Wasn t it yesterday
When ive first started school?
'Running around the\play ground,
Laughing and screaming like fools.

And wasn 't it yesterday
When we graduated jrom fifth grade?
We moved on to a Bigger school
Undone of the first steps was made.

Wasn t it yesterday

"When we were in the halls of junior high?

Cjoing to our first dances,

9{ever thinking about sauing goodbye.

And wasn t it yesterday

When our first day of high school came?

'2ep rallies, football games, parties, and

proms,

Some of our lives will never be the same.

And now the time has come,

'The day is finally here.

Although we thought it would never come,

We are leaving our senior year.

And maybe sometime, looking backi
We will all laugh and say;

'J{emember high school, "

It seems like only yesterday. "

Colleen Lawrence

WHY SAY GOOD-BY?

There is no need to say good-by...When we
can say farewell... And, after all, we may be
back. ..In just a little spell. ..Our destination
may be far. ..And yet our hearts may
turn. ..In any case the word "farewell".. .Is
better than "good--by "...Because it binds the
friendly knot. ..That makes a closer tie. ..It
seems to sound a wistful note. ..When part-
ing with a friend... Whereas "good-by" would
draw a line. ..Where everything must
end. ..So why not say farewell today. .Or
whisper au revoir?... Tomorrow we may
want to hear. ..Some footsteps at our door.

An Evening in Paris. ...Our Junior Prom at
last! After two years of anticipation and fun-
draisers, the class of 1991 organized an unforge-
table night full of dancing, French cuisine, and
lots of laughter. The transformation of the
gymnasium into a Paris night scene took long
hours of hard preparation as well as excruti-
ating labor. But all was paid off on the evening
of April 28, 1990, where precious memories
were made. Hopefully, we'll all take heed of our
song theme. ..Forever Young.

WE HAVE THE
SPIRIT!

/ always knew someday looking back^on my tears would make me laugh,
but I never knew looking back_on my laughter would make me cry.

As each year in high school progressed, the nearer we all came to the "senior
stands". These bleachers have come to symbolize superiority. ..and each senior
class relishes it's moment in the spotlight; screaming their hearts out pep rally
night. This is just one of the many memorable events which occurred during
homecoming. The week commenced with hall decorating. Of course, the seniors
had the best hall - decorating it Mardi Gras style. Dress up days during the week
included a wide range of costumes, from 50's to 70's - and much more. The
football game and dance concluded a great week. The class of '9 1 outdid itself this
year, winning most school spirit for the third consecutive year. Our week in the
spotlight was thoroughly enjoyed, and our expectations about being the
MIGHTY SENIORS were fullfilled.

FRIENDSHIP
TIME

There are those happy hours that... "We treasure with a
friend... 'But By the ticking of the clocks-There has to be an
end... 'We zvish those moments could endure. ..forever and a
day. ..Instead of melting into dreams... 'When time has
slipped away... And yet there are the memories... That
somehow never die. ..And constantly we cherish
them... Although they make us sigh... And always we are
hoping for... Another chance to meet. ..'With conversation
and a toast. ..And something good to eat. ..There is no Setter
way to use. ..The leisure time we spend... Then just to share
our pleasant thoughts... 'With some beloved friend.

happiness. ..And friendliness to find... When spring was green, the

'The immensity and complexity of the mammoth
tree towered over me. 'Jrom a distant perspective, the
Copper 'Beech was a wonderfully high fountain of wine-
colored (eaves which reached from a hidden comple\pf roots
in the earth and stretched itself up to the clouds. In its
fantastic heights, dezo glistened where the sun struggled to
place its rays, still blocked by other trees in the early
morning light 1 . Closer still, I went towards the mighty
obelisk noticing the oversized trunks littered with
inscriptions of many lovers past who had been immortally
engraved on its sides. Looking upwards, I could see
branches sprouted every which way in a frayed mass,
perhaps fighting each other for a glimpse of the sum. The
scattered and disjointed branches on and below the shaggy
mane of the tree revealed that it had weathered many a
c Hgrtheaster in its greatness. Standing there, ncict to the
craggy comple?cion of the trunk, I was bewildered and felt
asenseof solitude and tranquility in the safety of its shade.

The Green Dragons had another great season
that was surprising even to Coach Cass. The team
finished the regular season with a 15-0-1 record along
with being the first Atlantic Coast League Champs.
The only tie came against a tough Marshfield team,
that Duxbury later beat at home in the last game of
the season. Duxbury then headed into the South tour-
nament, where they beat Needham, 1-0, and Nauset,
3-0. In the South final, the Dragons wanted to prove
that they were a team to look out for, where they beat
Framingham South 2-1, in 5 overtimes. Off to the
State Semifinals, the Dragons beat unknown Con-
cord-Carlisle, 2-1. With Captains, Joe Foley and
Andy Downin, the Dragons finished the season, 19-1-
1 and put Mark Manganello, Greg Gammons, Andy
Downin and Joe Foley on the all-league team. Look-
ing to next year, co-captains elect Mike Foley and
Greg Gammons will have their hands full keeping up
Duxbury's tradition.

