In
My
Life

There are places I remember all my life,
though some have changed,
some forever, not for the better,
some have gone and some remain.

All these places had their moments,
with lovers and friends I still recall;
some are dead and some are living —
in my life I've loved them all.

Dedication

We, the class of 1977 take great pride and pleasure in dedicating our
yearbook to a man who has demonstrated the qualities of leadership,
friendship and a sense of humor which we admire and wish to
emulate, a person whose desire and ability to understand students has
touched all. In expression of our warmest thanks and appreciation, we
dedicate our yearbook to Mr. John Pierce.

In Memory of

Kimberly Irene Mowery
December 1, 1959 - September 1, 1974

I try to live my life as I live each day;

I try to live it to the fullest extent.

Life is incredible — something I am unable

to describe, but able to feel.
There are dreams and there are promises,

which give us something to live for in

search for a better, happier life!
There is time — time to live your life and

re-dream your dreams and promises;
And there is or may be an end to this

incredible life, which we all live so fully.

Life is a circle of memories which we

sometimes can't forget.
There are hardships and misfortunes.
But to me life means more than to live,

but to understand one another and

to love everyone.
Believe in what you know best of your life

as you've lived it so far.
There are many unfortunate accidents,

but this too is part of what we people

call life!

It is here to live, cherish, remember, love,

and possibly improve.
Try to make the best of it.

D.H.S. Choir

Life is not quite complete without man's expression
of himself through the arts.

The D.H.S. Choir, under the direction of Roger
Jarvis, endeavors to achieve this expression through
the practice and the performance of both classical and
contemporary music. Because of Roger Jarvis's
direction and the dedication of its members, the Choir
this year has been one of the largest and the best in the
area, with capacity audiences at every performance.

A.F.S.

During the past year, the Duxbury Chapter of
A.F.S. has become a great success. Under the new
leadership of President Leslie Wiedman and
advisor, Mrs. Cynthia Stone, the group has
accomplished many things, including the hosting of
twenty foreign students this past summer, a get-
together with the Plymouth A.F.S. Chapter, and a
spirited Christmas dance. Mr. Kopke, the local
A.F.S. Chairman, along with other members of the
adult group worked on many of our projects with
us and co-sponsored our reception at the Art
Complex, which officially welcomed our A.F.S. -er
this year, Helga Buvick. Helga, who lived with her
host family, the Douglas Lousecks on Surrey Lane,
was from Glomford, Norway, she "loves Duxbury
and all the people here."

Jorge Patron, a visitor from Merida, Mexico who
affiliated with A.F.S. on his arrival was chosen the
friendliest boy in the Senior Class. Jorge lived with
the Ralph Stoughtons on Onion Hill Road.
Together, Helga and Jorge added a special touch to
our town with their warm and outgoing
personalities. They will be greatly missed.

The family and friends of Susan Greene, our
A.F.S.-er in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, counted the days
until her return. Susan left in the middle of her
junior year and has returned to share all her
experience with us.

Looking ahead, Maura Mastrogiovanni is our
exchange student for next year. We wish Maura
good luck!

Outing Club

In the summer of 1976 the D.H.S. Outing Club
went on a backpacking trip to the Grand Tetons
of Wyoming. As well as doing extensive
climbing in the Teton Range, the five
participants climbed in Yellowstone National
Park and other national parks in Wyoming and
South Dakota.

This year club officers Mark Dewire, Leslie
Wiedmann, Donald Hagney, and Kevin
Heneghan organized and led bi-monthly trips up
north. Among the treks that the outing club has
ventured on are backpacking and hiking
excursions in the White Mountains region of
New Hampshire, with cross country skiing trips
in Maine and New Hampshire.

The aim of the Outing Club is to generate an
appreciation among Duxbury students for the
outdoors and to give those students an
opportunity to engage in wilderness recreation.
A trip for next summer is being planned for the
Canadian Rockies or the Pacific Crest Trail.

