MUSTER ROLLS
OF
Rhode Island Troops Enlisted During
The Old French M^ar
To which is added The Journal of Captain
William Rice in 'The Expedition of IJ46
Issued at the Annual Court of the Society of

Colonial Wars in the State of Rhode Island a?id
Providence Plantations^ by its
Governor, George Leander Shepley, Esquire
and the
Council of the Society
December 30, 191 5
Providence : Printed for the Society by the Standard Printing Co.
from original MSS. in the Library of the R. I. Historical Society
FRANCE claimed the whole territory west of the
Alleghany Mountains. The English settlers
had already, by the middle of the eighteenth
century, begun to push their way through into the Ohio
Valley, and the inevitable clash came at the Great
Meadows, May 27, 1754. The Old French War had
begun.
It was a struggle for the possession of the Ohio and
Mississippi Valleys, and the colonies were involved
before the Mother Country, since the Seven Years War
was not formally declared until 1756. The Southern
colonies were drawn in before those of New England.
Rhode Island raised many companies during this
French and Indian War, and of nine of these the mus-
ter rolls are here printed for the first time. Some of
the names may occur in other printed lists, but the
whole company rolls have never before appeared beyond
the original MSS.
The journal of Captain Rice, apart from its interest as
a daily record of colonial soldiering, sheds some light
on an almost unknown episode, the unfinished expedi-
tion, as it might be called, against Canada in 1746, in
which participated the three Rhode Island companies,
the rolls of which the Society issued at its General
Court in August, 19 15.
William Rice, the captain of one of the three com-
panies, was born in Warwick, March 25, 1708. He was
the son of John Rice and grandson of John, the first of
the name in Rhode Island.
[3]
He was married December lo, 1730, by Rouse Helme,
Assistant, to Phebe Tripp of South Kingstown, who
died in 1753.
He was admitted a freeman of the Colony at New-
port, May 2, 1732, and became a man of some property,
and a good deal of position and influence. Twice
Deputy from Warwick, he was three times chosen
Assistant for the same town, and served on several com-
mittees of the Assembly.
His military experience began early, for we find him
cornet of the Providence County Troop of Horse in
1734. In 1746 he was commissioned captain of the
Second Company from Providence County, which then
included the present county of Kent. He sailed with
the company for Annapolis, and on the voyage kept the
journal which is here for the first time printed from the
MS. in the library of the Rhode Island Historical So-
ciety, to which our thanks are due for allowing us to
use not only the MS. of the journal, but those of the
muster rolls as well.
There was, as the journal shows, a good deal of sick-
ness among the soldiers, and Captain Rice seems to
have fallen a victim, for the MS. ends abruptly. He
died January 22, 1746-7, according to the muster roll
of his company.
A lieutenant of Captain Joshua Sayer's company was
appointed to succeed him May 6, 1747.
Captain Rice left no will, but from the Warwick deeds
we can see that he sold all his land before he went to the
[4]
front, thus turning his estate into money. His inven-
tory, as recorded at Apponaug, shows that ;^ 988-2-0 in
Rhode Island money was due him for wages as a cap-
tain in the King's service.
Among the other items recorded were a " Silver-hilted
sword and Belt," and a " Scarlet Velvet cap trimmed
with Gold." The total value was ^1833-0-0.
Captain Rice left the following children, whose births
are recorded in Warwick, where he seems to have lived
in Apponaug, on the Fulling Mill Cove.

