COUP IN THE SOVIET UNION:

Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and his family were
placed under house arrest in the Crimea on August 19, 1991,
as an 8-person emergency committee led by V.P. Gennady
Yanayev took power in a coup attemtp in the Soviet Union.

Crowds of perplexed people wandered among the many
Soviet tanks parked behind the Red Square during the military
coup hours.

Before dawn on August 22, an Aeroflat jet arrived a Vnukovo
airport, Moscow, bringing home Gorbachev and his entou-
rage. The coup failed and all coup leaders were arrested,
except for Interior Minister Boris Pugo, who reportedly killed
himself.

The Cheering and the Playing:

When I sat down to write this article, I
wanted to concentrate on all the "sports"
things that happened in my four years on the
Hill- not just on campus, but everywhere. I
tossed over the four years in my head, waiting
to see what came to mind.

Most of the images were bad.

Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight
champion, is in jail. He raped an eighteen-year
old college freshman. Pete rose, the all-time
baseball hit leader, was just released from jail
for tax evasion; this came after he was booted
from baseball for - gasp! - gambling on his own
team. Magic Johnson retired from basketball
after becoming HIV-positive from unprotected
sex with . . . someone.

Drugs remained the prominent problem in
sports, as athletes continually refused to heed
the lessons of Lenny Bias. Dwight Gooden. Roy
Tarpley. Bob Probert. Darryl Strawberry. Dexter
Manley. Some are out of sports now; some still
play and are not the same. Lenny Dykstra
almost killed himself and teammate Darren
Daulton by drinking and driving. Billy Martin's
life ended as he left a bar with a drunken friend
behind the wheel.

Even when I try to remember the images
that stand out from the last 48 months, I have
to wade through the terrible ones. I remember
watching Hank Gathers drop dead on television
across a crowded, noisy Bahamas bar. I
remember my girlfriend calling me at home to
tell me that Magic Johnson had AIDS, and I
remember staring straight ahead, at nothing, as
the words tried to vainly to register through my
brain.

I also thought of the heroes who had
continually let us down. Some failed because o
their own shortcomings - Tyson, Rose, Manly,
and the rest. Others were simply unable to rise
to the occasion - people like John Elway, who •
failed in his third straight Super Bowl. Or
Buster Douglas, who munched away his
heavyweight title after a storybook knockout o
Tyson. Or UNLV and the Oakland A's, two
dynasties that never were. Even Bo Jackson,
Mr. Athlete, pushed his limits too far; instead l
of playing football and baseball, he plays
neither.

(Indeed, we are at a loss for heroes in the
90's. This may be because of the media,
because we grow up faster, or even because w« !
have been hardened by the scandals and the
violence of the past twenty-five years — not just*
in sports but beyond. I think this explains why'
Michael Jordan's popularity is so outrageous; i
someone is talented and clean in the nineties, j
then they're set for life.)

Worst of all, I noticed that I was growing old'
My favorite athlete, Larry Bird, had become an
antique. My favorite baseball player, Dwight
Evans, was unceremoniously released by the
Red Sox. My favorite boxer, Sugar Ray
Leonard, was humiliated into retirement by
Terry Norris. Even the greatest and most
popular athletes of all time- Muhammad Ali- is
a shell of his former self, a victim of too many
punches to his own hubris.

Of course, all heroes grow old. Yet when
your favorite players are suddenly mentioned ir
the past tense, and when a hotshot, phenom
shortstop is YOUNGER than you . . . well, it's

I-

A Sportswriter's View

retty numbing.

Everything changes both in life and in sports,
ake Holy Cross, for example. There was a
me when athletics were a focal point of a
tudent's education. I think about the future
tudents, the ones who never get to experience

game like H.C.-LaSalle (hoops), H.C.-Maryland
somen's hoops), or H.C.-Lehigh (football). I
matched all three games in person, with my
wn eyes. The LaSalle game was in 1990; they
ossessed a future NBA star in Lionel
immons, and we were blessed with our finest
*am in ten years. The entire student body
ocked into the Hart Center - for once - on a
aturday afternoon, and there was so much
motion, so much intensity, so much
xcitement ... if you were there, then you'll
now what I mean. In the end, LaSalle
revailed. They beat us by three.

