History

Rabbi Israel Miller: Sept. 5, 1981
1981

_ of the Y.U. Centennial (1886-1986)

Through Crusader castles and snowy mountains, by
golden beaches and ice-glazed rivers, they fought a bitter
war. The soldiers of Milhemet Shlom Hagalil are
businessmen and farmers, fashion designers and mechanics,
professors and construction contractors, our friends from
Yeshivot Hesder, our cousins in Haifa, our neighbors who
made Aliyah to Jerusalem. Hoping to preserve the lives of
the Galil's inhabitants now and in the future, they lost
many of their own lives. As the smallest possible token of
our indebtedness and appreciation, we dedicate this year-
book to them.

The Lebanon War was the most painful in Israel's
history. For the first time the soldiers fought without the
support of a national consensus behind them; also, many
were unclear as to the ultimate goals of the war. Especially
because of this, the Israeli soldiers deserve our respect and
support. For whatever debates rage about the political
aspect of the war, the conduct of the soldiers is worthy of
admiration. They fought bravely, pursued their goals
valiantly, and acted humanely in the midst of the most in-
human conditions. Strong as cedars and gentle as deer, they
battled strenuously to bring peace to their northern border
and a semblance of order to a troubled land.

Once more Israel and her people have impressed us with
awed respect and admiration, but again the occasion is a
tragic one. We hope that in the future these men and
women can struggle not with weapons but with plows,
scalpels, and watercolors; may they work together as well
and as unitedly as they did in Lebanon, but with the only
task before them the furtherance of a decent and productive
national life within the borders of Eretz Israel.

The idea of Torch Ll'modo flifs rhrough oil
ospecrs of the college; ir shows up in odd places
and strongly influences the flavor of fhe whole, like
birs of Cheddar cheese in a chef's salad. And we
hove heard ir discussed rime ofrer fime. We hove
heard ir debored, berored, expounded, confound-
ed, eulogized, criricized, perfecred, dissecred.
We've seen ir used ro churn our public relarions
marerial, as fresh heads of cabbage are rurned in-
ro cole-slaw. We're roo used ro rhe idea, roo
nunnbed by irs frequenr use for cynical purposes.
We ore ofren unoble ro realize rhar Toroh U'modo
plays o viral ond consronr role in our doy ro day
life or Yeshiva.

The images of Torch Ll'modo ore
clear and shorp for us all. Who hosn'r
seen the wonderful picrure of rabbis —
generously bearded, garbed in block —
sronding with o hosr of sifrei roroh on rhe
steps before rhe originol IXobbi Isaac
Elchonon Theological Seminary? Who
hosnr seen photographs of Yeshiva
students, distinctive in their kippot or
denim skirts, toiling in front of computers
ond test-tubes? Who hasn't been con-
fronted with an imoge of secular and
sacred books mingled on a desk with
the straps of t'fillin? These ore all good
images, poetic images, suggestive im-
ages. They tell us much about the con-
cepts of Toroh U'modo: continuity with
the post, interest in modernity, synthesis.
But they don't tell us a heck of a lot
about how the idea of Torah U'moda
permeates our life at the college, like
soy souce permeates a pepper steak.
This is on aspect well worth considering.

For insronce, we hove school on Chonuko. Shiur
and Jewish studies on Chonuko is one rhing; bur it's
crazy rhor we hove ro sir through lectures on Vic-
torian poetry ond Quantum mechanics when our
minds ore filled with Mocobees and twirling dreydls.
Be that as it may, every nighr for o week we trudge
bock to class to light Chonuko candles in the holls.
With our heovy books and our shoes wet from the
snow, we shiep out choirs, overturned garbage cons,
little tables, ond we light the menoroh. This yeor, the
members of one floor in Morg started singing
Chonuko zmirot after hodlokot nerot. Maybe It was
the spirit of the day, maybe it was the spirited music
someone was ploying on his saxophone, but all of a
sudden they started to donee. Soon the dancers ran
wild through all the rooms, pulling people owoy from
the telephone, grobbing them out of bed. Cramming
into the elevator, they came to the next floor, song
ond danced and recruited more people. They visited
every floor, they shanghaied every guy they met to
donee  with  them.  Finally  they  reached  the  lobby;
tired as they were from the long school day, they
found the strength to whirl for half on hour in a circle
Ground the confused security guards. They sang
louder ond louder.