THE JOURNAL
OF
CAPTAIN WILLIAM RICE
May 28*'' 1746 About this time A Sloop of War arrived at
Boston with Dispatches from his Grace the Duke of New
Castle to the Governours of New Hampshire Mafsachufsets
Bay Rhode Island Connecticut New York Jersey Pennsylvania
Maryland & Virginia signifying his Majesties Gracious inten-
tions of reducing Canada to his obedience by a number of
Troops raised in North America to be Joined by several
Batallions of his Regular Forces under the Command of his
Excellency Lieut Gen' James St Clair. In Obedience to his
Majesties Instructions by His Grace of New Castle The Gen'
Afsembly of the Colony of Rhode Island met at New Port the
beginning of June and voted three Companies of Volunteers to
be instantly raised for this Service by giving 50 L Currency
with Cloathing arms ammunition &c as bounty and En-
couragement to each Soldier. June 6*'^ I was appointed by
the Gen' Afsembly to raise and Command a Company and
upon the Seventh I was engaged and Qualified by the oaths of
Allegiance. The G Afsembly appointed William Straight ^
Robert Starey^ My First and Second Lieu'* and Stephen
Colegrove Ensign. The Committee of War having taken up
Transports and the Levies being near Completed The Recruits
were encamped on Goat Island whither my Company also re-
paired on July 16''' being now in Great expectation of Our Gen'

with the Forces from Great Britain. The Heat of the Season
and Great Rains ocasioned the Bloody flux to rage among our
Soldiers so that they Decamped and Embarked our Sick being
brought to Newport towards the middle of Agust. About
this time Edward Kinnicutt Esq'' was appointed L* Coll of our
Troops which was extremely agreeable to me. Soon after The
Com^^ of War engaged D"" Thomas Moffat Surgeon of our
Companies. After having undergone the great fatigue and
slavery of recruiting I provided stores &c for the Campaign
and Indulged the pleasure of thinking that we should soon be
ordered to Cape Breton to meet the Disciplind troops from
Home when about the middle of September heard the Reg*^
of Frampton Douglafs Paulet and h^ John Murrays with a
battalion of the Royal Scots with all their officers were Em-
barked and wind bound. The latter end of September we heard
the troops disembarkd w* great precipitation and that Gen' St
Clair arrived at London and the day afterwards sett out with
Admiral Lestock for Portsmouth where the troops were again
Embarking for Cape Breton. About the first of October the
Bloody flux almost ceased among the Soldiers but was Suc-
ceeded by a Putrid fever. Towards the middle of October when
we despaird of Our Gen' and the Forces and when our Stores
Equipage &c. were neglected and Consumed the Committee of
War received dispatches from Admiral Warren Gov^^ Shirley
and Mascarene^ advising and Imploring the Assistance of our
Forces together with large [2] reinforcements from New Hamp-
shire and Mafsachufsets Bay where upon the G Afsembly was
summoned and ordered The Troops of the Colony to Embark
and proceed to Annapolis Royal forthwith having voted that
ijean Paul Marcarene, Huguenot; Acting Governor of Nova Scotia
1740-49; born Castras Languedoc, France 1684; died in Boston, Massa-
chusetts 22 January, 1760.

each Captain be advanced 40 ;^^'^'' every Lieut [blank] every
Ensign [blank] and each non commifsioned officer and private
Soldier 2^ £ currency with a farther bounty of a blankett and
Watch Coat. Coll Kinnicut was dispatched to Boston to
concert measures with the Admiral and Mr Shirley. Our
Coll returnd and brought the welcome tidings of the Brest
Squadron with 4000 Land forces aboard under the command of
Duke d Anvill who arrived upon our Coast the Latter end
of August or First of September were gone off without
attempting anything after having suffered extremely by the
lofs of The Duke (who died as they entered Chibucto^) and
great numbers of their seamen and Soldiers by Sicknefs and
some ships by strefs of Weather. The latter end of October
our men were Embarked and the first of November we waited
for Wind.
November 3^^ Cap*" Spry of the Chester arrivd to wait upon
his Admiral (Warren) at Newport by whom we learnd that
(being then but six days from Annapolis) the French had
retired from before Annapolis leaving their baggage behind and
that the Congress at Breda was broke up without concluding
upon any measures towards peace and that L^ Sandwich (our
plenipo) was returnd to London and that Admiral Lestock with
25 Capital Ships and 80 transports with loooo Land forces
under Gen^ St Clair were saild upon a secret Expedition.
November 4*'' Tuesday Saild from Newport aboard the .
Brigantine Leopard with my officers and Company (being
favourd with Coll Kinnicutt and D"" Moffatt as Fellow
pafsengers) together with the Snow Africa and and Brig' Nept-
une under the Convoy of the Tartar commanded by Cap* Peter
Marshal. The weather was agreeable and favourable when we
1 Halifax
[47]
came from Port but the wind towards evening proving short it
was Determined by the Commodore that we should anchor in
TarpauUn Cove on EUzabeth Island whither accordingly came
to about Midnight.
Wednesday being the 5''^ The Commodore displayed his
signals for sailing early in the morning and brought us before
noon into Holms Hole on Marthas Vineyard where we anchored.
