'•  My  ffather's  Chancellorship  and  practise  were  taken  away  to  the  value  of  a  thousand 
pounds  per  annum,  and  hee  died  in  Oxford  with  the  King.  He  was  pluaderd  of  all  his  goods  at 
his  house  at  tJreenwich,  where  he  lived,  to  a  considerable  value,  and  afterwards  I  sould  the  house 
for  foure  hundred  pounds  to  buy  us  bread,  for  I  was  forced  to  leave  my  eni)iluyinent,  and  to  live

a  prisoner  at  Lanceston  seven  weeks,  being  taken  at  Turringtou  upon  a  charge,  then  eommandiug 
the  party  that  first  charged.

said  Basil  Woodd,  LL.D.  A  monument  in  Winchester  Cathedral  bears  the  following  iirserip-

"For  this  renowned  Martialist  Richard  Bowles  in  Linekhornesbire,  Culunul  of  a 
Ridgement  (.</c)  of  Foot  of  1300,  who  for  his  gracious  King  rliaiks  the  Kir^t  did 
wonders  at  the  Battle  of  Edgehill.  His  last  action,  to  omit  all  utliei,..,  was  at  Alton 
in  the  county  of  Southampton ;  he  was  surprised  by  5  or  01)00  of  the  Kcbilk,  which

my  best  Commanders  in  this  kingdom.'