Literary Magazine

The High School Literary Magazine,
Tertza Rima, would be pleased to an-
nounce that this year we have a new and
hitherto unpublished short story by Er-
nest Hemingway entitled "The Old
Woman and the Sea", but seeing that
Ernest Hemingway is dead and left no
story by that name, we doubt its au-
thenticity and are holding the story until
further notice. At any rate our staff-edi-
tors, Rob Ruderman, Yasmin Daikh, art
editor, Maureen Roe, and supervisor,
Benito Rakower — had a lot of fun and
even published some excellent student
writing and art when we weren't busy
talking about overthrowing the govern-
ment or reading Mao's little red book.
We wish to thank all our contributors
and patrons for a successful year.

The 1976 Fall Tournament

The Junior Prom — an event filled with antici-
pation and nervousness, long gowns and stiff
tuxedos, perhaps even beauty and elegance. The
Junior Prom of May 7, 1976, at Dreamwold of
Scituate, combined all of these into a memorable
evening. Undaunted by the rain, couple after
couple drove up to the front portico and entered
the ball to enjoy an evening of dinner and
dancing. Highlighting the evening was the selec-
tion of Leslie Lormer as Prom Queen of 1976,
along with Mary Maguire and Beth Marconi as
the court. Special thanks are owed to the prom
committee, chaired by Lisa Sonntag, who met
every forseeable problem and spent hours of
their own time on prom-night to decorate the
hall.

D.H.S. Band

The D.H.S. Marching Band, led by Michon
Doheny, lended support to both the soccer
team and the football team again this year.
This year's band was the largest in the
history of Duxbury. The many band
members, under the direction of Arthur
Johnson, were kept busy all year long with
parades, concerts, and other activities, in
addition to the football and soccer games.
Some of the band members were also active
in S.E.M.S.B.A., Southeast District, and All-
State competitions. The band is a very
dedicated group which will continue to grow
in the coming years.

Homecoming
Week-end 1976

Homecoming kings and queens, boy cheerlead-
ers, pep rallies, football games, parades, floats . . .
these are only some of the memories that will
remain long after the 1976 Homecoming week-end
is over. Homecoming began with the traditional
pep rally before the Thanksgiving football game
against Cohasset. The Homecoming queens and
kings were announced by Mr. Pierce. Senior Lori
Wirt and her senior court, Wendy Pierce and Car-
mel Shields, junior Andrea Miller, sophomore Tina
Hurley, and freshman, Mary Ann Caleskie, were
chosen as queens. Bill Thompson and his court
Dan Kates and Frank Hyer, were chosen as kings.
Preceeding the rally was the Thanksgiving morning
parade. The freshmen won the award for the best
float. Later that day Dragon's football team lost to
the Clippers, 14-6. To end the week-end, the Cross
Roads played at the dance.

Senior Play

On December 10th and 11th,
the curtain opened on the
Senior Class Play, "Once In a
Lifetime." With a cast and crew
of over eighty Seniors, this was
one of the most spectacular
events ever staged at D.H.S.
Taking on the mammoth task of
directing was Richard Miller
along with his assistant David
Jenness. The capacity crowds on
both nights were treated to a
dazzling display of talent,
magnificent sets and beautiful
costumes. However, behind all

of this glitter were many weeks
of grueling rehearsals and hard
work. The audience got only a
glimpse of this fatigue with one
"stagestruck" backdrop and a
"backwards" set. Undaunted,
the play continued and the rest
is history. "Once In A Lifetime"
truly made its mark in the
annals of D.H.S. Theatre.

#355

Thespian Troupe #355 at D.H.S. is the
core of the drama club. Over 200 students
participated in the ten shows produced
last year. With the addition of the new
little theater, drama has taken on a new
dimension at D.H.S. This has meant a lot
more work, but the more than 40 troupe
members have met the challenge. A lot of
time and effort was spent by the many
dedicated troupe members and
dramatically inclined students. The
officers, Pres. — Penny Stott, V.P. —
Pegeen Galvin, Tres. — Tony Kelso, Sect.
— Melissa Hughes, and advisor, Mr.
Miller, have worked hard to co-ordinate
dramatic activities. Amy Boli built
displays; John Bradford organized sets;
Arthur Freeland took on the mammoth
task of lighting; Mike Prendergast
arranged ticket sales for many shows;
Anne Ruderman furnished the troupe
with a tremendous costume wardrobe;
Rob Ruderman publicized shows yielding
capacity audiences. William Nourse
organized lobby for our shows. Many
others have helped make this a successful
year.

