A Word From
Our President
Dr. Ray C. Phillips
Dear Cumberland University Students:
Every year, Cumberland University passes milestones and creates new levels of achievement to sur-
pass. The 1993-94 academic year was no exception; consider these accomplishments: Fall semester en-
rollment reached a record-breaking 1,001 students; an innovative Writing Across the Curriculum Pro-
gram was implemented; the 1994 edition of "Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universi-
ties" included CU students for the first time since 1984; The Phoenix Players and the Cumberland
Singers Ensemble performed in six student productions, including Cabaret — the first musical to be
performed at CU; Sigma Sigma Sigma National Sorority installed Zeta Xi chapter; the football team
played in its first NAIA playoff game after ending the regular season with a 9-1 record; and the 1994
graduating class of 170 was the largest in the history of the University and included the first students
to complete the BSN degree program.
Cumberland University is poised and has within its grasp the potential of becoming, not only one
of the best, but the best educational opportunity and choice for students. I want to congratulate the
students of CU whose commitment to the liberal arts tradition has contributed to our reputation for
academic excellence.
A
Mrs. Imogene Ahles
\
Mrs. Ahles, a long time administra-
tive secretary to the president of CU,
massed away after a long battle with
^ ung cancer in July of 1993. She had
worked for Cumberland for over 40
years and was very knowledgeable of its
^ history.
This past December, her husband.
Judge Ahles, took a special interest in
the 'Tove Lights a Tree'' fundraiser for
the American Cancer Society and was
honorary chairman. The tree lighting
ceremony was dedicated to the memory
of Mrs. Ahles.
Mrs. Ahles was an asset to Cumbers-
land and she is missed greatly. This is
why the Phoenix Staff chose
her to dedicate the 1993-94
Phoenix to. She had so much
to contribute to the commu-
nity and she will always be re-
membered. K

Bars on Windows
The controversy over bars on dorm windows began
last year when they were placed on the windows at Mary
White Hall. Now, The Collegian has received com-
plaints about Edward Potter Hall. Residents are upset
that the windows only open a couple of inches instead of
the wide breadth to which they formerly reached, citing
fire escape as their reason. According to University
President Dr. Ray C. Phillips, the bars are in place for the
safety of the residents and are within fire code regula-
tions. Dr. Phillips insists they were not placed there to
prevent women from being sneaked into the rooms.
Although bars on the windows arc aggravating and
prevent the flow of fresh air, a more serious problem
should be addressed. The restrictions on opposite sex
visitation. Restricting the nights that one can have a
member of the opposite sex in their room is ridiculous.
First of all, the rule is not going to stop the visitations
from occurring, and secondly, it just adds to disciplinary
problems. At the rates charged for dorm rooms these
days, restricting visitation adds insult to injury.

People! People! People! What are we doing?
College, just like society, is meant to be a cooperative com-
munity-all of its members working together. But we don't.
Every day, we do whatever it takes to get to the top. We lie. We
cheat. We steal. And for what? To improve our image? To
become better people? I don't think so! We do it so we can get
what we want when we want it. We are selfish creatures, and our
selfishness shows.
When will we begin thinking about others instead of our-
selves? We must start being considerate, being human, now. We
can fulfill neither our potential nor our community's potential
until we do.

