Alma Mater
Words by Katherine See

Thou wast bom of dream, Mary Baldwin, Mary Baldwin

Woman's dreams of love and true desire;

Conqueror's dreams with passion's ardor glowing.

Caught from Truth's undying pure white fire

Born to live, to perish never

To inspire to high endeavor.

To uphold that light forever,

Mary Baldwin

Thou wast built of dream, Mary Baldwin, Mary Baldwin

Dreams of faith, the dreams of early dawn

Thou shalt live beyond time's farthest limit;

Dreams shall last when walls of stone are gone.

Born to live, to perish never

To inspire to high endeavor.

To uphold that light forever,

Mary Baldwin

it's snoAviixg, finally!

This year's first snowfall
came late, at the end of
January. When the snow
finally did hit, it was not
what the community
expected. Everyone
expected a big snow storm

to snow everyone inside.
It was cold, slippery, and
wet, but classes went on as
usual. The ice did cause a
few unexpected ice skat-
ing events around
campus, but the grounds

keepers did an excellent
job putting salt down and
clearing the walks far the
students making the
campus safe for everyone.
I hope everyone enjoyed

you spend yours?

Spent on or off campus, weekends
have always brought back many sto-
ries to gossip about. "You won't
believe what happened to me this
weekend!" "Scott is the biggest sweet-
heart!" "1 had the best time!" "I met
blah-blah at UVA this weekend!"
Some students stay on campus to
attack the big paper due next week or
to dance the night away at a mixer.
Others race home to get away from
the work or to see a boyfriend. And
you can't say you don't take advan-

tage of our neighboring schools.

Suzannah Meyer's boyfriend goes
to VA Tech, so many ot her week-
ends are spent there as well as study-
ing, seeing movies at the Dixie The-
ater, and going to W&L with friends.
"My most exciting weekend... well,
Signature Balls are always the best,
but one weekend Lori B., Suzannah
F., Suez Doran, some others, and I
went skiing. It was HILARIOUS!
Except for the car accident on the
way up. But I'll never forget how

'Scaredy' wouldn't go down the slope."
"I usually try to catch up on work
and see friends that I don't get to see
during the week," says Beth
Silverman. She also exclaims how
wonderful Signature Ball weekends
are. Other individuals claim "no com-
ment" for reason of incriminating
themselves. So this just goes to show
that Mary Baldwin students have an
adventurous or a memorable week-
end at least once!

Common Sense

The echoes reverberate

Within my heart

Little differences between

The things I've actually heard

And what I wish they'd been.

Flavors savor on my tongue

Combine, confiase my tasting skills

Refine my abilit\-

To separate the finer things

Though delicate at first.

A tender rose beneath my nostrils

Gentle reminder of

Sweetness in a pungent world

The garden Earth

Filled with the blossoms of hope.

The world I see before me

Is not the same as yours

The place I see before my eyes

Deserves more credit

Than it knows.

Nerve endings in a frenzy

Racing signals to my spine

Acting upon my feelings

Instinct is not dead.

Just involuntary.

You who are on the road must have a code that

you can live by. So become yourself because the

past is just a good bye. Teach your childen well,

their father's hell did slowly go by. Feed them

on your dreams, the one they picked, the one

you'll know by. Don't ever ask them why, if they

told you you would cry, so just look at them and

sigh. And know they love you. -Crosby, StiUs,

After a while you learn the subtle difference
between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
and you learn that love doesn't mean leaning and
company doesn't mean security, and you begin
to learn that kisses aren't contracts and presents
aren't promises, you you begin to accept your
defeats with your head up and your eyes open,
with the grace of a woman, not the griet of a
child, and you learn to build all your roads on
today because tomorrow's ground is too uncer-
tain for plans. And futures have a way ot falling
down in mid-flight, after a while you learn that
even sunshine burns if you get too much-so you
plant your own garden and you decorate your
own soul; instead of waiting for someone to
bring you flowers. And you learn that you really
can endure. . .that you really are strong. And you
really do have worth. And you learn and
learn... with every good bye you learn.

Every morning you are handed 24 golden hours.
They are one of the few things in the world that
get free of charge. If you had all the money in
the world, you couldn't buy an extra hour.
What will you do with this priceless treasure?
Remember, you must use it, as it is given only
once. Once wasted you can not get it back.

Only the brave. Only the brave should teach.

Only those who love the young should teach.

Teaching is a vocation.

It is as sacred as the priethood; as innate a
