Best wishes and good luck to the Class of 1987. Your
teachers, coaches, counselors, and advisors have
done their best to help you gain knowledge and skills
. . . and to encourage you when you were discour-
aged. Yet all of your triumphs, in academics and
sports, pale before the questions: What sort of per-
son do I want to be? . . . How will I treat others?
Come back to visit us; we will miss you!

Dr. Donald G. Kennedy
Superintendent

Dr. Richard Marcoux
Director of Business

Dr. Claryce Evans
Director of Curriculum

Best Wishes to the Class of 1987. I have enjoyed
working with you for the past four years. You have
been pleasant and friendly and have produced
excellent results in many areas. Your scholastic
record as a class is strong, and in music, athletics
and drama you have made the faculty and your
parents proud of you.

Dr. John Hill

To laugh often and love much, to win the respect
of intelligent people and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and en-
dure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate
beauty, to find the best in others, to give of one-
self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a
healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed so-
cial condition; to have played and laughed with
enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know
even one life has breathed easier: this is to have
succeeded.

Mr. Edwin Greene has been teaching in Duxbury longer than any
other faculty member, and his contributions have been numerous. Mr.
Greene built the funnel for the prom, prints Drama tickets, programs,
progress reports, prom posters, and newsletters. He repairs hockey
sticks, furniture, and all the other little things that someone has to do.
Mr. Greene is that someone who is constantly, on his own time, doing
things for the students and faculty.

When asked to build the playhouse for the daycare center this year,
he was more than willing to do it, because he knew the children would
love to have it. On top of all his extra contributions such as these, he
even finds time to watch some Duxbury High School sports.

What impresses students the most about Mr. Greene is that with all
he does for the school, he never asks for anything in return, and he
receives little or no recognition at all. In many aspects, he is like the
unsung hero of DHS. He is always there in a crisis when something needs
to be made or fixed. He has been a teacher at DHS now for 28 years,
and the list of his contributions and accomplishments are incredible. He
is an important part of our school and he is appreciated.

Thank you Mr. Greene

A student who walks into an English classroom can expect the usual
course of grammar, poetry, and composition. But if this student is lucky
enough to have walked into English 7, he will soon realize that this class
is different. Not only will be receive an English lesson, but a lesson in
philosophy as well. This class is the work of the Aristotle of DHS, Mrs. Caro
Peterson. Mrs. Peterson does not teach philosophy, but talks to her
students about life. What she says is really meaningful and everyone
can learn from it.

In order to understand the frustration kids go through when trying to
learn something new Mrs. Peterson believes that all teachers should but
themselves into a position similar to their students'. Teachers should
take up something new and find out how hard it is at first. She took up
pottery and learned that it is very difficult at first but that it does get
easier and better.

Having taught for twenty years, she began teaching in the elemen-
tary schools of Connecticut and Vermont. She than taught second
grade in Duxbury for two years before moving up to the High School
where she has been for eight years. All of these experiences, as well as
bringing up a family of her own has helped her gain a knowledge and
understanding of kids, which shows in her work today.

Sondra Upham has taught for fifteen years at DHS. Fifteen years in
one place is a long time for Mrs. Upham, since she has spent most of her
life travelling around the world.

Mrs. Upham's premiere teaching job was in Denver, Colorado. She
eventually ended up here in Duxbury after marrying a man from the
"east" (Boston to be exact). Years later, she attended Harvard for
some classes on fiction and writing.

Mrs. Upham learned an important lesson at Harvard: when offering
her writing to the other students in her class, she was reminded of how
frightening it can be for high school students to share their papers with
both teachers and other students. She also believes that teaching is
one of the greatest professions, as it gives the opportunity to be as
creative as she wants. Even though each day she has a lesson plan,
Mrs. Upham feels that she has a freedom to be creative with her
students, which she would not have with a 9-5 desk job. To her, teach-
ing is the most challenging of jobs; every year she has to "top what she
did last year."

