DROWNING.— 1x. Loosen clothing, if any. 2 Empty
lungs of water by laying neey on its stomach, and lifting it
by the middle so that the head hangs down. Jerk the body
afew times. 3. Pull tongue forward, using handkerchief, or
pin with string, if necessary. 4. Imitate motion of respira-
tion by alternately compress: and expanding the lower
ribs, about twenty timesa minute. Alternately raising and
lowering the arms from the sides up above the head will
stimulate the action of the lungs, Let it be done gently
but persistently. 5. Apply warmth and friction to ex-
tremities. 6. By holding tongue forward, closing the nos-
trils, and pressing the ‘* Adam’s apple ”’ back (so as to close
entrance to stomach), direct inflation may be tried. Take a
deep breath and breathe it forcibly into the mouth of pa-
tient, compress the chest to expel the air, and repeat the
operation. 7. DON’T GIVE UP! People have been saved
after HOURS of patient, vigorous effort. 8. When breathing
begins, get patient into a warm bed, give WARM drinks, or
spirits in teaspoonfuls, fresh air, and quiet.
SUNSTROKE.—There are two important indications for
treatment — reduction of temperature and the use of stimu-
lants. The patient should first be removed to a cooler spot
if possible, or at least where shade can be secured. The
treatment should be begun at once. The clothing about the
neck and body must be either loosened or removed. Cold
is particularly indicated in cases where there is great heat
of the pear and delirium and convulsive movements are
i
present. is means of reducing the temperature may be
applied in the shape of cracked ice about the head and spine,
or the use of cold water. If the heat of the body is very
great, it may be necessary to wrap the patient in sheets wet
with cold water. Ifthereis, besides the great heat, evidence
of serious depression, stimulants must be used while the cold
is being applied.
H2MORRHAGE.— The usual treatment is rest in the re-
cumbent position; small pieces of ice should be freely swal-
lowed, and the application of ice wrapped in a towel or in an
ice-bag, or snow, cold water, etc., over the stomach; hot
applications may be applied to the extremities.
_FIRE IN A BUILDING.— Crawl on the floor. The clearest
air is the lowestin the room. Cover head with woolen wrap,
wet if possible. Cut holes fortheeyes. Don't get excited.
X= sd
BURNS AND SCALDS.— Cover with cooking soda and lay
wet cloths over it. Whites of eggs and olive oil. Olive oil or
linseed oil, plain, or mixed with chalk or whiting. Sweet or
olive oil and lime-water. Shock, whichis always present in
severe burns, requires the administration of stimul Pain
is more constant and intense in burns than in any other form
of injury, and requires sedatives, which should be adminis-
tered by the medical attendant. Later on the appearances
of inflammation and other complications are to be carefully
watched for.
SUFFOCATION FROM INHALING ILLUMINATING GAS.
— Get into the fresh air as soon as possible and lie down.
Keep warm. Take ammonia—twenty drops to a tumbler
of water, at frequent intervals; also, two to four drops
tincture of nux vomica every hour or two for five or six
hours.
TESTS OF DEATH.— Hold mirror to mouth, If living,
moisture will gather. Push pin into flesh. If dead, the hole
will remain; if alive, it will close up. Place fingers in front
of a strong light. If alive, they will appear red; if dead,
black or dark.
MAD DOG OR SNAKE-BITE.— Tie cord tight above
wound. Suck the wound and cauterize with caustic or
white-hot iron at once, or cut out adjoining parts with a
sharp knife. Give stimulants, as whisky, brandy, etc.
FIRE IN ONE'S CLOTHING.— Don't run —especially not
downstairs or out-of-doors. Roll on carpet, or wrap in
woolen rug or blanket. Keep the head down, So as not to
inhale flame.
FIRE FROM KEROSENE.— Don’t use water, it will spread
the flames. Dirt, sand, or flour is the best extinguisher, or
smother with woolen rug, table-cloth, or carpet.
CINDERS IN THE EyE.—Rollsoft paper up like a lamp
lighter, and wet the Gi to remove, or use a medicine dropper
to draw it out. Rub the other eye.
FAINTING.— Place flat on back; allow fresh air, and
sprinkle with water. Place head lower than rest of body.
STINGS OF VENOMOUS INSECTS, ETC.— Apply weak
ammonia, oil, salt water, or iodine.
LIGHTNING.— Dash cold water over a person struck.