Thot, my friend, is Toroh U'mado.

No college campus is complere wirhour o
dromoric society, and YC is forrunore to hove
the exciremenr of the Yeshivo College Dromoric
Society. The excellence of YCD5 producrions ore
lorgely due ro the dedicorion of the ocrors and
rhe exrroordinory omounr of rime rhey spend
rehearsing. Recently, o group of students hod o
strong, burning desire to act. However, they
could not put in the time YCDS demanded,
because rhey hod previous commitments in the
form of night seders and rhe like. So rhe Yeshivo
College Jewish Theotre was formed. In the spirit
of Judy Gorlond ond Mickey Rooney, they
decided to put on o show for the Spring Festival
of the Arts at Yeshivo. "I con get the fourth floor
of rhe library," one of them said. "I con get o
local butcher store to donote the props we
need," said another. The students built the sets,
direcred rhe ploy, acted, and organized musicol
accomponiment. They didn't socrifice any of
their time set aside for learning at night. The
crowds loved their ploy; and the critics roved.
Toroh U'moda.

Afrer elemenrory school few people in
America really celebrate Tu Dshvor. We're
no longer presented with o bog full of ex-
otic fruit We ourselves nnust run off to the
grocery ot the lost minute and buy figlets
from California In order to be yotse the
shehecheyonu No one over thirteen sings
"Hoshkediyo Porochot " ony more. This
post Tu D'shvQt was a cold ond snowy
doy. Everyone thought that the only way
we would notice the chog would be the
much appreciated skipping of tochonun.
But in the cofeterio ot lunchtime, omong
the shapeless eggplant cutlets and
tomato-soaked stews, was a bowl filled
with fruit. Here were figs and dotes; here
were raisins and nuts; here were sticks of
the fruit which looks like pieces of dried rub-
ber, which no one sees except on Tu
D'shvat. Shehecheyonu was no problem,
and o mood of holiday come to the
Yeshivo students

Only in on atmosphere of Toroh U'moda
could a schooldoy be so suffused with the
special feeling of a chog.

Campus conrroversy is on imporronr aspect of col-
lege life. In the weeks before Meir Kohane came to
speak here, orgumenrs raged about whether he should
be allowed to speak, whether he should hove been in-
vited, whether we should react strongly to his coming.
The evening he spoke, students formed o moss protest
rally, voicing objections not to his presence but to his
views. The protest was so strong that Kohone hod fo
be slipped in o bock door to ovoid a confrontation with
the protesters. The scene could hove been o sixties
demonstration against the war in Vietnam. Except for
one thing: inside the hall, Kohone defended his radical
views with words from haiachic and biblical sources.
Outside the protesters waved signs inscribed with
psukim in bold letters. The demonstrators song songs of
peace and universal understanding, token not from
Dylan or Boez but from the words of the Toroh.

The yearly cycle or Yeshivo is rhe Jewish cycle. Our
college  doys  ore  filled  wirh  Jewish  legrnir^g  and  values;
our yeshivo doys ore filled wirh rhe (Iberol orrs ond in-
volvemenr in Western sociery. The whole atmosphere
is sorurored wirh rhe Holocho as o lorke is sorurored wirh
oil. If you wonr on ideologicol exominorion of Toroh
U'nnoda, rake a look or Robbi Cormy's excellenr Toroh
U'nnadQ reader. If you wonr a mindless gloriflcorion of
rhe concepr, YUPP, con provide you wirh sufficient
moreriol. If you would like a poetic description, Cynrhio
Ozick has a beautiful one in her lorest novel, The Can-
nibal Galaxy. But if you wont to understond, or ro
remember, how Toroh U'modo offecrs us srudenrs os
we study ot Yeshivo, take o simple look at any aspect
of student life. Stop ond consider: this college is not like
oil other colleges. There is something very special obour
it; wirh oil its foults this ottroction mokes it sometimes
irresistoble.

