BREVARD COLLEGE

A New Beginning

U-yrour work of creating your personal vision is the most motivating activity you can undertake
I for yourself in college. My recommendation that you engage in this activity is based on two
lessons I have learned from my years as an educator: First, every student can learn, unlock the

talent and ability which lies

within oneself, and can achieve
levels of performance which
you might not originaJly think
possible. Second, everything
worthwhile in life is created
twice. It is created first in the
mind, and then it is created in
concrete reality. As
Michelangelo described his

work  as  a  sculptor,  he  first  conceptualized  the  finished  work  of;
and then proceeded to extract it from the marble."
By Michael Quigley

"Coming to college for the first time is about as different
as visiting a foreign country. A freshman's surroundings are so
different, that they may just look around and say, " Did I
make the right decision? " However, as one, two, three weeks
go by, things seem to slowly make sense.

f Granted the dorms are no where close to the comfortable

surroundings of a cozy home. Although, once the realization
hits that you can pretty much come and go as you please, and

the words, ". . . as long as you
live under my roof... "aren't
even heard, dorm life doesn't
seem nearly as bad as it did
at first glance. "

Advising Groups

For the second consecutive year, advising groups were a

met once a week for various activities on campus, instructional

A very special part of student
-/Ygovernment is Twister
Productions. This group of student
volunteers works closely with Curt
Crowhurst, the associate dean for
campus life, to organize campus events
that will get students involved in fun
activites. This year's staff successfully
coordinated a variety of fun and
exciting events, including open-mic
night, video nights, Halloween
festivities, new student orientation,
dances, a visit from a hypnotist, and a
game show in which one lucky student
had a chance to win $500!

Twister's Virtual Pac-Man, an event held
during the spring semester, gave
students a new and exciting way of
looking at an old video game favorite.

This year approximately $67,776 was raised during
the Fall Phonathon. Student supervisors raised
support for the Stanback-Jones Challenge for Program
Development, which is a budget relieving fund that will
replace money already spent in areas such as student
scholarships, faculty/staff salaries, and classroom
supplies. During the fall of 1998, Trustees Bill Stanback
and Wes Jones gave monetary gifts totaling $1.5 million
to establish the fund. The college is now hoping for a 2:1
match that will generate a fund total of $4.5 million.
This fund is especially important during our
transformation from a two-year to a four-year college.

Among the more frightening events Twister
Productions organized this year were
"Snakes Alive!" and Halloween festivities.
Participation in these events this year was
great, and no students died of fright or snake
bites!

Family Weekend

The weekend of September 24-26 was when many of Brevard
College students' parents came to visit for Family Weekend.

Family Weekend was a schedule of events where BC parents got
the chance to experience a taste of college life. Throughout the
weekend parents could attend classes with their college student on
Friday, have conversations with the faculty on Saturday, and get a real
feel of dorm life on Sunday. This was only half of the fun. Parents
also had the chance to explore the town of Brevard by picnicking,
hiking, and taking in the beautiful sights of nature.

The weekend was enjoyable and parents left with a sense of
comfort that their son or daughter was at the right place not only for
education, but also for a lot of fun.

The Student Government Association is a student
run organization that serves as a liaison between
Brevard's student body, and its administration. This year
they were able to support and fund several other on-
campus organizations. They hosted an awards ceremony
honoring Brevard's students, faculty, and staff, and also
hosted Bizarre Wars. They helped fund raise for the

I can feel its'spirit overtake me.

I can feel no hunger,

for my soul is set free.

I now thank you god, for saving me..

Am I crazy for the things I do?

Boy you make me, feel so true.

Am I crazy, for the way I feel/

I can't help it, I've fallen...

Head over heels.
While my heart beats loud,
And my heart beats true.
My heart always skips a beat...
When I'm near you.
Do you listen to things I say?
For the questions I ask, are never delayed...
Do my words make sense?
If not, then that's okay...
Baby, I just wanted you to know I felt this way.

The Theater program continues to grow in numbers and
talent. The Fall production featured a night of three one-
act plays, two being student directed. Victoria Zgurs directed
an adaptation of O'Henry's "The Gift of the Magi". "Too
Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind", written by neo-
Futurists in Chicago, was directed by Faith Beddow. Dr. Bob
White wrote, directed and starred in his play, "Who Shall
Hang His Head in Shame?". His play won the New England
One-Act Play Festival in 1 977.

The Spring production, "The Conference of the Birds", was
based on a poem by Farid Uddi Attar. The play presented a
challenge to the actors and actresses because they had to play
more than one role per piece. It is a large cast play in which
birds discuss the development of the human being from a
different perspective.

Two friends enjoy their new discoveries in the Fall
drama class.

Imagination

Victoria Zgurs directed her
interpretation of "The Gift of
the Magi".

Included in the many exercise opportunities at Brevard College are
ballet and aerobics, both taught by Nancy Ballinger. Ballinger, a
resident or Brevard tor twenty-six years, and a teacher here for
eighteen, says she enjoys teaching but feels that, "students need
more respect and faith in themselves and their abilities." As for
participants in Ballinger's classes, they seem to agree that she is an
encouraging teacher and a "helpful and considerate" person.

