DR. WILBUR O. RAMSEY

Professor and Chairman
Department of Restorative Dentistry

It is very difficult to find a man who is admired and respected by the
faculty, the administration, and the students. Dr. Wilbur Ramsey is this rare
individual. Throughout the years, he has served as an inspiration for all of us.
During our four years at BCDS, Dr. Ramsey has amazed us with his knowledge
and impressed us with his clinical judgment. He has sometimes lectured us,
sometimes questioned us, sometimes demanded much of us; but he has never
failed to listen to our problems in clinic with understanding and encourage-
ment. Also, his vast knowledge, ready wit, and sincere interest in our education
have made him outstanding. He is a true teacher.

The BCDS Class of 1971 is happy and honored to dedicate The 1971
MIRROR to Dr. Wilbur O. Ramsey.

HONORARY SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT

DR. JOSE DIAZ

Assistant Professor
Department of Restorative Dentistry

To a bewildered Junior, clinic is, at best, confusing. Once we got our units
on and our chairs upright, we were often faced with questions that G.V.
Black would be hard put to answer. Any sign of help from a Senior or
faculty member was greatly appreciated.

Throughout our clinic years there was one man who was a constant friend.
There was one man who gave up lunch time, break time, and private time to
stand with us. We would gladly make him a member of our Class, computer
number and all, but we feel that other classes should benefit from his com-
passionate and excellent instruction. We are proud to announce our
Honorary Senior Class President, Dr. Jose Diaz.

SENIOR CLASS
REFLECTIONS

Hay den-Harris Hall was at long last completed and dedicated during 1970-1971. Along with the new
School came new ideas and concepts of teaching. The Class of '71, the first graduating class from this
new facility, has experienced clinical and academic courses in both the old and new schools. We have
helped initiate the new equipment, put up with the old equipment, and, wherever necessary, have
innovated our own equipment (Boil-out units).

The Class of '71, at times in the past four years, has been classified as "straight guys" by the lower
classmen, "radicals" by the faculty, and "missing" by the Department of Community Dentistry.

Skit Nights have been dominated by the Class of '71. Our freshman year, we should have won; our
sophomore year, we did win; last year, we almost won; and this year, we're not keeping score. With such
a commanding record, we list for posterity out skits of "My Fair Freshmen," "Cramalot," and "What the
School Needs Now."

We have seen the addition of a Dental Hygiene Program to the School, a new lounge which is smaller
than the locker rooms, classrooms with soft seats, a new coke machine that is worse than the old one,
and a system of lights for calling instructors which has baffled, if not completely destroyed, even the
most logical military minds.

Our Class now leaves this School to enter the dental profession as colleagues of those who have taught
us these past four years. We have added something to BCDS, in spite of ourselves; and we shall continue
to create the atmosphere and attitudes of personal understanding we desired as students. If we were not
pleased with our lot, we should now remember those who come behind us and work to make our
solutions to those problems a reality for them.

No summer clinic fellows; we are moving into the new school ... no summer
clinic; we want you to be able to earn some money. This is the way junior year
began and will end. In between we had a jam-packed year. Every Friday we
raced to the sheets to sign up for appointments . . . the first few months we just
kept picking with the explorers to make sure it was decayed, then plunged head
first into the old O.C. We had our little scandals; we had our confrontations
(thank you CD.); and when it was all over, we were back again wondering what
happened. We learned a lot, relearned a lot, and found out how much we
haven't learned; but we are ready for the last big year . . .

P.S. Module 3 will not get the award this year for the closest student-teacher
ratio!!

Simmer down! Another eventful year has passed as we graduate from our labs to
the clinics.

This past year marked the demise of the letter grading system and the birth of
PAH.

We proved that lack of sunshine does not cause ricketts and institutionalized the
word "throat."

We beautified our labs with subversive pictures and let our hair slowly ease over
collars and ears.

The Class of 1973 has proven to be a dynamic, individualistic, progressive, and
highly academic group, who will do much to help shape dentistry in the future and
keep it responsive to the changing times.

New Class — New School — New Ideas — New Era in Dentistry —
There's a special nervousness, optimism, and anxiety within each freshman class —
we were no different. We . . .

— Nervously queried upperclassmen about texts and tests.

— Optimistically rushed to buy supplies, get our medical examinations, and meet
our first chores.

— Anxiety began as the soon-to-be admired (though not then) lecturer
announced: "You should have read Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in Ham's Histology
by this lecture."

