Everything you've ever dreamed of. What
nore could you want? Even critics would
lave to admit that we had it all. From plans
or a new football stadium, a new library,
lix new houses in the Greek court and a
lew science building including the physical
herapy school in 1998, there was no mis-
ake- we were growing. Houses were

turned into resi-
dence halls to fit
all of our stu-

New student check-in this year was as smoothe as a cucumber.
Well, a cucumber does have a few bumps. Anyway, there were
1,650 students living on campus.

This student finds a quiet place to kick up her heels and focus on
her studies.

As of Dec. 1 2, no one wanted to pay the price of
$200,000 to move the Haggard Avenue House built by
the first dean of Elon Walter P. Lawrence. This was one
of several college houses to be torn down, or moved, to
build the new science building.

Residence hall life at Elon has drastically changed this year. The halls
are still loud, people still have roommate problems, and there will always be
something to cause a distraction from work and studies. The quality of living,
though, has improved.

In Smith and Carolina residence halls, students were welcomed by
freshly painted halls, new carpeting and new furniture. These halls also
received laundry rooms and are currently housing both freshman and upper-
classmen.

Due to increased enrollment, students are being housed in odd places.
Some new accommadatons include 19 freshman females living in the Haggard
Avenue House, 8 males being housed in the old Campus Security Office and
even some students being housed three per room in some halls.

Other accommodations for upperclassmen choosing to live off cam-
pus include East Campus apartments, Ashley Oaks, Oak Hill, Harmon, The
Brittany, Sheridan, The Colony, and Trails End . No matter where students
chose to live, they will have some advantages not found in other places and
consequently a place will be made for every student enrolled at Elon College.

Student Life*

Coming to Elon in August is an exciting experience for all students.
Whether you are an incoming freshman, a transfer student, or a returning
student, there are lots of things to be done in preparation for coming to Elon.
New students arrive on campus and immediately begin a vigorous week of
orientation, from meeting with their academic advisors to participating in Elon
Day with all its outdoor activities. During these days there were games,
activities for brother/sister halls, speakers, tons of meetings and a dance at the
end of the week. Orientation is a helpful time for new students to learn their way
around Elon's campus, make friends, and become adjusted to life away from
home.

Returning students look forward to beginning another year at Elon and
renewing their activities and friendships. The first several days are spent
shopping for just the right things to make their room or apartment look and feel
like home. Shopping at the Campus Shop is also a prevalent activity the first
few weeks of school in order to buy books for classes. It's not hard to walk out
of the Campus Shop with over $300 in books and supplies for fall semester
alone. Returning to Elon means liberty, independence and all the fund and
headaches that come with it.

Once again, the Adventures in Leadership
preschool program allowed freshmen to bond
over the summer by participating in an outdoor
experience.

New additions ...same old pride

This fall the changes on campus have run rampant — from building
modifications to decisions that govern the school. Announcement was
made that the athletic program will move from NCAA division II to
division I-AA; Health Services began charging students and staff for
prescriptions; six new Greek houses are being constructed in the Greek
court for occupation in fall of 1997; and the new science building started
to rise across from Holland House in March.

Next are plans for the new library that will stand where the power
plant and Health Services is located and a football stadium at North campus
where the soccer field is found.

The tasty addition of Elon's College Coffee Shop, which replaced
the furniture store located on Williamson Avenue, has become a cozy
habitat for local entertainment while eating. And McEwen Dining Hall,
which was expected to be renovated by October, finally reopened during
Winter Term featuring Little Caeser's, a deli and dining for 130.

There's a definite outbreak of changes at Elon, and to play it safe,
campus police were added to the staff and allowed to carry a gun when
responding to a call.

Annual events continue to grow

It never fails. Come rain or shine, there's going to be College
Coffee on Wednesday at 9:20 a.m... The Adventures In Leadership
preschool experience will help bond the new freshman class. ..There
will be at least two blood drives... The luminaries and Christmas lights
will make the campus aglow.. .and the list goes on.

