About...

life
T>earSir:
I fear I have most unintentionaUy ahrmedyou unrueessariiy, in reference to
Jannic. I did [earn tfm summer, to my surprise, that 'Jannie had e\changed notes
Ttnth some of the boys during the session. The ^otp zt^ere from good f amities and wed-
behaved, and I do not imagine that there was anything improper in the notes, save
that they tended to divert her mind from her studies, and the correspondence was in
direct violation of my rules. The information came to me in a way that prevented me
from mentioning names. "E^ccept to Ut Jannie know that I had become aware the notes
had passed, so as to guard her from a repitition of the act in the future, I do not see
that further investigation is necessary.
'Mow far it is best to restriet girls and boys from ail intercourse is a problem
hard to solve, as you yourself have doubtless found. Some parenU insist on the
necessity of occasional association to prevent prudery, stiffness, and to great desire for
a debarred pleasure. 'To meet this requirement, I very occasionally admitted to my
soirees such young men and boys as would have been received in my parlor. In the
prescence of myself and teachers they were allowed one half hour's conversation - no
more. Of course, on commencement nights the time xoas prolonged to one hour, but still
under strict regulations.
!f Jannie wmild only consent to give up all thought of boys until her
education is completed, and apply herself to her studies:, she would ma^e one of the
lovliest, most attractive women I k.now. 9{ature has done so much for her. I except to
be stringent than ever with reference to notes and letters, but ij young people are bent
on correspondence, there l< no limit to their ingenuity.
Odours respectfully,
Votary '}. 'Baldwin, 'Principal

APPLE DAY
Apple Day Song 1992
Sung to Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet
Livin' off bagels
Sleepin' through classes.
Going to parties
At other schools.
The list is real long
Of places we go to
Now it's our turn
To have fun on our lawn.
Wasted Away again at Baldwin
Searching for a man to steal my heart
Some people claim that there's a roommate to blame
But I know ... it's nobody's fault
Don't know the reason
New set ups not pleasin'
Nothing is sure— but the fun's up to you
But it's a new concept
Carnival, bands and
Apple games, too: the fun's up to you.
Refrain
1 downed six Jim Beam shots
And everyone drank lots
The party ran dry and
Had to stumble back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on
Refrain
Come enj(i\ our Apple Day!! I II

Signature Bd] 1 993
written by Elizabeth Smith. Social Committee
chairman
What do black velvet dresses and
penguin suits have in common? A
formal, that's what! A new annual
tradition called the "Signature Ball."
Held the last weekend in
January, this weekend-long event was
first introduced last year by the Social
Committee co-chairs, Elizabeth Smith
and Amy Burroughs. The idea was to
create a formal weekend that resembles
the classic traditional values of Mary
Baldwin.
This three-day event would
include a HUGE all-college theme
party on Friday night, a formal ball on
Saturday night, and a festive brunch on
Sunday. This year, the Signature Ball
Weekend carried the theme of "Mardi
Gras Masquerade." The band Boy O'
Boy played to a festive beaded crowd
on Friday night. On Saturday, over
250 masked couples waltzed and
jazzed to the rhythm of the Johnny
McClennon Big Band. Baldwin Charm
ended the weekend with their a capella
music at the Sunday brunch.
It is the hope of the Social
Committee that the ongoing success of
the Signature Ball Weekend will
continue in the years to come as a
tradition unlike any other. It will never
be just another "formal."