And then we sent "our professor" to arbitrate and arbitrate: "Dr. ,

the freshmen class would appreciate your cooperation in solving . . . About the next
practical examination, an extra weekend to prepare would ..."

to place students on the Faculty Council, gave a tape recorder to the School so that music
could be played in the clinics, presented oral hygiene programs for elementary school
children, gave a gift to the Peoples' Free Medical Clinic for a dental office, had the
privilege of having Dr. Mark Wagner as a Faculty Advisor, and became expert in giving

GORGAS ODONTOLOGICAL SOCIETY

This past school year the Gorgas Odontological Society became
an active organization in the affairs of the school. We felt it the
obligation of a scholastic honorary society to provide tutoring for
students and began a successful program for freshmen. In addition,
speakers from outside the school were provided for members. We
hope to help implement the dental school free clinic and continue
to be an innovator in extracurricular programs.

It is our pleasure to have Dr. Jose H. Diaz as Faculty Advisor.

AISENBERG RESEARCH SOCIETY

The Aisenberg Research Society was founded on the belief that stimulating interest in dental
research is necessary to the growth of our profession. Membership is drawn from students with
previous research experience, especially in summer dental research, and those who show interest
by giving scientific presentations.

The program is concerned with promoting student interest in table clinic presentations. This
includes the Baltimore Campus as well as local, state, and regional dental meetings. This program
also provides an area in which students may gain valuable experience in the basic sciences or
clinical presentations, exchange ideas with other students and practitioners, and broaden the base
of his general dental knowledge. The Faculty Advisor is Dr. Stewart Shapiro.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF DENTISTRY FOR CHILDREN

The Maryland Student Branch of the American Society of Dentistry for Children was founded in
December, 1968. Its purposes are to create an interest in dental procedures in children, to enhance
the ability of the general practitioner in his work with children, and to stimulate interest in
Pedodontics as a specialty. These purposes are fulfilled by means of discussions with general prac-
titioners and specialists from the Baltimore-Washington area. The Faculty Advisor is Dr. Mark
Wagner.

DIAGNOSIS STUDY CLUB

The Diagnosis Study Club, founded in 1970, has as its goal the continuing education of our
student body in the diseases of the oral cavity and oral manifestations of systemic diseases. Periodic
meetings are held to discuss topics of interest, show slides, and present guests learned in the field of
Oral Diagnosis. Through this it is hoped the student may gain greater insight into his part in the
total health scheme. The Faculty Advisor is Dr. John F.'Hasler.

The Dental Wives Auxiliary was formed
in 1966 by a small goup of interested
wives. Its goals were to enlighten the wives
in varied aspects of their husbands profes-
sion and promote the expansion of dental
health education to the public. Each year
the group has grown both in size and
enthusiam and is now the largest student
dental wives organization in the country.

STUDENT-FACULTY DAY

83

On June 7, 1970, we lost Dr. Frank J. Sinnreich, who
was an Associate Professor in Anatomy, Gross and Neuro-
anatomy. He was a member of the Class of 1961 at the
Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School, Uni-
versity of Maryland. His constant thirst for knowledge and
his love for anatomy inspired many students. We shall miss
him.

Dr. Frank J. Sinnreich

In Memoriam

On December 18, 1969, a dear friend and classmate,
Nathan David Gold, lost his life in a fatal car accident. We
find it difficult to accept the fact that one who worked so
hard to achieve excellence in our field was so abruptly
taken away from us. Everyone who knew him was aware
of his sincere interest and dedication to both his fellow-
men and the study of dentistry.

It is with deep regret that the Class of 1971 enters the
practice of dentistry without the able companionship of
Nathan David Gold.

BioblencT Teeth make any denture
look more natural.

Bone-like enamel. Wrap around translucency. Internally blended color. These
are just a few of the esthetic refinements which distinguish Bioblend from
all other artificial teeth. The result: Bioblend Teeth are now being used more
often for complete dentures than any other teeth in the world. Any other!

Available in porcelain or plastic.

Congratulations To The Graduating Seniors

"Very ingenious presentation, sir.
But I have a practice to get going first."

With M.O.N. Y. and Paul Patterson, you can do both!

I've found in dealing professionally with dentists almost exclusively, that until
your practice really takes hold, it's often tough enough finding cash for the absolute
necessities. Do you agree? If so, call your professional at M0NY for details.
