PREFACE
The records of the First Reformed Chxirch of Chatham are in the
custody of the Rev. Roscoe Conkling Wright, Ph.D.. Kinderhook Street,
Chatham. There are three volumes, two of which are thin, old, flat
books, and the third a modern church record book bound in calfskin.
Evidently none of the ministers took any particular interest in the
records beyond entering various statistics, until the Rev. William
James Leggett, Ph.D. became pastor. He did much to bring the rec-
ords up to date, and verified some by the village records, which
date from 1882. It was he who started the new church register,
which is very well kept.
The following extracts were made in August, 1921. The records
were loaned by Dr Wright on Aug. 30 and returned to him Sept. 1.
The original building of the Reformed Church stands on the east
side of Main Street, near the Tracy Memorial Village Hall. It was
saved by the strenuous efforts of the village fire department and
various citizens when all the buildings on that aide of the street
were destroyed by fire, 5 April 1869. It was abandoned in 1901
for the present edifice on Kinderhook Street; around 190S the buil-
ding was altered to its present form, and it is now occupied by a
grocery store.
Attention is called to the loose use of the term Chatham. The
original settlement of this village was in the town of Chatham, and
was called Chatham Four Corners ( although there were always five
corners ) and when the village was incorporated, 15 Feb. 1869, it
became Chatham Village, to distinguish it from the village of Chatham,
now Old Chatham. The name Chatham Village was dropt in 1901, and
this village became Chatham.

REV. ELBERT S. PORTER UN CHAT " OUR CORNERS
Lfroui the racorla of the Dutch Church]
On the first of September, 1843, I ceune to Chatham 4 Corners to
commence my labors In the Ministry. At that time there were but
11 or 12 houses in the village, of which number three were taverns,
one dry goods and grocery store, one wheelwright and blacksmith
shop. The moral condition of the place was sad in the extreme.
Intemperance and litigation to a surprising extent total dis-
regard of the sabbath were some of the most prominent indications
of the moral disease of the commxinity.
THE BEGINNINGS OF THE REFORMED DUTCH CHURCH IN CHATHAM, N. Y.
Lfrom the Conaiatorial Records]
In the Sisring of 1842, the Rev. Richard Sluyter of ClaveracV
addressed a communication to the reverend classis of Rensselaer
at their Spring session, on the subject of establishing a missionary
station at Chatham 4 Corners, Colxombia County. After a full dis-
cussion of the matter, the classis apx)Ointed a committee, of which
Mr Sluyter was chairman, to visit the ground and report concerning
the feasibility of the plan. Having examined into the t/robabilities
of success, the committee reported favorably and the classis resol-
ved to procure a preacher to occupy the ground. Mr E. S. Porter
having been recently licensed was prevailed upon to accept the app-
ointment. He accordingly came to Chatham 4 Corners and commenced
preaching here on the first of September, 1842. A district school-
house was used for the purpose. On the 24th of October, 1842, Mr
Porter was ordained as an evangelist and continued his labors though
no church was instituted. But it pleased God that His cause shoiild
be here established, and a small number of believers were found will-
ing to come forward and be \inited in a distinct flock. Accordingly
on the 22nd day of January, 1843, the Rev. Mr C. Van Der Voort of
Mellenville as one of the committee of classis appointed for the
purpose, came and organized a ch\arch by the appointment and ordin-
ation of Martin Mesick and Peter Gardinier, Elders; and Mr S. Wil-
kinson, Deacon. And this church was organized under the style
and title of the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Chatham.
The contract for building the church was formed, 12 March 1843.
