ADVERTISEMENT.
THE great variety of Provincial Copper Coins
issued bet-ween the years 1787 and 1-794 induce a many people
to make collections of them ; still more attempted to obtain a
complete series: but failing in the attempt, I thought a repre-
sentation of them engraved on Copper-plates would serve as
a substitute. It was at first my intention to keep each work-
man s productions by themselves ; the Coins on the first three
plates being all executed by one person : but when I attempted
to select from my collection for the succeeding plates, I found
it impracticable to pursue that method, I therefore afterwards
placed them promiscuously; still continuing to arrange the Coins
on each plate according to the workmanship, thofe that are best
executed being as near as possible kept by themselves on sepe-
rate plates. Towards the latter end of the year I794 and
the beginning of 1795, // became quite a trade to manufacture
them, and prodigious quantities were issued, some payable,
others not payable ; and the greater part of those that were
best executed was counterfeited, and the obverses and reverses
so mixed, that it was almost impossible ft distinguish which
were originals : and lately dies have been executed for the sole
purpose of furnishing the collectors, the productions* not being
intended for circulation ; indeed many of them are so infam-
ously base, that, in my opinion, they are a disgrace to the age
we live in, and such as I dont think proper to admit into
my collection. Others are issued that are better executed,
some of which I have not been able to obtain; although I must ,
^vitb gratitude, acknowledge the politeness of Miss Banks,
Soho-square, in furnishing me with several that, in all pro-
bability, I could not otherways have procured.
In the index I have, as far as I could obtain information,
given the names of the Die-sinkers ; and where no name is
expressed I have not been able to learn it.
