Brief Inprntfidns to the P laying mtb* Citbren.

«®®|HE Cithrtn is ftrung with eight Wyre Strings, which are divided into four cZZ

Inflru&iQM for the Playing m the Cithren.

By this Example alfo is demonftrated the leveral Frets or Stofs made on the Neck of the
Cithren^ the Alphabetical Letters as they are aligned to each Fret or Stop, the Letters,
omitted, that being let where the String is ftruck open and not ftop'd, th^fe feveral Letters
in your Leffons you will find varioufly placed on the feveral Lines on which places and
Strings you are to ftrike ; the firft Prehdium otLeffon of rhis Book will lead your fingers to
the Afcending and Defcending of ufual Notes on the Cithren , and your next being the
Changes on the Bells y your Ear will guide your Hand , which by a little praaicewill per-
fect you therein. .

Secondly , That being underftood I proceed to the Tuning of the Cithren , which can-
not be eafier underftood then by the Umfon , which is to make two or more Strings to agree
in one Sound, the one ftop'd, the otji^r open.

Begin firft with the Treble winding up one of them as high as it will bear and not break, then
wind up his Feltow, and make them two agree in Sound or Unifon both alike ; that done, turn
up one of your Means and flop it in (jjand Tune it to agree in Unifon or Sound with 'your
Trebles, then Tune his Fellow to him : Next, Tune the Temrs in the fame manner flopping
them in (^) and make them to agree in one Sound with your Means, laft Tune your hakes
as you did the other , topping them in (Jl) to agree irr Sound with your Tenors, by this
Rule your Cithren will be in per eft Tune , which for the proof thereof , ftrike the iBos
of each tiring as is fet in the former Example.

Thirdly , The nex* Rule you are to underftand, The proportion of Time- or Meafure,
which is ex^refled by (everal Notes or Charaders which are placed over the Tabletnre or
feveral Letters of \ our Leffons, there are 8 feveral Notes ufed in Mufic^ but 5 are only
in the Leffons to the C7:£r*«.which are the r e ,

Thefe five'Htfw arc varioufly placed on the feveral Stops or Letters for the continuing
of Somds long or fliort , and are divided into two Meafures or proportions the one called
the Semibrief or Common-Tim* % the other Tripla ; and are diftinguulied by two feveral
Moods , one of which is ufual put at the beginning of the Leffon.

The Common-Time Mood is thus marked (T The Tripla thus 7

The Semihreve or Common-Time is , when all Notes double their proportions by two
to the Semiheveflkal is,two Minims to the Semibrevt , two Crotchets to the Minim y &c.

Example.

The Trlp!a-Time is , when the Time is meafured by three Minims to a Smllrtvt with

Inftm&ions for the flaying on the Cithrw*

Thofe who defire a more full and large Accompt of the Notes , their Meafures and
Proportion, I Refer them to that Book of my Iutrotlutt Ion to the Skill of Mnfick^t lardy
printed jwg. 22. But this obferve in the Time or Notes let over your LeiTons where you
lave a Note placed over a Letter, and more Letters follow with no Notes over them >
thofe Letters are to be plaid to that Nous Meafure till another of the contrary appear.

Some G osier d Ruks4o be obfervedin Flaying on the Cithren.

-l . For your left hand in the right fingering the Stops , ever where you leave a Fret or
Stop there to leave a finger • For Example , If your firft Letter be (^) flop it with the
third finger, then your firft and fecond ringer will be ready for ( Jx& jrj if they happen to
follow: But when you have many Letters which run down to (-dLurdLjihsre fhift your firft
finger again to (f) the reft will follow with more eajfe.

For the true fingering or flopping of the full flops obferve the four fingers on the left
hand are thus accompted, the finger next the Thumb is the firfl, in order to the little finger
the fourth ; In this Example mark , the figures, placed under the Letters are afligned to the
Letters as they Hand in order.
