A Witness to Change
Story about Arminta Baldwin
Arminta Baldwin has taught English for 46 years,
completing her 39th year at West Virginia Wesleyan
College this past spring. Having taught for almost a third
of the college's history, she has a unique perspective on
how Wesleyan has grown.
"I've been witness to several changes at Wesleyan," she
recalls. "Facilities, faculty, curriculum — I've seen and
played a part in it all."
The professor of English has held many leadership roles,
including chair of the English department ( 1 5 years) and
yearbook advisor (16 years). She has also worked
significantly with community council and served on
numerous committees to appoint new deans. "Currently I
like to focus on my teaching," she says. "It's the most
rewarding part for me."
Teaching classes such as Short Fiction, Romantic
Literature and Autobiography & Journal Writing,
Baldwin lists her favorite course as Images of Women in
Literature, a course she designed after surviving her own
experience with domestic violence. "I really enjoy exploring
social issues through literature," she explains of the class. "I have students keep a journal of the images
of women they see in the movies, on television and in other classes. We read texts that deal specifically
with women's issues, such as domestic violence and rape, which are often difficult to talk about. I've
been really pleased with how the class has grown."
When asked for advice that she might give to an incoming professor, Baldwin replied, "A good
professor really listens to his or her students. Learning needs to be interactive. Ideas need to be discussed
and not just lectured." Observing students for over four decades, Baldwin believes that they, like
society, are becoming more individually oriented with each passing year. "Students are thinking more for
themselves and not just accepting of ideas that are presented to them," she observes. "They need to be
involved in their own education."
In her free time, Baldwin enjoys reading detective novels and writing essays. She is grateful for e-mail,
which has increased her contact with past students. "I really have enjoyed the students over the years,"
she says. "Those interactions have been invaluable." You can reach Professor Baldwin at

Below: Dr. Devon McNamara, English, poses in
her office before embarking on her trip to Ireland.
Oval: Dr. Maya Mei-Tal, criminal justice, and
Richard Schmitt, creative writing, converse during
a college social gathering.
Dr. McNamara, associate professor of English, loves West Virginia and considers herself as
a type of defender of its spirit. "You can see the stars, know your neighbors, and people are
frazzled by northern sprawl. I am moved by its culture and I can sympathize with those
who don't have employment opportunities and the proper education they deserve,"
McNamara reflects.
She yearns for opportunities when she can do things for young people in America, and she
believes that international experiences are opportunities to grow. "I like the combination
of getting out of the hollow, getting on a plane, and going to Greece," she said. Dr.
McNamara has directed a number of travel courses to Ireland.
Life isn't slowing down for Dr. McNamara and that's just fine with her. She has formed
lasting relationships especially in the English Department with Dr. John Saunders and
West Virginia Poet Laureate Dr. Irene McKinney. McNamara also loves her cats. "I used
to have 19 puppies. These two female dogs I had just kept getting pregnant. I gave the
puppies away to a fraternity and several other places on campus. I'm much more of a cat
person." An eternal optimist the professor smiled: "Life is just endlessly good."

My freshman year created an overwhelming sense of
newness. It was like a different world really. To
establish some sense of relativity, I applied for a work
study in the Biology Department to care for its animals.
One of those days when I was preparing to clean the
large saltwater tank, which included taking the fish out
of the tank, emptying the water, scraping every fungus
covered object, rinsing the gravel, as well as all the
fungus covered equipment— you get the picture— Lab
Coordinator Mary Miller came into the biology museum
and showed me a copy of the Record Delta which had
my name in it. Kitzmiller is a long German name and
always misspelled. This time it was with an S and Z
together. Professor Miller laughed and said that some in
the Biology Department called the newspaper "The
Wretched Delta." I laughed too. It really made my
day.
— by Seth Kitzmiller
During my sophomore year, I really found a place of
solace in the Art Department. I had taken an art class
and then felt compelled to take another my sophomore
year. I learned that art is a skill that develops in other
parts of your life besides drawing or painting or graphic
design. You form different perspectives about people, ideas, and concepts. Your focus is narrowed
down and disciplined and your eyes are somehow sharper. When you look at a picture or a person you
capture things like angles, thoughts, emotions, stereotypes— you can pick up the essence but the
mystery still remains. When one becomes a sophomore, one is quieter, more relaxed and one can feel
the essence of college life and become familiar with its spirit and attitude. Yet, the mystery remains.
You still have two years to go. , „ . ...