GIRLS
SOCCER

This years Girls Soccer Team had a very successful season
with an overall record of 16-1-1. Captains Leanne Bradley, Nancy
Mclsaac, Shelly McNeil and Kim Fanning led the team to a
victorious year. Nancy Mclsaac and Christine Boulanger both
suffered broken legs throughout the season but helped the team
with tremendous moral support. The girls remained undefeated
throughout the entire season by knocking out Whitman-Hanson in
the race to be the first ever Atlantic Coast Champs! Now that the
season was over the girls prepared for some tourney action. The
first game was played at Duxbury under the newly installed lights
against Notre Dame. The Dragons single handedly advanced with
a victory over ND and would now face Plymouth. This is where
Duxbury met their match as Plymouth won 1-0 in a heartbreaker.
Despite ending the season with a loss, the girls still remained
undefeated in the Atlantic Coast League and had one of the best
seasons ever. Senior members included the two captains, Leanne
Bradley and Nancy Mclsaac, Margot Salmela, Heather Foster,
Missy Doyle, Christine Boulanger, Kristin Nangle, Jenna Vajcovec
and Adrian Gainer, Junior members were Co-captains, Shelley
McNeil and Kim Fanning, Laura Bracco, Melissa Mulligan, Sopho-
more members were Kelly Desmond, Kerri Nangle, Priya Costa,

Competing in a very competitive league which in-
cluded the defending state champion, the DHS boys cross
country team had a successful season. With a one point win
against Marshfield in the next to last regular season meet,
the team clinched a winning season, finishing with a 4-3
record. At the Eastern Mass Division Meet, the team missed
qualifying for the State Meet by just one place (14 points).
Leading the way all season were the sophomore State

This year's season commenced with eighty students trying out during double
sessions. With high hopes and aspirations, the varsity team started out on a good
note, winning its first game. Yet as time wore on, it became apparent that the
team's drive for success would not be fulfilled due to inconsistencies. The season's
highlight was tying Sandwich, the league champions of 1990. This year's co-
captains were Katie Ghiorse and Whitney Orwig. Coach Peter Saggesse and
Assistant Coach Faith Heneghan did an outstanding job this year and both are very
hope for next year's season.

The Marching Band has 7 1 hardworking members led by senior
drum majors Todd Szymczak and Kristen Lagerstedt. The marching band
plays during halftime at the High School football games as well as compet-
ing in marching band competitions. With the help of student teacher. David
Betancourt, the band had one of its best years yet. In the first competition
at Billenca the band received a score of 72 , the best ever for the band in their
first competition of the season. In the second competition at Dennis-
Yarmouth the Band improved by seven points, receiving a 79 and edging out
the Dennis-Yarmouth band, their biggest competition, by a point. The band
competed in the pouring rain in the MICA finals at Boston University and
received a standing ovation as well the coveted silver medal. Congratula-
tions to the Marching Band for a very successful season and one of the best
years yet.

The Color Guard consists of nine girls who accompany the
marching band on the field in competition and during the halftime at the
football games. The Color Guard adds to the overall effect of the band,
making it more colorful with their flags and rifles. They practice every
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The captain of the colorguard is sopho-
more Kristen Brogna and the advisor is Jacqui Anderson. Besides compet-
ing with the band in the fall season they also compete in the winter indoors.
Hopefully, they will recreate last year's winning season.

132 ACTIVITIES

The Teen leaders program is divided into four commit-
tees designed to help guide the students in the Intermediate and
High Schools. One committee, the homeroom resource aides,
help the ninth graders adjust to the High School. For the first
few days in the year they answer questions and help them
adjust to their schedules, in January they give advice on taking
mid-years, and in June they talk to the eighth graders about
what to expect from the High School. The second group goes
through twelve hours of training and then leads class discus-
sions at the Intermediate School dealing with relations, drugs,
alcohol, or whatever is concerning the students. Another
committee is the High School version of the welcoming commit-
tee. The last committee is a group of students who tutor anyone
from the Intermediate or High Schools. The group meets on a
monthly basis. This year there are seventy students involved
and it is open to anyone interested. This year the group
sponsored a fund-raiser to collect presents to give to needy
children. The advisors are Mr. Lord and Ms. Hibbett.

The Prison Issues Project is a five year old
student organization dedicated to studying Americar
prisons. Field trips have been taken to several Mas^
sachusetts correctional facilities, and group members
have discussed a variety of topics with different
speakers. Mrs. Peterson and Mr. Fernandes are tho
group's advisors, and Christine Papajohn is the curi

rent president.

AFS student exchange programs were founded in
1947. The idea came from American Field Service volun-
teer ambulance corps drivers who served during World
War I and World War II. Since then, more than 170,000
students and a like number of host families have formed a
global intercultural community. Recently, AFS became
the first exchange program to receive a a special testimo-
nial from the United Nations Secretary general, Javier
Perez de Cuellar. The award is in recognition of AFS's
leadership in the field of youth programs.