That is Toroh U'modo.

TO THE TESHIVA COLLEGE CLASS OP 1985:

Bv accident of the calendar, you have a very special
distinction: You are the last class of the first century
of the existence of Yeshiva University.

Your class has achieved a splendid record at Yeshiva
College — competent, constructive, and cooperative. You
are an ideal microcosm of Yeshiva College as a whole.

As you march on to the future — in careers, families,
and personal growth - we are confident that you will
represent Yeshiva University with dignity, implementing the
ideals of Torah Umadda In a manner that will reflect glory
upon your alma mater .

during your years here and which, I hope, will continue to be
"your life and the length of your days."

Dear Graduates:

You have successfully completed your studies at Yeshiva College.
This is more than a personal achievement. As members of our fifty-
fourth graduating class, you share with your classmates and more than
a half-century of alumni a commitment to the Yeshiva University ideal
of Torah u'Madda.

This commitment has required an enormous investment of time and
energy. You have chosen to involve yourselves in a rigorous dual
program, each component of which is in itself demanding of full time
attention. You have accepted the challenge of integrating your Torah
studies with what is best in Western civilization and culture.

Your success in meeting this challenge and realizing the University
ideal will be reflected in your lives and careers. You are fortunate tn
having as models those graduates who have demonstrated in their lives and
careers that this challenge can be met successfully and that the Torah
u'Madda ideal retains its freshness and vitality.

Therefore, as you leave Yeshiva College, I congratulate you, I wish
you well, and I urge you to bear in mind that you will be the models for
future Yeshiva College men.

\^e came from a high school a block away; we

came from halfway around the world. Our first year

was the most successful year for the Early Admission

Program, which opened the doors of the university

to those gifted few who showed remarkable

scholastic achievement (were there any freshmen

over sixteen? ).

Fresbman Year

II was a year of change for the institution. A terrible
battle raged over restructuring the curriculum. Students
greeted the proposal with either: "Oh yeh! This here
college is going to let us do whatever the heck we want,"
or "this university surely must remember its respon-
sibility in espousing the great philosophy of liberal art
education.^* Wurzweiler was about to move uptown, and
many faculty members led us to believe that the move
would involve ao influx of scantily clad, seductive
graduate students ( who turned out to be mainly nuns,
male social workers, and middle aged housewives).

We were surprised to read in the New York Times
that Yeshiva would soon be closing down. We just got
here! Was it something we said? The problem was
financial and it was remedied by Yeshiva''s appeal to the
public for one hundred million dollars. Is that not
chutzpah? A rash of muggings descended on Yeshiva
students like a plague. Remembering the small amount
of the security forces at that time, we are tempted to say
(before we think better of it) ''''Thank goodness for the
sniper!"

We returned lo school nexl Seplember — Bui wait,
did we? No, we left Washington Heights for a year in
Israel. However a number of students stayed behind and
actually continued college! What a year those V.C.
Sophomores had. Again Yeshiva made the New York
Times, this time for the extraordinary achievement of
holding an elaborate M*A*S*H* Bash, bidding
farewell to the 4077. We bid farewell lo another
military man, the beloved Colonel Marmorstein, who
retired after doing whatever could be done lo keep us
secure in the pre-sniper years. The college was censured
for the innocuous, totally blameless act of firing a
tenured faculty member.

There was censure from other sources because of the
establishment of the Y.U. cheerleading squad, a group
of dedicated Stem women who followed the basketball
team around from game lo game. One team member
responded to the loud criticism with the memorable
quote, **The cheerleaders help to ease tension on the
busride to the games." No one ever figured that one out.

We settled back into school our third year,

comfortable and already at home. A dynamic

student council was elected which sponsored

various cultural events, such as lectures,

Conunencemenl^ which was to be held in Radio
City Music Hall, was moved back to Danziger
Campus; the rockettes weren^t ready for Yeshiva
studeal6 yet. On a more serious note, a malicious
sniper struck, stalking Yeshiva students with tragic
results. We were warmed by the support of the entire
Jewish community. The orthodox students of a city
college, for example, had T-shirts made up that said
"Don't shoot. I go to Queens.'"' To decorate the area,
the administration bought flowers, trees, and
benches, the last of which were soon labelled
"sitting duck'"* benches, and were surprisingly rarely
used.