Like the cast of Saved by the Bell said, "It seems like only yesterday we started." Although I am
looking forward to my senior year and the culminating graduation, the past three years have whizzed
past. Looking back I remember a great deal of fuss and muss— stress over schoolwork, especially
senior thesis. Stress over schoolwork and grades is a given, but it's not what you'll remember once the
experience is over. What I remember are late night trips to the Donut Shop and Sheetz, long nights
pledging Alpha Gamma Delta, formals— essentially the laughter and the tears. You remember
friends.

I think the best thing about being

Maturity
esponsibilitv2^
After four years of classes and lesson plans, it's all
so strange walking into the classroom where all of the
students are a traction of your age. Their
impressionable laces all look up to you quite literally.
Asking a question to a class of miniature boys and
girls, your early morning butterflies quickly disappear
as ten little arms rise to answer your question. In a
brief moment, you smile to yourself because you feel
you actually reached the children. When the final
bell rings for the day, and you pass the last of your
student heading to the buses, making sure to give
each one a high-five on your way out of the door, you
realize this is exactly where you are supposed to be.
On the way back to campus, you think to yourself,
"Wow! Where did the time go?" You can remember
freshmen year like it was yesterday. Meeting your
roommate, sitting on the wall in the quad, and
wondering whose grandma "Grandma" really is. It
was hard at first, finding that perfect balance between
work and play and to this day some people still have
not.
You continue to wonder how you made it this far.
You think back to the worst classes you have taken.
You thought that professor was the devil and she was
out to ruin your life. But then the negativity is
replaced by the happiness you get from thinking of your favorite instructor. The one who you were
able to distract by talking about her kids or grandkids, or the one who made you laugh so hard that
you thought you were going to wet your pants!
As you walk toward your room, the chapel catches your eye. You turn and gaze at the steeple for
a moment. You recall the few times you thought about leaving — going somewhere else. Then your
name is hollered from a group of passing friends. You yell back and realize that you were never a
number here. You were educated well and will go on to be an excellent teacher or an awesome
professional in whatever field you jump into. Your friends walk over to you and you now know that
Wesleyan became your second home... your home among the hills.

On Top of the World
I came to Wesleyan in the Fall of 2004, leaving behind what and who I
knew for broader horizons, or at least that is what the brochure told me.
Looking back, I have no idea how the person who was in the Freshman
Olympics became the person who walked at Graduation. Somewhere
between Friday night parties, May Term trips, independent studies, and even
the occasional class, the Wesleyan experience turned me into a person who I
once only dreamed I could become. Wesleyan has afforded me the
opportunity to travel across three continents, twelve countries, and thousands
of miles. Such a chance has encouraged me to take the road less traveled
rather than just read about. From this distinction arises the true benefit of a
liberal arts education, the knowledge that the world is ours for the taking, if
we have but the courage to step out or our front door. So I depart
Wesleyan, once again leaving behind what I think I have learned and who I
know, for broader frontiers, or at least that is what the Yearbook tells me...

Seniors on the Road
Whether I made runs to Morgantown or home
with friends to New Jersey, braved the weather to
Clarksburg at 3 a.m. (just to go to Denny's the
night before an exam), traveled with choir tours,
visited Audra, the hospital's ER, or Wal-Mart in
Elkins (because the one here closes too early), I
have wonderful memories. And of course, I had
the additional, occasional— almost yearly— run-ins
with the police (surprisingly enough, only
warnings, no tickets). I can't fail to mention the
few breakdowns, flat tires, and duck-taped
bumpers. I can't even begin to imagine how my
years at Wesleyan would have been different
without transportation.