But that wasn't the point.

Just as the score wasn't really the point
hen our women's team defeated Maryland in
le same raucous atmosphere (to advance in
le 1991 NCAA's), and just as the score wasn't
le point when Duffner and Company prevailed
t Lehigh, 43-42, for the Patriot League title,
/ins and losses are important, yes, but so is
le feeling of being in a crowd, of contributing,
f cheering for your school. And as the
dministration deemphasizes athletics, then that
ieling ■ that powerful, mighty, invincible feeling
may become extinct as well.

Indeed, it is that feeling that enables us to
)lerate all of the Mike Tysons and Pete Roses
id Dexter Manleys of the sports world,
emember the Atlanta/Minnesota World Series?

The Duke/Kentucky game? The Giants/Bills
Super Bowl? Nolan Ryan's seventh no-hitter?
The Bruins/Edmonton triple overtime game?
Duke upsetting CINLV, and Douglas upsetting
Tyson? Kirk Gibson's home run? Bo Kimble's
left-handed free throw? Larry Bird's Game 5
against Indiana?

I'll bet any amount of money that, if you try,
you could remember where you were during at
least one of those events. Why? Because we
follow sports for those rare moments when the
game can elevate us to a higher plane, a higher
state of being, lifting us up, if only for a
second. Where else does that happen? WHERE
ELSE?

I remember at the end of the HC/Lehigh
game — after ten second half touchdowns, four
lead changes in the final five minutes, one
almost - "Hail Mary," one "fumblerooskie," one
interception-lateral-touchdown, and eight plays
of at least forty yards - after ALL OF THAT,
when Holy Cross finally ran down the final few
seconds, my fellow radio broadcaster, Horgs,
and I held our arms straight up in the air,
looking down from our booth in triumph at the
crestfallen Lehigh crowd. Not only had the
football team won, but we had won as well.

Whether that feeling is spawned from playing
or from cheering, one thing is for sure . . . few
things can match it. And as the line between
sports and real life continue to merge, maybe
we all need to step back and remember why
we play and why we cheer.

FOOTBALL

Holy Cross Football

Over the past six years, under the direction of Mark Duffner,
the football program at the Cross has risen to national promi-
nence. The Crusaders compiled a 60-5-1 record, several impres-
sive winning streaks, and the adoration of fair-weather as well
as loyal fans.

The seniors of 1992 were an integral part of this success
since stepping on to Fitton Field. With an overall 39-4-1 record
they topped it off with an umblemished 11-0 record in their
final season. But more importantly, the team demostrated
character throughout the season. In five of their eleven games
they trailed, three of them by double digits. This team was,
however, loaded with great players. Star quarterback and cap-
tain Tom Ciaccio gained sole position of five HC records and
tied two others and moved into 8th in Career Passing in NCAA
history. Tom was named to two All-American teams, won
Patriot League MVP and was named ECAC I-AA co-player of
the year. Tailback Jerome Fuller was named first team Ail-
American by six publications and the team's offensive back of
the year. He rushed for 1,465 yards on 266 carries. Anchoring
the offensive line was Pat Gibson who was named to two All-
American teams. Karl Schultz, Bill Getzinger, and Rick Stahl
were also All-Patriot League picks. Matt Nasser was named to
the All-league defensive line and also earned the coveted
Coaches Award. Pete Dankert, the outstanding Crusader nose
guard finished with 16 sacks and honors which included All-
Patriot, All-New England, and GTE Academic All-American.
Corey Vincent lead the charges for the defense, and the Patriot
league as well. He was named league defensive MVP and to

