T
What is a
Bluestocking
?
We have often been asked the origin of the word "Bluestocking,"
so we are reprinting one explanation of the name.
"In the late eigteenth century it was the fashion to hold soirees at
which women were permitted to participate in conversation with
literary and ingenious men. These societies came to be known as
Blue Stocking Clubs because one of the most eminent members of
these clubs, Mr. Benjamin Stillingfleet, wore blue worsted stock-
ings rather than the more common black silk stockings of that day.
Such was the excellence of his conversation and so great a loss
was his absence felt to be that it became fashion to say when he was
not present, "We can do nothing without the bluestockings." The
term has come into common and popular use to denote women
who show a taste for learning and an inclination toward intellectual
pastimes."

The Virginia Women's Institute For Leadership and Virginia MiHtary Institute
Following a complaint bv a female high school student in February, 1989, the U.S. Justice Department filed suit against VMI
and the Commonwealth of Virginia for what it said were violations of the civil rights laws. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Fourth Circuit in Richmond ruled that although single-sex education is educationally justifiable and a legitimate aim of pubhc
policy, the Commonwealth of Virginia must pro\'icie benefits for women comparable to what it provides for men at VMl. The
Court gave VMl the option to admit women, go private, create a parallel program for women, or come up with some other
creative option.
On September 27, 1993 the defendants filed what is now known as the "Mary Baldwin Plan" in the federal District Court in
Roanoke, Virginia. It proposed single-sex military education for men at VMl, coeducational military education through the
ROTC program at VPI-SU, and single-sex leadership education for women with military training at Mary Baldwin College.
If this plan is approved, Virginia will be unique in the country for the variety of educational options it provides for its citizens.
A Mary Baldwin task force on leadership issues has been studying current research on women's learning and leadership styles
and planning the curriculum for the proposed Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership. The committee co-chairs are the
dean of the college. Dr. James Lott, and the dean of students. Dr. Heather Wilson. Members of the committee are faculty
members Dr. Gordon Bowen, Dr. Carrie Douglass, Dr. Virginia Francisco, and Dr. Roderic Owen, student Maggie Kilday '96,
and residence life coordinator Molly Duesterhaus.
VWIL's curriculum will have four components: the academic curriculum, the physical education and health education
curriculum, the military-ROTC leadership program, and the co-curricular component.
In addition to meeting all MBC's requirements for a baccalaureate degree, students will have added requirements in math,
science, computers and foreign language. They will also be required to take a certain number of courses focused on leadership.
The physical education component of the program will include eight semesters of physical education and ongoing physical
conciitioning. For training in military leadership, students will take four years of ROTC. VWIL students will participate in a
co-curricular program (including study halls and Saturday seminars) that balances a structured environment with stuaent self-
governance.
From February 9th through the 15th the U.S. District Court in Roanoke heard testimony on whether the benefits offered to
women through the Virginia Women's Instihjte for Leadership (VWIL), as developed by Mary Baldwin College, would be
comparable to the benefits provided to men through VMl. Witnesses for the defense arguea that what MBC is proposing would
provide at least comparable educational benefits in a holistic environment tailored to the developmental needs of women.
Court appeals of the case are expected to continue through 1995 or 1996 and to eventually reach the Supreme Court. Even if
the plan is ultimately determined to be an unacceptable solution in the VMl case, Mary Baldwin will continue planning for a
leadership program^ but seek sources for private funding. As R. J. Loderick, class of '86, said, "Mary Baldwin has been about
leadership for 152 years. This program can take Mary Baldwin into the future and continue that mission."

A HYMN FOR MARY BALDWIN
Scandinavian Folk Song
lyrics by Gordon Page
To these halls where Wisdom reckons,
To these hills where Beauty dwells;
Where the search for Learning beckons,
Where its tumult ever swells.
Here we bring our childhood visions
Stirring in the quest for Truth;
Here we forge the mind's decisions
Tempered by the faith of youth.
Friendship, honor, sorrow, laughter
Are the ways by which we learn.
Knowledge first, then wisdom after.
Love that seeks not for return.
When we reach the last tomorrow
Of our days in class, on field
We will know how we must borrow,
Mary Baldwin, from thy yield.
I would like to say thank you to my family and friends who have helped me get
where I am today I couldn't have made it without you. I would also like to
thank Crista Cabe and Eddie Huff for believing that I could do this. Your confi-
dence in me boosted my confidence in myself. Thank you! This book is for you!

Pampered Palate
Once upon a time, and on subsequent Thursday nights, a
motley group of students and townspeople met at the
Pampered Palate on Beverley Street. By candlelight they
listened, sang, played guitars, read poetry, ate, served,
acted, and reacted. Each one lived a little more happily
ever after for having been there.

Tullidgc Hall, home of the Program for the
Exceptionally Gifted
The Program for the Exceptionally Gifted was designed to give particularly competent high school women a chance
to excel in a more challenging environment. Incoming freshmen PEGs are between the ages of 1 2 and 1 5 and are housed
in Tullidge. Tullidge also houses the PEG program offices. After one or two years, depending on the individual
student, the student can then move into a dorm in central campus.
The program is a highly liberating experience for these special students. They are encouraged and supported in their j
endeavors by the faculty and staff of the college. Most of these students are highly motivated and flourish in a setting
where they are allowed to truly realize their academic potential. PEGs are also encouraged to participate in cultural
and social pursuits. PEG students are active in campus organizations and sports.
Mary Baldwin has striven to meet the unique needs of exceptional women of all ages. PEG has certainly been one of
Mary Baldwin's success stories. We hope to hear more great things about these remarkable young women in the years
to come.

