Farewell to Sample
President Frederick Sample, a 1952
LVC graduate, began his tenure as
Lebanon Valley College's thirteenth
president in September 1968. Under his
guidance, the College has undergone
many changes in the fifteen year
interval.
Among the many achievements Sam-
ple feels are most noteworthy are:
— developing and improving the
educational facilities and oppor-
tunities at the College
— strengthening the powers and
diversity of the faculty
— overseeing a capital campaign to
raise $10 million.
Physical improvements to the cam-
pus during Sample's tenure have been
impressive. The first improvement was
the Allan W. Mund College Center,
built in 1970. Silver Hall was added to
the list of women's dormitories in 1974.
Then, in 1975, after 15 years of plan-
ning and fund raising, Blair Music
Center, designed as one of the East's
largest and most modern centers
dedicated exclusively to music educa-
tion and performance was opened.
On February 20, 1983, the College
dedicated the $4.8 million Garber
Science Center, the first LVC building
that houses all of the natural science
departments. The modern facility's
sophisticated equipment makes the
academic offerings at LVC distinctive.
With these accomplishments s a
verifiction of his effective leadership,
Sample stepped down, leaving with
fond memories and our wish
the future.

To thee dear Alma Mater,
This ringing song we raise,
A song that's fraught with gladness,
A song that's fraught with praise.
We cannot help but love Thee,
Our hearts are full and free,
Full well we know the debt we owe,
To dear old L.V.C.

When asked what the Class of '85 Officers hoped to
achieve and their purpose, they responded: "We have
very diverse backgrounds and we work together to
culminate the various personalities of our class. We try to
unite the class with dinners, sales projects and other
events. Our focus is on our senior year . . . (and) activities
to get the Class of '85 involved with each other." This is
the purpose of class officers.

The LVC Jazz Band
and the "Put It Right Herd" Tour
The 1984 LVC Jazz Band, under the direction of Gregg Klinger, enjoyed a very active
year. In October, they presented the fifth annual 30's — 40's Nostalgia Dance. Memorable
tunes from the big band era were performed in a Hershey Ballroom setting.
In January, the band went on tour with performances in Pennsylvania, New York, Con-
necticut, New Jersey, and Maryland. Despite having to contend with snowy weather, the
band was greeted by enthusiastic audiences wherever it went.
The highlight of the year was the February Campus Concert. This year's guest soloist
was Tommy Newsom of the Tonight Show. While this was a huge undertaking, it was all
worth while as the concert was a great success.
Technical Assistant: Dean Saucier. Director: Gregg Klinger. Rhythm Section: David Baldwin, Vicki Frey, Leroy Whitehead Sax
Section: Joe "Zep" Ruocco, Scott Lefurge, David "Doc" Carter, Pat Tratnack, Darla Dixon Trombone Section: Tim Wolf, Clay Sat-
tazahn. Dale Groome, Mike May, Tom Owskinski. Trumpet Section: Jon Heisey, Rob Reynolds, Mark Whitmer, Chris Enck

FROM THE EDITOR
Before I came to the Valley, the arrival of my year-
book was synonomous with the end of a year, finals
and the last time to realize who was a senior before
graduation. Now, however, as the schedule forces the
presentation of the book in the fall, it has taken on a
new meaning. For me, and other returning students, it
is a reminder of the immaturity that we now realize was
present in our actions and thoughts of the preceding
year. In addition it painfully makes us aware that
everyone who left for the summer did not return.
Seniors, of this book, have graduated and continued
on on to the working world or further eduction. At the
time of delivery it causes a contemplation of the aprox-
imately four years spent here. For some satisfaction is
felt knowing that it was time and money well spent,
not only because of the excellent education provided,
but the friendships established between students and
faculty alike. Some may find the viewing not as plea-
sant, realizing that now after it is gone, they did not
know what was there. This is a common affliction with
many people of today's world.
It is for this reason that I must now express my ap-
preciation to some very special people: Dawn Hum-
phrey, my advisor with an understanding of the
delicate workings of this campus; Ed Patrick, Taylor
Publishing representative and possessor of a wealth of
knowledge and ideas; George Foose and Paula Walters
of TPA, excellent photographers with a great sense of
humor and a love of vanilla shakes; and my great staff,
which includes many personalities.
This last year has given me many wonderful
memories as well as a few scares - from new friends to
the LCB's bust of the Hooker's Ball. It is a time which
has passed, to be remembered but not to be lived in.
Take Care and God Bless

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Some where ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
