This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project
to make the world's books discoverable online.
It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject
to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books
are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.
Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the
publisher to a library and finally to you.

rules at this meetings originated the idea of a Chess
Clnb at the Lyceum, and had spared neither time
nor trouble to make it a reality,
introdncing a game into a purely literary institution.
The motion, partly in consequence of the non-attendance
of some of its supporters, who perhaps started hack in
dismay at the commotion they had made, was, in the
first instance, lost hy a majority of one. But the lovers
of chess were not daunted hy this defeat in the News-
room Committee, and appealed to that* of the Library,
who at once handsomely acceded to. their request.
The Newsroom Committee thereupon rose in
insurrection, aud denounced the other portion of the
Lyceum government. The question of supremacy of
Lords or Commons raged with much bitterness. The
Commons forbade the game, or any other game, in auy
part of the building, from the coal cellars up to the attics ;
and for a time the peaceful Lyceum was threatened with
all the horrors of civil war. Delegates from the opposing
factions met, and at last it was resolved to prevent
revolution by appealing to a plebicite of the whole of
the members at the annual meeting; but the infant club
was allowed to continue its existence in fear and
trembling during the interval. The period enabled it to
gain power aud strength of members as weU as to
demonstrate that it was really not so frightful a dese-
cration of the building as was supposed by the eminently
respectable gentlemen who so strenuously opposed its
location there.
A decisive battle at the annual meeting was fought,
and, after the most heroic defence and prodigies of

Only proprietors of the Lyceum were eligible
as Members. The Annnal Subscription was fixed at
Five Shillings, and the times of meeting were Monday
and Thursday evenings from 6 to 10.
One of the rules adopted would, in these times,
be considered as of Draconian severity ; it read as
follows : —
"Bule Eleven. — That no wines, spirits, or malt liquors
" shall be introduced, nor shall smoking be allowed."
Still, it remained in force for some years, surviving
even migration to hotels.
In April was held the First Annual Meeting,
1838 by which time the membership had increased
to fifty-eight.*
A challenge was accepted from the newly-
1839 formed Leeds Chess Club, to play two

lost both*. The return match was played shortly
afterwards, Liverpool being again defeated, losing
one game and drawing the other.
The First Annual Dinner was held on December
16th, at the Brunswick Hotel, Hanover Street.
In March the Armagh Chess Club challenged
1840 Liverpool to a correspondence match of
one game, Armagh to have first move ;
but, in spite of this advantage, they lost. The
return match, on the same terms, ended in a draw.
The Club, finding the restrictions imposed
1 84 1 by the Lyceum to be irksome and detri-
mental, removed to the Clayton Arms
Hotel, Clayton Square (now converted into the
Prince of Wales' Theatre), and it was decided to
permit the game of draughts ; but Rule Eleven,
prohibiting smoking, &c., was re-afBrmed.
The Annual Subscription was raised to Ten
Shillings, and the times of meeting were altered to
Monday and Thursday evenings, 5 to 12.
* These games are preserved ux the Library. Tradition
asserts that one of the Liverpool Playing Committee
consoled himself with the reflection that " Liverpool had
lost by only one game more than the least it was possible
to lose by."

Manchester had not then assumed the position
she took in later years, when for some time she
held the unquestioned supremacy of the Provinces,
In September the Club removed to the
1842 Medical Institute, Mount Pleasant, where
it remained until the end of 1856, a period
of more than fourteen years.*
* The following amusing sketch of Chess Life at the
Institute appeared in the Chess Column of the Liverpool
Albion, February 8th, 1873 :—
" When it wa^s finally decided to remove the Club
from Clayton Square, the use of the Library at the
Medical Hall, Mount Pleasant, was obtained for Monday
and Friday evenings. The location was quiet and
tolerably central, and the members kept their numbers
up fairly; but the atmosphere of the place always
seemed to cast a kind of damper on the spirits of
those frequenting it. The walls were lined with book-
shelves and book-cases, and they whose curious eyes
wandered over the backs of the books, read titles of
treatises and volumes on volumes on all kinds of diseases
to which the human frame is heir; surgical operations,
medical cases, journals in regiments, and enormous
volumes of anatomical plates, all under lock and key,
made the imagination give a kind of ghostly shiver,
quite incompatible with the tranquility of mind requisite
for chess. The long black table down the centre of
the room, across which players conducted their games

and those examinations which go by the name of

members that more serious business of the same kind
might have taken place there only a few hours before
the chess meetings. There was an * eerie ' air about
the place which was heightened by the silent keeper
of the building, who never smiled, as though the
sights he had seen there had for ever banished mirth
from his mind. The worthy Mr. W provided, for
a consideration, cofEee and buns for members whose
stomachs were strong enough to take a meal with these dis-
mal surroundings; and those old players who frequented
the place will remember how he used to glide in, in
a ghostly kind of manner, with the tray, as though
he were solemnly administering the draughts prepared
by the medical gentlemen who had vacated the room
previously in favour of the chess patients. The

