ON THE MOVE... THROUGH OUR LIVES

Behind us are memories, beside us are friends, before us are dreams that
will never end" -Anonymous

It feels like just yesterday that most of us were walking down the halls of
Chandler School on the first day, amazed at how many faces we were seeing
for the first time. By now, we have developed friendships with each other
that will last forever. As the majority of us have been together for twelve
years, I know that we will never forget these past few.

As we all go our separate ways, most of us will never be together again.
However, we will still see be reminded of our old friends in the faces of every
new person that rushes into our lives. It is not always easy growing up in a
town as small as Duxbury. I know for sure that there are some of us who
will never want to return, and also others who will miss this town like
crazy. Nonetheless, we cannot forget all that this town has given us; how
each day, the experiences have shaped us into the people we are.

On the move: one simple group of words with such a significant meaning.
Throughout high school, we are always on the move. Whether we are on the
field, on the stage, or on the way to class, we are constantly in motion.

Always having to keep up with extremely busy schedules can be very tough,
yet somehow we manage to do it every day. Now, we are on the move into a
new stage of our lives. This is the time when we leave the protection of our
childhood and begin to create our own lives. I know that all of you have a
great future ahead of you. I wish each of you the best of luck as we all go our
separate ways. I will never forget you, class of 2012, I hope you never forget
yourselves.

UNDERCLASSMEN

~ Walt Disney

Well, here we are, and another year has passed. For
freshmen it was just the first, nervous one. For sophomores,
the second. Juniors were already used to high school and
started to get anxious about the college race. Nonetheless,
for everyone there was something special in these 10
months of 201 1-2012. There is still so much to come. So
enjoy life, underclassmen! Make friends, have fun while you
have time! Take as much as you can from these good years
in Duxbury High School.

Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Don't walk behind me; I may not lead.
Just walk beside me and be my friend.

~ Albert Camus

The 2011 Varsity Football Team

FOOTBALL

With the second 13-0 season in a row,
Duxbury Football has set the new state
record for consecutive wins, a very
impressive feat. 26 games, losses. The team
set many records this year. Matt Keefe set
passing records. Don Webber set receiving
records. And Max Randall set tackling
records. But of all the amazing feats this
team accomplished on the field, we would
all agree that our most proud
accomplishment was the Liberty Fund. The
team spent a lot of down time raising
money for the late Lt. Timothy Steele s
daughter, Liberty. Tim Steele died fighting
for our country so that his daughter and his
community could live in a safe nation. This
sacrifice struck the team as a whole, and
they decided to dedicate the season to
Liberty Steele, adopting her name into the
team's motto. The Duxbury Football Team
proudly won each of their games this
season, representing not only our school,
but Tim Steele s sacrifice for his daughter,
Liberty. As a whole, we were able to raise
over S30.000, which all went directly to
Liberty Steele and her mother. This brought
the team closer together. We will never
forget this season and what we
accomplished together, and we will always
live by the motto, Strength, Honor, and

Libert y f -Bobby Boyle

THE LEGACY CONTINUES

FALL
CHEERLEADING

This past fall season, the DHS
cheerleading team had the privilege of
supporting an undefeated football
team by cheering at Gillette Stadium.
The captains Francesca Arana, Lauren
MacDonald, and Kenzie Reale worked
hard to keep the team on track and
focused. Even though the team
underwent many injuries and had to
change their routines several times, it
managed to put on a great
performance at all competitions and
made it to the Regionals at
Dartmouth.

In order to qualify to be on the varsity
team, every girl must try out and
prove to the judges, coaches, and
captains that she has what it takes to
be on the team. All girls trying out
must perform a cheer, dance, and
jump sequence that is taught at a
workshop the week before tryouts. All
must show their tumbling skills as
well.

This year, four freshmen were
welcomed Sarah Adamski, Erin Doolin,
Maryellen Slayter, and Bridget Dixon
onto the varsity team. Each of them
impressed the judges enough to be
selected. There is one sophomore on
the team, Sarah Hansman, who has
been riding solo as the only girl in her
grade for two years, but she has done
an amazingjob.