Why does she try so hard? Simple. If she can touch even one person,
and perhaps influence him through her teaching, the effort has been
worthwhile.

After some tough losses to Scituate and
Rockland in the beginning of the season, the
boy's soccer team made steady improve-
ments. When coach Cass got the team or-
ganized, the Dragon's went to work. Their
dedication showed through as they were
able to end off the season 9-0-2 and finish
third in the league.

Entering the tourney 13-3-3, the only peo-
ple who believed the team could go far
were the Dragons themselves. After demol-
ishing Dartmouth 9-1, they surprised an over-
confident Foxboro team with skill and hustle,
winning 4-2. Few will forget Doscher's goal
on a direct kick. Dedham was defeated in a
close, cold, hard-fought game, 2-1, ad-
vancing the Dragon's to the South Sectional
finals. For the third time, Duxbury faced
Rockland, and this time they came away
victorious 2-0. The season ended at WPI,
where they lost to Winchester, after playing
even with them for most of the game.

The DHS Girls Soccer team, playing Division 1 for
the first time, responded with a 15- 1 -2 overall record
to capture the South Shore League Championship.
Led by co-captains Annie Hannon, Irene Knoblock
and Erin Horgan, the team rallied from behind and
snatched the league title from season-long frontrun-
ner Abington. The girls were seeded third in the E
Mass Tournament, where they faced Walpole in the
quarterfinals. They fell behind 2-0, then rallied back
to tie with two clutch goals by Nina Piaseckyj, but
they were finally laid to rest in OT, losing 3-2.

The Dragons will lose eight seniors this year, cap-
tains Hannon, Knoblock and Horgan, as well as SSL
All-Stars Charlene Bonner and Meg Oates and start-
ers Piaseckyj, Blake Munro and Donna Worobel. But
Coach Pat Shea will be able to build on a strong
cleus of underclassmen, SSL All-Star Erin Brozman,
leading scorer Tara Horgan, goalie Jodie Andrews
and Marianne Wilson, Joanie Zych, Debbie Binney,
Ellen Welles, Holly Macleod and Kere Eddy. So be-

After losing three powerful seniors, even coach Reggie
Clark had his doubts about the boys' 1986 season. Led by
captains Jerry Haley, Mark O'Donoghue, and Sean Mitchem,
the team compiled its first undefeated season in nine years.
Cap'n Haley was the consistant top gun, and an unusual
performance by sophomore, Ben Riordan, captured the
South Shore league-meet for Duxbury. Harmon, Riordan,
and Haley alone did not give this team a 10-0 record. Cap-
tains O'Donoghue and Mitchem, juniors Greg Coughlin and
Eric Schippers and two pleasant surprise newcomers senior
Mark Leonard and sophomore Glen Rand, led a thick pack
unparalelled by any in the South Shore League. Next year
the team plans to continue its tradition of excellence behind
Coughlin, Schippers, Rand, Riordan, the rest of the tough
Duxbury pack and bring home yet another SSL title.

91

T' don't know which way to go! I think that guy is staring at me.

92

team bid farewell to their super-runner Lisa Klein, and there were doubts
whether or not the girls would again be champs. However, these doubts
were soon put to rest when Virginia Kerrigan began her career at DHS. In
1983 Virginia, a Freshman, was #3 on the team and helped lead the Drag-
ons to an 8-2 record, not bad for a rebuilding season! In '84, the Sophomore
won her first varsity race (a rare accomplishment for a sophomore) and, #3
again, helped carry the Dragons to a 9-1 record and runner ups in the 1984
Divisional Meet.

During Virginia's junior and senior years, she helped lead Duxbury to 2 SSL
Championships, finished 12th in '85 and 9th in '86 in the All-League meet and
leaves the team currently undefeated in 18 straight dual meets. In her 4
years at DHS, Virginia was a constant top 5 placer and carried the team to
an incredible 35-3 record. Also, her 17:44 personal record on the home
course stands as one of the best ever! Virginia will undoubtably be missed.

