The Ancestors and Descendants of
Captain Benjamin Stratton Ogden
and his wife
Nancy (Preston) Ogden
Compiled by
JOSIE POWELL grONJL
and
WILLIAM OGDEN POWELL
INTRODUCTION.
This pamphlet is not a family history, it is simply a list of
Ogden and Preston descendants, and is published for the purpose
of keeping a record of this branch of the two families. We under-
stand that more comprehensive histories of both families have
been commenced, and trust that this list will be of some value in
their compilation.
In order to keep the price within the means of all, we have not
given dates of birth and death except in the case of those who are
of Odgen-Preston birth. With that exception, we have given all the
information we were able to obtain by correspondence. Unless
stated to the contrary, all those named in the list of descendants
are living at the date of publication, so far as we have been in-
formed. By request, we have omitted the record of several first
marriages, where there were no children. We believe the system
of numbering is so simple as to require no explanation.
We will cheerfully furnish street addresses or any other in-
formation we may have, to those desiring it. All communications
should be addressed to Mrs. M. E. Stone, St. Peter, Minnesota.
Following this introduction will be found a brief sketch of the
Ogden and Preston lines, beginning with the first ancestors who
came to the American colonies; after the sketch will be found a
list of six generations of descendants, complete up to date, so far
as we know.
We wish to express our gratitude to all who have assisted us
in the preparation of this list, and especially to H. P. Gerald,
Washington, D. C, (a descendant of P.uth Ogden, sister of Ben-
jamin Stratton Ogden), who has furnished a great deal of infor-
mation on the Ogden family, and whose unfailing courtesy and
helpfulness have been the greatest possible encouragement to us.

OGDEN.
FIRST GENERATION.
This branch of the Ogden family has been traced back to
the year 1453 in England. The first one of our line to come to
America was Richard Ogden, who came from Bradley Plain, South-
hampton, England; he was born July 1, 1610; married Mary Hall,
August 21, 1631; he is said to have married a second wife, also
named Mary, from whom our line descends. He came to South-
hampton, Long Island, in 1640, with his brother John (called "John
Ogden the Pilgrim"), who married Jane Bond and became the
ancestor of the Elizabethtown branch of the family. These broth-
ers were the builders of Gov. Kieft's stone church at New Am-
sterdam, N. Y., about 1642-1648. Later, Richard Ogden settled
at Fairfield, Conn., where he died in 1687. His children were:
Richard, who m. Sarah Staple.
David, who m. Abigail Sherwood.
John, afterwards of New Jersey (our ancestor).
Hannah, wife of Sergeant Samuel Ward.
Thankful, wife of Daniel Silliman.
Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Meeker.
Daughter, name unknown, wife of John Pine.
SECOND GENERATION.
John Ogden (son of Richard 1 ), was born at Fairfield, Conn.,
in 1671; married first Mary Dimon, second Sarah , the
latter is supposed to be our ancestress. He moved to New Jersey,
with about twenty-six other immigrants, about 1696; they settled
in what is now Fairfield Township, Cumberland County, New
Jersey. John Ogden was one of the leading men in this little
Puritan settlement; he was an Elder in the old Presbyterian
church, Justice of the Peace, tax assessor, Freeholder, farmer,
miller, an extensive land owner, and a Lieutenant in the Colonial
Militia. He was the ancestor of the "South Jersey Ogdens." He
died Dec. 22, 1745, "in the 75th year of his age," according to his
tombstone, which is still standing in the old Cohansey Cross-Roads
Graveyard, near Fairton. His children were:
John, who m. 1st Mary Brooks, 2nd Bertha Reed.
Daniel, of Deerfield, who m. Rachael Moore.

David, who m. 1st Hannah Dayton, 2nd Mary Bateman.
Thomas, of Fairfield, N. J.
Joseph, who m. Abigail Pierson.
Samuel.
Jonathan, who m. Hannah, dau. of William Dare.

