WHOM

WE

SERVE

The Daily and Weekly Newspapers of Canada, with the
Magazines and Trade and Religious Papers are received
at the offices of The Dominion Press Clipping
Agency, 74-76 Church St., Toronto, once every
hour or eight mails a day.

Each paper as received is given a number, so that after
reading it may be carefully filed away. All papers
are kept on file.

The papers are distributed to the different readers, and
EVEEY WORD in each paper is carefully, but rapidly scanned.
The subjects we read for are too numerous to mention,
suffice it to say they run away up in the thousands. As each
client s name or subject appears it is marked and passed on
to the clippers.

Each mention is clipped and pasted on a printed slip, which
then passes to the stampers to have stamped on the slip the
name of the paper, the date of the issue, and the city or
town the paper is published in.

The clippings then pass to the sorters, who rapidly file them
into each client s box. They are then mailed as desired
weekly, tri-weekly or daily.

Our clients range from he rag man in the slums of Toronto
to the rulers of nations, touching business men and firms.
Governments, musicians, authors, professors, scientists and
the nobility.

INTRODUCTION.

* In presenting the 1909 edition of the Ottawa City Directory, we wish to call

attention to the annual report of the Board of Trade, recently published, which contains
statistics regarding the city and facilities afforded by it to manufacturers and residents.

As a manufacturing centre Ottawa affords exceptional opportunities. It has the
greatest water power in North America approximating 100,000 horse power within
its limits, and 230,000 within ten miles of the City Hall, and over 900,000 within a radius
of forty miles. It is within easy reach of an abundance of raw material. Lumber,
brick, and cement for building are all manufactured in the City. It affords many
opportunities for industries that are not represented in the vicinity, or even in
~~~ the country. It has ample transportation facilities, nine steam roads entering the
City, with others under construction or survey. It is on the main line of the
Canadian Pacific Railway, and every tram, east and west, by the shortest route, passes
through Ottawa and only about 100 miles of additional railway are required to tap the
Grand Trunk Pacific Transcontinental. In the near future, the city will be served by
three direct trunk lines, east and west.
It is the terminus of a direct line to New York and will shortly be connected
by an air line with Quebec City.
It is the centre of the largest lumber market in the world.
As a residential city, being the seat of the Federal Government and the official
residence of the Governor-General, it is the centre of social life of Canada, and having a
magnificent climate the year round, and being well provided with an excellent system of
water supply, and with parks, driveways, shady avenues and boulevards, it makes
an ideal home centre.
It has the National Victoria Museum, the National Art Gallery, the Central
Experimental Farm, the Royal Observatory, the Fisheries Exhibit, the Parliamentary
and Public Libraries, the Royal Mint, and Jhe best annual Agricultural and Industrial
Exhibition and Fat Stock Show in Eastern Canada.
The number of individual names in this volume, by actual count, exclusive of
firms corporations, etc., is 31,596, an increase of 566 over 1908 issue. By using our
usual multiple of 2f, we have an estimated
POPULATION OF 86,889
for the City of Ottawa at the end of May, 1909.
The City occupies an area of 5119 acres or 8 square miles with 143.05* miles of
Streets, 88.61 miles of Sewers, 135.30 miles of Permanent Sidewalks, an Assessment
of $70,235,160.00, Exemptions 19,726,955.00.
We again desire to thank onr patrons for their continued support, assuring them
that we have spared no effort to make the present volume as complete and accurate as
possible.