The nine juniors on the team this year
have contributed many different
aspects to the group. They have
different strong points that make our
team unique.

Overall, the fall cheerleading team did
a great job supporting the football
team and keeping fans rowdy in the
stands They couldn't have done it
without their enthusiastic coaches,
Jen Carley and Dena Dwyer.

BOYS SOCCER

The Boys' Varsity Soccer Team, led by
Captains Brendan North, Ben Schroeder,
and Adam FitzGerald, finished the year
with another successful season and a
record of 11-5-4. The team started slowly,
but then turned things around, ending
the year with an impressive 2-0 win
over Hingham and a 1-0 victory over
Holliston in the first round of the
playoffs.

Heart and mental toughness exhibited
by the seventeen seniors drove the
team. An additional strength was the
ease with which the underclassmen
assimilated into the team. This was
partly a result of the openness of the
seniors, and partly a result of the
demeanor of the nine underclassmen.
Instead of being intimidated by playing
on the varsity team, they were
confident and capable, thus earning
some quality playing time.

4fe

Boys' Varsity Soccer Team

Senior Wilson Powell had an
excellent season this year. His
powerful kick and steadfast
mentality helped to lead the boys'
team to success.

Adam FitzGerald, one of the three
senior captains, proved to be a vital
player on the team. In each game, he
gave everything he had and helped
lead his teammates toward victory.

The team as a whole embraced an idea
introduced by Coach Tocci called the 212°
Mentality. The general premise is that
water is only hot at 211° but at 212°, it
boils. The extra degree leads to
something great. The team embraced
that mentality quickly resulting in their
success.

Senior goalie Justin Marino was a big
asset this year, making dozens of crucial
saves and several shutouts. The defense
was another strong point for the team,
with seniors Jason Marino, Brendan
North, and Ben Schroeder locking it
down in the back. The team also had
stellar productions and distribution
from its center midfielders, junior Max
Cook and senior Adam FitzGerald as well
as juniors Alex Kennelly and Peter
Murphy and seniors Cam Mullins and
Wilson Powell. Lastly, seniors Tim Gavin,
Fenton McCall, and Chase Mohrman led
attack at striker point.

Next year the team will miss the great
leadership that it received from its
seventeen seniors. However, the have
high expectations for yet another
successful year with strong players in
the junior class as well as many
talented underclassmen ready to fill
the open positions, fill the lineup, and
take over the big roles on the team.

VOLLEYBALL

Duxbury High School has a plethora of
sports teams and this year a girls' volleyball
team was added to the list. The volleyball
team was not just a one-year
accomplishment. It really started last year
when Barbara Vetch called Pamela Thomas
and asked if she would be willing to do a
volleyball clinic. When it took place, over
fifty girls showed up. This led to an
intramural high school team. The team
practiced three days a week and had
scrimmages with whatever team was ready
to play them.

This year, however, the volleyball team was
a fully recognized Duxbury High School
sports team. Not only that, but three teams
were formed: a freshman team, a junior
varsity team, and a varsity team. No one was
happier than the players. The varsity team,
led by Coach Pam Thomas, ended the season
with an 11-8-0 record. This was enough to
take the team to championships.

The Duxbury Girls' Varsity Volleyball Team

■iii

Unfortunately, their first championship
game would also be their last. Not to fear,
the volleyball team will only be losing two
players to graduation next year, seniors
Sarah Hunter and Shannon McLaughlin.
There are three talented freshmen that the
team will be able to count on in the years to
come. In addition to the freshmen, the
group has three sophomores and five
juniors. The captains for this year were
Caroline McSherry and Michaela North. It
was due, in part, to their spirit, drive, and
dedication that the other coaches would
look at this varsity team and be amazed
that 2011 was only its first year. All the girls
banded together and cheered for one
another. After only one year together, the
players had become a real team.

