PREFACE.

IN submitting the following Indexes to our Readers, we
thankfully acknowledge the assistance we have received from
Mr. Harrop, of Manchester, who kindly transmitted to us a copious
index, compiled for his own use, containing not only the names of
the plant?, as given in the Botanical Magazine, but of their syno-
nyms also. By the aid of this index we have been enabled to
render this part of our labours more complete than it would have,
otherwise been. We have, however, thought it would add more
to bulk than to usefulness, to insert the synonyms of the older
authors, prior to Linnseus's happy invention of trivial names.

It was from Mr. Haurop's suggestion, that we have been
induced to add the adopted names to the synonyms ; which will not
only save the trouble of referring to the work itself to find its
approved appellation, but even to those who do not possess the
Botanical Magazine, may be found useful, especially to purchasers
of plants, by preventing their giving orders for the same under
different names, an inconvenience, which we have been assured
frequently occurs, more especially in the country.

That we might increase the bulk of the index as little as possible,
we have placed the adopted name under the synonym, prefixing the
word est, instead of inserting it in a different column. By so doing,
however, we suspect that at first sight, our index will appear
somewhat confused, but the difficulty will be easily got over by-
observing, that the line will always lead the eye to the true alpha-
betical arrangement of the species, the intervening names having
no line prefixed. The synonyms are printed in Italics ; and where
the approved name is different from the one under which the plant
v* as published in the Magazine, the latter name is inserted beneath,
between brackets. In the same manner, when the name adopted

the Hortus Kewensi

:* is different from the one in the Magazine

former is inserted \

vithiii brack-? 1 3, with the letters H.K. under

latter.

We have prefeiTed making our Indexes include forty-two, rather
than only forty volumes, because those who choose to bind up the
plates and letter-press separately will find, that six volumes of the
latter will make one of a convenient size, and the whole will be
comprehended in seven equal volumes. We rather recommend the
binding the plates according- to the systematic arrangement, and the
letter-press numerically, as published. It will be useful, to students
particularly, to have all the species of the same genus arranged
together, and the figures on the plates will refer readily to the

The second part is in great forwardness, and will be published
with as little delay as possible, containing 1st, the systematic
arrangement ; 2d, a list of the plants which have different names
in the last edition of the Hortus Kewensis from those under which
they are published in the Botanical Magazine ; and 3d, an enume-
