1URCHASERS of the Botanical Magazine who have
an opportunity of choosing the mode of arranging the articles,
will do well to consider, before they send them to the book-
binders, which mode will be most advantageous to them.
There are three ways of arranging the Work.

1. In the order in which they were published; which
being the way in which the Work must necessarily be quoted,
has the advantage of a ready reference to the article quoted.

2. In the systematic order, as pointed out in the Syste-
matical Index. This mode will be found best suited to the
scientific Botanist, or to such as wish to become so ; the former
will readily find what he wants without the necessity of look-
ing into the Index, and the Student will find the greatest
advantage in having all the genera disposed in their proper
classes and orders, and the species of each genus brought
together. In both these modes, the letter-press and plates
may be bound together, or separately, as may best suit the
taste of the owner.

3. The plates may be bound according to the systematic
arrangement, and the letter-press according to the order of
publication. This mode will, in some measure, combine the
advantages of the other two, and will be found most con-
venient ; provided the trouble is taken to add the name to each
figure, and the number, as prefixed in the Systematical Index,
both to the figure and to the letter-press belonging to it.

N. B. The letter-press, bound separately, will make seven
good-sized volumes,— six volumes in each.

PREFACE.

iN submitting the following Indexes to our Readers, we
thankfully acknowledge the assistance we have received from
Mr. Harrop, of Manchester, who kindly transmitted to us a copious
index, compiled for his own use, containing not only the names of
the plants, as given in the Botanical Magazine, but of their syno-
nyms also. By the aid of this index we have been enabled to
render this part of our labours more complete than it would have
otherwise been. We have, however, thought it would add more
to bulk than to usefulness, to insert the synonyms of the older
authors, prior to Linnanis's happy invention of tri\ ial names.

It was from Mr. Harrop's suggestion, that we have been
induced to add the adopted names to the synonyms ; which will not
only save the trouble of referring to the work itself to find its
approved appellation, but even to those who do not possess the
Botanical Magazine, may be found useful, especially to purchasers
of plants, by preventing their giving orders for the same under
different names, an inconvenience, which we have been assured
frequently occurs, more especially in the country.

That we might increase the bulk of the index as little as possible,
we have placed the adopted name under the synonym, prefixing the
word est, instead of ii erting it in a different column. By so doing,
however, we suspect that at first sight, our index will appear
somewhat confused, but the difficulty will be easily got over by
observing, that the line will always lead the eye to the true alpha-
betical arrangement of the species, the intervening names having
no line prefixed. The synonyms are printed in Italics ; and where
the approved name is different from the one under which the plant
was published in the Magazine, the latter name is inserted beneath,
between brackets. In the same manner, when the name adopted

in the Hortus Kewensis is different from the one in the Magazine,
the former is inserted within brackets, with the letters U.K. under
the latter.

We have preferred making our Indexes include forty-two, rather
than only forty volumes, because those who choose to bind up the
plates and letter-press separately will find, that six volumes of the
latter will make one of a convenient size, and the whole will be
comprehended in seven equal volumes. We rather recommend the
binding the plates according- to the systematic arrangement, and the
letter-press numerically, as published. It will be useful, to students
particularly, to have all the species of the same genus arranged
together, and the figures on the plates will refer readily to the
letter-press.

The second part is in great forwardness, and will ho published
with as little delay as possible, containing 1st, the systematic
arrangement ; 2d, a list of the plants which have different names
in the last edition of the Hortus Kewensis from those under which
they are published in the Botanical Magazine ; and 3d, an enume-
ration of the order with c

PLANTS

THE FIRST FORTY-TWO VOLUMES

BOTANICAL MAGAZINE,

Part II.

A Systematical Index.

A List of such Plants as occur under different Names
in the Hortus Kewensis, from those under which they
were published in the Botanical Magazine.

in the Order and Time of Publication.

Printed by Stephen Couchman, Throgmorton-Street.

And Sold by the principal Booksellers in Great-Britain and Ireland.

X URCHASERS of the Botanical Magazine who have
an opportunity of choosing- the mode of arranging the articles,
will do well to consider, before they send them to the book-
binders, which mode will be most advantageous to them.

3. The plates may be bound according to the systematic
arrangement, and the letterpress according to the order of
publication. This mode will, in some measure, combine the
advantages of the other two, and will be found most con-
venient ; provided the trouble is taken to add the name to each
figure, and the number, as prefixed in the Systematical Index,
both to the figure and to the letter-press belonging to it.

N. B. The letter-press, bound separately, will make seven
good-sized volumes,-^-six volumes in each.

[ 41 ]

SYSTEMATICAL INDEX,

The Plants contained in the First Forty-Two Volumes of

the Botanical Magazine are arranged systematically,

N. B. In the following Index, the Plants are, in general,
arranged according to the System of Linnaeus, and in the order
adopted in the Hortus Kewensis ; but it has been thought right to
make some few changes. L\ which the unnecessary separation of
Plants of the same natural family has been sometimes prevented.
Thus the genera Patersonia, Sisyrinchium, Ferraria, Tigridia, and
Galaxia, which in the Hortus Kewensis are placed in Monadelphia
Triandria, are in our arrangement combined with the Class Tri-
andria; by which means the Plants of the natural order of
Ensat;E, so successfully laboured by our able coadjutor in these
volumes, John Bellendbn Ker, Esq. are kept together. Similar
changes are made in some other instances, which will be found to
be noticed as they occur.

As, in the progress of science, many of the names have been
altered since the publication of the figures, those of the Hortus
Kewensis, a work considered of the first authority, generally stand
first, and the names under which the Plants were published in the
Magazine are inserted below within brackets. But it may be
observed, that many of these changes were first made in the Maga-
zine, by Mr. Ker (formerly G awler, whence the signature G.) and
afterwards adopted in the Hortus Kewensis, as has been generally
the case in the natural orders of ensatce and litiacem. In the few
cases where the name adopted in the Hortus Kewensis is placed
within the brackets and printed in italics, it is designed to mark a
preference of the name above it. And where both the first name and

42 SYSTEMATICAL INDEX,

that within the brackets are printed in roman letters, it is meant
not to determine which is to be preferred, as it may be doubted
whether some of the new genera, adopted in the Hortus Kewensis,
will be acknowledged by Botanists in general.
