Dear Students:

The Ram is our family album, replete with
snapshots and formal photos of some of
life's happiest and most memorable times,
herish and preserve it as a personal time
capsule of your college days.

For some of you. this uolume completes a
set. As you move on to graduate school or
into a career. I wish you continued success.
As an alumnus, you will have a new and in-
creasingly vital role to play in the university.
For others, the 1990 Ram tells another tale in
a continuing saga. To these students. I offer
encouragement to continue to pursue your
academic goals. The rewards are well
worth the effort.

Finally, as you peruse these pages in the
years to come, be reminded that they are
bound by love — love for an institution that
goes beyond geography and generations.
So. for as long as you live and wherever you
go, this is always home.

With warmest regards.

Cleon F. Thompson, Jr.
Chancellor

By the year 2000. Winston-Salem State University plans to
haue become that major university that was emerging in
the 80s and 90s. Toward that end. the university s
long-range goals include the following:

•fulfilling our potential as the Western Piedmont's regional
university

• attracting more qualified students from within our
community

• strengthening our endowment for merit scholarships

• attracting and retaining qualified faculty and staff

• stimulating economic growth by making the community

more attractive to industry

• continuing to fuel the community by contributing dollars
directly to the local economy

• constructing new energy-efficient dormitories

• building a university center that will serve as the hub of
student activities

• constructing new classroom and laboratory buildings,
which, of course, will enhance academic programs

• ultimately, emerging as a major force in the mainstream
of community life as both leader and servant in the
vitally-important field of post-secondary education.

I

Greetings Fellow Rams!
Again another gear has
passed, and
Winston-Salem State
Uniuersitg is still one of
the most prestigious
predominately BLACK
universities in the nation.
It has been my pleasure
representing you as
President of the Student
Government Association
for the school year
1989-1990. This year has
been both a rewarding
and a learning experience
in my life.

Although 1 will be leaving
WSSU this May. I will
always be supportive of
this great institution of
higher learning. We, the
student body, should
always uplift and praise
Winston-Salem State
University wherever we
go. This includes
encouraging other youth
to attend WSSU and most
of all supporting the
institution financially once
we become alumni of
WSSU. Therefore, let us
continue to be proud
members of the WSSU
family now and forever.
Again. 1 thank you for
your support this year,
and 1 wish each and
everyone of you success
in the future.

Sincerely.

Wanda White

.-:■ ■ :

On Friday evening. May 5, one of the most severe
storms in our area's history ripped its way through
Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The
Winston-Salem State University campus was hit —
and hit hard.

As with most tragedies we encounter in life, the
devastation of the May 5 storm was not without its
benefits. Indeed, if the response of our Ram Family to
the storm is any indication of their team spirit,
dedication and drive, we can certainly rest assured we

have what it takes to meet the very toughest of
challenges we encounter in the days to come.

Fourteen hours after the May 5 storm, we held the
97th Commencement of Winston-Salem State
University. Because the storm knocked out power to
many areas of the city, we had to move the ceremony
to the coliseum parking lot. Nevertheless, our 306
graduates were not denied the ceremony they
deserved after four years of hard work and a
commitment to their studies.

SENIOR CLASS
HISTORY

"DREAMERS OF TODAY

ACHIEVERS OF

TOMORROW"

Approximately 543 eager new freshmen
entered WSSUfrom different locations dur-
ing the period of August I6th-25th, 1986.
The first thing we did as a class was to elect
officers. The elective slate consisted of Joel
Mclver, President; Coretta Archie. Vice Pres-
ident; Maria Downey, Treasurer; Stephanie
Hooker, Secretary and Danny McSpadden,

Chaplain. We got to see Alva Carlisle repre- " ' x ~ "

serif us as Miss Freshman in our first home-
coming coronation. On the Sunday of homecoming, the freshman class hosted a popcorn sale and
showed a movie. We sadly regretted the death of one of our classmates, Shandra Michelle Reid To end
our successful freshman year, we elected our sophomore class officers.