CHARTER DAY
Each year the Honor Pledge is signed by new students on Charter Day, during the first week of the academic
year. On this date, the Student Government Association Charter is presented to the President of the Student
Government Association by a member of the board of Trustees through the College President, as a renewal of the
commitment to self governance. Upperclass students and the faculty reaffirm their support of the honor system at
the same time. This year's address was made by Dr. Edward A. Scott, Associate Professor of Philosophy.
An Invitation...
to take up the torch and go forth with
success as you walk along the foot-
steps of those before you. Keep
your head high and your chin up
^n Never doubt your abilities because
you are leaders of today anc
tomorrow's future.

FOUNDERS ' DAY
The Traditon of Founders' Day
Mary Baldwin College began in 1842 as
the Augusta Female Serainary. Its founder
and principal for the first seven years was
Rufus W. Bailey, a New England minister
and teacher who had moved south in
1827 for his health.
Educated at Dartmouth and Andover
Theological Seminary, Dr. Bailey gave
the Seminary character and stability that
have endured for 152 years. His high
standards of instruction brought respect
from the community and an everlasting
widening circle of supporters.
One of Dr. Bailey's first pupils at Augusta
Female Seminary was Mary Julia Baldwin,
recalled as a fragile-looking girl with an
overpowering enthusiasm for study and
teaching. For a while she operated a
"charity school" in Staunton and in 1863
was persuaded to take charge of the Semi-
nary. Ingeniously she guided the school
through the uncertain years of war and
reconstruction and into an era of expan-
sion and prosperity.
Through Miss Baldwin's 34 years of ad-
ministration, the academic level of the
courses offered was gradually raised un-
til the curriculum for the higher classes
was equivalent to that of colleges and
universities. In 1895, the trustees changed
the name of the institution to Mary
Baldwin Seminary in honor and appre-
ciation of the "valuable services and un-
paralleled success" of the principal.
Thus, Mary Baldwin came to be recog-
nized as the second founder and, because
her birthday was October 4th, the College
observes Founders' Day during that
month.

cial event of the year.
This is the time when

their books, slips into
an elegant gown, and
goes to dance the night
away. But Signature

couples, it is also for
friends.

Alpha Lambda Delta, the national honor society for freshmen, honors students who achieve excellence
during their first two semesters in a college or university. The organization was begun in 1924 at the
University of Illinois. Alpha Lambda Delta became a national organization after chapters were formed at
Purdue and Depauw in 1926 and 1927, respectively. The central purpose of Alpha Lambda Delta is to
encourage superior academic achievement among students in their first year at institutions of higher
learning, to promote intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning, and to assist women
and men in recognizing and developing meaningful roles in society.
Membership into Alpha Lambda Delta is open to all freshmen who meet the national qualifications.
Students must be studying for a bachelor's degree, taking a full load of courses, and rank in the top 20
percent of their class. The minimum grade requirement for membership is half way between the two
highest grades achievable in the school. After being initiated, the student is a member of Alpha Lambda
Delta for life. Members may remain active in the chapter during the rest of their college years. Students
are "tapped" by the organization at the beginning of their sophomore year and also hold offices during
the same year.
The insignia of Alpha Lambda Delta is a gold candle with the Greek letters superimposed over the
candle. The colors of the society are red, gold, and white. Red represents the burning tlame of knowl-
edge. White represents the search for truth. Gold represents the strong base of honor. The coat of arms
of Alpha Lambda Delta is a gold-bordered, black shield with a red-tipped, white candle above which is
a white altar with an open book on it.
Alpha Lambda Delta participated in Freshmen Orientation.
New officers were elected for the 1993-1994 year. New members and officers were inducted in the
spring. Officers are Pattye Keeling-President, Kristen Wing-Vice President, Camala Beam-Sec. /Tres.,
Kristen Kokie-Senior Advisor, Adele Walker-Junior Advisor.
The freshman Class of 1997 selected Mr. Rick Plant of the English Department to be the 1993-1994 recipi-
ent of the annual Alpha Lambda Delta Faculty Book Award.
Members of Alpha Lambda Delta held a "Get Caught Studying" event in April. Members searched all
dorms on a mission to catch students studying. Those students who "got caught studying" were re-
warded with a treat for their dedication to academic excellence.

The entire Mary Baldwin
College community was deeply
saddened when Dr. J. Riley
Haws, Assistant Professor of
Music, passed away on May 26,
1994, just two days before the
graduation of the class of 1994.
Dr. Haws will be fondly remem-
bered by his former students
and colleagues for his exquisite
artistry on the piano, for his wry
sense of humor, for his gentle
charm and graciousness, and for
his genuine concern for others.
In memory of Dr. Haws, mem-
bers of the faculty and adminis-
tration wore white carnations
during Commencement.
