THE PAR

"My desire and intention is to provide in my native town for a higher degree of instruction in the
mathematics, geography, history, languages, and other branches of good learning than the common
school; but not to provide a substitute for such schools so important to be constantly maintained."

This quote is taken from the will of George Partridge, an educator and military and civic leader from
Duxbury in the early 1800's. His will stipulated that $10,000. be left in trust until a proper amount of
interest could be accumulated to erect a building and form a school of higher learning. He left other
instructions as to the administration, the students, and the curriculum.

In 1840, the trustees deemed that enough money had been collected to begin construction. The
building, which was to become Partridge Academy, was completed on December 16, 1844 on the site of
what is now the new town hall.

First classes were held in January of 1845. Out of eighty-two applicants, fifty-two were accepted with
those from Duxbury given priority, as was requested in the will. Students of Partridge Academy studied
such diverse subjects as orthography (spelling), reading, writing, arithmatic, geography, grammer, histo-
ry, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, rhetoric, elocution, surveying, navigation, bookeeping, astronomy,
natural philosophy, anatomy and physiology, geology, botany (study of plants), natural history, composi-
tion, Latin, Greek, and French.

In April of 1874, the town of Duxbury took control of Partridge Academy in an agreement between the
board of trustees and the town's school committee. It remained the town's high school until 1926 when
the high school was moved to what is now the Upper Alden Elementary School.

One year later, Duxbury's first high school yearbook was published. The book was named Partridge in
honor of the Academy and has retained this title to the present day.

he Class of 1985

Some of us have been in Duxbury for the entire
twelve years while others have joined us along the
way. In any case, it is time to say goodbye to our

school and our town.

We have come a long way in our four years at the High
School: from the "worst class ever" to have gone through
the Intermediate School, to one of the best graduating
classes of DHS. We had our Class Day taken away and
listened to endless lectures on "behavior". We lost out on
the experience of open campus and were forced into the
six period day; yet look at us now. In academics, sports,
arts, and student participation, we are unrivaled. We sur-
vived video games, Duxbury Beach, Star Wars, Ronald
Reagan, Proposition 2 ¥z, and Michael Mania. We have
seen the coming of the Space Shuttle, computers, rock
videos, VCR's, Bloom County, and Trivial Pursuit. We
missed out on Health classes, weathered a bomb scare,
and have been known for our fabulous cheer responses:
"Sixth grade, are you with us? . . . SILENCE." It has been a
long haul, but we have come through with flying colors. So
here we are . . .

As much as the class of '85 likes to think there are
no one else but seniors, certain beings have
been noticed around the school. After consult-
ing the guide book, they have been identified as
freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. But seriously, under-
classmen make up three-fourths of our school and con-
tribute to the school as a whole with their enthusiasm and
spirit. These years provide the time needed to mature
physically, emotionally, and academically. They allow a
person to develop into the well-rounded person that is a
senior. The kids who will be seniors, they are the . . .

hours each day. Monday through Friday,
week after week. Inside of school we are
strictly regulated, but after ten of two each

day we are let loose to do whatever we please. Student life
embodies everything inside and outside of the classroom,
from sitting in classes to seeing friends in the hall, or even
participating in activities after school. In our school there
is something for everyone including student government,
fine arts, business, even our own newspaper. There are
classes ranging from college level to gym. Student life can
go from the very formal, the Prom, to the wild, Homecom-
ing. All of the activities would be nothing, however, without
the people. Our individuality is what makes the school
what it is. But all in all, it's a . . .

This year's homecoming turned out
to be more than expected. Each class
put a great deal of work into this event
producing posters, costumes, skits,

and floats. Homecoming began with an
in-school rally followed by an afternoon
of covering the gym walls with posters.
The pep rally that night was an impres-

sive show of school spirit with enough
confetti to cover the entire floor of the
gym and a surprise balloon-can drop by
the senior class. The seniors came
dressed as nuns and priests, and when
the music of "Let's Go Crazy" was
heard the members of the clergy were
instantly transformed into people
dressed as wildly as possible.

The parade the next morning was
bedlam. A guest appearance by the
Floatbusters started the chaos and in
an overwhelming demonstration of the
excitement of the weekend the rest of
the school soon followed suit. Unfortu-
nately the football team lost tha game
to Scituate, but the dance later that
night was a success and surprisingly

The band jams.

