REPORT TO THE LISTENER
Tarahu Betserai
The March fund Drive was a great success. $160,000 was raised in
pledges in 10 days and another 537,000 was raised in our pre-fund
drive mailer. It is very clear that you support the good work from
KPFK because you have made this fund drive the most successful
ever. We thank you!
These fund drives are the most labor intensive peritxis during the year
and it takes a special breed of commitment and insanity to make them
work. Anumber of people share in these strange characteristics and
must be thanked for their work. Our Fund Coordinator for this
drive was Pamela Burton. Pam's enthusiasm and skill is a yardstick to others around her and her veiy
warm and p)ersonable style really helped in pulling together many different elements to work on this
effort Hats off to Pam for another outstanding job. Program Director Lucia Chappelle once again
pulled all of her hair out one week before the fund drive and looked remarkably like a carbon of Tarabu
Betserai. The fallout of that process resulted in a lot of good material from the January conference, "The
State of the Fourth Estate, The Media and U.S. Foreign Policy," the Women's Action for Nuclear
Disarmament Conference. Lucia's typical inspiring energy also provided much adrenaline. Blair
Zarubick worked massive hours as he camped out in edit booths preparing a lot of the program material
and managed somehow to keep his eyelids open for ten days straight without blinking once. Business
Manager Mary Fowler was able to complete the hat trick by playing all of the positions at the same lime
without breaking a sweat. Sue Cohen and Terry Guy in subscriptions burned up the video screens
inputing pledges and coordinating volimteers. Maricel Pagulayan and Luisa Pellon were both working
furiously in the production department Tltanks also to the News Department, Engineering, Melanie
Temmer et al. And lastly, special thanks to the many volunteers who came and answered telephones,
served as administrators, stuffmg envelopes and a variety of tasks associated with the fund drive,
restaurants and all the rest who donated food and supplies. We thank you all.
Pacinca & KPFK Win National Awards
More good news for Pacifica and KPFK. Larry Bensky anchor for Pacifica's Iran-Contra Coverage last
year, recently won the prestigious George Polk Award for political broadcasting. Those who listened
to Pacifica's coverage last year know of the superb work Larry did and our congratulations go out to
him. Pacifica and KPFK locally were also awarded the National Federation of Community Broadcast-
ers Award for Iran-ConCra coverage. This award was given to Pacifica for its network coverage and
locally to KPFK in Los Angeles, producer Alan Fong, and WBAI in New York for its local Contragate
coverage. This is especially gratifying. KPFK's local Contragate coverage was KPFK at its best. i\lan
Fong was executive producer for our broadcasts and he did an outstanding job. Other people on the local
team that also share in this award include Cory Dubin, Diane James, Zeta Graham, Leaburt Whittaker
and Bob Young. Note takers, editors and support staff included Blair Zarubick, Rico Clement i\ndy
Weiss, Roby Timmerberg, Ailecn Dietz, Bruce Yale, Mark Kellor, Nancy Clark and Don Rush.
National Board Meeting
The Pacifica Spring national Board Meeting will take place in Washington D.C. on May 6-8. A report
on that meeting will be provided in next months issue.
Also in advance thanks to those who attended KPFK's Canto Tropical Benefit at Club Riviera. Thanks
to Club Riviera for their generous support of KPFK. and to Poncho Sanchez & his Band, Bobby Matos,
and Super Banda Azucar. ,

SPOTUGHT ON AFRICA- 25 years of African Unity -Kwame
Nkruman envisaged a united Africa; a continent under one
government Nkruman was ahead of tiis times — Africa wasn't
ready. Without a continental government, the Organization of
African Unity (OAU) became that entity which will guard that
unity. Since tlien, the continent has suffered economic
problems and polibcal crises What is the status of the OAU 25
years later? May 25, 1963. Africa's Freedom Day, was the
beginning of that unity. Hosted by Assumpta Oturu.