Memories Never Fade
Reflecting on my four years at Wesleyan, I recall many great experiences,
everything from joining Greek life to those boring lectures on something not
remembered. But the one consistency that intersects and is reflected in my
college experiences is the people I met and the friends who were made along
the way. Coming in as a freshman in college, I was nervous that I would
never find my "niche", but the friends I made in those formative days of
orientation and freshman seminar aided in my transition from high school to
college life. These people helped to change me into the person I am today. I
entered Wesleyan as a timid freshman, but I will leave and walk across that
commencement stage as a proud and opinionated man, who is not afraid to
speak his mind. Whether I see these people next at their weddings, in
graduate school, or even in the far reaches of the globe, I know they will be
there in the near future and on down the road. I know that I will always be
able to call these people my friends.

Memorial to Sago Miners
The mine explosion happened in January at the Sago Mine, located
six miles south of Buckhannon. This tragedy was a disaster to all
those who were involved. Twelve lives were lost, one was seriously
injured, and fifteen others were injured. The tragedy resulted in very
high public recognition and the attention of media, organizations,
and the state and federal government.
West Virginia Wesleyan College reacted actively and rapidly.
On January 23rd, Wesleyan invited Senator John Rockefeller
and Senator Ted Kennedy to meet the families of Sago Miners
on campus. On March 28th, Dr. Ken Hechler, former West
Virginia Congressman and Secretary of State, was invited to
speak about coal safety issues in Hyma Auditorium in the
Christopher Hall of Science on campus. On February 23rd,
Wesleyan put students to work on mine accident data. On
March 1st, West Virginia Wesleyan College announced it
would provide full-tuition scholarships to the dependent
children of the miners who were in the Sago mine at the time
of the accident in January.
"All of us were deeply
saddened by the events at
Sago," says William R.
Haden, president of the
College. "We cannot
comprehend the challenges
each of the families face.
The entire Wesleyan
campus community clearly
wants to help each of the
families in providing
educational options for the
future."

Stories
Imprints at Heart
In the presence of our future, our past seems less than
ordinary. Yet, we must not forget our roots or those silly
little rituals of society that we have so easily learned to
discard. Traditions keep the generations alive and
vibrant.
At Wesleyan, tradition is about those same principles.
Traditions, such as Freshman Orientation, Homecoming,
Spring Sing, and Christmas on Campus, are about
beginnings, yet they are reminding us of the past. Most
importantly, they are reminding us to stay together and
enjoy the fellowship and spirit of community.
The Infinite Bond
The thing I most enjoyed about Hair is that it wasn't about egos or who got to sing the most songs. It
was about coming together as a community to share, learn, love, and grow. It not only bettered us as
individuals, but also bettered us as a department. In today's society, it's so hard to find unity. Once
one has found it, it will remain with you always.
My favorite memory is my performing "Let the Sun Shine In". It was amazing seeing the audience rise
applauding and matching my exact spirit on stage. I could tell that the show had touched them.
Seeing a touched sold-out crowd is simply awe inspiring. It makes me feel I can accomplish anything.

Wesleyan's Rockefeller Center was the home for
Wesleyan's 17 intercollegiate varsity sports. Wesleyan
athletes competed in the nationally respected and
competitive West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (WVIAC), which is a member of the NCAA
Division II league. Wesleyan's teams recorded significant
success with individual athlete and team performances, as
well as honors for many of their coaches. Many teams
participated in fundraising and volunteer activities to
enhance the athletic experience. The women's volleyball
team sponsored its first Annual Volleyball Tournament to
raise money for its program, and Bobcat football players
continued to enjoy visiting local school children with their
Bobcats and Books Program. Both individuals and teams
pushed themselves to the limits and endeavored to
accomplish both their team and personal goals.