The senior class won the Battle of
Homecoming 1984. In the future,
homecoming will be drastically differ-
ent. The entire event will be recon-
structed. Even though it will not be the
same in the future, the spirit of the

The Impossible Dream?

81 /Student Life

In keeping with nationwide political activities,
DHS held a mock presidential election this fall. It
was initiated by Mr. Meier and was co-sponsored
by the Student Council and the Student Advisory
Council. Becky Mowbray and Amy Bayer coordi-
nated the event with the help of the faculty and
the administration, especially Mr. Buechler, Dr.
Hill, and Dr. Heitzman. Duxbury was one of the
many high schools across the nation that partici-
pated in Election '84 simulations. Most people
would tend to agree that DHS has not been politi-
cally active in the past, and the faculty was par-
ticularly concerned with the seniors of voting age.
The basic objective of the entire process was to
increase political involvement and knowledge of
our elective system by imitating it.

Although it go off to rather shaky start, the
program was considered a great success. Stu-
dent Council and Advisory Council members
spoke to English classes to explain the event and
to select interested candidates. The two political
parties were chosen, composed mostly of sen-
iors, and they planned their strategies. Over the
next few weeks, the two groups publicized their
political opinions through posters, informational
flyers, and speeches over the morning announce-
ments. The highlight of the campaign was the
debate, which was held the day before the actual
election. Christine Hill and John Hughes played
the Mondale-Ferraro duo. while David Kiklis and
Glenn Bruce represented the Republican ticket.
The new superintendent. Dr. Kennedy, acted as
the moderator, while Mr. Bristol, Mr. Chamber-
lain, and Mr. Doherty balanced the political spec-
trum in the questioning panel. The debaters bat-
tled over hot issues like education, the health of
the candidates, abortion, Grenada, and the defi-
cit, then gave closing statements. Although many
students felt that the Democrats were the vic-
tors, it is unclear who actually won the debate.
The following day, the party workers ran the polls
quite efficiently while Al Dziewit kept track of the
number of people who voted per grade. The re-
sults of our school election paralleled national re-
sults: at DHS, Mr. Reagan was put back in office
with two-thirds of the vote.

Prom 198

The Prom, a night of gran-
deur and romance, of formal
dress and dancing, is an exper-
ience that is not soon forgot-
ten. Christos II in Brockton is
the place where the magic hap-
pened, but it was far from spon-
taneous. Meetings were held as
far back as the spring of 1983,
and the prom committee,
headed by Wendy Barker, put in

many long hours. When the big
night came and everyone was
looking their best, the Queen,
Catina Themistokleus, and her
court, Kelly Gifford and Lauren
Keaney, best captured the spir-
it of the night. All the hard work
paid off when the Prom theme
came true. There really was
something "In the Air Tonight."
Round 'em up, boys.

The Color Guard was created in 1983 by Ric
Madru to better the DHS marching band. In its
first year it consisted of twelve girls and coor-

Duxbury High School and is a member of a
special guard that has competed in national
competitions. This year the squad has grown
to fourteen adding many freshman. With a
great deal of dedication the squad improved,
made new flags, and after proving themselves
to the Duxbury Music Promoters, received
money with which to make new uniforms. This
year's activities consisted of events such as
parades, football games (both home and
away), and an exhibition at the Town Hall. The
Flag Squad also participated in an annual band
jamboree in Abington. where they placed
fourth, missing third by only a fraction of a
point. This is considerably better than last
year, where they placed last. Right now. the
squad is trying to organize a winter guard, and
next year they hope to increase in number and
to add rifle girls.

Total chaos!

The 1984-85 school year has been a good
one for the Duxbury High School Choir. Kept
busy during the Christmas season, the singers
performed at both of the elementary schools,
the intermediate school, and the high school.
The annual evening Christmas concert was,
according to tradition, highlighted by the fam-
ous "Hallelujah Chorus." in which the choir

was joined by faculty, alumni and friends.

The Christmas Chorale, the group of stu-
dents who take choir everyday, worked twice
as hard to perform a different score at Cord-
age Park in Plymouth, and at Lord & Taylor in
Braintree.