four different Ail-American teams. Senior defensive back
Chris Kovath received the Purple Pride Award and was
named to a host of All-Amerian teams. Matt Morgan and
his counterpart Ron Flauto were both named to the Patriot
League first team. Flauto also was named a GTE All-
American. The team was blessed with two great receivers
in Joe Riley and Darrin Cromwell. Joe was selected as
GTE Academic All-district and D.C. was voted Unsung
Hero by his teammates. Mark Roman, became the team's
leading wide receiver after playing back-up QB for three
years. He moved into first place on the single season
touchdown reception list. Rounding out the seniors who
produced for the undefeated Crusaders were: Fred Clark,
Chris Auth, Randy Mariano, Chris DeAntoni, Fred Givens,
Tom Paluska, Matt Hanley and Lenny deMontagnac.

The future looks just as bright for the Crusaders, led by
'93 studs Tom McDonald, Marcus Duckworth, John Pow-
ell and Ron Hooey. Coach Mark Duffner has walked off
Fitton field for the last time but HC alumnus Pete Vaas
has taken over the helm. The record holding class of '74
quarterback and his staff will provide the Crusaders with
many more seasons on top.

WOMEN'S FIELD HOCKEY

From the outset the 1991 Wom-
en's Field Hockey Team faced a chal-
lenging season in only its seventh
year in the competitive Division I.
While the season proved to be a re-
building year, the team did achieve
its ultimate goal of improving
throughout the season.

The senior class was represented
by three players; co-captains Kristin
Cieri, Jane Ferguson and Tara
Schaffer. Kristin Cieri was named
team MVP and was also selected to
the All-Patriot League Team for the
second year in a row.

Co-captain-elects Nora Tracey and
Chantal Lacroix combined to lead the
team in interceptions and defensive
saves. Nora Tracey was selected to
the All-Patriot League Team. Juniors
Lisa O'Neill, Wendy Faivre, and Ja-
net Burke all made positive contribu-
tions on the field and will be looked
upon next year to help anchor the
offense and the defense as well as to
provide senior leadership. Sopho-
mores Colleen Langley (team leading
scorer) and Carolyn Locurto earned
starting positions this season and
aided in leading the offensive line.
Yuki Minami, Liz Walsh (Most Im-
proved Player) and Kate Dawson,
combined successfully on defense
and are an integral part of the strong
contingent of sophomores. Likewise,
the freshman class contributed in
key positions. Rookie of the Year
Laurie Colarusso topped off the de-
fensive backbone as sweeper. Simi-
larly, Sue Cameron assisted in an-
choring the defensive line. In
addition, Michele Gagne, Erin Hoye,
and Julie Gomeau all provided note-
worthy assistance on the forward
line. Valuable goaltending capabili-
ties were contributed by sophomores
Tara Tully and Cheryl Lane.

As the talent of the returning
squad points toward an even brighter
future for the Holy Cross Field Hock-
ey Program, the enthusiasm and
closeness of this 1991 team will not
be soon forgotten.

Although the record may not reflect it, the 1991 volleyball season
was successful. Despite facing tough losses and many tough
teams, the overall positive attitude led to the fulfillment of many
personal goals.

The squad was quarterbacked by co-captain Ellen Pinkowski.
Ellen's sets allowed for many a ferocious hit by fellow co-captain
Isabelle Desnoyers. Ellen's tough serving also placed her in the
Patriot League's top Ace percentage. The captain's leadership both
on and off the court encouraged team unity in the face of tough
defeats. Ellen and Izzy's enthusiasm for their teammates personal
development allowed new friendships to develop and old friend-
ships to be strengthened. This was especially true for team MVP,
Ellen Pinkowski whose unselfish contributions made her an out-
standing setter and team player.

Another strong senior hitter was Denise Richardson. Together
with senior defensive specialist, Stacey Sweklo, they were impor-
tant parts of the team's support structure. Stacey never failed to
supply the team with that essential dig and much needed intensity.