This year, over 200 pints of blood were donated at the fall blood
drive, which surpassed Elon's goal, but unfortunately only 900 of the
planned 1,600 luminaries were lit due to rain.

On the same day, the rain didn't stop the Holiday Reception at
President Young's house. A shuttle from Moseley Center to the
Maynard House was provided for students who were greeted at the
front door of the immaculate brick home by the president's wife.
Guests first entered the dining room with the table spread with fruit,
bean dip, deserts, and punch or cider. After filling their plates, they
were invited to tour the house making their way to the president at the
fireplace, donning reindeer antlers and waiting to have his photograph
made with them.

A few days later, the Snow Ball dance was in full swing in
McKinnon Hall as the D.J. provided entertainment. From preschool
experiences to chatting around the fountain to graduating under the
oaks, everyone at Elon has the opportunity to take part in its ever-
Srowing traditions. — Felicia Massey

When Students are constantly on the move, trans-
portation becomes an important factor. For students with
cars, getting to where they want to go is no problem. Those
without cars have to walk, run, bike, rollerblade or catch
rides with friends to classes, campus activities and parties.

All kinds of problems can arise for students con-
tinually on the go. Whether its the hunt for a parking spot
(especially when it rains), tripping over a brick, or falling
off of a bike, most forms of transportation involve some sort
of risk.

The most bizarre things can happen when students
are in a rush to get somewhere. One student was pecked on
the knees by a duck after teasing it near Lake Mary Nell.
Another student was hit by a truck while biking to campus.

Most students are able to find a way to get where
they are going without many problems. However, some
students seem to find it easier than others when it comes to
transportation here at Elon. — Betty Carroll

^acuity and Staff: A Part of the Puzzle !

lere at Elon College the closeness of students and faculty plays a major part in the overall environment found on
ampus. The kinship between the staff and students cannot be matched anywhere. Whether it is a late night study
ession in Carlton or a phone call to a professor the night before a big exam, the faculty and staff of Elon go out of
tieir way to help a struggling student succeed in all activities in and around campus. The professors at Elon care
bout their students and it shows! These reasons and many more make Elon what it is and only begin to describe
^'hy we love it!

A Piece of Work A Piece of Mind.

Nine months of the year, one hour forty-
minute classes. Students learned from the first
homework assignment to the final exam, work
was part of every class. Developing skills and
learning facts, taking tests and writing poems,
students learned many new things. Sometimes
exciting, sometimes boring, academics cov-
ered it all. Though they were not easy, most

students found
a few classes
that were in-
tellectually
stimulating.

TIME

When do you have time to
study? Where do you go? Many Elon
students have to escape to their rooms
to catch some quiet time to prepare for
classes. Sure, the hbrary can be great,
but on a nice day, how about outside?
Maybe hke these students, you find
relaxing at the Fonville Fountain in
front of Alamance building a positive
study environment. In any case, it is a
"dirty deed" that we all must eventu-
ally do—why not make it interesting?

When some students find they
are tired of learning in the same old
building, at the same time, they dis-
cover a new place with new scenery.
Studying abroad could be just the
escape you were looking for. Seeing
the Eiffel Tower, exploring a museum,
or visiting The Beatles in a wax mu-
seum are just a few of the adventures
that await you on one of Elon's di-
verse study abroad courses.

Along with "Money Mind" Philip Carret,
Elon celebrated a belated 1 00th birthday. A time
capsule was buried in the Moseley Student Center
under the college seal and will remain buried until
the year 2089. The capsule was created and
sealed in 1989 and has been waiting to be buried
in the perfect spot until now.

Registrar Mark Albertson issued the invita-
tion to Philip Carret after seeing him on a televi-
sion show and again in a newspaper article. Philip
Carret, 100 "year" old Harvard graduate and
Army Signal Corps veteran, spoke to the business
department and at the time capsule ceremony on
November 29th.

