We have made the decision to further our education at Winston-Salem State University
for various reasons. I'm sure it's a decision that was given a great deal of thought. How we
utilize our time here will determine the rest of our lives.
My fellow Rams, as we go through our daily routines we should value every second,
minute and hour of each day. If you use your time wisely, much can he accomplished. For
example, the founder of this institution. Dr. Simon Green Atkins, had a dream that he was
determined to see realized. First he prepared himself by taking advantage of the opportunity
to attain a solid education. Mr. Les Brown once said, "It is better to he prepared for an
opportunity than to have an opportunity and not be prepared." With diligence and good
time management Dr. Atkins, with the help of God and others, established and nurtured
what we are enjoying today, WSSU. This university is evidence of what we can achieve if
we use our minds and the time, both of which God has bestowed upon us. So, let us bear
in mind that TIME IS LIFE.
My deepest thanks go to God who instilled within me the determination, knowledge and
patience to get the job done as editor. Also, special thanks to the assistant editor, Lora
Poyner, who was always by my side and came to my rescue "just in the nick of time." I
cannot go without expressing gratitude to staff members who came together as a family and
made this book possible. I appreciate the patience and understanding from my advisors, Mr.
Beaufort Bailey and Ms. Cassandra Douglas. Last but not least, I extend special thanks to
the students, faculty and staff for their cooperation in helping to capture
THE GOLDEN TIMES AT WSSU

Dear Fellow Rams:
Serving as your Student Government Association president this academic
year has been a pleasure, and I thank you for your loyal support during my
tenure.
As college students, we sometimes tend to over-emphasize the unpleasant
moments of our four-year stay — the petty irritations of filling out forms, the
inconvenience of waiting in long lines, living quarters not quite as comfort-
able as those we left back home. When Winston-Salem State becomes your
alma mater, the trying times will be replaced with the excitement of home-
coming, the gratification of commencement, and other pleasant
recollections of Ol' State U.
As you remember your four years here and appreciate the intrinsic value of
the important and eventful experiences, the 1 988-89 Ram Yearbook will no
doubt be the spark that brings back the bright faces of your classmates, the
caring guidance of your instructor, and the scenes that made this year of
college life real and meaningful.
Sincerely,
jW^ t-t-cujLu.

The spirit of WSSU is remarkable. Its faculty and students are recognized for taking an active part uio,
in making it the best possible. Of all demands to which college students must respond, the pursuit m\
of academic excellences is by far the most exciting. It is of utmost importance to establish goals eniK
emphasized with high ideals and driven by willpower and belief in ourselves. As implied by our Wei
theme it is essential that we learn to value our time. Lost time is never found again. The memories ', tliisi

.i of our days here at Winston-Salem State will stand out from the rest of our experiences. In choos-
ing WSSU we had in mind how we would spend our time. Somehow we would find time for acad-
emics, cultural and social times. We will never forget because golden times bring golden memories.
. We have set as our aim to portray our life at the university in order that we may be ever reminded of
'i-this most important phase in our growth and development.

CLASS HISTORY
As members of the class of 1989, we have traveled a long road to reach our goal. The class motto, "We can, we
shall, we will succeed," has finally become a reality.
The year of 1985 was one of thrill and excitement. Cleon Thompson became the eighth chancellor of Winston-
Salem State University and the arrival of the class of 1989. With determination, pride, and much spirit, we began
our freshman year on a good note. Shawn Davidson was elected as our class president, Drs. Dennis and Pamela
Felder were selected as outclass advisors and Rita Miles Ms. Freshman. We joined such clubs as the mighty march-
ing RAMS, the RAM yearbook, the University Choir, and numerous tjther organizations in order to give them
some new input.
In 1986 the rising class of 1989 began to standout more. Our t)wn Michael Dickerson became MR. RAM and
Haven Anderson was elected as our sophomore class president, with Terry Hankerst)n as Ms. Sopht)more. We
began to strive for more academic excellence and achieve the goals we set out for. We had the opportunity to
encounter such famous personalities as Timmy Newsome, alumnus, who plays for the Dallas Cowboys, Louis
Farrakan, alumnus and political activist, and Dizzy Gillespie, a famed trumpeter.
As juniors we had progressed farther down the road of success with Shawna Sessoms as our class president and
Mary Marshburn as Ms. Junior. During this year a new change came across the univetsity with the renovation of
the Anderson Center and Blair Hall. A newly landscaped main entrance was added to the campus also. Many
changes in our community as well helped us to become more aware of what was happening in the world. We were
all happy to know that Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday celebration became a National Holiday. Claremont
Avenue, which is directly in front of K.R. Williams Auditorium and F. L. Atkins, was changed to Martin Luther
King, Jr. Drive, which runs from 9th Street to Clemmonsville Road. Once again a famous personality and one of
the most renowned Broadway shows graced our campus. The Reverent Jesse L. lackson, St. , direcn>r t)f c^peration
PUSH, was here for a voter registration drive. Everyone on the WSSU campus was elated to ha\e him at our
unix'ersity. Mamma 1 Want to Sing, one of the best Broadway Musicals ever was presented to a sold out crowd.
Homecoming 1987 was a memorable occasion for the sultry songstress Anita Baker and the sophisticated lady
Natalie Cole appeared on our Homecoming shows.
The WSSU football team captuied the ClAA Championship with Head Coach Bill Hayes. The Championship
was won for the late assistant football Coach Wiley Harris.
Our Senior year started with a bang for we realized we had succeeded. We had grt)wn intellectually as well as
academically. Many of us had attained our personal goah and were looking forward to the day we would proudly
walk down the aisle, for we had achieved our goal.
Now at the top of our ladder of achievement, Yolanda Williams, the senior class president, helped us keep
abreast of all we needed to do. A large number of us participated in Graduate and Professional Schools Day, and
the Job Fair.
Socially, we still enjoy "Doing da Butt" but we have learned that life isn't always a fast party without hnrd work
but a slow waltz with much dedication.
As freshmen we knew you could succeed and as seniors we knew we had. As we depart from "Ole SU" let's
remember we entered to learn and since we have learned LET US NOW DEPART TO SERVE.
Esther M. Horton, Senior Class Editor