93

Play much?

Go get 'em, Alison.

"Strrrrech!'

Andrea stands ready.

It is hard to believe that this was a "rebuilding year" for field hockey, according to
coach Pete Sagessee, who was very proud of the team. The season was exciting and
full of spirit, as the girls put all they had into it and consequently were quite successful.
With Kristin Wolfe and captains Kilduff , Chrusz, and Greely as the only returning starters,
the Dragons knew they had their work cut out for them. They were up for the chal-
lenge. Showing real depth, many girls had to fulfill big responsibilities, and they all
produced. Thanks to big performances by seniors Kim Burr and Betsy Archibald, juniors
Andrea Puliot, Sarah Brown, and Lesley Hacker, Duxbury was able to outplay and
outshoot all their opponents. Ending up with a 10-5-4 record, the team qualified for the
tournament for the twelth consecutive year.

Their post season play showed real class. In the Preliminary round of the tourney,
Duxbury battled Nantucket for about half the day. After a 1-1 score and three over-
times, two stroke-offs in the dark unfortunately declared Nantucket the winner. Also in
post season, Sue, Vicki, Denise, Andrea, and Kristen made the all-star team and did
Duxbury proud. The whole team had a great season and a lot of fun in this "rebuilding
year". Nice work girls.

Easy on the threads, guys.

We do . . .

Through dedication and blazing
speed, Paul DiPersio added a spe-
cial edge to Duxbury football. In
pressure situations, coach Del-
lorco would rely on him. Watching
Paul practice one can tell he
gave his all to the team. Even
after the fall workouts, he would
train hard during track to increase
his speed. It all paid off. Once on a
kick return, Paul blew by the other
team for a ninety yard touch-
down run.

On both offense and defense,
Paul was able to contribute to the
team. In the '86 season he scored
eight TD's including two in the
Randolph game. Playing flanker
and sometimes running back, Paul
totalled thirty receptions for 457
yards and averaged 7.9 yards on
his fifteen carries. On special
teams, Paul made ten returns for
209 yards. When a big perfor-
mance was needed, Paul came
through like in Hanover and Midd-
leboro where he had 100+ yard
games. Paul played a great safe-
ty as well. Third on the team in
tackles with 49, Paul also made
two interceptions for the Drag-
ons. With trememdous athletic
ability, Paul DiPersio gave freely of
his talent for Duxbury football.

With a new look and changed at-
titude, our fall cheerleaders jumped
into action. After years of wearing
skirts in sub-freezing weather, the
girls were finally issued new uniforms.
Initially mistaken for wrestling uni-
forms, the outfits were distinguished
with racy stretch pants and cute
green saddle shoes. The new duds
were especially appreciated by
seniors Christine, Marcie, Jen, Eve-
lina, co-captains Andrea and Julie,
and captain Pam DiNicola.

A more professional look reguired
a more professional program. To fit
the bill, a new coach, Business
teacher Mrs. Henrigues was as-
signed. The cheerleaders had to ad-
just to a more rigorous workout in-
cluding practice every day. It paid
off, though, as they made stunning
performances at all the football and
soccer games, always ready with a
jump or a yell. Our cheerleaders real-
ly did a spectacular job this season
with dedication and hard work.

How're you doin', Andrea?

Whoosh! There goes Paul again.

How do you play this game?

98

99

Alright, it's gone. Don't smother me

Steve from his spot

The quality of this year's hoop team was epito-
mized Py the Rockland game, January 8. They come
on the court with cool dispositions, psyching out the
other team. Ignoring the issue of Ricky Witt, they
proceed to dazzle Rockland with hustle, skill, and a
lot of team spirit. At center, Miele tears down an
offensive rePound and makes it good for two, as hi-
fives fly. After taunting Harden a bit, McPherson
lunges for a steal and dishes to Doscher who pene-
trates, gives Mike a bounce pass through Rockland's
legs and Mike puts it home. On the full court press,
Romine anticipates, making the steal. Soon after,
while dribbling outside, Barrett hits Coughlin with a
pinpoint pass in the lane.