The commendable talent of some of the
members of this year's choir was in evidence
as Lauren Sawyer, Gina Fernandes, and Brit
and Liz Albritton made District and Donna La-

gerstadt made All-Eastern.

Also included in the highlights of the year
were the spring concert, the awards banquet,
singing for graduation, and the annual fun-
draising efforts. The fund raising was ap-
proached from a new angle this year; musi-
cians and their parents sold raffle tickets for a
drawing containing many exciting prizes.

Slithy Toves is a magazine for people in the
school community who like writing. People
who like to write: there are a great deal of us
out there, or is it out here? Students, teach-
ers, principals, it makes no difference to us. It
is also for people who like writing even though
they would never think of touching a typewrit-
er key themselves.

There should be a parallel universe for peo-
ple who like writing. We should have our own
country, our own national anthem. At the least
we should have our own political party.

Right now. though we scarcely know who
we are. What if we get together in a loose sort
of association, have meetings, read our writ-
ing to each other, and eventually publish a
magazine.

I gotta recruit some girls.

The senior class really came together as a
group this year, especially at the many home-
coming meetings in September and October.
We thank everyone for the ideas, support,
dedication, and hard work. It turned out to be
a memorable weekend for all of us. We will
sponsor two dances this year to raise money
for various activities, including two Senior
Nights Out. a Senior Class party, and Gradu-
ation.

As we are all busy making plans for the fu-
ture, the time we spend at DHS with both old
and new friends has taken on new meaning.
This is the last time we will all be together
before going our separate ways. That is. of
course, until we meet for our fifth year re-
union. See you all then!

This year, like all others, was a prosperous
one for the class of 1986. Their fundraising
efforts began early in the summer with a bake-
sale and bottle drive. A few members of the
class also volunteered time to help with the
Fourth of July parade. Fundraising efforts con-
tinued through the year with a carwash. tur-
key raffle, and the incredible Homecoming
and Christmas dances.

Searching for a prom location was not an
easy task because the class wanted some-
thing new and exciting. With Boston locations
ruled out by the administration. Lantanas in
Randolph was the next best thing. With the
hard work of Suzy Dwyer (Prom chairman),
the officers, and the class as a whole, the
prom will be something to look forward to.

This year really brought the class closer to-

Junior and Senior years in DHS with flying col-

It is opening night, everyone is tense — sud-
denly the curtain opens, lights up and the
show begins! When the audience watches a
show they do not realize the large amount of
work that goes into each production. Actors,
technicians, and directors, as well as many
others contribute to each play.

Most of the work done for the Drama Club is
accomplished at Work Night. Once a week the

Membership in the Society is based on a
point system: points are earned for participa-
tion either onstage or backstage. A candidate
receives a single point for his work on any
single production and it requires ten points to
gain admittance.

The Troupe is responsible for teaching oth-
ers about the stage, and for continuing the

entire club meets on a schoolnight in the the-
atre to do everything from building sets and
hanging lights to sweeping and cleaning the
stage. Work Night is a chance to learn about
the stage and for people to get together with
friends and music to simply do work.

The Drama Club puts on ten shows a year
including: a musical, a three act. a competi-
tion play, the Senior Class play, and six one-

Political
Action Union

The goals of the Political Action Union are to
objectively inform young people at Duxbury
High School about important issues facing our
country, to understand the scope of newly
ratified laws and to get a better comprehen-
sion of our political system. As a Union we
evaluate national concerns, elaborate on
them and compare each party's view. Stu-
dents and members are able to voice their
opinions and their concerns.

The Political Action Union not only serves as
a communication link between the student
body and the political world, but it also gives
students a possibility to prepare for future ca-
reers in politics. Both Republicans and Demo-
crats work independently and cooperatively
to attain certain goals. In this manner stu-
dents are able to see issues in two perspec-
tives with a better understanding of each posi-
tion.

Above all, Students and members increase
their political awareness and will be better
prepared for the next presidential election,
and other State elections. Through the Union
students have come to know how political de-
cisions effect us and how one can become
involved.

in the team's success.

Archibald, Callander, and Mahoney represent-
ed the team in the South Shore Individual Tourna-
ment — finishing first, third, and fifth, respective-
ly. The same three took part in the State Individ-
ual competition — with Archibald qualifying for
the second round of play.

With five of his six golfers returning, Coach
Hayes can be thinking of only even more success-
ful year in 1985.