Bulldogs Explode!!
LEBANON,
Tenn. — We are so
proud of our
Dawgs! In the
fourth season of
CU's "Risen from
the Dead" football
urogram, the bulldogs triumphed to
lear perfection with a season record
Df 9-2 and a trip to the 1st round of
:he NAIA Playoffs.
The winning began with the sea-
son opener — a home game against
linch Valley. It was the debut of
-lew Head Coach Herschel Moore
and the wing-T offense which took
333 yards while the defense forced 7
:urnovers. The Bulldogs intercepted
passes and beat CV 24-17. On to
Zambellsville — the Bulldogs' de-
ense fortified the win, 26-21, by
rorcing five more turnovers. The
:\ext victim was Tusculum, who fell
victory. The "blizzard" and frigid
temps of Homecoming '94 were
rough, but it didn't stop the 12th
ranked Bulldogs from beating Be-
thel College 33-12 and rising into
the top ten NAIA rankings at no.
9. NCAA Div. Ill giant Evansville
handed the Dawgs their only reg-
ular-season loss with a score of
12-28. No matter, the raging
Dawgs went to Athens, TN, and
won the season finale against
TN-Wesleyan 16-9. The Bulldogs
finished at no. 14 in the NAIA
rankings and headed to Puyallup,
Washington, to take on no. 1-
ranked Pacific Lutheran in the
first round of the NAIA Division
II playoffs — a first in the history
of Cumberland University. The
Lutes came out with the win,
61-7, but the Bulldogs put up a
good fight and came home to a
L7-7 to the Dawgs. After this game, school proud of her awesome
ZV was ranked in the top 25 in 1993 football team. The team was
!^AIA Division II rankings. The accompanied by friends and fam-
3ulldogs' record improved to 4-0 af- ily to Washington, but as the ma-
er the next game, at Maryville Col- jority of CU's family was left in
ege. The defense held Maryville to Tennessee, John Wood did a great
75 yards rushing as the Dawgs won job (as usual) of bringing the
18-6 and rose in the NAIA rankings
o 17th. In a killer home win over
Sewanee, the bulldogs held the Ti-
gers to MINUS 52 yards on the
ground and sacked the quarterback
15 times. CU won 14-13 and rose to
15th in the NAIA poll. The next
team to feel the bite was first year
program Sue Bennett. Sloshing
around on a muddy Kirk field, the
uUdogs slayed the Dragons 27-0
and rose two notches in the NAIA
rankings to 13th. Cu then came up
with a 27-24 win against 18th
ranked Union, thanks in a huge
way to Chris Jefferson's 42-yard
^coring pass to Terrance McClain
with 1:49 left to play, which pulled
the Bulldogs from behind for the
game home to us on the radio. He
was assisted by injured CU player
Jason Harville.
The senior leaders on the team
came a long way from the "first
year" team of so long ago to join
with their teammates in celebrat-
ing a dream season. We knew the
Dawgs could do it all along!
Congratulations to all of the play-
ers, coaches, and staff who were
part of the program.
The Bulldogs got a new Head Coach, Herschel
Moore. Moore served as an assistant under
Nick Coutras and took over at the end of the
'92 season. Coach Moore coached high school
football in Nashville beginning at Isaac Litton
High in the late 1950's. Coach Moore had a
great first year, as his Bulldogs went to the first
round of the NAIA playoffs and he was named
Coach of the Year for NAIA District 24 and
Co-Coach of the Year by the Tennessee Sports
Writers Association!

'The Beginning Of A New Era"'
Cumberland University be-
gan a new tradition by cele-
brating its first Football
Homecoming on October 30,
1993. (The last basketball
homecoming was in January
of 1993.) The day was cold,
wet, and snowy, but success-
ful. A parade (full of half-fro-
zen people) rode through
town, CU beat Bethel 33-12,
and out of 24 nominees, a
shivering Angle Abbott was
crowned the 1993 Homecom-
ing Queen.

Concert
On April 15, 1994, C.U. had the wonderful opportunity to have Lou-
ise Mandrell to perform a benefit concert at the Dallas Floyd Gym.
This concert was to benefit the renovation of Bone Hall into a new sci-
ence facility. All of the proceeds from the ticket sales to the faculty,
students, and the public will go towards the renovation. Mrs. Mandrell
(and her band) graciously gave her time and talents to help raise funds
for this project. C.U., present, and future science students thank her.

The PHOENIX staff had a really hard time
picking a cover for this year's book. We
thought about a bulldog, but there were several
negative comments about having the sports
mascot on the cover. The PHOENIX had al-
ready been used recently and so had a render-
ing of Memorial Hall, the school's most recog-
nized symbols. So we decided to use our school
seal.
If the book looks a bit thicker, it is because
we added 24 pages, taking us from the usual
116 pages to 140 pages.
Most of the art in the book is original art.
Artists for the 93-94 book are Brandi Beard,
Madeanna Parks, and Erin Vaughn.
Yearbook: The PHOENIX is printed by Jos-
tens. The cover is midnight, with cordova grain
and a black rub, and gold foil. The type is Pa-
latino. It contains 140 pages.
i
1
The PHOENIX staff would like to rec-
ognize the people who helped in putting
the yearbook together this year. Special
thanks to: Terry Thompson, Judith Kid-
well, SGA, Melinda Yarbrough, Leann Al-
lison, Spencer Pope, Sonny Barrett at
Seat's Studio, the Collegian Staff, Jim
Henderson, Charlie Tatum (CABARET
photos), The Lebanon Democrat, The Wil-
son World, Dr. Daniels, Mr. Harold
McGehee, Dr. Ray Phillips, Custom Color,
all of the clubs and organizations that
helped us so much by submitting stories,
season scores, and photos, and anyone else
that we might be leaving out that helped
us in any way.
Some features use information from ar-
ticles in the Democrat. The Collegian page
uses segments from various issues of the
Cumberland Collegian newspaper.
