Forty-nine students were enrolled in the first
class when Lebanon Valley College opened its
doors in 1866. The first catalogue pictures the
original building (now South Hall) which served
as classrooms, men's dormitory, and presi-
dent's residence.

Expansion came quickly to Valley as this fanciful sketch
of the future campus indicates.

The difference between the
dream and the reality is seen in
this picture of the new Administra-
tion Building taken about 1870

In 1900 plans were once again
developed to improve the Admin-
istration Building.

■r

f

**■

Here are the resulting expansions.

The Administration Building caught fire on
Christmas Eve in 1904.

During the ensuing building program, North Hall was built as a
women's dormitory . . .

Due to this, classes were held in Car-
negie Library . . .

and in Engle Hall, which had just been
completed.

and Kreider Hall was built as a men's dormitory.

Valley's football team proudly posed with their coach in 1901.

Dramatics came early to the Annville campus; this group is the
cast from a production of Twelfth Night.

10

Parties were often held in the old gymnasi-
um in the Administration Building although
dancing was forbidden on campus until the
twenties.

The early years at Lebanon Valley
were filled with student pranks and
practical jokes. On the morning of
April 1, 1913, the campus awoke to
find that all the chapel furniture
had been moved into the center of
the campus.

12

On a freezing winter day a group of Valley
students waited for the train which would take
them to fight in World War II. This day marked
the end of an era at Valley.

When the war ended, the returning students
brought a new outlook to the campus — an
outlook tempered by the harsh realities of life
during the war. It was with this new feeling of
seriousness and scholarship that Lebanon Val-
ley College looked to the future.

AFTERWORD

As Lebanon Valley College looks toward its second century, the long-range
building program is begun by the erection of Keister and Hammond residence
halls for men.

The new dormitories are dedicated on Homecoming,
1965. Atter President Miller spoke, Dean Marquette
handed the hall keys to dorm presidents Stanton and
Mowrer. Thus came the realization of the beginning of
the building program.

The summer of 1965 also saw the razing of old Keister Hall. In its place began
work on the new chapel building. Scheduled for completion in 1966, the new
chapel IS a great accomplishment in the history of Lebanon Valley College — a
dream realized after one hundred years.

PLAN

The future of Lebanon Valley College can best be displayed by this model.
In addition to the chapel, the following buildings are slated for construction in
the near future: Fine Arts Building (3), Student Union Building (15), and two
Women's Residence Halls (20 and 21).

The Rev. Bruce Souders — for his interest in our

delivery of the book.
Neill Watson — for attention to the fruition of our

ideas.
The Rev. Mark Hostetter — for the use of the College

Church.
Mrs. D. Clark Carmean — for her help in preparing

the Foreword.
Miss Kathy Line — for knowing our problems and

always remembering us to her boss.
Richard Zamsky — for making suggestions, taking

excellent pictures, and providing laughter. But

most of all we thank him for just being "Dick".
