104 RABEL, D. Livre de Différants Desseings de Parterres. A Paris, chez
Melchior Tavernicr, 1630. Fol. Engr. tide (277 x 198 mm.), showing
within a décorative cartouche a palace and garden, i leaf Préface, and 2 i
delicately engraved designs for parterres numbered i-2i.
Well bound in green morocco gilt, gilt inside dentelle, g.e. flflW

This attractive book of designs for gardons and for parterres with arabesques, com-
posed by Daniel Rabel, seems to be of very considérable rarity. Guilmard : Maîtres Orne-
manistes I, p. 37, was only able to qiiote an incomplète copy in a private collection con-
taining only 17 plates, the copy in the Foule collection (No. 151 of the sale catalogue 1914),
apparently issued (undated) by another printer, contained only 20 plates, and the book is
not in Jessen's catalogue of the great Ornamentstich-Saniralung in Berlin.

Thèse many and varied designs invented by Rabel iliustrate French Garden-Archi-
tecture at its best, and the sensitive artistic skill with which they are executed makes this
a most attractive volume for the print-collector as well as the art student.