After we came to anchor Cap*" Marshal with the Commifsioned
officers of the other Companys came aboard and Dined with
us. After Dinner we went ashore and commemorated this
great anniversary but were prevented from returning aboard in
the Evening as we resolvd by stormy and excefsively bitter
cold weather. "We suppd at Mrs Chaces upon plenty of
pummeled Beef where after remembring dutifully his Majesty
His Family and our General we retired to Rest.
Thursday November 6"^ Early we were saluted with the most
unwelcome [3] news that the Snow Africa with Cap'" Sawyers
Company aboard was drove ashore in the last night. Coll
Kinnicut Cap*" Marshal myself with the other officers then
ashore used all pofsible means to gett to her assistance which
we did by the help of the Commodores Barge at ten in the
forenoon where we learnd that she went ashore at Eight last
night after cutting away her foremast. Miserable and very
affecting was this Spectacle of Drenchd Soldiers with the
floating and spoiled ruind Stores. A Council of the officers
present was Held to deliberate upon this disastrous Event
wherein it was agreed to Distribute Cap*" Sawyers company
aboard the Tartar and the other transports and to proceed to
Annapolis Royal with all pofsible Dispatch. A proper place
for the Reception of the disernbarkd soldiers was provided
with every thing necefsary for their use and Comfort. In the
[48]
afternoon the Company became very mutinous but the Coll
& Officers by properly by exerting themselves reducd them
to Submifsion and sent their chests aboard the Tartar. The
weather is extremely keen and piercing cold.
Friday November 7^11 Coll Kinnicutt and Cap*" Marshall sent
by express to Newport an account of our misfortune. Cap*"
Marshal empowered John Norton to asist Cap*" Clark in taking
care of the wreckd vefsel (she bilging yesterday morning) and
cargo. The weather is still tempestous but every interval of its
lulling or abatement is employd in saving the officers stores
and provisions. This afternoon we walked some miles upon
the Island which is of a poor thin sandy soil.
Saturnday November 8*'' This day was employd in Reem-
barking the Soldiers. Michael Smiry a Nantucket Indian whom
I enlisted last night and resignd to Cap'" Sawyer elopd this
morning from his Keepers leaving his Bount}^ Money and Hat
behind Him. Sergeant Hows and Arron Gershum an Indian
Soldier of Cap*" Sawyers Company had deserted likewise in
the night or proceeding Day.
Sunday November 9**^ This day the weather began to
moderate so that the officers Stores were put on board the
vefsel that they were to Embark in.
Monday November io*'» Michael Dooly of my Company died
of a fever aboard and was brought ashore and interrd this
morning. This day we greatly diverted ourselves at the Ex-
pence of two of our Officers who had made an excursion in the
last night upon the con[fines] of two Fair Damsels under the
directions of a Guide who first Jiltd and then betrayd them by
discovering the whole plan to us for a very small reward. This
Evening we regaled ourselves and repaired aboard our own
vef sells.
[49]
Tuesday November 1 1"^ The Commodore made the Signals
for sailing at four in the morning the Wind being fair but small.
In the Evening off Sandy Point of Nantucket the wind failed
so we anchord upon the Shoals.
Wednesday November 12*'^ The Wind coming at N E at
four in the Morning we stood in for Sandy point where we Came
to anchor having [4] grounded upon a Mud bank a few minutes
through the Ignorance Negligence or deceit of the person who
Sounded the Lead.
Thursday November 13*^ Went ashore with Coll Kinnicut
Lie* Carpenter & D"^ Moffatt. This part of the Island is very
barren being nothing but a Heap of Sand thinly covered with
poor Shrubs and some Spear grafs. We saw some Indians who
had killd great store of Sea Fowl of whom we Enquired con-
cerning a large Ship that we saw upon the back of the Island
Yesterday Afternoon in distrefs They saw Her and thought
she Cleared the Island.
Friday November 14* Wind still contrary The Brig* Neptune
who had dragd a league to leeward and who had been orderd
up by the Commodore came up this morning to an anchor
near us. This Day dined aboard the Tartar with Cap*" Marshal
and Suppd aboard the Neptune with Cap*" Cole. When we
returnd aboard the Soldiers were very disorderly and generally
drunk. Upon Enquiry I learnd that one of my Officers had
sold them a barrell of Cyder at Cent per Cent. I propose to
prevent this traffick for the future as a prostitution of his
Maj'" Commifsion and a practice base mean and Injurious.