The AFS Club has had yet another successful year.
The AFS Club brought in four new AFSers: Julian Cofield
of Australia, Sakiko Wada of Japan, Angel Torres of Spain
and Elif Kizilkaya of Turkey. Through the year, the club
participated in many activities such as a Christmas party,
ski trip, and a short term exchange to Virginia. The officers
this year were President Jenny Chandler, Vice-President,
Tabitha Kent, Treasurer, Todd Harrington and Secretary,
Sarah Parrino.

ART CLUB

The DHS Art Club officers for this year are: Kristen Brogna and Sarah Ritch
(co-presidents), and Brent Leland (Vice President). The Advisor is Mrs. Freyer-
muth. The Art Club planned some ambitious and exciting projects including: the re-
opening of the DHS Student Gallery, the creation of the new murals for the
corridors, work on Art Works '9 1 , and the beginning of the creation of the permanent
DHS Alumni student art collection. The Art Club has been working specifically on
mural ideas for the Math Hallway, the front of the school, and the walls near the Art
and I. A. area. The creation and display of student art around the school makes the
atmosphere a more special one for students. The club is committed to giving young
artists the opportunity to express themselves and put their talents to a meaningful
use while here at DHS.

(Above) 1990 Student Council members.

This year's Student Councilhas worked hard on several different projects
aimed to improve Duxbury High School. Composed of five elected representatives
from each grade and the presidents of each class, the Student Council meets once
or twice a month to discuss and recommend specific actions for dealing with
problems at the school.

President Chris Hojlo has worked in conjunction with Vice President Josh
Solomon, Recording Secretary Kyle Roberts, Treasurer, John Gouzoules, and I
Publicity Secretary, Brian Herlihy to come up with well thought out agendas for
each meeting. Through the efforts of these officers, much has been accomplished.

After the incidents of this year's Pep Rally a formal letter was drafted by
the Student Council in defense of the traditional activity. Subsequently, a commit-
tee was formed to discuss with the administration what can be done about next
year's Pep Rally.

At both Thanksgiving and Christmas, members worked on making money
to donate to the Council of Churches in town to help out the needy. The funds were
raised through class donations and a bake sale.

In early November, a few members attended the fall Southeastern
Massachusetts Student Councils Convention to learn more about how to make the
role of the Student Council stronger in the school. It was very helpful, according to
the members who went, in learning how other town's student councils are run.

In the spring, the annual Red Cross Blood Drive will be run along with a
few different fund raising activities.

year's yearbook staff. Much work was done over the summer and
during the school year to make the yearbook a success. During
meetings after school and at night Reflections was created, organ-
ized and completed with the help of the two advisors, Mrs. Johnson
and Mrs. Salmela. This year's staff included Whitney Orwig as
Editor-in-Chief, Sarah Ritch and Josh Solomon as Copy Editors,

142 STUDENT LIFE

%rioiukdgt and "Wisdom

I am now finishing my twelfth year of
education in the same public school system. 'With the
exception of one summer program, I know oj no other
way of [earning beyond the system through which I have
worked. ..sometimes with great difficulty... sometimes
with great ease. I have (earned a great deaf through the
last twefve years. I would hardly be ivhere I am today
untliout it.

'But something is missing.

I need to know about the world beyond my
small town. I need to know about other cultures beyond
those among whom I was raised.

In my public 'High School there is little
individuality, most prefer to be a part of the mass. 'There
are, however, a few who stand out and arcn t afraid to
express opinions -without fear oj retribution. I need to
know 'Why these people act the way they do. College
must be made up of these individuals who will speak,
their minds and argue for what they believe. I need
confrontation. ..people to question my beliefs. :\pf many
people have done that j or me yet. I want to be forced to
act decisively. I want to be forced to think_creatively,
not just nwmorizc and regurgitate facts. 'Where else can
I work\side by side with some oj the brightest women
and nun in the world and learn from them-'

'Wisdom £« not gained by staying in the same
provincial place and merely reading about what is out
there. It is gained by personal discovery. One need not
travel very far, but one must change his surroundings,
both people and places, I want a change of surroundings,

I know I -will find this change in college. Isn 't that
what colleges were set up for? -\pt only to educate
people, but also to open people up to new ideas and
concepts, to new races and cultures. I want to take full
advantage oj what the college has that I just can t get in
the place I am now.

'To leave my (earning at the point it is at now
would be a waste of the last twelve years. I finally see
myselj stepping up to real true knowledge and as has
been my nature- once given a small taste oj something I
like. I want more and more of it-
College is waiting to offer me new worlds. I
know I will probably never be Solomon, but I hope to
gain as much wisdom as I can before it is too late.

CONNECTION

Margot and Matt
Pete and Nicole

Throughout our high school years, relationships have beer
formed with many different people. Many students experiencec
their first crush, heartbreak, and love during their years a
Duxbury High. School isn't just about math and science; interac
tion with people is as important if not more so for growth anc
maturity. Life is, after all, about people and about love. Thegrouj
of people you see here are just a few of the many couples formed ove:
the past four years. For those couples not shown, it need no
matter, for love needs not documentation... it lasts forever.