West Virginia Wesleyan football finished 2005 with a 3-8 overall
record and a 2-6 record in the WVIAC. Several players were
named to all-conference squads as voted by the league's head

running back T. R. Dues, tight end Brad Wilt, and kicker Mike
Hibbert. Honorable mention selections included Alex Puente, Ryan
Dearman, Domonique Staten, Aaron Hoxie, Ben Vance, and Nick
Sworden.
Senior quarterback Marc Kimes ended his Wesleyan career as the
school's career leader in passing yards and completions. He also set
four individual Bobcat records during his senior campaign. In
addition to becoming the first quarterback to pass for over 3,000
yards in a single season, the Parkersburg native accounted for
3,146 yards of total affense and attempted 375 passes in 2005.
Earlier in the year Kimes broke Bill Creighton's single-game passing

Merrs Basketball
Sophomore guard/forward Jared Chafin drives
past Concord's Kent McBride.
The Wesleyan men's basketball program went into the 2005-06
season after losing the four top scorers and the four top rebounders
from the 2004-05 campaign to graduation. Additionally, the
Cats' schedule featured several NCAA Division II top twenty non
league opponents that were ranked regionally at one point in the
season (UP Johnstown, Ashland OH, Millersville PA & Edinboro
PA) along with Eastern Kentucky (2005 NCAA Div. I post season
tournament team). These two factors and a schedule that had 1 1
of the first 1 2 games being played outside of the Rockefeller Center
created issues that were hard for a young squad to overcome.
However, by the middle of February the men's basketball team had
settled on a rotation that began to play better and experience some
success. Wesleyan concluded the season with five wins in the final eight games of the season. The
successful encounters included WVIAC Tournament victories over Concord (72-70) and nationally
ranked Wheeling Jesuit (79-74) before falling to Salem International in the conference tournament
semi-finals.
Several highlights were recorded for the overall season. The Bobcat men advanced to the VWIAC
tournament semi-finals with wins over Concord (72-70) and Wheeling Jesuit (79-74). Cole Ellis was
named to the 2006 WVIAC All Tournament Team. Rocky Manchin received the George Springer
Sportsmanship Award. Dureyea Garnett ranked 2nd in the WVIAC in steals at 2.6 per game and
finished 18th in the final NCAA Div II rankings in steals per game. The team ranked 2nd in
WVIAC Team Steal per game — 10.9 spg and 7th in the Nation NCAA Div II in steals per game.

ffthletie Training
The 2005-2006 year was an excellent one for the Athletic Training
Education Program at West Virginia Wesleyan College. The
program enjoyed two wonderful additions to its full-time staff in
Drue Stapleton, M.Ed., ATC, CSCS and Brian Potter MS, ATC,
EMT. In addition, its seniors took seven out of eight spots at the
annual state athletic training conference for their senior research
presentations. As always, the students in the athletic training
program sacrificed time and energy to provide medical care for 17
WVWC varsity sports. Students worked along side full-time
certified athletic training staff and faculty in the emergency and
rehabilitative setting as part of their 800 clinical hour requirement
for the major. Seniors were accepted to graduate schools including
James Madison University, Ohio University, West Virginia University, and George Washington
University. The spring semester brought a welcomed surprise for students and staff with a trip to
UPMC Sports Medicine in Pittsburgh where they were able to see and spend time in the Superbowl
Champion Pittsburgh Steelers' athletic training, weight training, and locker room facilities. Two
current Steelers introduced themselves while there and made the day magical for all. The staff looked
forward to welcoming its newly accepted sophomores in fall of 2006 to begin the program!

to victory, and senior captain Andy Shingle defended his triple jump title.
Junior Chad Jordan captured the title in the 1 10-hurdles.
Several men's records fell during the season. Greenhowe set the 400-record both

record for the indoor 55-meter dash.
Wesleyan's women rolled to their 14th WVIAC title in last 16 years and their fourth title in a row. It was an impressive
finish to an amazing run tor a very special senior class. Senior Stephanie Hatfield won the 3,000 and 10,000 meter runs,
and qualified tor nationals in the 10,000. She closed her career with school records in the outdoor 5,000 and 10,000

record in the steeple.