An impressive few moments were those
during which Mr. Thompson played the
“Sanctus,” from Gounod’s »“St. Cecilia
Mass,” and following this Rev. Mr. Froth-
ingham réad the last poem which Mr.
Aldrich ever wrote and which was in mem-
ory of the poet Henry Wadsworth Long-
fellow, on the occasion of the Longfellow
centennial anniversary in February. ‘This
poem, it will be recalled, Mr. Aldrich wrote
for the Atlantic Monthly, in the March
number of. which it was. printed. The
verses, as read by the clergyman, are as
follows:
LONGFELLOW
[1807—1907 }
Above his grave the grass and snow
Their soft antiphonal strophes write:
Moonrise and daybreak come and go:
Summer by Summer on the ‘height
The thrusnes find melodious breath;
Here let no vagrant winds that blow
Across the spaces of the night
Waisper of death.
They do not die who leave their thought
Imprinted on some deathless page.
Themselves may pass; the spell they
wrought
Endures on earth from age to age.
And thou, whose voice but yesterday
Fell upon charmed listening ears,
Thou shalt not know the touch of years;
Taou holdest time and chance at bay.
Tnou livest in. thy living word
As when its cadence first was heard.
O Gracious Poet' and benign,
Beloved presence! now as then
Thou standest by the hearts of men.
Their fireside joys and griefs are thine;
Thou speakest: to them of their dead,
They listen and are comforted.
They break tne bread and pour the wine
Of life with thee, as in those days
Men saw thee passing on the street
Beneath the elms—-O reverend feet
That walk in far celestial ways!
METROSE POLICE ee
NOT BEAR HUNTING
Melrose, Novy. 13.:—The local police. are
neither losing sleep nor wasting time gun-
ning for the bear that has appeared in va-
rious ‘parts of the Fells: district recently
and which last night frightened Mrs, Chas,
Messenger and her‘son as they were re-
turning to their’ Vinton st. home.
The bear is believed to be the one that
escaped from Arlington ‘some’ time’ ago
and’ which is perfectly tame and harmless.

WARMEST DECEMBER ON
WEATHER BUREAU’S RECORD
The past month has been the warmest
December since the weather bureau was
established in 1872.
The lowest temperature in the month
was 20 above zero.
Weather: Forecaster Smith is happy to
record another record established by vari-
able New England weather.
On one day in the past month, Dec. 10,
the mercury in the thermometers climbed
to 64, almost summer heat.
In past years Boston has had some De-
cember days when the mercury hid down J
in the bulb and barely had the courage to
register 12 below zero.

VERMONTERS MAKE MONEY
PICKING MOUNTAIN FERNS >
so
Bennington, Vt., Nov. 13.—The fact that
farmers are turning to very profitable ac- .»
count the wild ferns with which the Green
Mountain sides in southern Vermont are
overgrown, has just come to public notice
here, fe
During the dull days following the last ot}
the year’s regular farm harvesting the |
farmers are earning exceptionally good/
wages in gathering ferns and sending them
to New York and Boston florists.
In many of the mountain towns in this.
i section whole families may now be seen
picking ferns.
While the amount paid is only 40 cents a¥
thousand, it is said that the ferns are so
plentiful that a good picker can easiiy
gather as many as 10,000 in a day, mak-
ing a wage of $4. The ferns are tied in
bunches of 25 and delivered at the nearest
railroad station for shipment.
The greater: part of the harvest is sold
through: jobbers, who place the ferns in
cold storage and sell to the florists during
the winter. The ferns are used for back-
grounds in packing flowers.
