Changes
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
I do believe I have been changed for the better
And because I knew you
I have .been changed for good.
~ For Good
We've all changed. Not one of us is exactly the same person that walked through the front doors ofDuxbury High
School in August. Whether we've noticed or not, life has happened to all of us.
Summer faded into fall, fall froze into winter, winter thawed into spring. Throughout it all, life went on. Siblings grew
up and moved out. Couples, seemingly meant to last forever, broke apart. Friends drifted away. At some point
throughout this school year, the world seemed to be ending.
Yet, as the seasons changed and our constants were ever-changing, good changes were made too: We were accepted to
colleges. New couples formed. Friends were made. Contrary to the Mayans' beliefs, the world kept turning.
We have changed ourselves to go along with our ever-turning, ever-changing world, whether we know it or not. The
differences are subtle to us, but we become aware of their presence when grandmothers squawk, "My, how you've
grown}" or when neighbors babble about how they knew us when we were "only this tall". These changes are signs of
our growth and maturity as people. They are a result of who we are, how we as individuals react to the life we've lived
and the people we've lived it with. They contribute to both the people we are now and the people we will become.
The world will never stop turning, at least not in our lifetime. Our lives will never stop changing, not for anyone. We
cannot stop the changes whether we want to or not. What's coming will come - we'll just have to meet it when it does.

Turn and face the strain.
football
By Jon Hurvitz
Our team has accomplished what most people dream
about - two Super Bowls, three league championships,
and most important - undefeated Turkey Day... a 48-1
record since our freshman year - not too bad I'd say.
Our team has two rules - be on time and be a good guy.
Be on time means be fifteen minutes early.
Be a good guy, however, cannot be summed up in one
sentence.
Being a gentleman, being polite, and being honest are
given aspects of being a "good guy". But truly, it's the
subtle things that count... the acts that go unnoticed by
others... those are the defining qualities of a true human
being... those are the subtle acts that COACH wants us to
understand. Those are the acts that mean the most in life.

of many of the elements in our routine. Though our scores
did not reflect it, I believe that we have greatly improved
our level of both stunting and traveling. Although we
didn't make it as far as we had hoped in competition, we
still enjoyed watching and cheering for our football team.
I am confident that our team will push through the
difficulties with scoring and injuries to have
a great winter season.

Boys Soccer
By Drew Caliendo
This was a great year for Duxbury soccer. Coming into the season
there were a lot of questions surrounding the team. We had a new
coach and the team had lost many seniors. We were not expected to be
very successful, but we gathered around our new coach and became
somewhat of a big family. I think I speak for the whole team when 1
say there's no coach we would have rather played for than Coach
Johnson. He really did a great job coming in and taking control of out
team. We started the season off great, winning our first few games.
Mid-season we hit somewhat of a bump in the road and struggled, but
we continued to work hard every day in practice and at the end of the
season we beat Whitman-Hanson to clinch a spot in the tournament.
In the first round we played Pembroke. We had beaten them earlier in
the season, but they were on a winning streak coming into the
tournament. The game was amazing. We won in penalty kicks and it
was a truly awesome moment. Unfortunately, in the next round, we
lost to Holliston. Still, all in all. the season was a huge success.

Girls Soccer
By Laura Nee
The Duxbury Girls' Soccer team had a great season
this year, ending the season with a 15-3-4 record. The
soccer team had success both in the league and in the
post season. Some big wins for the soccer team came
against Hingham, Scituate, New Bedford, and
Plymouth North. Their best game of the year was the
South Sectional semi-finals against Canton, a team
that had knocked them out of the playoffs in 2 of the
past 3 years. The game ended in penalty kicks and
brought the girls to the finals, where they eventually
lost to the state champion team from Medfield.
Despite this loss, the soccer team had a great run and
did very well this year and they surprised many people
along the way!