Sarah Van Horn who captured both the high hurdle and heptathlon titles. Van Horn was also the team's top scorer with
30 points and was named the league's Rookie of the Year. Besides the records set by Hatfield and Erenrich, the 4X400

Cross Country
Wesleyan's women's cross country team rolled to its 10th WVIAC
title in 1 1 years, defeating runner-up Alderson-Broaddus by only
two points. The tight battle was led by the senior trio of Stephanie
Hatfield, Missy Spangler, and Leah Erenrich, as that unit placed
2nd, 3rd, and 5th respectively. Additional varsity runners on the
title team included Danielle Painter, Amanda Griffith, Erin Price,
Allison Teter, Hanna Jo Robinson, and Stefanie Tririlo. Teter was
honored as the league's Rookie-of-the-Year. This women's team is
graduating six key athletes who have led the Bobcats to four
consecutive titles. This special group includes Stephanie Hatfield,
Missy Spangler, Leah Erenrich, Danielle Painter, Annie Schuerger,
and Jill Walker.
LaTora Keigley maintains a steady pace.
Wesleyan's young men's cross country team surprised many running fans in the Fall of 2005,
finishing 2nd in the 1 1-team WVIAC field. They did this with running as many as five freshmen in
their top seven at times. Freshman Eric Cooper was the team's top finisher, placing third in the
championships. Senior Jason Gurney finished fourth, becoming just the third runner in Wesleyan
history to earn all-conference honors all four years. Two other rookies made major marks in the
season. Jarren Morlan earned all-conference honors placing ninth at the championships. Fellow
freshman Patrick Reagan was the team's top runner the following week at the NCAA Regionals in
Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.

Wesleyan's banner says it all to students as
they returned to campus in the fall: Dream it... Find
it. ..Learn it. ..Do it.
And "Do it" Wesleyan students did as they participated
in over eighty campus organizations throughout the
academic year. An Organization Fair was held at the
beginning of the school year to help students identify
with various interests and campus leaders.
Wesleyan's organizations allowed students to broaden
their overall college experience through membership,
activities outside the classroom, leadership and volunteer
service.

Now in its seventh year, the Money

SIFE students has expanded to include
nine classrooms in local schools. They
introduced economic principles through lessons, hands-
on activities and simulations. They also served as
positive role models in telling the students about the
college life. The money raised will go to Supporting
Education Abroad in Guangzhou, an organization that

Fraternity

Sorority
Sorority life at Wesleyan was recognized by four
chapters: Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha
Xi Delta, and Zeta Tau Alpha. Individual sororities
participated in fundraising throughout the year to
support their favorite charities: Alpha Gamma Delta for
juvenile diabetes, Alpha "Delta Pi for Ronald
McDonald House in Morgantown, Alpha Xi Delta's Xi
Saw for Choose Children, and Zeta Tau Alpha for
Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Theta Xi, Theta Chi, Alpha Sigma Phi, and Chi Phi
called Wesleyan home by nearly 100 active
undergraduate brothers. Though each fraternity is
unique in its own way, each chapter played a vital role
on campus through its service. Through various campus
and Buckhannon community outreach efforts, each
fraternity brought both volunteerism and learning to a
serious, but many times fun level. Along with the
sororities, many fraternities worked together to achieve
local success in the most recent Heart Walk and other
similar efforts at the Stockert Youth Center. The
opportunities provided through these strong
brotherhoods are immeasurable. The fraternities
continue to play a vital role in keeping Wesleyan a strong and healthy institution