WINTER
SPORTS

The 1991-1992 Crusader Men's Bas-
ketball Team entered the season with
hopes of winning the Patriot League
and gaining a birth to the NCAA Tour-
nament. However, the team's efforts
were severely handicapped following
Dec. 29th as the Crusaders lost the ser-
vices of 7' 1 " Scott Martzloff for the rest
of the season. The senior center broke
his foot in the first half of a game at
Vanderbilt in the finals of the Music
City Invitational. Several national publi-
cations had predicted Martzloff to be
the Patriot League preseason player of
the year and before he went down he
appeared to be on his way to an excel-
lent year. His loss was a terrible blow
but the crusaders did not crumble.
Rather, the team came together and
compiled a very respectful 18-11 re-
cord. This feat is even more impressive
when you realize the difficulty of the
team's early season schedule left them
with a record of 1 and 5 after a loss to
Boston College on Dec. 15. However
the team went 17-6 during the remain-
der of the season including 9 out of 10
during late December and early Janu-
ary.

The Team's leadership duties were
effectively manned by Senior Co-Cap-
tains David Rothstein and Leon Dicker-
son. Dickerson capped off a sensational

4-year career with a productive senior season. Dicker-
son overcame some mid-season difficulties and played
some of the best ball of his accomplished career to-
wards season's end.

Rothstein achieved Co-Captain status, in spite of be-
ing a walk-on. An emotional and enthusiastic performer,
he provided the team with intensity, a contagious work
ethic and some much-needed comic relief. The team
leader off the floor, Rothstein also provided solid time
as a back up at the guard position.

The final and best looking member of the senior play-
ers is forward Kevin Kerwin. He never received a great
deal of playing time but those close to the team realize
and appreciate his highly significant contributions. Ar-
guably the team's best practice player, Kerwin's hard-
work resulted in competitive and intense practices
which were essential to the team's success. Kevin filled
a tough role and his contributions should not go unno-
ticed. As a result, he will undoubtedly be tough to
replace.

In Martzloff's absence much of the slack was picked
up by the team's 5 juniors. First and foremost of the
group was forward Rick Mashburn who gained 2nd
team all-league honors and was the only underclassman
in the league to do so. The multifaceted left-hander led
the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocked
shots where he tied the school single season record with
37.

A good deal of the scoring burden was also carried by
shooting guard Billy Walker who averaged 15 points a
contest. At 6'3" and a well muscled 200 pounds, the

purely physical aspects of Walker's game bor-
ders upon awesome. At several points during
the season he wowed the crowd with spectacu-
lar play.

The team was quarterbacked by Walkers
backcourt companion Roger Breslin. A gritty
and intelligent player Breslin effectively ran

the team as he started every game and led the
team in minutes played. He also led the team
in free throw percentage at 88% which was
also good enough to pace the entire league and
was 9th best nationally. Breslin was also tops
on the team in assists.

Coming of the bench as the league's top
reserve was forward Frank Powell. A street
smart Boston Area native, Powell plays with a
Larry-like desire and intelligence. In his re-
serve status he still managed to finish 2nd on
the team in rebounding and third in scoring.

Rounding out the junior class was back up
guard Derek Farkas. A first class individual
Farkas earned the favor of the Hart Center
crowd for the tremendous effort characteristic
of his style of play. On occasion Farkas ignited
the team with both his defensive tenacity and
outside shooting touch.

Other valuable on court contributions were
made by both sophomore John Young and
freshman Rob Feaster. Young inherited Martz-
loff's starting position at center and performed
admirably. Feaster a gifted athlete out of Chi-
cago was the league's Rookie of the Year.
Both players will be important to the future
success of the program.

All in all the season can be viewed as quite a
success. No one could have imagined the team
would go 18-11 without the on and off-court
services of seven foot Scott Martzloff for al-
most the entire season. What the team accom-
plished is a credit to head coach George
Blaney, his staff and the members of the team.