In addition to the heart-pumping work-outs Ballinger's classes
provide, residents ot Jones hall began a Tae-Bo aerobics class that
meets three nights a week in the basement of Jones Hall. As seen in
the picture below, participation for the Tae-Bo class has been good,
and the girls seem to enjoy getting together to work out.

Dr. John Gudmundson went to
New Orleans for the International

As a first-year independent in the NAIA, it was certainly a year of mixed emotions.
Although not officially in the Tennessee-Virginia Athletic Conference until Fall 2000, the
BC squad took on the member teams and unofficially' won the regular season
conference, 6-1. Although a shortened inaugural campaign, the Tornados went 11-4, were
undefeated at home in seven contests and won 11 of the last 13 matches.

The Brevard College men's basketball team
has had a year full of ups and downs,
racing tough challenges against other teams as
well as against changes. The team was comprised
of many new faces rhis year, including the new
coach, Mike Jones. The team has also had to
deal with several injured players this year, which
no doubt added to the stress of the games.
Nevertheless, the team has faired well, with
several players bringing in high scores and
proving that the team can still triumph over
adversity.

This has been a very challenging season for the
Lady Tornadoes Basketball Team. The team lost
two seniors this year, leaving a team that consisted of
uniors, sophomores, and freshmen; however, this did
not stop them from striving to play their best. As with
other teams at Brevard, the women's basketball team too
had to adjust to the changes involved with becoming a
four year institution. Nevertheless, they played well and
there were several close games. The season ended with a
score of two and eighteen, with April Palmer as the
MVP. The team is excited about next year, which will
bring new opportunities and a new coach from Eastern
Kentucky.

The composition begins
with a single brushstroke.
Slowly the artist sends
colors, thick coat upon coat.

His white canvas invites him
to  spread  imaginative  genius;
create modern art's artistic gem
for the century's finish.

Vermilion red, orange
tangerine swirls, splatters
of dark tar and foreign
oils clinging to white matter-

these are his soul expressions.
Green enters, longitudinal line
crossing the plane with its progression
Unsatisfied, he signs it.

Interview with Sue Kavli

-What did you do before you got into teaching?

/ was an engineer in defense business, a computer systems manager for colleges, and

my husband and I were missionaries for ten years.

-What is it about math and science that interests you?

/ like having a problem and coming up with a workable solution. I enjoy math, but

computer science and programming solutions give me a real sense of accomplishment.

-What do you do in your spare-time?

When I have spare-time I like to hike, read, and work with the youth at my church,

but raising teenagers takes up most of my time.

-What do you hope to accomplish, or have accomplished, as
a teacher?

There are two main things. One is being a part of the learning
process with students and helping students realize that they can
do math and computer science. Beyond cbtss, I would like to
have a positive impact on students'lives through tough decisions
and challenges.

-What is the best and worst thing about teaching?
The worst is all the papers that I have to grade. However, the
hardest thing is to see students fail just because they won 't try. I
want to see all my students succeed!

-Is there any other dream you have that hasn't yet come
true?

/ would like to finish my PhD. I've been around the world a
number of times, so I've done most things that I have wanted to
do. (FYI: Mrs. Kavli has even hiked in Malaysia!)

A Day in the Life

You never find yourself

-Pearl Bailey

To heck with your high-tech cyber soc

With it's e-mails and dot corns

Whatever happened to our democracy

To our freedom

The rules and regulations

You lay down before us

Chain us up more

With every passing day

As you strive to safe-guard the world

;By enfolding us in technology

And locking us out

"Far from dangerous rivers

Telling us the importance of reading

While filling our minds with meaningless

information

Telling us our children will grow up healthier

Though they'll never know a smog-free sky

Or waters safe to fish in

You chlorinate our lives

With toxic brainwashing

Telling us this is the best time

To be alive

Well, why do you think so?

You've got us all so

Perfectly locked inside ourselves

That we've forgotten how to shafc

How to look someone in the

And what it means

To live off the land

Brevard College held its Commencement, a
two day celebration of the end of the
academic year and the graduation of the Class of
2000, on Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13.
Last spring Brevard College was proud to
announce Terrence B. Adamson, Senior Vice
President of the National Geographic Society, as
its Commencement Speaker. Adamson had also
been slated to give the address in honor of the
Colleges distinctive majors in environmental
studies, ecology, wilderness leadership, and its
immersion programs, such as Voice of the Rivers,
that combine adventure with protection of the
environment. Adamson's acceptance of the
invitation to speak was also a tribute to the late
Ralph Grey, a member of the College's Board of
Visitors, who had been a distinguished editor for
the National Geographic Society for many years
prior to his retirement to Brevard. Mr. Gray died
in March of this year. Brevard College was proud
to have 94 graduates, 62 of them graduating with
a four-year degree.