Boys Cross Country
By Liam MacDonald
In the dead of August, at nine am each day.
A group of special young men show up in disarray.
Tired, disheveled, and their hair hardly neat.
Having just rolled out of bed and looking down at their feet.
Timed miles, Marshfield loops, roller coasters and 400s galore.
So tired and sweaty, you have never seen such gore.
Well, one might think, "this is awful, how can this be?
One by one. daughter and son. wouldn't they all eventually
Just quit, try something else for a change maybe?"
Well, my friend, let me tell my story.
Running is great exercise, and can be a lot of fun.
But here is the real reason why then come.
Every day. new friends are made, we're shaped and molded.
When we are running, we hardly ever get scolded.
The friends that I have made throughout the years
Through running have made me laugh, gasp, and even shed tears.
More important, before I go.
I want to let all of you know
How special this team is to me. and how much it shows.
My coach gave me a structured house, my teammates a home.
And while the running is always there.
On a tough day. I don't even care.
Cross country and my running brothers give me something to look forward to
Without them. I don't know what I would ever do.

This fall season, Girls Cross Country gained a promising
group of freshman runners who showed their incredible
sportsmanship and talent as the newcomers. Led by senior
captain Caroline Bittrich, the girls ran in the second
annual Bob Mclntyre Twilight Invitational and Eastern
Massachusetts Invitational Meet. In every race, each of
the girls improved as they quickly adjusted to the training
cross country demands from each runner. Next year's
team will be led by senior Captain Jackie Hanrahan and
junior Captain Emily Gaita under the management of
Coach McLeod. Make sure to keep an eye out for these
ladies running the roads throughout the next three years;

Field Hockey
The 2012 field hockey season was one that no one could
forget. With only nine seniors and many new faces, we
fomed a bond that couldn't be broken. We began our
winning streak like we had done in years past, but this
time with a new coach. Coach Vanderwater, with assistant
Coach Connolly by her side, took the place of Pam
Manley. We didn't know how far we would make it. but
we took it game by game and grew with every new
opportunity that came our way. We faced many injuries
on the team, allowing other girls to step up and show their
skill. Sam Wyatt was the first boy to ever play on Duxbury
field hockey, which created a new way to play the
game. We had high hopes for the tournament, although
the weason ended when we least expected it to. Senior
Captains Kathryn Nutter, Hannah Murphy, and Emily
Giumetti handed over the rings to the new captains for
2013; Ally Hammel, Zoe Griffin, Lily Smith, and Katie
Smith. "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

We came off a great season last year and lost a great deal
of talent to graduation, private school, and injury. We
have struggled mightily this year to try to live up to the
goals we set before the season started. We are a very young
team and some players saw their first varsity minutes this
year. Though our chemistry has been somewhat off, it does
not reflect our work ethic and camaraderie as a team. I've
been in the program for a long time and seen the ups and

We only lost one senior from last year and had six players
returning who had had considerable minutes last year. With four
players over six feet tall, we are arguably the tallest team in the
state and we use our height to our advantage. So far this season,
we have held teams to an average twenty-eight points per game.
Everybody on the team contributes to the wins and by working
together we have been able to defeat everyone in our league. The
Three seniors leading the team have added experience as well as
talent to a squad that is very deep. We have proven that we are a
dynamic team by becoming undefeated league champions and
winning the league for the third year in a row. This team is special

The Duxbury Boys Winter Track and Field team finished up
a strong 2013 season this winter. Sophomore Tate Allen,
Senior Matt Abbott, and the two Senior Captains, Tommy
Sarles and Alec Stewart, all scored big points in the distance
events. Sophomore CJ Ruff, and Senior Pat Buell, who were
both mere seconds away from a Division Meet qualification,
kicked butt in the sprint events. Freshman Ryan Duffy
surprised many coming in as the top high jumper on the
team, earning his fair share of the point total. With strong
showings from both team veterans, and new members, the
team finished the regular season with a winning record of 4-
3. Unfortunately, due to the extreme conditions from
Winter Storm Nemo, the Patriot League Championship was
canceled entirely, and the Dragons were unable to test their
skills in the post-season. From the regular season alone,
however, it is clear that the team would have placed well,
and will continue to place well in the future. So, to all the
new and returning members of the team next year just
remember: run fast, turn left, and the rest will sort itself out.