Saturday November 1$^^ Wind still contrary and blowing
very fresh.
Sunday November 16"^ Capt»» Marshall came aboard us and
tarryed untill Dinner time when blowing hard at N He left us
[50]
suddenly and went aboard. The Neptunes Boat drove ashore.
This Evening it proves very stormy and we ride in much
danger as I apprehend especially as the Wind is expected from
the North west.
Monday November I'p^ Last Night It blowing fiercely from
N by W our anchor came Home which threw us into great
consternation but letting go another instantly The Vefsel
brought up and we rode the night throughout well. We are
now very uneasy and anxious under our present circumstances
which are such as the Wind blows that if our Anchors fail we
must inevitably go upon a wild Lee shore which God avert.
I am informed this day several partys at Cards spend the night
under [covering .?] of the lights afsigned the Sick to prevent the
like disorderly and dif solute courses I have chargd and enjoind
my officers to take away their Cards and throw them over board.
To my great surprize I likewise understand one of my officers
sells Apples to the Soldiers at an Exorbitant price. I have been
much disorderd these three days past by cough and oppref-
sion of my Breast &c. The Wind seems to come about to
the westward so that we hope to pursue our Voyage to morrow.
Tuesday November i8 at 3 o'Clock this morning the Seamen
are preparing to sail. Cap*" Marshal sends his barge and getts
off the Neptunes long Boat. This [5] morning I hear one of my
officers sold a barrell of Syder to the Soldiers at 8^ currency —
But if I put not an end to such monstrous and vile practices may
be cashierd for his offences. This morning four packs of cards
were taken from the Soldiers and thrown over board. Cap*"
Marshal and his pilot comes aboard and breakfasts with us and
conclude to make sail in Quest of Harbour.
Wednesdnay November 19*'^ Last Night by advice of the pilots
came to anchor off Cape Pog at 11 o'Clock expecting the Wind
[51]
Southerly in the morning. At Two the Wind blew fresh from
N E and by five this morning blew very fiercely soon after which
we Dragd and our Best Anchor being lett go she brought up but
rode very hard and uneasy. At Day break the Sea and Wind
were in a violent conflict. At Nine o'Clock the Colony Sloop
slipd and bore away soon after which the Brig' Neptune was
discoverd to be ashore. After various counsels It was deter-
mind ab* Two o'Clock to slip our Anchor and Stand in for the
Harbour where by the favour of Divine Providence we arrivd
in thirty eight minutes. Coll Kinnicut I and D'' Moffatt went
ashore before Evening where we had the extreme pleasure of
meeting Cap^ Cole and of Hearing that the Company and Crew
v/ere all Safe contrary to the judgment of the most Experiencd
Here who afsurd Cap*" Marshal that they must perish on the
Sea — However that did not prevent Cap*" Marshal from Send-
ing a Whale Boat which brought The Officers safe Here.
Thursday Nov 20 The Measles broke out upon me and I
became very Sick,
Friday Nov 28 found myself very weak low and reducd and
had Been uncommonly bad for the Disease owing I suppose to
the fatigue anxiety and Distrefs I was in when invaded by the
Distemper before getting ashore. Now I learned Cap*" Sawyer
was Dispatched to Newport and the General Opinion was we
should be recalld.
Wednesday Dec^ 3 Cap*" Sawyer returnd and brought In-
structions to proceed to Annapolis. The Measles and Putrid
fever universal in Cap*" Coles Company broke in upon mine to
my great Concern.
Sunday Dec 7*'' Cap*" Marshall in the Colony sloop saild
for Holms Hole to take aboard provisions for the Transport
sloop that no time might be lost. -Upon the tidings of pro-
[52]
ceeding to Annapolis Great number of Our Soldiers deserted
amongst whom were Twelve of my Company four of whom
were recovered By persons Employed to Apprehend Them.

ing to Rhode Island over land but is detaind by very Rigorous
weather. This day John Salisbury died.
Tuesday Dec 23 This day it was resolvd to Leave Lieu*
Straight to Do duty with the Sick and March Home the re-
coverd men by Land.
Thursday DeC" 25 Cap*" Sawyer left us And Sett forth with
Dispatches for Newport as Did Lieu* Wilkinson for Boston
Great Trouble arises in adjusting our accounts from an Excef-
sive disposition in the people to Extortion Knavery and Chi-
canery.