Though we will miss our graduating seniors,
the girls volleyball team will come back
stronger than ever next year. And next time,
we'll win the championship!

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

This year, the cross country team
gained a lot of young talent and
hopes to get even faster in the years
to come. Led by senior Jason Angell
and junior Alec Stewart the team
finished ninth at the All League Meet.
Next year, the team loses only two
seniors, Angell and Keelan Murphy.
The future is looking bright,
especially with the addition of
freshmen Tate Allen, Craig Feeney,
and Kevin Rourke. They, along with
strongjuniors Liam MacDonald and
Cam Myette, will make this team a
force to be reckoned with in the
coming years.

The Duxbury Girls' Varsity Field Hockey Team

FIELD
HOCKEY

The Duxbury High School Field Hockey
Team ended its season as League and
South Sectional Champions. Its biggest
accomplishment was beating Walpole.
Since the first day of tryouts the team
had been working toward this
challenge. Although Walpole was their
biggest competition, they played every
game competitively. Beating other
teams helped them work up to
Walpole s defeat. Their success was due
to dedication and support for one
another.

Division 1 South S

The team had a very deep bench and was
able to use everybody for substitution. This
year's field hockey team was the first team
to make it to the South Sectionals and the
first Duxbury field hockey team ever to
make it to the Eastern Mass Finals. They
are very proud of their accomplishments.
The captain and goalie Sophie Fitzpatrick
was the backbone of the team. She had the
least number of goals against her, but as
she has said before, she would be "nothing
without her defense." Then captain and
forward Grace Nissi was out for the
majority of the season with a torn ACL.
Forward and captain Cory Connolly and
the two other forwards, Hannah Murphy
and Molly Zaverucha carried the team in
points. The team success was also due to
Coach Manley and Coach Vandewater.

BOYS BASKETBALL I

The Duxbury Boys Basketball
Team had high hopes heading
into the 2011-2012 season. They
got off to a little bit of a slow
start, but then they found their
stride and picked up right
where they left off. The team
rattled off four straight wins to
end the regular season at 11-9
before heading to the state
tournament. After post season
play, the boys ended with a
record of 11-10, capping off a
hard earned successful season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

With a new coach, there were high hopes
and expectations for the team this year.
Coach Sullivan planned on turning the
girls program around to have a strong
season. Along with a new head coach,
there was also a new assistant coach, Keri
Flynn, who was a great addition and very
inspirational to the team. Starting out
with a very difficult schedule, playing
some of the best teams in the state, the
team began slowly, but this only
encouraged them to finish the season
with a 13 7 record. Entering the post
season at the 14th seed, Duxbury won
against Falmouth in overtime, the first
tournament win for Duxbury Girls in six
years. This was a huge accomplishment
for the team and the new coach. They
later lost to Natick in overtime. The girls
had a great season and plan on going
even farther next year.

The girls listen closely as they plan for a win.

Shannon McLaughlin, the lone senior on the
Girls Basketball team, had an outstanding
season this year.

BOYS ICE HOCKEY

This has been an eventful year for
the boys varsity hockey team. We
started off rough, and lost a series of
close one-goal games, but then we
hit our stride. It was our first year in
the Patriot League, and we ended
the regular season clinching the
championship with a win over
Pembroke. We 11 be heading to the
Cape Cod Classic over February
break, and hopefully we can then
make a run into the playoffs.
However the season ends, it was a
great year for the team s seven
seniors, one that none of us will soon
forget.

