PREFACE
The principal aim of this little book is fulfilled in Part One, which
is a register of the descendants of Nathaniel Crocker, who died in
Buffalo, New York, in 1855 at the age of 97 years. At this writing
they have reached the number of 462. Nathaniel Crocker was a
descendant of Elder William Brewster; his wife Mehitable Lewis
was a descendant of John Howland. Thus these 462 persons are to
be counted among the descendants of both those famous Mayflower
Pilgrims. The facts here presented concerning them have been
gathered mainly through correspondence, personal visits and in-
spection of records, and research in contemporary prints. In ar-
ranging this group for publication an endeavor has been made to
give it a wider genealogical interest by the addition of matter con-
cerning persons who have married a descendant of Nathaniel, so as
better to connect with other genealogies.
It will be noticed that biographical matter other than names,
together with the places and dates of births, marriages, and deaths,
has been excluded. The footnotes, however, point to works where
much additional material may be found by those interested.
In Part Two will be found the ancestry of Nathaniel Crocker and
Mehitable Lewis. This Part contains little that is new to the gene-
alogist; it merely provides the descendants of Nathaniel and Mehit-
able with a concise and fairly complete statement of these ancestors
as far back at least as the "comeoverers."
In the course of his correspondence, the editor has been impressed
with the desirability that in each family or group of families, some
one member at least should be regarded as family historian to pre-
serve what might otherwise be lost. A few moments spent now and
then as events happen would be trifling as compared with the labor
of getting together the same data at a later time and the results
would be perfect instead of incomplete or even fragmentary. With
this in mind, the editor invites all those concerned to send him the
dates and places of all future births, marriages, and deaths in this
group of famihes that may come to their notice. He would also, as
a matter of course, solicit correction of errors, and additions that
might be made to this record as it stands.
vi PREFACE
It is unnecessary perhaps to remark upon the impossibility of
securing absolute accuracy with regard to dates. When a gravestone
inscription gives one date of death, a family bible another, a pubHshed
vital record another, the editor can only weigh possibilities.

PART I
NATHANIEL CROCKER AND HIS DESCENDANTS
Of all the affections of man, those which connect him
with ancestry are among the most natural and generous.
They enlarge the sphere of his interests, multiply his mo-
tives to virtue, and give intensity to his sense of duty to
generations to come, by the perception of obligation to
those which are past. — Josiah Quincy.

PART n
THE ANCESTORS OF NATHANIEL CROCKER AND
MEHITABLE LEWIS
There is a moral and philosophical respect for our an-
cestors which elevates the character and improves the
heart. Next to the sense of religious duty and moral
feeling, I hardly know what should bear with stronger ob-
ligation on a liberal and enlightened mind, than a con-
sciousness of alliance with excellence which is departed; and
a consciousness, too, that in its acts and conduct, and even
in its sentiments and thoughts, it may be actively operat-
ing on the happiness of those who come after it. — Daniel
Webster.
THE ANCESTORS OF NATHANIEL CROCKER
AND MEHITABLE LEWIS.
In this part are set forth the ancestors of Nathaniel Crocker and
his wife Mehitable Lewis. The arrangement is by three sections:
I. The ancestors of Col. Job Crocker, Nathaniel's father.
II. The ancestors of Mercy Freeman, Nathaniel's mother.
III. The ancestors of Mehitable Lewis, Nathaniel's wife.
The families of ancestors are not included and biographical matter
is minimized, but the footnote references point to authorities where
an abundance of such information can be found. In each section
the order that has been adopted is the one that seems most likely to
satisfy the preferences of descendants, namely, in the first section the
Crocker male line (A, B, C and D) followed by other ancestors of Col.
Job Crocker; in the second section the Brewster line (I to N);
and in the third section the Rowland Une (O to U) followed by other
ancestors of Mehitable Lewis.

search after them . . . The interest which has grown up
throughout the country during the past fifteen or twenty
years in this department of literature is a proof of great
advancement in elegant culture. — Henry Ward Beecher
in 1862.
