Dear friends,

Working to bring this volume to you has been exciting, stressful,
interesting, tiring, and entertaining. We have all learned a lot - both about the
process and about you. There are more things to think about and remember
than we ever could have imagined, but hopefully we have been able to
remember most of them and include most of you.

Over the past year, there have been long nights and tough deadlines.
We learned that staying up all night in a small room listening to the same radio
station is enough to drive anyone crazy, but we seem to have held it all
together. From our unique point of view, it has been fun to watch the
community smile and laugh and play. There were times we wished in
retrospect that we could have attended every party, game, and event, so that
we could have shared the joy found in the pictures which were submitted to us
afterwards.

We hope that you will enjoy looking back over your memories of 1 996-7
with us. This is the first in a series of letters included in the book to allow the
spirit of Guilford come through in words as well as pictures. Capturing as
much of your spirit as possible was our foremost intention.

Sincerely,
The staff of the 1 996-7 Quaker

Autumn 10

Winter 72

Spring 132

Seniors 194

Dearest Member of the Class of 2000,

We here at the First-Year Center have
found ourselves hopelessly devoted to cre-
ating the best orientation experience
imaginable. Called CHAOS (Community,
hiealth. Advisement, Orientation and Ser-
vices), it will erupt, launch, premiere, or
otherwise begin Wednesday, August 2 I .
It will educate, enlighten, elucidate (or oth-
erwise orient] you to the basics of col-
lege life. You'll learn along with your First
Year Seminar group, meet your advisor,
register for classes, and find out about
student organizations. You'll meet your
classmates, student leaders, faculty, and
college officials. While doing so, you'll
have bunches of fun. The smattering of
fun stuff we have in store for you includes
the hilarious hypnotist Chuck Milligan, a
talent showcase, the rollicking PLAYFAIR,
and the Chaotic Games. And you and
your classmates will be filmed for "Good
Morning America!" We can't wait to
meet you, and we can't wait for CtiAOS
to begin!

CHAOS Ensues

It's madness! It's anarchy! No, it's CHAOS!! For Guilford's class of 2000, CHAOS ruled supreme
during their initial days on campus. CHAOS (Community, Health, Advisement, Orientation
Services) was a new spin on Guiliford orientation. Pictured here during the weeic are Leslie Ale
getting her first letter; Anne, Cory & Chris synchronizing their watches; Megan Clancy offering
a welcome; Delphine Lincy & Ben Marks getting to know one another; and Matt Smith & an
unknown victim enjoying one of the pre-orientation outdoor adventures.

Left: Kara Youngentob gets a boost from Karl Borrie

Above: Kelly Gucfa releases her excess energy

look on, eager to get into the game themselves.
Right: Martin Davis, Rosa Evergreen, & Chris

The chaos
Continues

During CHAOS students
enjoyed a performance
by hypnotist Chuck
Milligan. At Chuck's
suggestion, the group
eagerly danced and slept.
Badger Koon told the
audience not to pee in the
pool, and safely from his
seat, Stephen Karakasidis
shov/ed his approval.

Swirling fast and furiously, CHAOS took hold of everyone
(Clockwise): Kelly Gufca & Sherry Edwards take a break from
all  of  the  excitement;  Kelly  Davis  takes  a  hold  of  Anne  Lundquist;
Jen Brown & Domonique Ames show their stuff; Ashley Reams-
Smith, Nate Fuller, Katie Downen, Lisa Deaton, Josh Feldstein
& Maggie Blair go full-tilt; Nathan Stambaugh & his group get
a little closer; and Jason Brenner mellows out.

Pope House

Dear Marian, Tiffany, and Frank,

I hope that you are all having a splendid time studying around the y^orld. Since you guysi
left this semester, Skee George, Debbie Kiliru, and Sarah Carter have moved in, and the Poptu
House tradition of community and friendship lives on.

This winter has been fairly mild, although we are still having the typical house problems..
There v/as a leak in the ceiling by the downstairs bathroom last v/eek, and Debbie and Sarah'st
heater broke down three times. The ghosts continue their incessant clanking in the heat pipes
- it just wouldn 't be the same without it!

I cooked up a storm this past v/eekend, and we've been having many intimate housa
dinners. Sarah is in the ceramics room all the time, and she's designing the Serendipity shirt,
Amy Smith is busy working on a lesson plan about adjectives for her student teaching, and
Debbie is presently drying out melon seeds for her next jewelry creation. Hillary is still pulling
all-nighters left and right, that crazy girl! The chess board is always set up in the living room,
as Nate Dog and Skee continue improving their strategies. I cut Mike's hair the other day, ano
v/e've been hanging out whenever v/e're both working late at night.