GIRLS ICE HOCKEY

This year the defending State Champion
Lady Dragons had an undefeated 20-0-1
season capped with a State
Championship. Lively assistant coach
Tim Bush was a new addition as well as
Marissa Fichter, Jane Dudley and
Meredith Wright. This was the first year
ever that the Lady Dragons were
undefeated for the regular season. This
very talented team was unstoppable.
Coached by Duxbury alumna Meg Cully,
the JV team was also undefeated this
season. Senior Captain Martha Findley
was a formidable defenseman, while
Junior captains Hannah Murphy and Lily
Connolly helped achieve the perfect
season. Sophomore goalie Rachel Myette

BOYS SWIMMING

The Duxbury Boys Swimming and Diving
team had a great season. After a short bout
of training to get in shape, the first meet
arrived. The meet began, and we raised our
mascot above us as part of our ritual to get in
the mindset to swim our best. That meet was
our first win and set us up for an excellent
season. After the regular season ended, the
team embarked on its annual beach run into
the frigid midwinter ocean. Each person on
the team contributed to our season's overall
triumph. We worked together to achieve our
goals, shared amazing experiences together,
and grew to be a close knit team. With five
new freshmen and a strong base of juniors to
take up leadership next year, it looks like our
team will continue to have this success into
the future. -Ben Zelvis

WRESTLING

This is a poem about the wrestling season,
The feeling of victory is quite pleasih,
We wear headgear,
To prevent cauliflower ear,
But we always wash the mats to prevent diseasin'.
We had a small group this time around,
Individual victories were where we were crowned,
We had four concussed, We took a van, not a bus,
And lost a few matches before our confidence was
found.

The wrestling team was famous for our warm up
routine,

The circular "dance" was something to be seen,
We ran round and round.
The dubstep was loud,

And now lets look at some kids from the team.
New this year were Matt, Tag, Pat, and Auer,
The loss of Kates and Leddie was not in our power,
Then there was JP, And of course Jim Chappius,
And despite the cheerleaders wants, the mini-gym
was ours.

To end the year we had three kids make states,

Owen Grey wrestled at heavy weight,

Jake Genereux wrestled 152,

And the 220 pounder, Bobby Boyle, was great.

Junior Owen Grey faces off against Whitman Hanson in a match presided over

ALPINE SKIING

When many students hear "Duxbury Ski
Team" they often respond with "Duxbury
has a ski team?" The answer to that
question is "yes", and Duxbury skiing
made a big impact on the Mass Bay Ski
League this year. The team practices at

Nolan, work the athletes hard, training
them to have fast starts and smooth turns.

The team captains this year, who led the
team to success, were Wilson Powell,
Madi Duddy, and Emily Meehan. The
boys finished in second place in the
league, while the girls finished in fourth
place. Senior Wilson Powell and freshmen
Tayler Kent and Vincent Cahill raced in

Shred the

the state championship and had great
finishes.

The members of the ski team enjoy being
a part of the team for more reasons than
just skiing; It is a small group and this
gives everyone a chance to get to know
one another. The team spends a lot of
time together on long bus rides to the
mountain, as well as at races that can last
for many hours. At almost every practice,
someone on the team comments on how
many new friends they have made because
of the ski team. It is true that you meet
and become friends with people whom
you would never have known if you
weren't on the team. Members of the team
also comment on how much they will miss
it when the season is over. It is a unique
team and, because of that, teammates
bond and have a really great time. Even
though this winter didn't bring much
snow, the Duxbury Ski Team was able to
have a successful and enjoyable season!

Dear Aidan,

When you quoted Monty Python skits, ("nudge, nudge, know
what I mean"), and sang Irish drinking songs at age three, we
knew you had a great sense of humor. From your first day of
preschool, when you waved and said so matter-of-factly, "see
ya later", we knew you were confident and self-assured. Then
watching you, thoughout the years, practice the piano and do
your homework with no reminders needed, we knew you were
self-directed and determined. And seeing the way you are with
younger or less fortunate individuals, we know you are caring,
thoughtful, and compassionate. We are so proud of the
amazing person you are. We know with these wonderful
qualities, as well as your intelligence and insight, you will
achieve whatever your dreams may be.

Love, Mom, Dad, Kate, and Jack

Is not so much where we stand.
As in what direction we are moving.

individuals said they felt less
emotionally charged when they
awoke, which led researchers to
believe they gained relief from