All who attended were impressed with the
extent of Philip Carret's knowledge and his life.
Refreshments were served afterwards.

The Tower Bridge, completed
in 1894.

The first day in London, all the
Eloners piled into a bus (like the
one photographed) and toured
London that afternoon. Several
folks could hardly stay awake
after flying for eight hours and
getting very little rest on the
plane.

t was approximately
7:30 a.m. when the Continental
airplane landed at Gatwick
airport in London, and 35 of
Elon's faculty/staff/trustees
dismounted for a week of
adventure. The next group of
35 would arrive a week later.

Out of over 100
applicants, Elon selected 70 to
travel to London for a week to
get a taste of what it's like to
study abroad. Each participant
had to pay $300 to help cover
travel expenses, $65 for a
passport, and about $20 for a
weekly "tube" (subway) pass.
Everyone was also responsible
for his/her food, but Elon
graciously covered the other
costs to make the trip an
affordable chance of a lifetime.

The itinerary included
tourist attractions such as Big
Ben, Windsor Castle, Tower of
London, St. Paul's Cathedral,
British Museum, and many
more things like plays and
musicals. Some of the travelers
also decided to venture to Paris
and Bath.

Each day brought new
experiences and friendships
that wouldn't happen during a
normal workday at Elon.

This was a week made
of memories, from learning to
keep your curling iron on low
if you didn't want to burn the
hair off your head, to rooming
with someone you'd never met
on campus, to "minding the
gap" at the subway, to paying
20 pence to use the public
restroom, to sampling a baked
potato topped with pork-n-
beans and cheese.

A big Thanks to Elon
for making a dream come true.

Do you hear "America singing?" If so, you were
probably one of the many who attended Elon's fall
musical "Working," written by Studs Turkel.

Catherine McNeela directed the colorful and
classy show that proved that no one is "just a house-
wife." It depicted waitressing as more than a job, but a
grand experience, a show with an audience to match.

Did you ever wonder who did the brickwork on
"that house" you always passed, or wonder about the
fireman you saw on the corner? "Working " showed
that  people  are  more  than  just  a  label  of  their  job;
they're specific people with individual lives who are
proud of their work.

With talented voices and catchy 70s music,
"Working" captured the audience with its stories and
songs, proving again that Elon's musical theatre pro-
grams are constantly growing and moving farther

ahead. — Ama Majcher

Prep work doesn't always involve the set. Oftentimes

approach to making urban melo-

Celine Dion had the amazing good fortune of taking
two movie songs-"Beauty and the Beast" and "Because
You Loved Me" (from Up Close and Personal) and took
them to the top of the charts. The Canadian performer
has a dynamic voice that raises even the most modest
material to a level of loveliness. Her latest release,
"Falling Into You" was a runaway hit.

An R&B pop singer named Toni Braxton hit the charts
about three years ago and has not left since. Her latest
album "Secrets," blends her rich smooth voice with a
versatility that continues to grow with each new hit.
"Secrets" has the firepower to carry Toni to the top.

Tracy Chapman was back
on the charts with her
latest album "New Begin-
ning." As one critic wrote:
"One thing Tracy
Chapman has inevitably
gained over the years is
polish. This new album is
simply and impeccably
orchestrated, tightly and
urbanely played. The
songs are adorned with
soft jazz accoustics."

Mariah Carey was only a teenager when a Columbia
record executive heard her demo tape and signed her up.
Her first album soared to the number two spot and the
rest is history. It has been solid gold ever since. When
Mariah performs, her voice takes command over the
large band and battalion of backup singers. Her latest
album "Daydream" went all the way to the number one
position on the charts.

"The Woman In Me" was Shania Twain's biggest hit
album of the year. It was the second album released by
the Canadian singer, but it was by far the biggest hit. It
went platinum and stayed on the Billboard Top 200 for
more than a year. She won the New Country Artist of
the Year award at the American Music Awards Show.
As one critic said: "Shania has changed the face of coun-
try music for women everywhere.