The fabled gym began to rise, or more exactly,
construction crews began ripping up the grass and
hedges in the back of Danziger Campus. Purim fun
at Yeshiva was enhanced by the Hymietator, with
jokes that Jesse Jackson, the inspiration for the
issue, would have been proud of.

Senior year. Ah, senior year. No worries, no

pressures. Wail, why are we all still in the library

studying? Why are we still rushing from class to class?

Aaah — GRE's, and M-CATs, and L-SAT's, and the

almighty Kaplan's. Who said that senior year is a

breeze? It's more like a small hurricane. But still there

is a certain spirit in the air, a greater tendency to cut

classes and push off schoolwork.

YCSC sponsored a highly controversial political party

(neither Demo<Tatic nor Republican) on election eve.

Original posters advertising the event included the

letters "'BYOB" — which does not stand for "Bring

your old Bubby." Meir Kahane spoke at the college,

eliciting fervent responses and the most violent public

protest here since security threatened to discontinue van

service between Y.C. and Stern.

We stand at the base of our ivory lower, preparing lo lake the
first steps towards our private goals. Looking at the challenges that
face us, ready to advance into the real world, we gaze back on our
four years and ask ourselves quite simply: what in the world are we
doing?

I can't believe how soon I'll leave the Heights

And school. Soon we'll sit 'neath traffic lights

Bored by the best speakers, and snore or snort

By our million dollar basketball court.

We've yearned for this, we've earned this parchment burned

With red ribbons, mouthing like gibbons all we've learned.

But classes? I don't remember classes.
Remember rather the important things:
Hoagies, movies, village-punk-rock glasses,
Stern vans, Broadway, large engagement rings.
Fire Extinguishers spraying swords of water.
Baseball in the hall, hours on the phone,
College friendships, pac-man for a quarter.
Waking chavrutas so you won't learn alone,
Teachers fat and thin, excellent or bad
Caravans to Bernstein's, lab 'till ten o'clock,
Counting by bottles how much beer you had,
Finding burgers below your dirty sock.

Why me? Was I worthy at last to reap
The dis- and advantages these all heap
On me? The campus, with all its factors.
Domes and towers, vans and gyms and tract
Straight through the stones it too demands me true
And asks with sneer or smile or tear, Why You?

The Heights of My College Career
by Naftall R. Friedman

Looking back at my four years at Yeshiva University, I
realize that I have only actually been here for two years.
Nevertheless, the intensity and profundity of the experience
of those years has left an indelible impression on my outlook
on life and on my bank account.

Years from now I will flip through the pages of this yearbook
to recapture those memorable events that made our stay at
Yeshiva so special like Homecoming Parade and Clovis
Maksoud's stirring speech. To further evoke the memories
and emotions of my daze at Y.U.. I will supplement my reading
with Commentator Purim issue of 1985 — an edition which
will always remain in our hearts and in a safety deposit box in
the Y.U. office of Public Censorship.

One of the great advantages of attending Yeshiva which I
will always be grateful for is the opportunity to have lived and
studied in Washington Heights. "The Heights." as it is affec-
tionately referred to by its English-speaking inhabitants, is an
interesting neighborhood with a rich history. One can stroll on
187th St. between Amsterdam and Audobon Avenues at all
hours of the day or night (at one's own risk) and partake in
the festivities of the perpetual mardi-gras. On one short block
one can hear many different types of ethnic music piping
through car stereos and thirteen speaker cassette radios
large enough to house four to six occupants. Local women,
aimlessly gazing out of their open windows, pillow under their
elbows, watch their husbands (?) and others down below,
engaging in their favorite activities, like automobile repair and
'friendly' domino games. Live chickens occasionally cross the
street: later they will be traditionally roasted to a sumptuous
crisp under five hundred watt red light bulbs at Mcdovidos or
one of the area's other fine restaurants.