Despite the closeness of the game, our men stay
calm and support each other. Throughout the sec-
ond half, Steve constantly connects from the cor-
ner, as McWilliam and Doscher continue to do their
damage. Matt drives baseline . . . through a forest of
blue . . . reverse lay up . . . banks it in. The crowd (and
Rockland) are breathless. Since they lacked a su-
perstar, Duxbury Hoop banded together as an un-
deniable force.

Thanks Kevin, I'll take the puck

Since he was a sophomore for the Dragons, Barry Mclssac has been
breaking up 2 on 1's and leaving hits on the opponents. He was voted
the captain by his teammates, who admire him for his tough, aggres-
sive play on the ice. Barry has been skating as long as he's been
walking, which explains his incredible balance when he's on the ice.
Barry wants to play hockey in college, and with these characteristics,
he is sure to be a force there also. To the right is the only sign of Barry on
the ice, as he is so fast.

We've been fasting too long,
Budge.

Although our wrestlers really felt the loss of Teddy Gege, they
propped themselves up for some good victories. John Wait
and Andrew Showstead led the weight classes while other
seniors Rob O'Shes, Hans Prosl, Frank Rizzo, Jackie Burton, Steve
Napellio, and Nate McKelvey contributed their hard work for
the team. Jackie fought side by side with Pete Lusko and Nate
Pateneude, top wrestlers of their weight classes. Representing
the Freshman was Hutton, who showed some good talent. By
banding together as a closely knit team, they overcame some
tough opponents, especially in mid-season, boosting their re-
cord. This year's team showed a lot of heart through their hard
work and dedication.

Sure you don't need a replacement, Davin?

Hungry, aren't we?

The Duxbury High School (coed) swim team was led by
Coach Paul Miles and Senior Captains Peter Ciccarelli and
Laurie Johnson. The team had a big disappointment at
the beginning of the season because of the new MIAA
ruling that coed teams could not compete in Sectional or
State Championship meets. Regardless, the team did
really well in their meets especially ugainst league rivals,
Seekonk, and were very proud. Top swimmers were Peter
Ciccarelli (freestyle, backstroke), Bethany Haller (flyer),
Dave Hammell (50 & 100yd free sprinter, Laurie Johnson
(50 & 100 sprint), John Grandy and Amanda Ferry (both
all-around). Other strong members were Amy Capraro,
Jim Gregg, Ryan Tilson and Rosemary Tifankjian, and
divers Brian Case, Andrea Lowe, Katie Frazier, and Chris
Way.

Senior Debbie MacWalter is one of DHS's finest athletes. Winning 3
trophies, 29 medals and 5 ribbons over just three years of Girls Track is
evidence of Debbie's outstanding abilities.

In her freshman year, Debbie set a new javelin record of 126'3" She
went on to win League Champ for javelin and placed second in the state
pentathalon. By the end of the year, Debbie had achieved 83 points for
her Varsity letter.

In Debbie's sophomore year she set a new javelin record at 131'6". Not
only did Debbie win the Divisional Meet, but also won Bay State Games for
javelin. She came in fifth in the All-State Meet, placed second in the
League Meet and in the State Pentathalon came in twelfth.

These achievements weren't enough! Debbie set a new high jump
record at 5'3", competed on the Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic Track
Team and in the Junior Olympics, held in Iowa, where she placed second.

In her junior year, Debbie showed that not only could she throw javelin
(setting another new record at 132'6"), but she could also throw Shot Put,
High Jump and run Low-Hurdles. She set a new Shot Put record at 36'8"
and she set a new 330 Low-Hurdles record at 50.1 seconds.

Pepin in motion

Pitch it in there!