I'm v/orking on my thesis, and my classes are trucking right along. I'm hoping to go or
the New York Art Seminar for Spring Break this year. By the way, the Pope House is still e
party machine. We had a toga party this past Friday, and I think that the next one will be drac
or something. It has certainly been an eventful year. I can't wait until v/e're all back in tht
same country so we can share our travels!

Love, Amy Parry

Dear Mom and Dad,

Glad that you caught the Good Morning
America show where the Guilford Class of
2000 and I were "featured" waking up
America on the morning of the Guilford
inauguration.

The inauguration was a great gathering
of Guilford community with students, faculty,
staff, alumni and friends bringing greetings.
Bill Rogers, the sixth President, presented me
the keys to the original Founders Hall and the
charter from 1 837. The blessings were from
the traditions of Quakers, Jews, Muslims, and
Native Americans. When I looked out from
the platform, there were students standing all
around the audience and on the porch roof of
Mary tiobbs. The Senate President warned
me that the Seniors were here to help me this
year, but next year I was on my own.

Students hosted the many alumni, friends,
and guests from other institutions, and the
campus was spectacular with sunshine, and the
grand trees of the main quadrangle gave us
all the sense of the history of the College. The
week of the inauguration began with a day of
service for the whole community in Greensboro
and on campus and ended with a dance
concert, an appearance of the Boston Celtics
coached byM.L. Carr, Guilford Class of 1 973,
and a Quaker meeting.

I am getting used to everyone calling me
Don instead of Professor McNemar, and I like
it. The students and faculty are friendly,
committed, and great students.

When winter comes, I am sure I will miss
the snow falls of New England, but somehow
I'll adjust to this warmer climate. Britta is busy
working on her dissertation and our neighbors
in Milner tiall have been great about
encouraging her to study.

Britta and I are delighted to be in
Greensboro, and I pleased that I was invited
to be the seventh President of Guilford College.

Sincerely,
Don

Dear Friend,

Playing football here at Guilford
has been a valuable experience. I have
found that the lessons that I have learned
on the field hold true in everyday life. I
think that the most important concept that
I have learned from playing football here
is that a team is only as good as its
weakest link. It is possible to hove an
extraordinary quarterback and offensive
line, but if the receivers cannot catch and
the running backs cannot run then your
team will accomplish very little. By no
means am I saying that the Guilford
receivers cannot catch; Junior Lord and
William Rochelle are great receivers! The
point I am trying to make is that just like
one part of a team cannot make a team
successful, no one woman/man (or
society for that matter) can stand alone
and be truly successful. We are
interdependent beings, and we can never
be truly successful until everyone has a
equal change to reach his/her full
potential!

December 31,1996

Dear Cheryl,

John and I celebrated our sixth anniversary
yesterday. We drove from John's parents' house outside
of Cleveland to Niagra Falls. We spent the day walking
around the Falls and driving around southern Ontario
and northwest New York. They were having a warm
day-mid 20s! It was weird seeing the Falls in the
winter--the mist froze on our coats. I heard on the news
today that it's more like eighty where you are! I can
just imagine you and Caryn sitting by the pool laughing
at me for deciding to spend Christmas in the north.
Anyway, we had a great dinner at this little restaurant
we found in New York right up by Lake Ontario. It
was the best food we've had since Mom took us all on
the cruise last winter--we couldn't decide if it was the
food or if it was because we spent the whole day
walking around in freezing weather. We're both pretty
shocked we've been married for six years—the time
really does fly by!

I'll go back to work on January 6th. I still think
I'm one of the luckiest people alive to have such a great
job. The first semester has been pretty challenging
but, if it weren't a challenge, I'd surely be bored. There's
nothing quite like seeing your efforts making a
difference in the lives of students and in a college
community. (And, I still think Guilford College is one of
the greatest schools I've ever been affiliated with!) Now
that I've been with Guilford for almost three years I
feel like I'm at home. There are definitely things I miss
from working in Continuing Education at Guilford, but
I haven't regretted making the move to Student
Activities this past summer. I work with some really
great students-they are creative, hard-working, fun
and invested in the true meaning of Guilford.

I'm hoping to come visit you for about ten days
after Graduation and before the Summer Conference
business starts full force (that's what Rob and I will be
working on all summer). John will still be teaching in
May so it will just be me unless I can talk Deena into
coming too. Maybe we can go to the Keys for part of
the time and swim at the dolphin research place like
you did two years ago? We can find some cute little
hotel and relax!

I hope you're enjoying your new job— I can't v/ait
to hear more about it!

I love you!
Your big sis'.

