code invented by Mr. W.^
W. Rutherford, a member of the Liverpool Club,,
by which any two moves combined could be
sent in a single word.

In 1881 a '' General Challenge Competition,"^

1 88 1 to include every member of the Club^
AND was started ; it was intended to be per-

1882 manent and always in progress. Ta
begin with, all the members were placed

in numerical order, according to their presumed
relative strengths, each having the right ta
challenge, at certain fixed intervals, the one im-
mediately above him, who was bound either ta
accept the challenge or go down a step. The
scheme proved of too tedious and complicated a
nature, and was soon abandoned.

In 1882 Blackburn paid a visit of some days'"
duration.

On January 20th, at the Albert Hall,

1883 Leeds, and after an interval of twelve
years, Yorkshire and Lancashire again

competed over the chess-board. There were 79
a side, and Lancashire won by 84 games to 36.
The Liverpool Club contingent, numbering 21,
won 26 games, lost 8, and drew 5.

The Club Tournament this year -was on the usual
handicap lines, but the total scores were calculated
on what is known as the '' Gelbfus system." It has
not, however, been reverted to.

In February the President, Mr. W. W.

1884 Rutherford, presented a Cup, value £10 10s.,
to be played for. The competition was open

to all Chess Players within a radius of ten miles
from Liverpool, the competitor winning twice to
become the owner of the Cup. It was eventually
secured by Mr. A. Burn.

On November 8th the return match between
Yorkshire and Lancashire was played at the
Athenaeum, Manchester, 80^ a side, Lancashire

was represented by 21 players, who won 17
games, lost 7, and drew 11.

This year's Club Tournament is known as the
"Lister Tournament." Mr. James Lister, a mem-
ber of the Club, having presented j£25 for prizes.

In April the Club removed to rooms at the

1885 City Hall Buildings, Eberle Street, having
secured a five years' lease. A sum of £84

was expended by the Club in furnishing, &c., and
many members made presents, including Mr. James
Lister, who defrayed the cost of gas fittings, £15.

On February 20th was played the first

1886 match by telephone. It was against the
Manchester Club, and consisted of two

games, Liverpool winning one and drawing the
other.

In addition to the usual Club Tournament, there
were two others ; and it was computed that over
1,500 tournament games were played during the
season.

The Club was, unfortunately, compelled to take
action against its landlord for breach of contract.
Proceedings on behalf of the Club were conducted
by one of its members, Mr. W. W. Rutherford,
who not only gained a verdict for £50, but also
handed over to the Club the whole of that amount,
without any deductions for legal or other expenses.

On December 11th, the Club gave a Complimen-
tary Dinner to Mr. Rutherford, when hearty
appreciation was expressed of his valuable services
and generous conduct.

This was the Jubilee Year, not only of
1887 Her Most Gracious Majesty's Reign, but

also of the Liverpool Chess Club, and it
was appropriately commemorated.

On February 2nd a Reception, followed by a
Cinderella, was held, and on the 3rd and 4th
Mr. Blackburn played simultaneous and con-
sultation games, and, in the evening of the 4th,
gave an exhibition of blindfold play. On the
5th the annual match with Manchester took

bringing the week to an agreeable conclusion.

On June 18th was played, at the Alexandra
Hotel, Bradford, the fourth match between
Yorkshire and Lancashire. The teams were 50
a side, and Lancashire won by 26 games to 24.

On October 8th the Irish Chess Association
played, at Liverpool, a match, eight a side, against
the Liverpool Club, which won by six games
to two.

In this year's Club Tournament a novelty
in odds-giving was tried by way of experi-
ment. The first class gave odds on the
following scale : — Pawn and two moves (Pawn
and move being abolished), Knight, Rook, Rook
Pawn and move ; the other classes giving odds
on the same scale, each class conceding Pawn
and two moves to the one immediately below it.
The experiment was not a success, and has not
been tried again.