Derek Pepin began playing baseball when he was only seven. Miami,
Florida was his home at the time and in the four years he lived there, pitcher
Derek, was able to lead his Little League team to a championship. His move
to Duxbury in the seventh grade did not go unnoticed, he pitched his Little
League team to the "World Series."

When his freshman year rolled around Derek was recognized for his pitch-
ing on the Junior Varsity team. The next three years would be spent pitching
and hitting for the DHS Varsity team, the American Legion team and one
team in the Babe Ruth League. As a sophomore, Derek was chosen to start
for DHS in the first round of the State Tournament and lost 3-2, but more
importantly he gave up no earned runs.

Derek's junior year was even more impressive as he led the Varsity team in
RBI's, batted .350, and held a 4-1 victory over the team's rival, Rockland.
Derek Pepin was the most significant factor in the team's rigid defense.

And the band played on.

The Duxbery High School Marching Band
lead by director Ric Madru and majorettes
Jennifer Hynek, Jennifer Leedham, and
Paige Holden, had a strong marching season
with the intention of providing the best half
time show at Duxbury home football games.

Duxbury competed at Wakefield and
New Bedford taking the bronze in both com-
petitions, The highlight of the season was the
competition at MICA, where the band was
able to perform for the audience in Sullivan
Stadium.

Welcome to Flyerpiece Theater

The Dragon flyer turned four in 1986-87 and cele-
brated with its most productive year ever! Under the
direction of Editor-in-Chief Stephen Powers, (the back-
bone of the paper) The flyer fulfilled its duty to you, the
student, by keeping you up to date on the issues here
at DHS.

Gretchen Melia and Bill Rhoads news staff discov-
ered what happened to the class gift of 1986 and
reported all the burning stories at DHS. The Editorial
Page of Laura Raftery, Stephanie Anderson and Erin
Leehey (as well as Anthony Pannozzo's cartoons) in-
formed the school of its problems and gave opinions on
how to eliminate them, The Sports and Arts sections
under Nina Piaseckyj, Scott McWilliam, Ed Hill and
Stephanie Sullivan followed every beat of the award
winning music department, drama department and
sports teams. Chantel Dziewit and Laura Harris took
care of advertising while Davin Perkins was our resident
Japanese tourist. But before our heads inflate any
more, we must acknowledge the true key to our suc-
cess, the students wo work for and support the paper.
And of course, our advisors Harry Levine and Bob Web-
ster, who are losing as much hair as sleep to help make
us the best paper possible.

The Duxbury chapter of the National Honor Scoiety was in full bloom in 1986-87. Under the leadership of
president Wendy Francke, VP Ted Gage and hordes of other officers too numerous to mention, the group
tutored students, helped the mentally retarded, worked with the terminally ill and held it's annual Valentine's Day
carnation sale. The sale was, as always, a big success and the NHS would like to thank all of those who purchased
a carnation or two, it was for a good cause. Also the NHS would like to thank Freshman advisor Mrs. Schwaller for

doing an excellent job and good luck
with next year's bunch, you'll need it.

Michael Boyce Hill was born July 29, 1969. For those that knew him he was a fun loving, brown-
eyed boy. He had the typical curiosity of any youngster that often led him into mischief but also
provided him with a lot of fun. He loved the little things all children love such as jumping into piles of
leaves, walking through the fields across from his house, getting his feet wet, playing with his big
red truck, and eating cookies and milk which he usually did after school every day. His favorite
childhood game was cops and robbers in which he was always the robber escaping on his green
"banana seat" bike.

Few of our graduating class got to really know Michael though, because he left us at such a
young age. This cheerful addition to our class of 1987 was taken away from the world at the
tender age of 6. He was accidently struck by a car while flying his kite on March 23, 1976.

To those who knew and loved Michael, the graduating class of 1987 sends our love and
condolences. To those who didn't know Michael, say a prayer for him and the rest of our class,
that we may all remain healthy in the future.