The Softball team had a good season this year
with a few returning varsity players, but it was
mainly a rebuilding year for them. Coach Shea
was pleased with the team's efforts and will be
looking forward to another good season.

This year's female tennis team had another
great season. They won the South Shore
League with some strong players. Stacey
Murgo, Kathy Brooks, and Julie Cunneen
played the first three singles respectively,
while Julie Doscher and Wendy Barker,
Breena Welch and Susan Murgo were the first
and second doubles teams. The Dragons
made it to the tournament, but lost to Bishop
Feehan in the quarter-finals. Wendy Barker
and Julie Doscher made the South Shore
League All-Star team with an undefeated re-

The Girl's Track Team did fairly well in the
spring, finishing with a 6-2-0 record, losing
only to their old rivals,' Holbrook and Norwell.
The team spent the beginning of the season
adjusting to a coach offering new perspectives
and possibilities — Peter Weyand. Captains
Sue Maddon, Linda Barrow, Jenny Smith, and
Jessie Brown helped to psych the team to a
fairly successful season. The Team was a
young one, so many of the girls will be back
this spring to try to regain the South Shore
League title.

The Duxbury High School Girls

successful season although the girls
were unable to defeat their old rivals,
Whitman-Hanson. Quad-Captains
Becky Mowbray. Denine Allisop,
Elaine Coughlan, and Tammy Toselli
provided strong leadership for an ex-
ceptionally large team. Many run-
ners represented Duxbury in extra
races like the Bonnie Bell 10K and
the Monster Dash in Boston. Al-
though the team was plagued with
injuries, they were praised for their
spirit and hard work. This year's
group of runners was very young, so

even better season next year.

The 1984 Boys Cross Country team,
under the fine coaching of Reggie
Clark, had a very productive season.
This year, many new names were
added to the list of long distance run-
ners. Jerry Haley and Dave Rhoads,
two new faces, became the number
four and five runners respectively.
Continued excellence was displayed
by juniors Ted Dixon, Mark Ryan and
Phil Noyes. Mike Harman and Sean
Mitchem, two hard working sopho-
mores also enjoyed a successful sea-
son. A memorable meet was against
Cohassett. Duxbury won 15-50. Our
team gained the first thirteen spots
before any of Cohassett's men were
to cross the finish line. Other memo-
rable meets were Scituate: 15-45,
Hanover: 21-35, Rockland: 23-32
and the very close Whitman-Hanson
meet: 27-28. Several seniors will be
missing from next year's team,
among them: John Burke, Paul Ke-
hoe, John Walsh, Mike Case, Kirk
Tassell, Greg Hopfe, Brian Melville,
and Ted Sjostedt. Yet there are
many up and coming underclassmen
runners, and their talents combined
with Mark, Ted and Phil, there should
be no problems next year.

The Dragons completed their third
straight winning season by finishing
with a 6-4 record. This year's team
was in the midst of very stiff competi-
tion in the South Shore League's
large school division. Early in the sea-
son, the Dragons were named num-
ber one in Division IV's Superbowl
Poll, after getting off to a good start
with three wins, no losses. In mid-
season, the Dragons lost two games,
each by one point. The tri-captains of
this year's team were Wade Calen-
dar, Alex George, and Steven Has-
senfus. Duxbury had four players
elected to the five spots on the
South  Shore  "All  League  Team";
Chris Crandell and Steven Hassnefus
on the offensive line, Wade Callendar
on the offensive backfield, and Sean
Satkus and Steven Hassenfus on the
defensive line.

Next year's team promises to keep
the winning seasons coming. Cap-
tains for next year are: Scott Kane,
Brian Powers, and Sean Roberts.