Waking up at 5am is not everyone's ideal image of how their fall
mornings should go. For the girls varsity rowing team though,
this is what happened every day of the week, with few exceptions.
Throughout the season the girls saw major improvement on their erg
scores and technique in the boat under the watchful eye of their
coach, Ali Dimatteo, a DHS alum. The girls team raced in Worcester,
Lowell, Cape Cod, and at the Head of the Charles Regatta. The

competitors in the boat including the seniors. With most of the girls

Boys Crew
The Varsity boys began this past fall season in rebuilding mode,
having graduated talented oarsmen and coxswains from the previous
season. They put the work in early, gathering for captain's practices
long before the season kicked off in September. With an
underclassmen-heavy team, the Varsity chased high fitness goals while
tightening up technique on and off the water. With enough manpower
for two boats, the Varsity split into two boats of eight for the season.
The team saw success throughout the season, as many oarsmen set
personal and even team records, while the A boat competed in the
Head of the Charles Regatta in October. As the majority of the roster
will return for the next few seasons, the Varsity team has a very, very
bright future. The boys want to thank Veronica McCarthy for putting
up with their antics for the duration of the season, and would like tc
give a shout out to Duxbury alum Will Miller who competed in the

Local program director John Michael Gray said this competition has been an
exciting year for the number of student entries. Each year, entries have increased
up a little bit, but this year art entries have greatly increased. Student winners
received Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and honorable mentions. All Gold Key works

American Yield Service
The AFS club's goal is to promote world understanding through
intercultural learning and student exchange. Every year, Duxbury, as well
as many other towns in America, open their doors to host students from
more than forty countries. This year, Duxbury hosted students from France
and Italy, and hosted many social activities to welcome the exchange
students into our community. Members also attended presentations given
by other AFS exchange students throughout the Southeast region of
Massachusetts. By learning about other cultures and sharing ours, and by
forming friendships, AFS members become citizens of the world, hopefully
to make it a more peaceful and better place to live.

