Winston-Salem is a city like no other, where
achievement is nurtured, and people are inspired
. . . enriched . . . motivated. Where the pace of life
allows for living, and progress comes with imagi-
nation and innovation. Where climate is as mod-
erate as costs, and education feeds art, science
and industry. Where resources and opportunities
are unlimited, and newcomers put down deep
roots of contentment, vitality and commitment.
Where commerce makes culture its business,
and economic growth is a dynamic by-product.
INTRODUCTION 1 1
f
Fertilized by the spirit of Winston-Salem, Win-
ston-Salem State University breeds an awareness
of the enduring interaction which must be main-
tained between the school and the community. This
interaction has produced magnificent Lyceum
events, participation in the Carolina Streetscene,
WSSU Day sponsored by community churches and
generous contributions to the community by stu-
dent organizations.
12 INTRODUCTION
1
As we involve ourselves in our campus, we be-
come aware of the larger community and the poten-
tial for growth beyond our campus world. Joining
other local colleges, we reach out into the commu-
nity through urban affairs to serve along with those
agencies who seek to resolve urban problems and
to make way for change and improvement. Our par-
ticipation becomes more involved as our campus
changes.

James Singletary — SENIOR
"I have a rather unique situation, i attended WSSU for two
years, left, joined the U.S. Marines for four years and now I'm
back to pursue my degree. I returned to WSSU after realizing
that a college education is an important and essential asset.
Attending WSSU has helped me to realize my potentials and
develop them. As a result, I have big plans for the future. I am
thankful that the Lord made a way for me at WSSU."
Sylvia Jackson — SOPHOMORE
"I feel that becoming a success depends on the potential one
possesses, not the institution they attend. If I work hard at my
studies and keep the faith in myself and God, I know I will
succeed."
Winston-Salem State University is culturally enriched with students from every background imagined.
They are young, ambitious, wise, and soon to be successful. They all seem to have one thing in common
— the pride they share in attending such a fine institution. This year, the Ram asked various members of
the University Family questions concerning the positive aspects of attending a small public college. The
different opinions of the randomly chosen individuals expressed a deep sense of integrity and passion.
The responses proved to be as diverse as the University itself.
128 SPEAKOUT
barter Cue — JUNIOR
"My chances in the working world are just as good as the next
college graduate regardless of the school racial precentage.
Knowledge defined by our institutions of learning is not enclosed
n parenthesis as black or white. Webster defines knowledge as
he fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity
]ained. Experience and association plus Winston-Salem State
Jniversity equals a quality education. These primary elements
,)lus with a small degree of luck, will help one find true success in
he world of work."
Shaun Mozingo — FRESHMAN
"Winston-Salem State University has helped me to gain a
greater respect for people. By attending S.U., I know I will have a
greater chance to succeed."
SPEAKOUT 129
Sebastian Mayfield — SOPHOMORE
"By coming to WSSU, I have gained valuable communication
skills, and good study habits. S.U. is situated in a picturesque
environment. While expanding my degree of knowledge, I have
grown as a person. Having a lot of patience, guts, and deter-
mination, success, is right around the corner for me."
Cheryl E. Alexander — FRESHMAN
"My chances in the working world as a graduate from a pre-
dominately black university as opposed to someone who gradu-
ates from a white college are very great. The college that one
goes to does not mean that you will be successful in the working
world. The application of that knowledge one gains determines
whether or not one will do well. I have great potential for my
future, I am just as qualified as anyone else."
130 SPEAKOUT
w
Juanita Summers — JUNIOR
"The most positive aspect of WSSU is the programs that they
have to offer such as Education. Business and Nursing. I have
gained the need to achieve higher goals, instead of only being
satisfied with a four year degree. I will be successful because I
have the determination."
Conrad Smith — FRESHMAN
"I am an out-of-state student. I chose to attend WSSU be-
cause of all the positive statements that I had heard about it. I
wanted to learn how to live on my own instead of always depend-
ing on my parents. WSSU is my home away from home. With
help from God, I know I will be a successful individual."
SPEAKOUT 131
Patrice Faison — FRESHMAN
"I feel my chances in the working world will be just as great or
greater than any other college graduate. We (as blacks) are
always having to prove ourselves as the capable individual;
there will always be competition no matter where we go. It is