George Strait began recording hit songs over 25 years
ago. He's still at it. Every one of his more than 20
albums for MCA records went at least gold and his total
sales are now about 30 million albums. His latest hit
"Blue Clear Sky" is well on its way to gold sales.

Peace in the Middle East remained unstable
as the school year began. A crisis erupted
after Israel opened a new exit in a tunnel
alongside a plateau, raising suspicions
among Muslims that the Israelis were
seeking to change the delicate religious
balance in Jerusalem's old city. The incident
proved to be the breaking point in mounting
Palestinian frustrations with the lack of
movement in carrying out the peace ac-
cords. Demonstrations followed where
nearly 100 people were killed. Then emer-

Football is definitely an American sport. It is
a spectator sport that is played by many at varying
levels. All the way from pop-warner teams to
professional teams, these male athletes gain skills,
bruises, and in some severe cases, broken bones.
These athletes are tough, determineci, and role
models for many. The Elon Fighting Christians get
up for early morning practices, just make dinner at
Harden after long evening practices, practice in all
weather conditions, and lift weights until their
muscles ache. What is all this for? For some just the
satisfaction of playing at the college level is enough,
some do it for themselves, others for their family,
some for scholarships but most do it to win.

The Elon football team was under a new
coaching staff this year and boy did the student
body see the effects. Walking around campus,
many football players were seen with casts on
varying parts of the body and many of these injuries
came from just tough practice days. The new
coaching staff, headed by Al Seagraves, put the men
to work but it definitely paid off in the end. The
Elon football team finished with the same record as
last year but the team showed much advancement
in their skill level. —Kim Jacklitch

Soccer is a game of quick footwork,
determination, speed and a will to win. The
Fighting Christians posess all of these quali-
ties. The soccer teams have long practices,
full of drills, sprints and long — distance
running. These players must stay in shape to
keep their game up to its prime.

The women's soccer team had an
excellent seaon with a record 10-4-2. These
women played well together and it showed on
the field. The defense kept oponents from
scoring while the offense fought hard to score
in tight situations. Overall the offense shot
more on goal than most of their opponents.

The men's soccer team, however,
didn't do as well as the women. Due to the
loss of some key players last year, the team is
young this year and the players will learn and
grow together.

Overall, as the season progressed, the
crowds got larger and the fans got louder.
The interest in this spectator sport is defi-
nitely growing and in the years to come.
Elon's players will once again dominate.

Elon's baseball team lost many key play-
ers last year but also received many excellent
transfers and freshmen who proved themselves
this season. The baseball team, under new Head
Coach Mike Kennedy, had an extremely tough
schedule this season preparing for the switch to
Division I. but the team stepped up to the challenge
and played excellent all season.

The Softball team is still a very young one
(with only one senior) but defintely one to watch
for. Last year, the women finished with a winning
record of 3 1 - 1 3 and this year the ladies aimed for
the conference championship. Pitcher Cheryl
Denny led the team with her excellent pitching
skills but the whole team chipped in and proved
that they can work very well together.

Watch out for the Elon softball team, be-
cause they are on the rise and next year should
prove to be even better because all but one player
should return.

Both the men's and women's basketball
teams began their seasons strong with many
\ictories over some tough competitors, but both
finished sixth in the field of eight in the South
Atlantic Conference, before the conference tourna-
ment.

For the men, senior Seth Chambless
stepped up this season as point guard and was one
of the leaders in assists and steals in the SAC.
Chris Kiger was the leading scorer in many of the
Fightin' Christians' \ictories and reached a mile-
stone of 1,000 points in his basketball career. Many
other players contributed to the outstanding
playing of the men's team with excellent defense
and good ball-handling skills, making good
decisions that brought enthusiasm and excitement
into the Alumni Gym for eyery home game. These
men ended up finishing first at the conference
tournament and are looking bright for next year
with all their young talent.

