PREFACE ^^

roms little book is placed before the
^ public for the purpose of giving,
in a concise form, an introductory
view of the principal languages and
dialects of the world, as they appear
in print ; and at the same time, to aid
in the cultivation of religious thought,
and the adoration of the Supreme
Being.

We have endeavored to gather
from many distant countries, and
bring within the reach of all, what we
feel must prove universally interest-
ing knowledge ; but which has so far
as we know, hitherto been compara-
tively hidden from the majority of
people and only obtainable in large
and expensive foreign volumes.

Undoubtedly many, even learned
men, will discover something pleasing
and gratifying in the present little
volume, and it is hoped it may find
a place in every household in the
land and whenever referred to, that
it will be found attractive, instruc-
tive and curious.

O I oui' Father we implore thee :
Teach us rightly to adore thee I
Hallowed, pray we. be thy name I

Come to us thy kingdom. Father !
Vice and darkness banish farther :
With thy voice bid them depart 1

Ease our burdens so depressing.
Leave us a repenting heart !

Done on earth as 'tis in heaven
Be thy will Father, given :
We entreat thee, humbly pray !
Let no unjust thought assail us,
Let sincerity avail us :
! incline us to obey !

When we gladly do thy bidding,
Striving for an honest living :
Give of daily bread, our meed !
May we, pleased with thy divid-
ing,
Grateful be for thy providing.

Give nor wealth nor painful need!

Self so weak, entangled, failing.
Teach us mildness, others ailing
Withoutblametobear,nor grudge!
Pray forgive our debts lamented —
Just as we forgive repented
Debtors ;— wise and loving judge!

When we during meditation,
Wrestle with sin's inclination :
Show thy all consoling face !
Lead us not into temptation,
Grant us mercy, consolation :
Guide us with thy heavenly grace!

When depressed we doubt the

morrow.
Fly to thee in grief and sorrow,
Praying for a kind relief :
Holy Father ne'er forsake us !
Let no evil overtake us :
Grant us solace, faith, belief !

Thine the kingdom, power, glory ;
Through eternity before thee :
Make our heartfelt prayer ring !
Prone our hearts are in concealing.
May thy charm allay that feeling !
Trust to thee, thy praise we sing.
