Keep Main Street working

We work at the Internet
Archive, just one of thousands
of companies across America
that have benefited from
TANF/Emergency Contingency
funding.

We are 145 formerly
unemployed parents,

out of over 100,000 jobs
across America funded by
this program. We are working
today to build a free digital
library of 1 million books for
every school in America.

We will be unemployed
again on Oct 1st,

along with 100,000 others
unless TANF/ECF is extended.

We want to keep our jobs!

Contact: Robert Miller, Internet Archive / robert@archive.org

To Whom ft May Concern,

I am writing to you about the jobs now program. Because of this program, I have
been employed for the past 6 months after a year of unemployment.

I was one of the lucky people who while unemployed was able to continue to pay my
rent and feed my child. But because I am an only parent, both my son and I had to
forego a lot.

Now chat 1 am working again, T am getting a handle on the bills that piled up and
have restored my credit, which is very important because I hope to buy a house
sometime in the future and now will be able to qualify for a mortgage.

On an immediate level, 1 am not an anxious wreck when I spend $20 to take my son
to Toy Story or out for pizza, lie is away at sleep-away camp right now for the first
time and not only was I able to pay for the camp, but buy him equipment he would
need. Although ] did think twice about buying hiking boots, a day pack, flippers,
goggles and a duffle back, I ultimately decided, because I am now employed through
the Job Now program, I could do it.

Please extend this program so I may keep my job, be a productive member of society
and a mom who can provide for her son.

Laura Milvy

1] What were you doing before you got this job?

I had been unemployed for over one year. I returned to school to gain new skills and learn

new technologies. Even though I had applied for many positions Tor which 1 was qualified, 1

rarely received even a response.

2) How has this job affected, changed, or heJped you?

This job has not only allowed me to provide for my wife and daughter, it has given me new
skills and a sense of contributing to an organization the benefits millions of people all over
the country and the world, J have met many new people, made friends and regained a sense
of place and purpose.

3] Is there a standout experience you have had since you started working here that you can
describe for us? This could be the moment you were able to do something with, or buy
something for your kid[s) that you couldn't do before; a personal, professional or social
benefit; or any other experience related to having this job that way very positive.
Quite simple, to be able to look at my daughter every morning and tell her that daddy is going
to work has been the most fulfilling experience. To then also be able to help people at work
and know that our organization is both used and appreciated by so many people is gratifying.

4} If you could give one message to Congress about extending this program, what would it

be? ^

JobsNow is the archetype for how a program can actually create jobs, allow people to work
and resu I 1 i n civic benefits as a result of that work. There are a lot of very happy peopl e at

Internet Archive. They have a sense of purpose and take pride in their work and being able to
provide for their families. This is a program that w r orks.

lobs Now and Internet Archive are helping me restart my life, catch up on bills, hold my

I want my son to continue to know that you have to earn your way in life and not to

1 am proud that there is the Jobs Now program to keep families supporting themselves.
I think many companies should contribute to such a fund for future betterment of our
society. J am here working with Internet Archive, which is contributing to the society by
having books available on line, worldwide. I work with men & women of different
backgrounds & life experiences with the same goals; to take care of themselves & their
families and to take a step into a possibly new career. J also see the family bond her at
work with everyone helping each other. This makes me proud and optimistic for future
economic situations,

J also had a chance to represent Internet Archive in Washington D.C., in front of the Vice
President joe Biden.

4) If you could give one message to Congress about extending th is program, what would it

The Jobs Now program offer opportunity not laziness. The Jobs Now program offers a
chance or 2* d chance for people to get paid training, begin a career or start a new career.
This is something that came about at an economic down and 1 think would have served us
well as an economic depression prevention.

3) If you could give one message to Congress about extending this program, what would it

J didn't want to get on welfare to gel a job. 1 just wanted to work and support my son and

mc. And to listen to the debate in the news about this program 1 put more money into

the economy than I am taking out

As lowly as congress may think that we are, and as badly as they are treating us by playing
this game, or by ending the program at the end of the September, we arc a lot better than

that.

It just goes to show that the haves will have more, and the have nots will have even less,

1 suppose that when all of the house and apartments become empty that we will be able to
turn them into jail cells, due to the spike in unemployment, which automatically equals an
inflation hike for the working class [pardon me.... Former working class].