Baseball

Following a dismal 3-14 record in '75, the
1976 Baseball team rebounded with a very
successful season. Captains Jeff Bailey and
Steve Andrews led the way to an 11-7
season. Not until the final game were the
Dragons mathematically eliminated from
the State Tournament. For his fine perform-
ance, including a record-breaking.444 bat-
ting average, Jeff Bailey was named to the
South Shore League All-Star team. Though
Duxbury has lost some key players, Coach
Murphy remains optimistic for another fine
season, thanks to these returning starters:
Seniors Peter Sinnott, Danny Kates, Manny
Fernandes, Scott Naven, and under-
classmen Brad Colton, John Donius, Andy
Haskell, and Sean Sheehan.

Softball

The Varsity Softball season of
1976 was a rebuilding year. The
team consisted of Senior Captains
Connie Wilson and Gale Sanders;
Juniors — Liz Hammond, Sheree
Heap, Gail MacCallum, Paula Rear-
don and Carmel Shields; Soph-
omores — Adele Angers, Sue Jen-
kins, Carla Murphy, Nicki Noel,
Pam Teravainen, Leslie Weidman,
and Jill Willingham; Freshman —
Tammy Colvin and Holly King. Al-
though this young team lacked
game experience, they managed to
place 4th with an 8-8 record. The
season was highlighted by starting
pitcher Gail MacCallum who
placed on the All-Star Team and
was elected Most Valuable Player,
both for the 3rd straight year. The
team as a whole, along with their
Coach, Pat Shea, continually exhib-
ited great spirit, and competiveness
throughout each and every game.
The season of 1977 with so many
players returning should be a
"BANGO" year.

Girl's Tennis
Team

The 1976 D.H.S. Girl's Tennis Team once again held
an undefeated season and the South Shore League
Champs for the third year in a row. The team
consisted of Captains Lederle Tenney and Kathi
Hopkins. Also on the team were Sue Hanson, Judy
Mitchell, and Kim Carson. Juniors were Donna Doane,
Liz Case, Charlene Woods and Wendy Hall.
Sophomores were Lauren Tenney, Joan Kellar, Kathy
MacCormick and freshman Debbie Donohue coached
by Mrs. Faith Heneghan.

The team competed in the South Shore League
Tournament and dominated in the finals with Lauren
Tenney vs. Donna Doane in the finals with Lauren
defeating Donna 2-0. Kathi Hopkins and Greg Sbraccia
won the mixed doubles and Lederle Tenney with Sue
Hansen in the Doubles.

D.H.S. Golf

The 1976 D.H.S. Golf Team, coached by Bob Hayes and captained by Seniors
George Arnold, David Garrity and Bill Wilcox compiled another undefeated season,
thus leading to its fourteenth straight league championship. The Team qualified for
the State Tournament at Easton Country Club leading all qualifiers by 17 strokes.

Perhaps the best team ever, they finished second in the state to Chicopee at
Foxboro Country Club. This year the Dragons should do extremely well with their
young, but experienced team. Returning are Seniors Peter Ayers, David Hallowell,
Mike Johnson, Andy Moss, Ned Emerson, and Doug Wilcox; Juniors Bob Jones, Mike
Colclough, and Scott Carlson, along with Sophomores Sandy Dewing and Sam
Anastasi.

Ice Hockey

At the beginning of the 76-77 sea-
son the Duxbury hockey team was
considered a building team and
wasn't regarded as a contender. In
the course of the season they
proved otherwise and now are
nearing a berth in the State tourna-
ment. Leadership was provided by
Terry Heneghan, Dave Hallowell,
and Andy Moss, the three captains.
The loss of the three captains, and
Dana Loring and Tim Costello will
be felt, but underclassmen Kent
Bolster, Dan Gazzola, John Dowd,
Henry Hamels, and Fenton McCall
will maintain Duxbury's fine Hock-
ey history.