1984, the season that the Duxbury High
School Boys Soccer Team was supposed to be
most vulnerable. But with the remarkable
coaching of Foster Cass, the winning attitude,
toughness and hustle of the team, and the
outstanding play, especially by seniors who
had seen little or no action previously, the
Green Dragons successfully defended their
state championship title. The phrase that was
most heard in conjunction with the dragons
this year was "goal — Stephen Cass", as the
senior center forward set the state career
goals record with 159. Tri-captain Cass
(named all-everything), Tri-captain Dan Ma-
honey (Patriot Leader and Sports Focus), Pe-
ter McEvoy (All New England, All-Mass., and a
first year varsity player) were league all stars,
and led the way with Mark Binney. Stephen
Wilson, Tom Kennedy, and Doug Fultz, on the
offensive attack. The little recognized, and
less written about, but awesome defense was
anchored by Tri-captain John Hauber, with
Ralph Thibideau, Mike Barrett, E.J. Durgin,
Mark Schofield, and Matt Schortman, all play-
ing well throughout the year. Chris Ochera
and Scott Zoltowski, the goalkeepers, turned
in many stalwart performances, especially in
the state tournament. And we must not forget
the all around player-manager-trainer Ron
"Chet" Scarborough. The season record of
22-0. with 115 goals for and 1 2 goals against,
lengthened the Dragons winning streak of 70
games without a loss or tie.

The Duxbury High School Girls'
Soccer team, led by captains
Heather Hardy, Beth Shoulla. and
Christine Carroll, posted a 15-3-3
season record in 1984. Critics had
predicted that 1984 would be a re-
building year, but the young dragon
Ladies proved them wrong. The
team finished with second place in
the South Shore League. They also
went on to the Semi-Finals of the
State Tournament, and lost to the
eventual champions in four overtime
periods. Seniors on the team were
Colleen Gillespie, Kim Schippers,
Cindy Partridge, and Jen Davis. Next
season promises to be a very suc-
cessful one. and the State Cham-
pionship is once again in sight. Other
members of the team were: Kelly
Foster. Kelly Leary. Christy Olsen,
Suzanne Landers, Trish Hannan,
Nina Piaseckyj. Bon-Bon Bonner. An-
nie Hannan. Irene Knoblock, Erin
Horgan, Marianne Wilson. Joanie
Zych, and Debbie Binney. Players
making All-Star teams were C. Car-
roll. N. Piaseckyj. C. Bonner, and H.

The 1984-85 swim team was off to a slow
start. This year's captains were senior Wendy
Barker and junior Chris Ciccarelli. The team
graduated many swimmers last year and
therefore we are building, but we have high
hopes for the years to come. Some strong
swimmers are Peter Ciccarelli. David Ham-
mell. Ken Dumphy, Julie Deloid, Jennifer Cic-
carelli and Lauren Holden.

The 1984-85 Boys Basketball team, under
the direction of 2nd year coach Reggie Clark,
has enjoyed a fairly successful season thus
far At this time, the team has an 8-6 record
and is still vying for a spot in the state tourna-
ment. Wins over Division I powers Silver Lake,
and Plymouth-Carver enables the Green Drag-
ons to win the Mayflower Classic Christmas
Tournament in Plymouth. Senior Co-Captain
Michael Barrett has led the team in scoring so
far along with Junior center Chris Perkins. Ju-
nior Co-Captam Mark Ryan has played excel-
lent defense along with his scoring contribu-
tions. Senior point guard Steve Wilson has
done a commendable job controlling the of-
fense while Senior John Walsh has been espe-
cially valuable as a rebounder. With a good
nucleus of juniors and sophomores coming
back, the future of the team looks good for the
next couple of years. The exciting, high scor-
ing games have made this an enjoyable sea-
son for coaches, Mr. Clark and Mr. Dunn, the
players, and the fans.

The Duxbury High School Hockey team has
faced a great loss this season in graduating
many seniors last year. With only two wins and
two ties thus far in the season, the hockey
team is looking for some more solid wins. One
exciting win they did have, however was the 8-
7 victory over Sandwich. Another critical
problem is the many injuries that the players
had. The leading scorer on the team is junior
Scott Barker who plays center on the line with
Tom Kennedy and Lloyd Archibald. Other out-
standing players are Greg Cheetham. John
Hauber. Mike Lucier. and Doug Fultz. The fol-
lowing season should be very promising be-
cause the team will only be graduating a few
seniors.

Now that more people are aware of the ins
and outs of gymnastics after the 1984 Olym-
pics, the DHS varsity gymnastic team has ex-
perienced a greater number of spectators this
season.

The team is really on a roll this year: every-
one is working hard and it shows in their per-
formances. Breaking team and personal re-
cords meet after meet, the team now stands
with a winning record, with 113.65 as the high-
est total score. Tri-captains Teri Kilduff. Juli-
ana Hatfield, and Gwenn Merry, and coaches
Bill Thomas and Linday Crowley expect more
records broken before the season comes to
an end.