Almost There
Let's hear it for the Juniors, we are almost there! All of
the hard work, determination, and dedication is starting
to pay off. The long road towards graduation had been far
from easy, but we the juniors are beginning to see all of
the hard work come to a sweet end; graduation is right
around the comer.
Some juniors may see graduation day as being so close,
yet so far away , and well it is because there are so many
things that come before, after, and in between gradu-
ation. Juniors are often times filled with indecision be-
cause we have reached a crucial point in our lives. The
journey is coming to a close and decisions must be made.
Will I go to graduate school.' Will 1 co-op.' What com-
panies will I apply to.' These questions must be asked by
the juniors because they are strategies and plans that will
shape and influence the rest of our lives.
We, have a lot of expectations placed on us. We are
placed in harder and more demanding courses because
we are concentrating strictly on our major and minor
area of study. We are expected to know exactly what we
want after graduation, so that we can begin to prepare for
the next phase of our lives. We are faced with questions,
problems, and situations that are difficult and sometimes
frightening, however we are able to overcome all because
we know that nothing will stop us, for we are almost
there.

Finally, we the sophomore class of 1990 at Winston-
Salem State University have risen from zero class hours
to some class hours! We are proud to have successfully
completed our freshmen year.
We, the sophomores of 1990, have estahlished our
majors and some of us have already participated in the
honor's day program. A variety of the sophomore class
have joined several organizations from this prestigious
university such as: athletics, yearbook staff, class offices,
greek fraternities/sororities, and many other or-
ganizations. In order to participate in these extra-
curricular activities, time management is crucial.
Yes, Winston-Salem State University, the sophomore
class of 1990 is on the move academically, socially, and
rising to the top.

What is life like for a college freshman? He is away
from home, in most cases, for the first time in his life. He
is not only away from home, hut also away from im-
mediate protection, parent's rules, and familiar sur-
roundings. He is cast off into a new world, a different
world, where his immediate welfare and survival will he
up to the decisions he make for himself. He soon finds
that there are many decisions that must he made and sev-
eral questions that must be answered. How do I study?
What cluhs or organizations should I join? How do I go
about keeping a good GPA? Is pledgmg a fraternity or
sorority for me? How do I manage my time? When do I
begin to plan for graduate school? All of these questions
are important and lead to an outcome that will have a
vital impact upon the future of the individual. The fresh-
man, thus, soon learns what it means to stand up for the
beliefs and values he treasures in order to make it and he
himself m the process. There is the desired to try new
things, meet different kinds of people, and maybe engage
in a totally new lifestyle. Sometimes the freshman wants
to fit in and be a part because the feeling of being an out-
sider is threatening in this vast new surrounding. Other
freshmen desire to separate themselves from the crowd
and fmd their own little niche to steal away to. What
about academics? Is it on the freshman's agenda? For
some freshmen, yes, academics is on the agenda. They
know that excellence starts form the very beginning and
continues throughout. For others, it must take a back
seat, for now. There's so much to do and so many things
to be a part of. There are suddenly lots of girls for lots of
boys and vice versa. And there's . . .
Well, the list could go on and on about the choices,
decisions, and directions that are put before a freshman
that he must choose from. Basically, "It's A Different
World" that has a new beginning who's end will not be
the end, but the begmning of a new life.