The 1991-92 Lady Crusader basketball season
had its share of ups and downs but what the
players will remember most was: what it meant
to stay TOGETHER. Through thick and thin they
were always the class of their league, sporting a
"never say die attitude" until the final buzzer
sounded.

The Lady Crusaders showed promise early in
the season defeating the fashionable Czech team
in exhibition play and notching tough wins
against CINH and arch-rival BC. This early
stretch prepared them for a challenging tourna-
ment at Northwestern where they nearly defeat-
ed the top ranked Wildcats and sent Arizona
home in need of sunshine. Ever unpredictable
league play placed the ladies at the top early as
they beat the physical cadets of Army and the
first place Fordham Rams. Although giving Penn
State a scare late in the season that they weren't
quick to forget and gaining confidence to enter
tournament play, the lady hoopsters once again
met their nemesis Lafayette, sadly ending their
season in the semi-formal round.

The season as a whole was not so cut and dry.
Together the players shared honors that set
them above the rest. Senior tri-captain Anne Da-
vis, a first team league all-star, became the
school's all time leader in assists and steals,
earning single game records in both categories
as well. Norinne Powers, being at the receiving
end of many of those passes, became only the
third Lady Crusader in history to reach the 1,000
point plateau as a junior. Powers was also award-
ed Patriot League MVP honors while freshman
Mary Lee was selected to the league's all-rookie
team.

There was also so much that didn't meet the
public eye, so much that undoubtedly made this
season a successful one.

There was the hard work: track workouts, 6
AM lifts, box push-ups, sidelines, staying low,
footfire, close-outs . . .

There were the GOOOOD times: camp, road
trips, Medieval Manor, Beth's house, Carrie's
house, Coach's house (Sorry, that was last
year!), charades, veeedeos, truth or dare, Delta
Dawn and telling our grandchildren!

Most importantly, there were the friendships:
ties that we pray will last a lifetime . . .

"Grant us this prayer, O Lord. Amen.
Amen."

The 1991-92 season was a rewarding one for the
women's varsity swim team. Their 65 record was a
result of the addition of talented freshman and many
hours of hard work. Before the start of spring semes-
ter, the swimmers traveled to their first National
Catholic Championships at Boston College. The
Cross had an impressive eighth place showing out of
eleven teams including powerhouses Notre Dame
and LaSalle. One of the highlights of the meet was
Jill Addesa's first place finish in the 200 freestyle.
Impressive swims were also turned in by freshman
sensation Coleen Lynch, placing in the Top 8 in two
events. During Christmas break the team traveled
with the men's team to Grand Cayman Island to train
for a week. The training trip was a success with the
team swimming almost 7 miles a day!

Training paid off second semester when the team
went 3-1, including an exciting win over URL All the
grueling practices of the long 24 week season paid
off at the Patriot League Championships. At the
meet, the team broke 9 school records. Co-captain
Jill Addesa, the team's most valuable swimmer, won
3 individual events-the 200, 500, and 1650 yard free-
styles and was awarded the High Point Award for
garnering the most individual points. In the 200 and
500 Jill set new school records and all three of her
performances were meet records. Voted most im-
proved swimmer, Coleen Lynch also set two new
records in the 50 and 100 freestyle and placed sec-
ond in the 200 free, giving Holy Cross an impressive
1-2 showing. Also voted most improved was Allyssa
Bates, a talented sophomore, who shaved 5 seconds
off of her best time to set a school record in the 200
butterfly and finish in the Top 8. Four relay records
were also bettered at the meet. The team of Coleen
Lynch, Martina Moore, Sara Naill, and Jill Addesa

combined to set a new mark in the 200 free relay. The 400 and 800
free relay records were shattered by the deadly combination of
Coleen Lynch, Dara Connolly, Laura Whalen, and Jill Addesa. Last-
ly, the quartet of Jill Addesa, Megan Naill, Allyssa Bates and
Coleen Lynch shaved 10 seconds off the previous mark to set a new
school record in the 400 medley relay.