A me§§age from Pregident Ty§on
M
ary Baldwin College has
just enjoyed a very special
anniversary. We have
looked back 1 50 years
and looked forward to our
future. Putting on an appropriate cel-
ebration was a formidable task. Every
member of our staff, many members of
our faculty, and some of our students
and alumnae, were involved in plan-
ning over several years, and then were
responsible for executing every event in
a series of final days from Tuesday,
October 6, to Sunday, October 1 1,
1992.
Our goal was to showcase Mary
Baldwin College's progress and
achievements. We attempted to leave
out no aspect of our evolution and
growth since 1842 and of our suc-
cesses in all aspects of academic, cul-
tural, and social life in a college which
is at one and the same time a vibrant
intellectual center, a beautiful physical
setting, and a successful business.
This was an ambitious undertaking,
but fitting for the occasion.
Musical achievement had, of course,
been celebrated in Tlie Book of Ruth, an
opening sesquicentennial work by
Frances Thompson McKay '69, espe-
cially commissioned and performed as
our year-long sequence of events be-
gan. Our finale presented all the arts:
theatre, with Gilbert and Sullivan's The
Gondoliers, an alumnae art show, and
a Liszt recital by music faculty member
Dr. J. Riley Haws.
Lectures emphasized scholarship.
The Founders' Day address was pre-
sented by alumna Dr. Gwen Kennedy
Neville, the holder of the Elizabeth Root
Paden Chair in Sociology at Southwest-
em University in Georgetown, Texas:
faculty members Dr. Kenneth W.
Keller, professor of history, and Dr.
Carrie B. Douglass, assistant professor
of sociology, presented papers on "Gen-
der and the Equal Protection of the
l^ws Clause" and "Whatever Happened
to the Indians of Virginia?" respectively.
The history of the College by Profes-
sor Emerita of History Dr. Patricia H.
Menk was a particularly significant
achievement. Through her scholarly
and thorough examination of our 1 50
years, she placed our present time in
context. She reminded us that we do.
indeed, "live in time " as her book's title
announces.
She caused us all to rejoice in the
achievements of those who went before,
to recognize the many obstacles that
have been overcome, and to identiiy
our heritage of resilience and deter-
mined will to succeed, and to feel hum-
bly respectful toward the
responsibilities with which we are now
charged.
And we celebrated socially, proud of
the variety of experiences we enjoy
together. From a bird walk with Profes-
sor Emeritus John F. Mehner to the
cheers for our students on the hockey
field and volleyball court to the most
elaborate of festive dinners, we rejoiced
in our friendships, past and present,
and in shared experiences of loved pas-
times.
And we shared with the City of
Staunton, proud that we are in a city
that embraces us and with whom we
feel common purpose in shaping
progress. We gathered at the Staunton
Fine Arts Center; we toured the Mu-
seum of American Frontier Culture: we
admired our Woodrow Wilson Birth-
place.
We dressed up, and we dressed
down. From black tie to blue jeans, we
rejoiced in our culinary heritage of com
pudding, barbecue, apple dumplings,
Virginia ham, and elegant delectables
thai showed off the skills of our Mary
Baldwin kitchens. We baked bread,
and we made ice sculptures, and we
rejoiced in the festive harmony of the
board.
We danced while music played, and
sometimes we just sat to listen. The
sun shone and the leaves turned gold;
the stars came out, and still we re-
joiced in party times.
We remembered that many of us
came to Mary Baldwin not by private
car or scheduled flights, but by train,
long journeys by train. So we went
down to the railroad station, which is
beautifully restored. Lovely memories
are preserved inside that railroad sta-
tion.
No one has ever lacked ambition at
Mary Baldwin, nor the generosity of
soul to reach the ambitious goal.
Through the generosity of Trustee Wil-
liam G. Pannill. we built a building for
our students, and through the generos-
ity and careful design of Trustee Chair-
man Charles S. Luck III and his family,
we built and dedicated a terrace of
bluestone. flower beds, and shade trees
to complement our student complex
and to enhance our campus.
Our expert grounds staff demon-
strated their skills, too, in every comer
of the campus. And our custodial and
housekeeping staff made us all proud.
Lawns were neat and hedges trimmed.
Floors shone and white paint gleamed.
Linen was starched and just right.
They showed how a good business
should be rxm.
Through all these events in the arts
and scholarship, our physical environ-
ment, our business and organizational
skills, a schedule of grueling pace and
a reliving of history, there emerged,
however, the single, obvious, but fun-
damental reason for Mary Baldwin's
celebration: her people, then and now.
Vision, inspiration, hard work, sup-
port, loyalty, friendship, colleagueship,
creativity, vitality: these are Mary
Baldwin's character and personality,
her people, over time and now. Thank
you. every one, and happy anniversary,
Mary Baldwin College!

That uill whiz you through the air,
To Spain or Maine or Africa
IF you just tell it where.
So will you let it take vqu
Where you've never been beFore,
Or will you buy- some drapes to match
And use it
On your
Floor?

Dear Student Body,
It has certainly been a pleasure serving you this year. As your Student Government Association President, I along
with the Executive Committee have invested time and energy to attain the goals we set out to achieve. This year has beer
quite successful in several ways.
First off we brought you the Hypnotist, Tom Deluca. He was hilarious and we hope you enjoyed him. Second,
we worked long and hard on your survival book, "Life on the Hill and Other Places." We hope it provides you with some
useful information. Third, we started the year off with one secretary and ended with another, but it was a smooth
transition. Fourth, we planned and worked very hard to bring you the Dave Matthews T.V. Party. The party was a huge
success, a sell-out! With the help of Commuter Students and the Baldwin Program Board we were able to raise enough
money to purchase the big screen I. v. that is now available for your viewing pleasure in the Ham 'n Jam Pub. The t.v.
party was just a kick-off fund raiser, but it was so successful that we attained our goal immediately. Our last goal was to
revamp elections procedures. We are hoping that by the 1993-94 academic year elections will follow a new, up-to-date
procedure.
This year has certainly been full of excitement, fun, tears, and toil, but it has been worth every minute. I'll be sad
to go, but I want to leave you with this message Always remember that you are Mary Baldwin women and when a
MBC girl puts her heart and mind to it she can accomplish anything! Good luck and take care!
Respectfully yours.
Patricia S.G. Hylton
S.G.A. President