not where one learns the knowledge but how well one retains it.
I'm sure my future employers won't consider where I graduated
from, but how much I achieved while I was there. I will always be
very proud to say that I attended WSSU."
David Alston — JUNIOR
"My reason for attending Winston-Salem State University was
basically, wanting to get a good education. WSSU has a wide
range of curriculum which I have found comparable to even the
largest university. Before coming to WSSU, I attended a commu-
nity college in Massachusettes I compared many majors and
found that predominately black universities are not inferior to
other universities. I have found that predominately black institu-
tions, especially WSSU, are striving to build a curriculum that all
students should take advantage of. This is just one reason why I
attended this university. I can honestly say that coming to ole
S.U. has been a big plus in my life. I feel it has helped me to grow
spiritually, educationally and socially."
132 SPEAKOUT
lebbie Dozier — SOPHOMORE
"The most positive aspect of WSSU is the people. The stu-
dents, faculty and staff are warm, caring, understanding and
riendly. I have an academic advantage due to the fact that the
:eachers are willing to go that extra mile to assure under-
standing."
Jerry Shoffner — FRESHMAN
"One of the positive aspects of WSSU, is that the instructors
care about you as a student and a person. WSSU has a great
reputation for its academics. I think my chances in the working
world are as good as anyone else's. The important thing is that
you know how to sell yourself as a worker."
SPEAKOUT 133
Janis Willard — FRESHMAN
"Coming to WSSU has made me a very independent indi-
vidual. College life has enabled me to learn some important facts
about living with people and making wise decisions on the
allocation of time."
Charles Davis — SOPHOMORE
"Winston-Salem State University has a friendly and united
atmosphere that spreads throughout the city. The pride of the
university is her successful alumni; the graduates are making
grand contributions to society. I attend this University for her
excellent nursing program."
134 SPEAKOUT
1
Anita Beasley — SOPHOMORE
"By coming to WSSU, I feel I've found myself as a black
person. All cultures, especially Afro-American is emphasized by
interesting lyceum events and other enhancing programs. This
has enabled me to find out more about my heritage."
Robert Banks — SOPHOMORE
"I feel the most positive aspect of WSSU is its willingness to
offer help and tutorial services to the student body. This is an
important aspect because it shows that the faculty, and adminis-
tration are concerned for those who have trouble in certain areas
of study. Students have access to the learning center in Brown
Hall, the writing center in the Communication Building and some
private tutoring as well. All of these areas play an important part
in the academic progress of the students."
SPEAKOUT 135
MM
Russell Miller— FRESHMAN
"This University has the surroundings that can make anyone
feel comfortable. Making a home away from home is the first
step to becoming a good student."
Dana Slade — JUNIOR
"I feel that I have gained a great sense of confidence since
coming to WSSU. I've learned to speak out against things that
are wrong. SU has taught me how to express myself. This is
quite a change for me."
136 SPEAKOUT
\
I
Dwight Bryant — JUNIOR
"The closeness of a small campus cuts down the congestion
found at larger institutions. I came to WSSU because of the
reputable academic programs. We have a well structured teach-
er education program and the campus life has activities that are
suitable for everybody."
David A. Berry — SENIOR
"There are so many positive aspects about WSSU. Singling
out the most positive is difficult. I personally believe that the
most positive aspect of this grand old institution is that it provides
a quality education in an excellent location at a reasonable cost."
SPEAKOUT 137
Sherry Thompkins — FRESHMAN
Winston-Salem State is an extraordinary university, they
teach you not to be passive but how to go out and conquer your
dreams.
!
r
Robert Robbins — SOPHOMORE
"WSSU's small size allows for individualized instruction. It's
great to know my instructors know me by name and not by
number which would probably be the case at larger universities."

COOPERATIVE
EDUCATION
Cooperative Education is a program which re-
lates academic study to the real world work. The
student participants in Cooperative Education aug-
ment and enhance their academic preparation with
off-campus, work experience related to their major
fields of study. Students enrolled in the Co-op pro-
gram gain confidence, maturity, success-
orientation and an understanding of the profession-
al, practical world of work. Thus Co-op is, for the
students, a "gateway to their professions."
For the participating companies and agencies,
Co-op offers the opportunity to influence the direc-
tion of higher education, become directly involved
in the academic career of future employees, and
observe their work before professional contracts
are signed.