In the sprint freestyle events, freshmen Beth Murphy, Deb Prol,
Martina Moore and junior Sara Naill all turned in some great
swims. Personal bests were also posted by co-captain Maura Walsh
in the distance freestyle and backstroke events. In the butterfly
events junior Laura Whalen and senior Julie Sippel finished their
seasons off in a winning fashion. Sophomores Tracey Juan and
Brenda Donahue swam to their career bests in the breaststroke and
backstroke events, respectively. Finally a fine group of freshman
composed of Dara Connally, Jeanne McNulty, Celine Toomey and
Megan Naill all made great contributions to the HC cause. Holy
Cross was well represented on the diving boards as well with a
dedicated group including sophomore Laura Boettger, freshman
Jane Brady, and senior diving captain Jen Laden.

The 1991-92 men's swim team saw an exciting
season during their second year of tough Patriot
League competition. The team was led by their
returned upperclassmen, with several surprises
coming in from the underclassmen as well.

Senior Mike Walsh whizzed through the sea-
son dominating the sprint freestyle events, with
the competitive spirit of freshman sprinter Roger
Brunelle to keep the pressure on. Senior Jim
Shea proved his strength of body and character
by being the only team member willing to brave
the 200 yard butterfly. Jim achieved this feat
meet after meet, finishing the season with a per-
sonal best time in the event, as well as in the 100
fly and the 200 individual medley.

Senior Ed Kubosiak dominated the breast-
stroke throughout the season. He also finished
with three personal best times, the 100 and 200
breast, and the 200 I.M., including an unprece-
dented six second time cut in the 200 breast-
stroke. A strong commitment to the team was
shown by senior freestyler Chris Cote who posed
as a backstroker whenever the need arose. Chris
finished out the season with an outstanding

three personal best times including a p.b. in
the 100 yard backstroke.

An outstanding transition was witnessed
by the team at the sight of senior Dennis
Collins leaving the diving to freshman sen-
sation Rob Bollo, and turning himself into a
sprint freestyler. Dennis had an outstanding
first season as a swimmer, turning in per-
sonal best times in the 50, 100, and 200
freestyle events.

Despite the difficulties incurred by having
only 13 members, the team managed a win-
ning season, with a record of 6-5. The Patri-
ot League Championships held at the close
of the season, February 27 - 29, at West
Point proved to be the most exciting compe-
tition of the year. The twelve swimmers and
one diver broke nine school records at the
meet and ended with eight top 16 finishes
and 32 personal best times.

ALMA MATER

Oh, hear thy voices one in song

Holy Cross, O Holy Cross.
Thy spirits loyal, true and strong

Holy Cross, O Holy Cross.

Thy purple banner floats on high,

While songs of praise swell to the sky,

Thy honored name shall never die,

Holy Cross, O Holy Cross.

To our son George, Twenty-one years ago, the Lord blessed us
with a special gift - the gift of you. From the day you were
born, you were so special, so smart, so sensitive, so good. It
was so much fun to watch you. As you grew, you became
your own person with your own ideas and your own way of
doing things. As you grew more, you became more
independent, still special, still smart, still sensitive, still good.
We are proud of everything about you and we want you to
know that we love everything about you, including your hair.
Our wish for you is that you will always walk hand and hand
with the Lord whose love for you will bring you true
happiness.
Loving you always, Mom and Dad

Leon, A star fell from Heaven the day you were born. Since
you were born, you have been such a beautiful addition to
our family. Now you are grown up. We can see you are a
beautiful addition to the world. You will never know how
proud you have made us. From that first special moment
when we held you in our arms, you have been the source of
our happiness. We have enjoyed watching our little son grow
up. From the day you arrived, you taught us to expect the
unexpected. You have been your own person from the start,
filled with love and life. No pretence. Never backing down . .
. We are proud of who you have become and how you lived
it. Thank you for all the love, joy, pride and blessing that
you brought into our family. You have suited us to a T. We
are very proud to be called the parents of Leon, Class of