Here Comes Treble
r^ ^ The History of a Family £\m/^t~f?
Have you ever played the game of Life? The answer is yes. Even if you have never invested time into the extensive and well-
known board game, you have played Life every day. Every school day of every year you get up, go to school and take in the
experiences that are unique to each day. You talk with a friend or a bunch of friends, you laugh at the stories they tell or at the
"moments" they have. You learn things you never would have otherwise from teachers you either love or hate. But there is one thing
that most people overlook. Every day, you are playing the game of life with someone. Actually, you are playing this game with every
single one of your graduating classmates. We all get up together. We all go to school together. We all share experiences together. We
are the class the teachers talk about; the class they can't wait to get. We all believe in each other. We all started together. We will all
end together. We are not the class of 2013. We are a family.
Our history began in Chandler School where we abided by the "I Care Rules." It was in this school where we were christened
Duxbury Dragons for the coming years, a name by which the athletes of Duxbury would do proud with multiple championships and
Super Bowls. Every Thanksgiving in the Chandler gym, we would all belt out in questionable harmony, "We are the Chandler
Dragons" before our proud parents who would blind us with their flash photography.
It was also in this school where we began to learn beyond the basics of the alphabet, which we would proudly recite as if we
knew everything. We would boast that we could count to 100 and then proceed to do so in a very speedy manner. In first grade we
were taught to write and spell neatly between two incredibly thick lines with a dotted line dashed through the center. We started taking
spelling tests, something that remained until it was outlawed in seventh grade by the teachers who had to tiresomely correct them
every week. Then came the chicks that became an obvious symbol of our Chandler experience.
In second grade, renovations in Chandler were complete and we were the first class to make the big move to a new section of
the building. Because we were no longer allowed to go shoe-less for fear that we might step on a leftover nail from the renovations,
teachers encouraged kids to bring a set of slippers that they could leave in the classroom. This soon turned into full-fledged pajama
days, which my class took advantage of at least twice a week. In second grade we also learned cursive, which was mandatory in fourth
grade but which, looking back, is seemingly useless. We read to the class while being enlightened that the past tense of read is not
readed.
We indulged in trading Pokemon cards and playing with Neopets at recess. Many of us made predictions of this week's
episode of "Hey Arnold" and "The Rugrats". On Valentine's Day, we made containers out of shoeboxes and jumped for joy at the
prospect of getting a valentine from every person in the class. The candy valentines were always in high demand. At the end of the day
we would look through our boxes to find the valentine of the person whom we were especially happy to get one from. We wouldn't eat
the candy attached to that one because we had to keep it forever. But then our hunger would prevail and we would settle for just
keeping the valentine.
St. Patrick's Day was another day that we looked forward to, as we would come in to green and gold footprints plastered all
over the room and glitter and gold coins dispersed all over the ground. For some reason, no one ever caught a leprechaun in the trap
that they had spent a week working on in hopes that they would be the first class to catch one. Finally, it was time for Mrs. Zetterberg
to say goodbye to us and we embarked on a journey to the other side of town where we entered the Alden School.
Here, we remained the same hyper, eager students who left Chandler, but were introduced to many new "cool" fads that
became apparent at recess. Girls huddled together challenging each other to games with their Tamagotchis, while boys played very
unorganized games of soccer and football. Red Rover was also another game that proved really hard on the ribs when stubborn kids
refused to release their hands despite a person hurdling towards them. "The Hill," was the hangout spot for those who wanted to talk
or just roll down a hill over and over for a half an hour. At the end of recess came lunch, where kids rushed to the lunch line in hopes
of getting smiley fries before the kid in front of them got the last ones. If this happened, a high-stakes game of trading ensued, that
sometimes resulted in the exchange of an entire sandwich for just one smiley fry.
In third grade we used Alphasmarts daily in an effort to get us to be high-class typers, which unfortunately did not pan out as
planned. Hitting the A key with my pinky over and over did not consequently give me the skills they hoped I would gain. Alden was
also the time of personalized desks where we would shove our supplies in and call it our own. We had cubbies for the remaining
supplies that did not require an absurdly difficult combination to get in to as our lockers would in the coming years. As our backpacks
got a little heavier, many opted to use rolling backpacks to support the weight of our one major zip binder in which we carried
everything.
In fourth grade we all participated in the Wax Museum, holding some very uncomfortable poses for long periods of time. We
were always jealous of those who had a ground pose and could sit for the entire hour.
198
In fifth grade many of us entered into Duxbury's prestigious music program as we received our first instruments. Our parents
endured our first practice sessions and concerts of Mary Had A Little Lamb, many with plugs in their ears. Some students also
participated in ballroom dancing where girls had to wear white gloves to protect them from the boys" sweaty hands. Good times.
Fifth grade was also the time of mam field trips to Plymouth Plantation. Kids filed into the seats of the school busses that
seemed so oversized at the time. On the way. we would hear incessant chants of 99 bottles of "soda" on the wall, and make predictions
about our future in MASH to pass the time.
Fifth grade culminated in Field Day where we competed with our teachers against the other classes of our grade. Many potato