The sophomore elective slate consisted of Danny McSpadden, President; Coretta Archie Vice Pres-
ident; Katrena Neal, Corresponding Secretary; Demetrice Glover and Monica Mitchell class repre-
sentatives. Our class gave the first "Da Butt Jam" during homecoming week. Karen Welcher Miss Sopho-
more, represented us well in the coronation. The football team won the C1AA tournament it had been
seven years since the football team had won the tournament. Jesse Jackson came on our campus and
gave a moving and informative speech concerning his presidential campaign as well as to get African-
Americans registered to vote. To close out our sophomore year, we elected junior class officers

Our junior class officers consisted of Pamela Lane, President; Demetrice Glover, Vice President- Patrice
Gibson, Treasurer; Eugenia Williamson, Recording Secretary; Tonya Green, Corresponding Secretary-
Sonja Solomon, Parliamentarian and last but not least, our lovely queen, MelanieFord, Miss Junior The
Mock Beauty Pageant sponsored by the junior class during homecoming week was a great turnout
The pageant consisted of several male students dressed as females. They were judged on talent casual
and evening wear. Our junior year was also the first year that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s birthday be-
came a national holiday. It was celebrated on January 19, 1987. Stemming from this event Claremont
Drive in Winston-Salem was changed to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. George Bush was inaugurated
President of the United States during our junior year. On May 5, 1989, the day before commencement
exercises for the class of 1989, Winston-Salem was unprepared for the damaging storm that hit But
nevertheless, the commencement was still held. Our campus suffered severe damages. Residence halls
classroom buildings, the auditorium and student union suffered from broken glass and other damages
Over half of the trees that once shaded us were uprooted or damaged. A great number of students suf-
fered damages to their automobiles and other personal property. Our junior year was ended with a
luncheon that was given by the newly elected senior officers.

As we begin our senior year, we all look back and realize that our past struggles, hardships, andpain
were all worthwhile. Our attention is now directed and focused on graduation. We are informed on up-
coming events by our senior class officers: Melanie Ford, President; Milton Parks, Vice President; Monica
Mitchell, Corresponding Secretary; Katrena Neal, Recording Secretary; Jackie Baker, Treasurer Pamela
Murrill, Parliamentarian; Rahold Davis, Chaplain; Michael Dickerson, Sergeant-at-Arms and Miss Senior
the lovely Miss Joy Lyons. The Student Government Association (SGA) was made aware of the
strengths of the class of 1990 when Wanda White, SGA President: Eugenia Williamson, Miss WSSUand
other senior class members bombarded the executive cabinet. The senior class hosted a "Lets Get it
Started Jam" to start the year out right. The class ofi990 will be the first graduating class to hold its com-
mencement exercises in the new Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The class of 1990 will end
its tenure here at Winston-Salem State University by sponsoring a trip to the Bahamas.

ANISSA LA'SHAWN MARTIN

JUNE 23, 1971

OCTOBER 12, 1989

TRIBUTE FOR ANISSA

ILL LEND YOU FOR A LITTLE TIME

A CHILD OF MINE HE SAID

FOR YOU TO LOVE WHILE SHE LIVES

AND MOURN WHEN SHE IS DEAD

SHELL BRING HER CHARMS TO GLADDEN YOU

AND SHALL HER STAY BE BRIEF

YOU'LL HAVE HER LOVELY MEMORIES

AS SOLACE FOR YOUR GRIEF.

WE'LL SHELTER HER WITH TENDERNESS.

WELL LOVE HER WHILE WE MAY

AND FOR HAPPINESS WE'VE KNOWN

WELL EVER GRATEFUL STAY

BUT SHALL ANGELS CALL FOR HER

MUCH SOONER THAN WE PLANNED

WE'LL BRAVE THE BITTER GRIEF

THAT COMES AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND.

COACHING STAFF

Pete Richardson begins his second year as head coach at WSSU as the defend-
ing CiAA champs. The Rams finished 10-2 under Richardson last season and de-
feated Virginia State University 13-9, to capture their second straight CIAA title.

Before taking over the Rams head job in 1988. Richardson spent eight seasons
as an assistant to Bill Hayes and acted as assistant head coach.

Richardson graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.S. in education
and an MA. in guidance and counseling. He played four years of varsity football
at Dayton as a defensive back then went to the National Football League where he
played four seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

After retiring from playing football. Richardson embarked on his coaching
career. He spent one year as defensive backfield coach at his alma mater. He then
accepted the head coaching job at Dunbar High School in Dayton, Ohio. He
earned Dayton Coach of the Year honors in 1977 and was vice-president of the
Dayton Coaches Association in 1978.

After two years in Dayton, Richardson came to WSSU as the offensive backfield
coach. He later became defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Richard-
son accepted the head coaching position at WSSU last year and plans on keeping
up the strong Ram tradition of football success.