Bathsheba.
THIRD GENERATION.
Thomas Ogden (son of John2, Richard 1 ), was born in 1720;
married first Sarah Harris, daughter of Thomas Harris; second,
Violetta Harris, daughter of Nathan Lawrence and widow of
Thomas Harris; third, Mrs. Sarah Westcott; fourth, Mrs. Sarah
(Austin) Stratton. There is good evidence that the third and
fourth wives were the same woman, born Sarah Austin, daughter
of Cornelius Austin and Martha (Soulard) Austin. Sarah Austin
married first Benjamin Stratton, second Henry (?) Westcott,
third Thomas Ogden. She was born July 26, 1730. A Stratton
genealogy says: "She is remembered as a person in Quaker dress,
of Puritan principles."
Thomas Ogden lived all his life in Fairfield Township, N. J.
He owned the mills there after the death of his father, John
Ogden. The grist mill and saw mill were known as "Ogden's
mills" for a century. Thomas was an Elder in the Old Stone
Church near Fairton, N. J., and he is buried there in its cemetery,
beside his last wife, Sarah Austin. His first two wives were
buried in the "old Cohansey Cross-Roads Graveyard." His tomb-
stone reads: "In Memory of Thomas Ogden, who departed this life
the 23rd Day of December, 1785, Aged 65 Years." The epitaph
on Sarah Austin Ogden's tombstone is: "In Memory of Sarah
Ogden, widow of Thomas Ogden, who Died November 1, 1804,
Aged 74 years. 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.' "
Thomas Ogden and his family were of unfailing loyalty to
the cause of the Colonies, and while he was too old for active
military service in the Revolutionary War, he held a Civil office
during that period. He was one of the "Chosen Freeholders" for
Fairfield Township, Cumberland County, N. J., in 1775, 1776, 1778,
1779 and 1780, and as such officer was required to take the oath
of Allegiance. His children by his first wife, Sarah Harris, were:
Thomas, who m. Abigail Dare.
Sarah, who m. her cousin, Samuel Ogden.
Children by last wife, Sarah Austin:
Violetta, Martha and Joseph, supposed to have died young.
Benjamin Stratton, who m. Nancy Preston.
Thomas, who m. Ruth Newcomb.
Ruth, who m. James Ogden.

FOURTH GENERATION.
Benjamin Stratton Ogden (son of Thomas 3 , John 2, Richard 1 ),
was born Aug. 8, 1767; m. in 1786 Nancy, the daughter of Levi
and Dedemiah Preston. He was Captain of Artillery, U. S. A.,
War of 1812, and Asst. Deputy Quartermaster in 1814-1815.
About 1816 he and his family left New Jersey and settled near
Cleves, Hamilton County, Ohio. Nancy Preston Ogden died May
27, 1847. Benjamin Stratton Ogden died Feb. 5, 1849. They were
both buried in Berea Cemetery, near Cleves, where their tomb-
stones are still to be seen. The names of their children, as well
as six generations of their descendants, will be found further on
in this pamphlet.
In regard to the origin of the name, and the coat-of-arms of
the Ogden family, we quote, by permission, from the preface to
"The Ogden Family in America, Elizabethtown Branch," by Wm.
Ogden Wheeler:
"The name Ogden comes from Saxon ock, oak-tree, and den,
a locol termination synonymous with dean, a wooded
valley The name is thus freely rendered, 'the oak valley,'
'oak dale,' 'vale of oaks,' 'oak vale,' etc. The name has been
variously spelled do Oketon, Oketone, Ocktone, Okedone, Okedon,
Okeden, Oakden, Okden, and finally, Ogden. The earliest date of
the present spelling is about 1500 A. D., while Okeden is found
as late as 1738.
"On all escutcheons of the arms-bearing Ogden families of
England, the oak branch or oak leaves and acorns, are always
found, and usually in the crest. For 'Okeden of Ellingham in
Hampshire,' the arms consist of 'Sable, on a fesse argent, between
three acorns gold, as many oak leaves vert,' the same display as
the Hants family of Ogdens in this book." *
* Those wishing copies of the coat-of-anns, ready for framing,
should communicate with L. VanAlstyne, Sharon, Conn.

FOURTH GENERATION.
Levi Preston, (son of IsaacS, Levi 2, Rogeri), was born 1732.

unknown to us. Levi Preston was Lieut, and later Captain in
the New Jersey Militia, Revolutionary War. He died in 1790, and
his estate was administered by his son-in-law, Capt. Benjamin
Stratton Ogden. We have been able to learn of but one child of
Levi and Dedemiah Preston, their daughter Nancy.