sack races, relays, and hula-hoop contests later, one class stood the victor of the day.
In Middle School, we entered into what could be deemed the "Land of Unnecessary Drama." Despite the obvious presence of
this, we saw our classmates change along with enjoying some of the new perks of the school. Most kids had the unfortunate experience
of sporting braces and being dissuaded from chewing gum by their parents, a rule which was often broken. North Faces. Polo shirts,
and Pumas also became the "necessity" for girls as guys begged for a pair of Heelys". a hot new commodity seen on TV.
With Middle School, came many other new crazes. Slushies at lunch permanently turned teeth blue and red for the rest of the
day. SGFs produced angry kids that had to miss their lunch for a music lesson. Flip phones became the cool new thing until the Mint
Chocolate outshined them all. Endless chain messages migrated from phone to phone because the sender would have "bad luck for ten
years" if they didn't pass it along to eighteen contacts. Jared the Subway Guy became, for some reason, a topic of discussion at lunch,
but I have no idea why. Changing for gym was rendered annoying because this was the first time we had to do so. It was also the first
time we actually got graded on how good we were at gym. a prospect that seemed unfair to all who feared the pull-up bar and running
the mile. Nintendo 64 was pushed aside as the Game Cube and Play Station emerged. IPod Nanos became a nuisance to the teachers as
kids refused to put them away and instead, threaded them up the sleeve of their sweatshirt and leaned their hand on their ear. If you
could pull this off. you were admired. We also took numerous Grow Quizzes and AR tests, and spent a ridiculous amount of time on
Sludge.
We experienced teachers who were the subject of many discussions. Kids would listen as their friends told them about the
mystery of Mr. Mack and his cat Misty. Mrs. Moore's meticulous methods for producing perfect handwriting were something
experienced by the seventh grade split-team. Smart boards sparked our interest as many kids fantasized about having one in their room
some day.
At our first dances, we danced to Soulja Boy and Low try ing to impersonate the real dance, which didn't go well. As Stairway to
Heaven came on. signifying an end to the night, boys were faced with the responsibility of asking a girl to dance. Enter drama.
Middle School also had its memorable moments. Endless trips to the Science Museum, a trip to Sturbridge. and an
unforgettable slavery walk at Nature's Classroom are memories that we still carry with us as we prepare to graduate.
Finally, following eighth grade promotion, we entered the doors of a school that was much different than any other. This school
was comprised of adults, people who could drive, presidents of clubs, elite athletes, and freedom. However. High School still had its
quirks. Silly bandz adorned the wrists of the many girls. Gym class wristbands were sought after with an amazing amount of effort and
determination by our gy m class heroes.
High school also meant branching out. We were no longer able to sit with the same people every day at lunch. We met so many
new people between clubs and sports teams. Facebook and Twitter enabled us to keep in contact with our teammates and friends and
share pieces of our lives with them.
In High School, new things emerged every year. Snapchat became a popular way to annoy our friends. In the hallway, many of
us watched as the football players made valiant efforts, some diving across three kids at a time, to get their enemy out in Assassin.
Freshmen year, the girls JV soccer team would serenade the rest of the bus with Justin Bieber's One Time. This year. Seniors
participated in the Senior Class Plays or went to support their friends, watching them make fun of Harry Potter and Twilight,
relationships, and college interviews, all of which were prevalent themes in our high school years.
This class has gone through so much together. We have experienced three memorable presidential elections. We have seen our
Boston teams win in all four sports at least once. We saw the end of the Curse of the Bambino. We saw the Patriots' massive
fingerprints soil the pristine shine of the Lombardi trophy three times. We saw the Bruins skate to a victory over the Vancouver
Canucks. We saw the The Big Three guide the Celtics to a Championship in '08. We saw the music program go to All-State. Carnegie.
D.C. and Disney. We saw the Drama program perform in four great musicals and go to States. We saw our athletes win Super Bowls
and State Championships. We reveled in undefeated seasons. We have been together for twelve years of our lives, from 2001 to 2013.
We have experienced life together while supporting each other on the way. We are not the class of 201 3. We are a family.

- THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS ~
Creating a yearbook is a challenging task. It is also always a challenge to find the means to
publish the book in order to share the precious memories of the year with our fellow students. In
addition to book sales, we must rely upon advertisements to enable us to meet the publisher's
cost of producing our book. These difficult economic times have made this an especially
challenging time to fund our book. With the help of both parents and businesses, we have once
again met this significant challenge, enabling us to bring the result of our hard work to life. The
Yearbook Staff wishes to thank all of our supporters, without whose help we could not have met
our goal. Please be sure to patronize our advertisers.

It's been a blast growing up with you. You are an awesome human being.
As you go forth to create your world, we wanted one last chance to give you
some sage advice (well, advice anyway).
• Avoid self-limiting beliefs and small-minded people.
• You do not always need to be on top but avoid the bottom.
• It's okay to change your mind during a discussion if someone reveals
"information you did not have".
• Remember you can always come home.

robot plays rock, paper, scissors
Physicists at the University of Tokyo created a robot that
can play rock, paper, scissors and win 100% of the time
against humans. The robot was programmed with a
high-speed camera that senses human wrist motion in 1
millisecond and determines which move the player will
choose before the motion is even made. Someday, similar
technology might be used in assembly line work and even
in hospitals.