The women also had their eyes set on a
conference title but due to the loses in some key
games, the ladies didn't do as well as they had
hoped. The women's basketball team had an
excellent season with key players Lakia Hayes,
Anne Monstead and Jodie Hallett averaging over
10 points per game. Many other players also
contributed to the second placement at the confer-
ence tournament with determination.

Elon's athletic department is seeking
volleyball and cross country players who
possess the following qualities: determination,
commitment, time and a will to win.

This ad could have been used when looking
for Elon volleyball and cross country players.
These athletes go through long, strenous
practices full of sprints and jogging. The
volleyball players serve, pass and spike ball
after ball until almost perfection is achieved.
The matches and meets are challenging and
require much preparation but the rewards of
playing a sport in college and winning a game
is satisfaction that overcomes the pain of
practice.

The volleyball team was a very young one
this year with no seniors. These young players
had to pull together and rose to the challenge,
ending with a great season.

Last year, the men's cross country team was
the top one going into the finals. Coming into
the season this year, the cross country teams
were confident that they would be the leaders
in the conference once again.

First-Come,

The sport of tennis is definitely one of
the most challenging and demanding of the
individual sports. For the Fightin' Christian
tennis teams, their lives consist of constant
practice, competition, and travel for a few
months of the school year, finding time some-
where for classes and schoolwork.

Elon's players, both men and women,
have a lot to live up to because Elon's tennis
program has a great history. The '97 teams
consisted of players with determination, a
great serve, skilled forehand and backhands
and strategies that helped them win matches.

Both teams lived up to the challenge
finishing with good seasons and playing with
heart and skill. They also feel confident that
the future is looking good for them.

Cheer Up!

Golf & Intramurals Get Down

Golf is a quiet sport that takes much
practice, perserverance, patience and determi-
nation. The Fightin' Christians golf team trav-
eled from course to course throughout the season
coming out with many victories. This year the
sport opened up to women, and Elon is very
excited about the future that lies ahead for the
lady golfers.

Intramurals are a fun and enthusiastic
way to get involved on campus. Anyone that
wants to become involved can get a team to-
gether or just show up at the interest meeting for
a particular sport and join a team that needs extra
players. The prize for the first place team is
usually a T-shirt, but the fun that is present by
participating is the reason students join.

Sometimes the Elon cheer-
leaders aren't the main
focus on the field or court,
but no one realizes how
much time and effort is
put into cheering. These
men and women practice
for long hours sweating
until their muscles are ach-
ing and the cheer is per-
fected.

<~ Elon is #1. Sebrina Skrabak's enthusiastic
school spirit could be seen all the time.

The Final Piece A New Beginning

Throughout 1996 and 1997, Elon College was presented with many obstacles and overcame them all. But
one of the toughest decisions made by the college was the tearing down of the Haggard Avenue House in order to
make room for the development of the new science building. The 92-year-old house has been the home to Elon's
business law professor Dr. Robert Baxter, the Honors Program and for departmental offices. Before its destruction,
the house was a residence hall for freshmen. Judging by the increase in students, majors, and programs at Elon. it's
evident that the college is breaking ground for more improvements. Elon's pieces of its vision are falling into place.

Mark McAdams,
who laid the first
brick tor West
Buikling in 1906,
was the first
honoree to scoop a
shovel of dirt for
the new science
building ground-
breaking. Here
we see John R.
Kernodle taking
his turn.

The 1997 men's basketball
team won the South Atlantic
Conference Championship
and had the opportunity to
compete in the NCAA
Division II tournament. Here
the team boards the bus for
the first big game. Unfortu-
nately, they lost to Elizabeth
Citv,'77-70.

Elon began construction on the new $2.5
million dollar Greek housing project located
adjacent to the already existent Greek Court.
Here are three of the six houses in progress.

Brian Whitson displays the first-place shovel
designed by the American Chemical Society
for the ground breaking of the new science
building on March 12, 1997. Sigma Pi received
second place and New Student Orientation,
third.
