Pictures at an Exhibition MODESTE MOUSSORGSKY

(played without interruption)

Moussorgsky, who was an intimate friend of
Victor Hartmann, the eminent Russian architect
and painter, visited an exhibition of his water -
colors and drawings at the Academy of Arts, St
Petersburg c Desirous of paying tribute to his
friend, Moussorgsky composed this set of piano
pieces (l87^), and the following explanatory a-
nalysis is taken from his own description:

Promenade : In this and the following prome-
nades, the composer portrays himself walking,
now right, now left, now as an idle person, now
urged to go near a picture.

I. Gncmus: A drawing representing a gnome,
dragging himself along with clumsy steps by his
little twisted legs.

Promenade

II. II Vecchio Caste I Lo: A castle of the Mid-
dle Ages, before which a troubadour is singing.

Promenade

III. At the Tuileries: Children disputing af-
ter their play. An alley in the Tuileries Gardens
(Paris) with a swarm of nurses and children.

IV. Bydlo: A Polish wagon with enormous wheels
drawn by oxen.

Promenade

V. Ballet of Chickens in their Shells: A draw-
ing of Hartmann's for the staging of a scene in
the ballet, "Trilby".

VI. Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuyle: Two Polish
Jews, one rich, the other poor. One of them, the
portly one, walks square-toed, like a dog with a
pedigree; the other, the thin one, hurries along,
dwarfs himself, twists about, like a puppy. He re-
volves in a funny way, courts a look from the oth-
er, begs.

Promenade

VII. Limoges — The Market Place: Market women
wrangle furiously.

VIII. Catacombae: In this drawing, the artist
portrayed himself examining the interior of the
Catacombs in Paris by the light of a lantern:

(a) Sepulchrum Romanum (Eoman sepulchre); (b) Con-
mortuis in lingua mortua (in death the tongue yet
speaketh) .

rX. The Hut on Fowls' Legs: The drawing showed
a clock in the form of a hut of Baba-Yaga, the fan-
tastical witch, standing on the legs of fowls. Mous-
sorgsky added the witch rushing on her way seated
in her mortar.

X. The Great Gate of Kieff: The artist's design
for the construction of an entrance gate for the
city of Kieff, conceived in the massive, old Rus-
sian style. The music suggests a colorful proces-
sion moving through the huge doors while the great
bells ring.

Three Caprices, Op. 16 Feldc Mendelssohn-Bartholdy

No, 1 in A Minor (to Miss Anne Taylor)

(From a letter written by Miss Taylor to a friend)

CoED-DU, North Wales
The piece which Mr. Mendelssohn wrote for me was suggested by
the sight of a bunch of carnations and roses. The carnations that
year were very fine with us. He liked them best of all the flowers,
would have one often in his button-hole. We found he intended the
arpeggio passages in that composition as a reminder of the sweet scent
of the flower rising up.

No. 2 in E minor (to Miss Honoria Taylor)

(From a letter written by Mendelssohn to his sisters)

London, September 10, 1829

My stay at the Taylors' was one of those times which will never
vanish from my mind; it will put me in a flowery mood, and I shall
always recollect the meadows and woods, and the pebbly brook with its
babbling. We have become friends, I think, and I am so deeply fond
of the girls, and believe they like me too, for we are happy together.
Moreover, I owe them three of my best piano compositions. When the
two younger sisters saw that I took the roses and carnations in earnest
and began to compose, the youngest came with little, yellow, open bells
in her hair, assuring me they were trumpets, and asking me whether
I could not introduce them into the orchestra, as I had talked the other
day of wanting new instruments; and when in the evening we danced
to the miners' music and the trumpets were rather shrill, she said that
her trumpets would do better, so I wrote a dance for her — to which
the yellow flower-bells played.

No. 3 in E major (to Miss Susan Taylor)

The Rivulet

For the middle one I composed "The Rivulet", which had pleased
us so much during our ride that we dismounted and sat down beside
it. This last piece, I believe, is the best of its kind that I have done; it
is so slow-moving and quiet, that I have played it to myself every day,
and have got quite sentimental over it.