Februarys, 1997

Baby Josh,

Ov^doan buddy! I hope that
everything is going okay out there
in the real world. We really miss
your layout bids, your fingernail
grabs, and your general all-around
hugeness. Life, hoyA^ever, moves on,
and we now have a new crop of
babies that are full of energy and
the love. These kids are amazing.
They are picking up the game faster
than us old-school babies ever did.

In years past, we only practiced
three or four days a week. This
semester we have committed
ourselves to five days of practice
and vigorous conditioning. We are
scheduled for five tournaments
(including Serendipity), and we may
even be found at a few more. If
this team comes together like I know
it can, I truly believe that we can
make it to regionals. Wouldn^t that
be a milestone! We have come a
long way since the days of four
person practices and eight person
tournaments. You really should
come out and practice with us one
day. I think you really v/ould be
proud of this group of hard-core
Ultimate players.

When I look back at the years
I have spent playing Ultimate, I v/ill
alv\/ays remeber the days of
hangovers on Saturday mornings,
endzone swi7/, buns of steel, and
frothing of the mouth. Those days
really v/ere the best days of my life
in college. Well. . . I gotta go, I think
I have a class or something.

Gritty X,
Wolf

Dear UNION,

HoyA/ insane UNION has
been this year!! Those of us
v\^ho w^en to the NACA
Conference in Charlotte,
really bonded (especially in
the linen closet), and boy
were we grateful for those
sheets during Fall 6/owouf.

Speaking of Fall
Blo^/\rout, DAKKOTA vsras
pretty funny, especially w^ith
those little co^/\^boy hats. I bet
the Papa John's man thought
we were pretty y/^eird. As we
get rolling into 2nd semster,
fond memories of "frisking"
for shoes a boy/\/ling and an
invitation back to All-Star
Lanes come to mind. Yes, we
are having to plan another
Serendipity without a beer
garden, but I'm sure it will be
the greatest anyway. But
hey, no need to stress over
little things especially v^hen
we have power sticks and
UNION dodgeball to look
foreword too!! And for those
who didn't understand this
letter - JOIN UNION because
UNION is fun.

Love,
Jeannette

Dear Page,

It's February and I'm wearing shorts.
How are those snowstorms up in Vermont? I
told you that you should have come south
for school. It's close to paradise down here.
I woke this morning to the sound of Bob
Morley echoing out a neighbor's window,
and into the quad of my dorm. It was noon,
I couldn't complain; a nice way to start off
a Sunday.

This weekend was definitely a needed
break from school and work. On top of writ-
ing three papers and taking a test, I was
busy worrying about how to send five Guil-
ford students to Cleveland for a community
service conference in March. Add to that
helping to plan a Poverty/hlomelessness
Awareness week for the spring, and you've
got one stressed-out college student. Yes,
Project Community definitely keeps me busy.
It'll all be worth it though, come May. Right
now we're trying to find some people to work
in the office next year because more than
half of us won't be here for the semester. As
for me, I'm hopefully off to Spain in the fall,
yikes.

One more week 'til spring break,
amazing. Seemed just last month I was lug-
ging my fridge and TV up three flights of
stairs and meeting up with my roommates
for the first time. Another couple of months
and I'll be a junior. I don't know if I should
be scared or thrilled that time Is flying by so
fast, but right now I'm just trying to enjoy it
while it lasts. You should try to make it down
in April for Serendipity. A weekend bosh
complete with southern hospitality, good
music, and warm weather — it can 't be beat.

Anyway, I've only got a couple more
hours until it's Monday and my work is now
screaming at me. Take it easy.

Sincerely,
Noah Wood

February 17, 1997

Dear Nathanael,

Well, we are both into the home stretch now.
I'm job hunting, you are applying to grad school,
and we're both struggling to stay focused on the
work at hand instead of dreaming about the fu-
ture. I ought to be working on my senior thesis
right now, but I'm writing you instead. It is funny
how we've kept in touch these four years. We
started out with our weekly phone calls, then moved
to E-mail, and now I'm back to good, old-fash-
ioned letters.

Did you know I wanted to transfer from
Guilford and go to school with you once? I did —
it was early in our sophomore year. Freshmen
year went well for me, but by the start of the next
year the newness of college had worn off and I
felt like it would be nice to be somewhere with an
old friend. I'm glad I didn't, though. The two
years since then have been close to perfect.

I think the improvement started when I got
into the London Semester program. You know how
long I had wanted to go to England. While I was
there, I loved everything I was doing. I learned
how to enjoy studying again, which wasn't hard
in a city that is like a giant history book. I also
developed a new kind of self<onfidence — a sense
of who I was in relation to the world and what I
was capable of doing. Football must have done
something like that for you. I used to envy you for
getting that out of your college experience since I
didn't go on to play college hockey but you did
make it in your sport.