How do students remain in school and handle a
job at the same time? No one knows exactly but
we have many students who have to cope with
that problem. Having a part time job helps extin-
guish the high cost of a college education. With
inflation soaring, many undergraduates find it im-
possible to function without some type of income
and some students have to support themselves
while in school. Without a doubt, Rams have infil-
trated the working community in every imagin-
able occupation.

ACTION SPEAK LOUDER
THAN WORDS
Annette brings the old saying life, "action
speaks louder than words." Let her actions
show that she works as hard in the books as
she does on the basketball court.
A native of Davidson, N.C, she transferred
from Chowan Junior College and has proved
to be an asset to the Lady Rams basketball
team. She majors in Physical Education and
maintains a 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. At the same
time, she managed to average 12 points and 6
rebounds per game.
Last year at the peak of her collegiate career,
Annette was named CIAA Female Scholar
Athlete of the Year; Tom Harris Outstanding
Female Athlete Scholar and awarded a medal-
lion.
This goes to show that work and play go
hand-in-hand. "CONGRATULATIONS AN-
NETTE, KEEP UP THE HARD WORK."

PROJECT STRENGTHEN IN JAPAN
During the month of September, Winston-Salem
State University presented papers at an international
research conference. The school was the only under-
graduate university invited to the annual meeting of
the world's top immunologists, the Reticuloendothe-
lial Society. The Tenth International Congress was
held in Ito, Japan, where fifteen countries were repre-
sented along with one predominantly black institu-
tion of higher learning, Winston-Salem State Univer-
sity.
Dr. Wilveria B. Atkinson and five students wrote a
paper about their research and presented it to other
scientists at the symposium. The students who
attended were Phyllis A. Bass, G. Bradley Atkinson,
Candis L. Black, Jacquese O. Black, and Terri L.
Hamilton.

PHI BETA LAMBDA
.«
Dear Rams,
This yearbook is not just a book of pictures placed on a page; it represents the life and blood of WSSU, the students
and faculty. As a member of this family I have grown and matured with the guidance of Miss Cassandra V. Douglas
and Mr. Beaufort 0. Bailey, for without their patience, caring, understanding and love I would not have pulled through.
In my eyes no one could have asked for a better staff than the one I was blessed with. Their willingness to work hard
and put in extra time has helped to produce a book I know you will be proud to show. This book represents a family
effort and without each member of the family pulling together it would not have been completed.
I would like to thank the Ram yearbook staff for their dedication and hard work for making this book a success.
And special thanks to Richard Bailey, Stanley and Madison Harding (The Hardy Boys), Brent Wilson, Valarie Goins,
Rita Archer, Cynthia Jewell, my Mom and Dad and my lovely friend and co-editor Regeania McQuaig.
To the "Class of 1985" I would like to share with you a verse my Mom shared with me:
Figure it out for yourself
You were born with all the greatest have had
With your equipment they all began
So get hold of yourself and say "I CAN."
Look them over, the wise and the great
They take their food from a common plate
With similar knives and forks they use
With similar laces they tie their shoes
The world considered them brave and smart
But you're all they had when they made their start
You are the handicapped you must face
You are the one who must choose your place
You must say where you want to go
How much you will study the truth to know
God has equipped you with life; you see
But he lets you decide what you want to be
So, figure it out for yourself
You were born with all the greatest have had
2 hands, 2 arms, 2 legs, 2 eyes, and a brain to use
If you would be wise,
With this equipment they all began
So get hold of yourself and say "I CAN."
Unknown
Yours truly

hind your desk in order to help the students at regis-
tration time, for without your help things could have

talk to. We've learned how to look behind that stern
look in order to see your earing heart. THANK YOU
for showing your school spirit at all times. You seem •
to be a proud father of your baby Rams. This en-
courages and motivates us. THANK YOU for being ,
our bridge over troubled waters. You stepped in at
the time of need and gave us something that we
never expected — a father, a mother, a friend and a
leader all rolled into one enthusiastic Acting Chan-
cellor — Dr. Haywood L. Wilson, Jr.
May the goodness in you continue to shine. GODI
BLESS YOU.