Field Hockey

This year saw the Dragon Ladies ascent to
glory. Their 16-2-3 record was the result of the
Senior players combining with the many talent-
ed under-classmen to produce the finest team in
Duxbury's history. Captains Donna Doane, Liz
Hammond, Beth Marconi, and Charlene Woods
displayed the qualities of leadership needed for
the team to go on to victory. In winning the
South Shore League for the first time since 1973,
the field hockey team exhibited the talents of a
championship team and a state contender. For
their excellent performances, 5 players were
awarded spots on the S.S.L. All-Star team.
Repeaters from last year included Charlene
Woods and Liz Hammond, who was elected
captain of the All-Star team. Voted to the team
for the first time were goalie Donna Doane,
fullback Rosemary Oates, and forward Lauren
Tenney. Unfortunately, the end of the season
also brings the loss of 10 seniors: Gail MacCal-
lum, Janet Driscoll, Liz Case, Christine Leonard,
Susie Schaffer, Rosemary Oates, and the 4 cap-
tains. All of these players will certainly be
missed, but next year's team appears to be
promising with such underclassmen as: Lauren
Tenney, Joan Kellar, Ann Cuneen, Patty Sim-
mons, Tina Hurley, Sue Jenkins, Eileen Leonard
and Theresa Grealy. Indeed with all their talent
next year's team will be hard pressed to match
the accomplishments of the '76 team.

Tournament

After last year's first round loss, this year's field
hockey team went into the State Tournament with an
optimistic attitude. Their first game against Somerset
displayed Duxbury's fierce determination as they moved
into the next round with a 1-0 win. Bitter cold accom-
panied the team to Battis Field in Middleboro as the
Dragon Ladies stopped a solid Holliston team 2-1. They
were now in the semi-finals and huge crowds followed
the team to Middleboro for a big game against Dennis-
Yarmouth. A 1-0 overtime win for the girls gave them
their pre-season goal: the Southeastern Massachusetts
finals. This game was against Hingham, a team that
Duxbury tied in pre-season play. Both teams were con-
sidered even but once again a brilliant performance led
to a solid 2-1 victory and the Southeastern Massachu-
setts title. However to the disappointment of all, Dux-
bury's State title hopes came to an end on an overcast
day in Grafton. Playing Frontier Regional High, last
year's state champ, Duxbury came up short 1-0 in a
valiant effort. In coming this far, three people gained
some well-deserved recognition for their performances.
Goalie Donna Doane and halfback Liz Hammond were
named to the All-State team. Also, Coach Brooks was
voted State Coach of the Year. Congratulations for an
outstanding season.

119

Soccer

Top-quality soccer teams have won for themselves and for
Duxbury High honor for over a decade. The 1976 team, however,
surpassed all expectations by winning twelve consecutive contests
on their way to a 12-1-1 season, Duxbury's finest ever. The
leadership of captains Dave Greely, Tim Burdick, and Tom Whalen
inspired the team to consistently outstanding and sometimes heroic
performances. The graduation of the three captains and seniors Bill
Thompson, Dan Kates, Terry Heneghan, Dana Loring, and Bill
Hemenen will make it difficult for next year's team to duplicate this
year's successes. Underclassmen starters Bobby Burdick, Colin
McEvoy, Jeff Chandler, Chuck Greely, and Casey Tonrey have the
skill and desire to continue Duxbury's tradition of winning soccer.

120

Tournament

Duxbury and St. Mary's of Westfield met on Novem-
ber 20, 1976 for the State Division Two Soccer Cham-
pionship. Despite the bitterly cold wind, hundreds of
fans made the trip to Boston University's Nickerson
Field where they saw the finest example of a champion-
ship game. Dana Loring broke the scoreless tie midway
through the second quarter with a well-aimed blast into
the corner of the goal. Less than four minutes later, St.
Mary's tied the score, bringing back the frustrating
memories of 1974's triple-overtime loss to Nauset. But
the day would belong to Duxbury as Colin McEvoy
scored the winning goal in the first minutes of the fourth
quarter for a 2-1 victory. For the skill, dedication, and
spirit they displayed, the victory and the championship
belongs to Coach Cass and every member of his fine
team.

This year's Girls Basketball Team was

The team was coached by Jane Corliss

Pullen and Sheree Heap. Next year
should be a more successful season with

including victories over such outstanding
teams as Weymouth South, Milton, and local
rival Marshfield. This year the three tri-
captains plus seniors Guy LeBlanc, Frank
Hyer and Tad Blackmore all have excellent
chances of going to the state meets in the
spring. Next year's varsity team will begin