A winning season is not always common for
the Duxbury girl's basketball team, but this
year they have had a great record: For part of
the season the girls were in first place in the
South Shore League. They also had many in-
juries, but despite these they were victorious.
The team is very young this year and will be
graduating just a few seniors, so the years to
come should be even better. Captains Aileen
Rand and Colleen Gillespie have led the team
very strongly along with other senior Cathy
Cattell. Juniors Christy Olsen. Kelly Leary. Tri-
cia Hannan, Susie Haffey. and Signe Jensen
have also played important roles in the suc-
cess of this team.

here will be much to remember from our high
m ~M school years, but the memories of our teachers

will stand out. They are much more than teach-
^^h^ ers; they are coaches, advisors, friends. We

have learned from them both inside and outside
of the classroom, and they have made us work hard. Our
teachers are both friends and foes, but where would we be
without them? We take this opportunity to express our
heartfelt thanks to these people who have contributed so
much to our lives. Thank you . . .

In this year of changing faces, an
important one has remained con-
stant. Dr. John Hill has been the Prin-
cipal of D.H.S. for seventeen years.
In those years, he has seen many of
us grow from the first grade.

When Dr. Hill first came to D.H.S.,
the total enrollment was less than
500 students, which has since more
than doubled. Student involvement

Welcome, Dr. Richard Marcoux!

Dr. Marcoux, our new assistant
principal, comes to DHS after years
of being housemaster at Taunton
High School. He is an experienced
administrator, but we feel that we
should give him some helpful hints
on some of the peculiarities at DHS:

1. Don't mix up Day 1 and Day 2.

2. Don't be late for gym

has also increased tremendously
during his time as Principal. At Dux-
bury, we excel in academics, sports,
theatre, and music. "Duxbury has
been on a productive high for the
past few years," says Dr. Hill.

To all of us, Dr. Hill has been a fa-
ther figure during high school. Thank
you, Dr. Hill, for your years of leader-
ship and your interest in us.

3. Don't wear your good clothes
to Homecoming.

4. Don't trust A. P. Chemistry
students.

But, seriously, we hope Dr. Mar-
coux has a long and successful ca-
reer at Duxbury High School and that
this first year of transition runs
smoothly.

This year, we would like to extend
our fondest welcome to our new Su-
perintendent. Dr. Donald Kennedy.
Dr. Kennedy hails from Weston Mas-
sachusetts, where he was the Assis-
tant Superintendent of Schools. The
student body and the faculty hope
that he will bring renewed vitality and
leadership to the position of Superin-
tendent. Welcome. Dr. Kennedy,
may your stay in Duxbury be long
and happy.

One of the hidden administrators
of our school is Dr. Henry Zabierak.
the Director of Curriculum and As-
sessment. Not many pepole are
aware of the work that goes into the
shaping of the school curriculum. Dr.
Zabierak is responsible for the many
different courses available ranging
from the A. P. program to studyhall.
He has enabled students to tailor
their schedules to suit themselves.
We would like to thank him for his
hard work in making the high school
a better place to learn.

Remember the days of youth.

The days when we were shy.

And so very much free.

Full of laughter.

Curiosity.

And confusion.

Confusion about growing up.

We had so much to learn then,

So much to see.

Remember the days of youth.

The days we were friends.

And you

So very much alive.

Mr. Saggese has been working in the Dux-
bury school system for thirteen years. Al-
though he has been in the High School for only
three years, his efforts to help students and
faculty have been commendable. He gained
his position as Head of the Math department
through his superb background: yet, his per-
sonality and quick wit deserve even more rec-
ognition. To an exceptional teacher, coach,
and friend, the Class of 1985 dedicates this
edition of the Partridge

The Yearbook Staff meets every
Wednesday afternoon in English 10.
The staff often works late into the night
in order to reach the ever-approaching
deadlines. Aside from the constant flow
and exchange of ideas, staff members
are always busy drawing up layouts,
completing typesheets, writing copy,

and selecting photos.

This year Duxbury hosted a regional
yearbook workshop sponsored by Herff
Jones, our publisher. This proved to be
a valuable experience for all who par-
ticipated and to the outcome. PAR-
