Ripa's Iconologia first published 1593. Present work (engraved throughout) is a selection of 200 allegorical representations, drawn by Gottfried Eichler the Younger from Ripa's descriptions in earlier eds., but omitting the text. In addition to the allegory, each plate has been supplied with an example of the subject represented, usually taken from the Bible or classical writers. The example is explained in a Latin title at head and a German couplet at foot
Issued in 10 pts. of 20 plates each (with section title), probably from 1758 through 1760. See Cesare Ripa, Baroque and Rococo pictorial imagery, p. xv
The ill. after Eichler's drawings were etched chiefly by Jeremias Wachsmuth, with some by Emmauel Eichel, Christian Halbaur, & Jakob Wangner
Includes indexes in German and Latin to pts. 1-5 and 6-10
Bound following plate 20 in Getty copy is the lower portion of an engraving by G.L. Hertel after a painting by Simon Vouet depicting St. Peter freed from prison by an angel. It was printed by Johann Georg Hertel, and bears the numbering "No. 107" and "3."
Bound facing the section titles of Pars IV, VI & VII and at the end of the vol. are three upper and one lower portions of decorative etchings of rocaille work (2nd and 4th identical). The 3rd retains its legend; it was designed by Jeremias Wachsmuth and printed by Johann Georg Hertel, and bears the number 148. See Berlin Ornamentstichsammlung, 129 (where the 2nd and 4th etchings are illustrated in full)
Binding: early mottled calfskin. Spine tooled in blind (traces of gilding). Edges mottled red & blue
Purchase inscription of Dominicus Lysogorski, who bought the book for 44 florins in 1765. Bookplate of George Matthews, Arch Brook Library, dated 1832. Signature of J.W. Rimington