Since London, though, I know that Guilford
gave me something that I might not have gotten
out of going to school with you or playing college
hockey. It showed me people working hard to-
gether and achieving because they weren 7 afraid
to limit their own capabilities or follow their pas-
sions. Some of my professors in particular were
like this. I'm convinced that Guilford has a spe-
cial place in the realm of liberal arts colleges, and
it is for no reason other than people like them and
the example they set for students. You know I've
always liked to learn from examples!

Sincerely,
Jeff Hartz

Dear Friends,

After several long, sleep deprived monfhs of
working on my thesis, its done. The question was
then asked of me, what I got from the entire experi-
ence. The answer is not all that simple. It was so
much more than the obscure science I taught myself
and the long hours in front of a computer. I suppose
I should explain that I had wanted to be an astrono-
mer when I "grew up" from the time I was nine years
old. In the past three years this dream has begun to
be more complicated. I began to question it, both
in terms of my ability and my desire to pursue as-
tronomy. The process of this thesis made me realize
why I had fallen in love with the science of it. I have
always looked to the night sky for reassurance when-
ever everything else in my life seems so uncertain.
On a plane, to a place I didn 7 know, the stars out-
side my window were a constant, and calmed my
panic so that I might enjoy that new adventure.

When I look up now, I see not only the vis-
ible beauty of something that is the closest I can
come to infinity, but the individual processes that
create. The more I learn about the internal work-
ings of my galaxies and stars, the greater my awe,
and the more fearsome and absolutely breathtaking
the beauty of the Universe becomes to me. I know
there are no constants up there, yet the illusion of it,
compared to my own life, provides me with a sense
of perspective. There is a constancy in my Universe,
and a commitment to something that can best be
described as a perpetuation of beauty Next time
you look up at those distant and untouchable lights
in sky, understand that what creates them, the phys-
ics, the chemistry, the science of it functions before
us on the smallest of scales. That is the commitment
I speak of, and that I admire.

So the question still remains before me, what
did I get from all this work? I learned that this love
of science and astronomy is within me, an integral
part of my perception of the world and of what
beauty is. I fell in love again, or maybe I just had to
learn that I had never stopped loving it. I discov-
ered the pure joy in sharing my knowledge with oth-
ers, no matter what level they were on. I learned to
trust myself. I discovered that the beauty in the night
sky is the closest I come to religion, and that when
all else is crashing around me, it becomes my
strength.

Love a dobrou noc,

Here comes the future and you can't run from it

If you've got a blacklist I wanna be on it

I'm waiting for the great leap forward

In a perfect world we'd all sing in tune

But this is reality so give me some room

I'm waiting for the great leap forward

No one out there understands

So start your own revolution and cut out

the middle man
I'm taking the great leap forward.

It's 2:34 for I'm gonna go to bed & wake
up to my new life.

"Pan, who and what art thou?" he cried huskily.
"I'm youth, I'm joy," Peter answered at a venture, "I'm a little
bird that has broken out of the egg."
This, or course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the un-
happy Hook that Peter did not know in the least who or what
he was, which is the very pinnacle of good form.

1 have received many gifts during my stint at
Guilford but the one that stands out the most to me
is the gift of friendship and what I will take from
those friendships when 1 leave this wonderful
place. I ha\'e met the greatest friends and they
have helped me shape my life, my character, and
my personality.

Here are some of the gifts they have given me:
Give it your all when involved in anything, be
independent, acknowledge and be patient with
different opinions from yours, make education a
priority — not a chore, always take time for your-
self, and live for the moment. These are all the gifts
that my friends have given me which 1 will take
with me when I move on.

1 lo\ e these people and would not ha\e met
them nor become close if it was not for Guilford
and its great atmosphere. Guilford has nurtured
us, fed us, watered, and has grown us so we are
complete, mature people ready to challenge the
world. Some of our great times together were in
Milner and Bryan, at the dances and cookouts, on
the court and in the classroom, during the
icestorms and Serendipity, at the $1.50 theater and
Jan's House. . . It's all a part of Guilford's gift to me.

Thank you friends and thank you Guilford. You
will be with me fore\er.

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

for my unconL]uerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Bevond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade.

And vet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate.

1 am the captain of my soul.

"Believe in the simple magic of life, in serve in the
universe, and it will dawn on you what this
waiting, peering, 'stretching of the neck' of the
creature means. Every word must falsify; but look,
these beings live around you, and no matter which
one you approach vou always reach Being."