Because I lived in exotic Washington Heights during the
semester, my friends always understood why I preferred not
to spend my intercession sunning myself in places like Puerto
Rico, Mexico, and Spain. Instead. I would spend them sunning
myself on the slopes of Killington, studying for Mishna Berura
behinot.

Doctor, Lawyer, Rabbi,Chief.

It shouldn't surprise you that a number of our
students become rabbis- After all. we are the onJy
Yeshrva University.

But doctors and lawyers? And business
chiefs, too?

Yes.

Yeshiva University— with its 15 schools,
divisions and afilliates— is an extraordinary, one-of-
a-kind leaming, service and research institution.
Dedicated to keeping the tradition ofjudaism alive.
And committed to giving men and women, of all
religions, the finest higher education available today.

On our campuses, you'll find a faculty which
includes one of the world's outstanding Talmudic
scholars and the only female Nobel Prize Laureate
in the United Stales. 'Vou'll learn about on-going
research projects in the fields of solar energy, elec-
tronics, and gerontology— as well as Holocaust
and Sephardic studies. And you'll come across spe-
cial seminars on subjects ran^ng from 'Anliques

and Judaica" to "Financial Planning for Women,"
We have seven specialized libraries, hous-
ing some 850.000 volumes. A fascinating museum
devoted to ancient and contemporary Hebraica
and Judaica. An expert who investigates commu-
nication among dolphins. And that's only the
beginning.

Practically everyone in the world has heard
about the Albert Bnstdn College of Medicine. (But
how many know that it's part of Yeshiva University?)
Rated among the top medical schools in the na-
tion, Bnstein has graduated almost 3.000 brilliant
physicians and scientists. It has been applauded
as a medical research center— with life-saving pro-
grams in cancer, heart disease, liver and kidney
ailments, neurological and brain disorders, diabetes.
and more.

Only five years old, our Benjamin N. Cardozo
School of Law has already made a name for itself
A member of the first graduating class was appoint-

ed clerk to a United Slates Supreme Court Justice.

And right now at our Wurzweiler School
of Social Work, a Protestant minister, a Roman
Catholic priest, and eleven rabbis are getting their
masters in a program that is the first of its kind
for clergy.

If all this comes as a surprise to you, there
should be one thing that doesn't. Tuition alone can-
not possibly finance and maintain our present
programs. Tuition alone won't provide the kind of
higher education Yeshiva students demand and
deserve.

We need your support.

The Century Campaign aims to raise
$100 million for the University's immediate and
long-term needs. Please join our list of
distinguished donors.

Your gift— whether big or small— will truly
make a difference to our future doctors, lawyers.
rabbis, and chiefs.

Thanks to all you Dudes who have

helped out in MASMID '85. We've

The yearbook staff would like to thank all those people who
have helped in the production of MASMID '85. We decided
that this yearbook should come out in the summer so that our
memories of Y.U. will still be fresh while looking at it. We are
sorry that the latter events of the year could not be included in
the pictures. These events include: Y.C.D.S. Production of
JOSEPH (which was a marvelous show), Ira Meisels becom-
ing Valedictorian over Jeff Kern and Jack Doveck, Dr. Lee
elected Senior Professor, Barry Resenberg elected President
of Y.C.S.C. over the everpopular Jo Kranzler and Nadrum
Bane, Commentator's 50th Year Dinner, the N.C.A.A. Riflery
Championship held on Amsterdam Ave. (?), the 1985
graduation — (in which the graduates will not be represented
by a valedictorian, unless Egon Brenner is it), Yom Haatz-
maut Gala Celebration and Concert, Senior Dinner and many
other exciting events.

We thought it was worth it for you to receive MASMID '85
before your PhD's so we risked it. Sorry to all those who miss-
ed the boat.

Thanks again,

David & Elliot

The past turns up su

You can't say when it happened, or why exactly

In something someone's written.

Then is the time for all good men

To admit the past they've forgotten

Is fiction.
