In presenting the 1909 edition of the Ottawa City Directory, we wish to call
attention to the annual report of the Board of Trade, recently puhlished, which contains
statistics regarding the city and facilities affordcd by it to manufacturers and residentR.
As a manufacturing centre Ottawa affords exceptional opportunities. It has the
greatest water power in North America approximating 100,000 horse power within
its limits, and
;
O.OOO within ten miles of the City Hall, and O\'er 9UO,000 within a radius
of forty milea. It is within easy reach of an abundance of raw material. Lumber,
brick, and cement for building are all manufactured in the City. It affords many
opportunitie8 for industries that are not represented in the vicinity, or even in
the country. It haR ample transportation facilities, nine steam roads entering the
City, with others under construction or survey. It is on the main line of the
Canadian Pacific Railway, and every tram, east and west, by the shortest route, passes
through Ottawa and only about 100 miles of additional railway are required to tap the
Grand Trunk Pacific Transcontinental. In the near future, the city will be served by
three direct trunk lines, east and west.
It is the terminus of a direct line to New York and will shortly be connecrt:d
by an air line with Quebee City.
It is the centre of the largest lumber market in the world.
As a residential city, being the seat of the F
dera.l Government and the official
residence of the GovernOl.-Ueneral, it is the centre of social life of Canada. and having a
magnificent climate the year round, and being well provided with an excellent system of
water supply, and with parks, driveways, shady avenues and boulevards, it makes
an ideal home centre.
It has the Kational Victoria Museum, the National' Art Gallery, the Central
Experimental Farm, the Royal Observatory, the Fisheries Exhibit, the Parliamentary
and Public Libraries, the Royal Mint, and he best annual Agricultural and Industrial
Exhibition and Fat Stock Show in Eastern Canada.
The number of individual names in this volume, by actual count, exclusive of
firms corporations, etc., is 31,596, an increase of 566 over 1908 issue. By using our
usual multiple of 2!:j, we have an estimated