THE WSSU CHOIR
The Winston-Salem State University Choir enjoys a
long and distinguished history as the institution's official
singing organization. Even in its earUer years, when it
was known as the Winston-Salem Teachers College
Acapella Choir and sang under the direction of
conductors hke Noah Ryder (who organized the Music
Department) and James Dillard (who led the choir for
close to three decades), it was known for its excellence.
And through the years, as times have changed and the
institution has both changed in character and evolved in
its role in North Carolina higher education from a small
teacher preparation college for Blacks to a
comprehensive, baccalaureate institution of higher
learning, the choir has appeared locally, throughout the
state, and before audiences in the Mid-West and Eastern
United States. It has been seen on regional television
and has sung in concert with the Winston-Salem
Symphony. (Scenes from The Ufe of a Manyr: To the
Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, }t. , 1 987 and
excerpts from Vesperae Solemnes de Confessore K339,
1988). During the 1987-88 academic year the choir sang
for the North Carolina Music Educators State
(Convention, appeared in the North Carolina Collegiate
Choral Festival, and by special invitation, in the
American Negro Spiritual Festival (Cincinnati, Ohio),
where it won First Prize and received critical acclaim.
Said Cliff Radel of the Cincinatti Enquirer, "... most
consistent . . . The two Alabama choirs . . . had their
flashy moments, but Winston-Salem was the brightest
. . . rich and precise . . . Notes and words began and
ended with distinction . . . sweet and dignified." This
fall it has been invited to sing at the Centennial
celebration of Hall Johnson's birth in Glassboro, New
Jersey.

Pete Richardson
Pete Richardson takes over the 1988 Rams after spending the past eight
seasons as an assistant at WSSU under Bill Hayes.
Richardson graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.S. in education
and an M.A. in guidance and counseling. Richardson played four years of
varsity at Dayton as a defensive back, earning all-American honors. After
college, Richardson went on to the National Football League where he played
four seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
With his playing days behind him, Richardson embarked on his coaching
career. Coach "Rich" as he is referred to by his players, spent two years as head
football coach at Dunbar High School in Dayton, Ohio. Richardson earned
Dayton Coach of the Year honors in 1977 and was vice-president of the Dayton
Coaches Association in 1978.
Richardson came to WSSU as the offensive backfield coach. He later became
defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. When Bill Hayes accepted the
North Carolina A&T head coaching job this year, the opportunity for
Richardson to step in presented itself. Richardson plans to make the most of
that opportunity by leading the Rams in continuing their strong tradition of
football success.

DECEMF"" !
^ '' T W
AN INCREDIBLE CHANGE —
Aren't you glad that we finally let the
bells stop rocking? Of course you re-
member those orange, plaid, polyester
bell bottoms. You were very uncool if
you didn't wear them. Oh yeah, men!
Let's not forget the red polyester but-
terfly-collar shirts that we wore with
our bell bottoms to the house parties.
We were SUPERFLY!
Fashions have come a long way since the 1970's for both men and
women. Have you noticed how the length of skirts has gone up, then
down, now back up again? The ladies dug out the mini skirts that their
moms wore in the 60's. Then they went back and grabbed those granny
dresses that covered the legs ail the way down the ankles. Now at the end
of the decade they are wearing them just above the knee. What's next
ladies? Men stay tuned for the 90's
Ram men have become more sophisticated and distinguished in their
wardrobe. There is nothing like a nice pair of wool blend slacks, a nice
turtleneck or colorful button-up sweater and suave leather shoes. We're
talking tough!
175
% * *
Don't forget the platforms or roach stompers ^ ^
that were worn in the early 1970's. How we
walked in those things, I'll never know. If 1 re- '^■
member correctly, the soles were pretty heavy
and thick.
176
Every now and then, we all awake in the morning feeUng
sporty. The perfect outfit is a nice Adidas or Fila sweatsuit
and a nice pair of . . . well, we can choose either Adidas,
Lotto, or Nike tennis shoes to make our feet comfortable for
those long walks across campus. No more jeepers for us!
To complete that 70's look, we fashioned our hair into shoulder-wide
afros. 1 am sure we will never forget how the hair was "picked out" and of
course the "blow out" to make the afro nice and round.
178
The 1980's, particularly 1986 'til now, have allowed creativity to play
Its role in fashioning the hair. Ladies have flipped it up, whooped it up
t(i this side and that side, and trimmed it here and there. Men have
become artistic and decided to carve shapes, figured, names and numbers
in their hair. 1 can't help but wonder if baldness will become fashionable
for both men and women. Who knows? In the 1990's, we might think it
to be ridiculous to have hair on our heads!
Cars have changed drastic-
ally! In the 1970's, we drove
the Pintos, the Fiats, VW
Bugs, and those long, long
Cadillacs. The styles and
bodies were tough and durable
because they made of thick
medal and steel.
180
TTie cars of the 1980's have become if anything smaller and more costly. The smaller the mdrc- conveniL-nt. Now we have m place of
the VW Bug the Jetta, Fox, Quantum and Golf. For the Cadillac family, well it has become smaller and more sporty. Notice the 1989
model!

THE 1980'S
1980 — "There were more than enough world
shaking events for any 12 months in 1980. A

impact as nature did too, in the form oi
drought, earthquakes and volcanic destruction.

whethet from tape decks on the sidewalk or
elaborate stereos in clubs, bystanders plunge
into acrobatics called break dancing. Rap even
had a fashion code ot loosely laced sneakers
and cap-bills flipped up and a rich slang that
gives tags ot nicknames to everyone.

America's most enjoyable soft drink.
1983 — Chicago elects first black mayor,