At the Annual Dinner in January, 1845, the
Chairman, Mr, Mongredien, proposed, in his speech,
of the aged Mrs. W with sugar and buns,
apparently to pop into the months of those who might pull
faces at the cups of black draught which steamed on
the tray of her son. As for smoking or any other
kind of refreshment than the W 's restaurant
provided, as described, such levity was strictly pro-
hibited, and one law of the Medes and Persian description,
and which Mr. W enforced with relentless severity,
was to turn out the gas at eleven pan. in the suddenest
manner possible, leaving games and members in the dark.
The promiscuous struggle for hats, coats, and umbrellas
which followed was frequently undignified as well as
inconvenient; and as for the unfinished games — ^well, it
was not so bad for those who were losing, but many
a player gnashed his teeth all the way home in
the bitterness of his soul to find the well-earned fruits
of victory thus snatched from his grasp. Yet in spite
of drawbacks, those were halcyon days for the Club

At the Annual Meeting in December, 1846, the
Secretary's Report showed a membership of 105,
and claimed that the Club was "the largest in
England, and probably the world." In this year
a sum of £59 was expended in furniture, &c.
At the Annual Dinner in February, Mr.
1847 Mongredien, President of the Club, and
Chairman for the occasion, lifted the pro-
ceedings out of the dull groove of routine, by
propounding an idea quite Napoleonic in its breadth
and boldness, as witness his words : —

By the side of this heroic proposal a match of a
hundred a side seems commonplace — ^a mere chess
"small and early."
Harrwitz was a visitor for some days, and
1848 on one occasion played two simultaneous
games blindfold, then thought ^n astounding
feat, against four members of the Club, two at each
board, and won both games.* The second was
resigned at the nineteenth move, when there was
mate in three, in three different ways.
These years seem to have been uneventfuI,^
1849 and by January^ 1853, the membership had
TO fallen to 50. In 1854 was played the first
1854 Club Tournament of which there appears
to be any record. It was played at evens,
and for only one prize, a £5 5s. set of Chessmen.
In the same year the Club subscribed £5 to the

those who fell in the Russo-Turkish War.

In April, 1855, was played the first of that
1855 long series of pleasant, amicable contests

1856 the Manchester Chess Club.* It was played

chester were victorious by twelve games to six,
and Liverpool suffered financially to the extent of
£6 5s.
In November the return match was played, five

In 1856 the Club Tournament was again played
at evens.
In January the Club removed from the
1857 Medical Institute to Anderson's Rooms

game of Draughts was still recognised, t

the top of the building now used as Cobham*s (then

our readers as the inner smoking room. The approach
to it was through the general smoking room, usually
dim with clouds which half obscured the counter with
the glittering plated cofEee urns, the tea cups, glasses,
and other furniture of a bar, including the neat bar-
maids and waitresses. Refreshments of all descriptions
were to be had at a moment's notice, and the change
from the severe abstinence and self-denial imposed on
the members at the Medical Institute resembled much
the march of the famished troops of Hanibal into
Capua. The hitherto prohibited weed, tobacco, was
consumed to such an extent that anyone playing a
game in the reeking atmosphere found himself, on
emerging into the air, perfectly saturated with nicotine,
and an object of much annoyance to those whose
olfactory organs declined to enjoy the odour. Hence
arose many resignations of non -smoking members, who
not only endured partial suffocation while playing, but
became walking nuisances afterwards to themselves
and others. But whether in tobacco lies some hidden
virtue congenial to chess or not, certain it is that the
strength of play . decidedly increased — ^possibly from the

the change gave general satisfaction. The room was
commodious, and the comforts of the members much
increased by the arrangements, which permitted meals
to be partaken of as in a private apartment. Although
in Dale Street, the situation was very quiet, as the
windows did not face the street, and the consequent
absence of noise and disturbance was felt to be a
great boon to nervous players. In fact, after the severe
discipline of the Medical Institution, and the want of
it at Anderson's Eooms, the new location seemed
almost too quiet. There was no view whatever from
the windows, except when open in Summer, and then
the members might feast their eyes on live turtle,
lying in the yard among a few sickly evergreens
in tubs, and try to fancy themselves anywhere but a
few yards from a great Liverpool thoroughfare. The
play partook of the same quiet nature. There were
no important matches or hard contests, except the
annual Manchester event.

who happened to be below the Clubroom, took no
pleasure in what was passing above, and this branch
of amusement was discontinued. The veteran Horwitz,
always a favourite in Liverpool, was once or twice a

Horwitz visited the Club.

should retire, and that the final round, in each