Mary Baldwin's Student Senate has been very active this year making changes in food, grounds, the constitution, and in
the Staunton community. Through a contest the Pub was named after Ham and Jam, and Pub meal tickets were invented.
Stop signs, a phone in Academic, and other campus grounds-related things improved. The Senate as a group helped
Staunton's Red Cross by collecting items for two disaster relief trunks to help area disaster victims. In addition, the
Senate sold MBC baseball caps.

Student Alumnae Partnership works to promote the
Alumnae Association to the student body. By giving
freshmen gifts, sponsoring events on campus, and working
with the Annual Fund Office, the organization helps to
make the student body more aware of the Alumnae

Theatre
The 1992-93 theatre productions included a Gilbert and Sullivan musical called The Gondoliers which
was a talented display of cultural art directed by Frank Southerington with musical direction by Dr.
Robert Allen . The Gondoliers was a lively musical with a large cast and is perhaps one of Gilbert and
Sullivan's most humorous works of art. The Opposite Of Stars: a magical and mysterious historical
account of two women faced with the hardships of life in the 18th century was directed by Rick Seyford.
Joanna Vickery portrayed Margaret, a young English woman who gains insight into the unfamilar world
of the Native Americans of the 18th century and forms a new found friendship with "Light of Many
Stars." a young Native American girl played by Ginny Pitman. A Shakespearean romance called The
Winter's Tale was directed by Terry Southerington. The Importance of Being Earnest is a comedy of
manners directed by Rick Seyford. Two student plays were performed. Personality was directed by
Shawn McCarty. Amy Rupe. and Diara Sullivan. The remarkable Eleemosynaiy was directed by guest
director Amy Cuomo.

Miss America - Leanza Cornett
On September 19, 1992, 21 -year-old Leanza Cornett of Jacksonville,
FL, was named Miss America. She's the 66th Miss America, chosen by
a panel of celebrity judges.
Cornett, a singer and actress, is a sophomore studying communications
at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL.
She plans to speak about AIDS awareness during her year-long reign
Cornett said her "ultimate goal" is to get a group of drama and theater
students together whose performances would "give AIDS kind of a
hopeful message." "If we can bring some lightness into it, it would be
very motivational and very educational," says Cornett.
Cornett said she would like the federal government to increase funding
for AIDS research, but she said society must take the first steps towards
finding a cure. "We have to start with ourselves and that is going to be
my main point as I go out," she said.
Besides a rhinestone tiara, valued at $1000, Cornett Vv'on a $35,000
scholarship and a ruby red 1993 Chevrolet Corvette. She also expects
to earn more than $200,000 from speaking engagements. (Associated

1992 Summer Olympics
An era of amateurism passed into an age ol" professionalism, and the Olympics were transformed forever, when
professional athletes were allowed to compete in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
Countering the attacks of commercialsm, coach Chuck Daly argued that the presence of pros could do nothing but
enhance the event. "There's 183 countries and 3 billion people watching these games," Daly said. "And somewhere out
there now is a 13-year-old who wants to be a Michael or a Magic, a Larry or a Patrick. That's the role of these games," he
said. "That's what happens in all of these sports. It gives people a dream."
The United States emerged from its two-decade Olympic funk, finishing only four behind in the closest medals race
since America won in 1964 in Tokyo. Now it stands poised to rule the sports world in Atlanta in 1996 after arguably its
greatest Summer Games.
America's 108 medals surpassed by one the total in 1968 and trailed only the inflated totals of the Soviet-boycotted
1984 Los Angeles Games and the 1904 St. Louis Games, attended by just 12 nations.
Pictured here are the "Dream Team" (top left) during the first half of their semifinal game with Lithuania; U.S.
volleyball player Bob Samuels (top right), celebrating victory against Canada; Shannon Miller (bottom right) performing
her floor exercises; Gail Devers (bottom left) racing to win in the third heat of the second round 100 meter hurdles. ( AP)
