PREFATORY.

The object of the following pages is to present, in a con-
densed form, a Record of the Caverxo Family, in its sev-
eral branches, from the immigration to this country of its
progenitor, Arthur Caverno, down to the present time. How
far the author has succeeded in this design, must be left to
the judgment of those who are equally interested with him
in it.

It is not the object of the author to write the history of
the family : this \yould require more time and material than
he is able to command at present. But it is hoped that,
should such a history ever be called for, a good beginning
will be found in the present effort.

That mistakes and deficiencies will be found in this sum-
mary, is altogether probable. They could hardly be avoid-
ed, considering the way and manner of obtaining the statis-
tics herein contained. The author has done what he
could to make the record complete, though, in some instan-
ces, as will be seen, he has failed to reach the necessary data.
He asks that families and individuals who find defects in
their record will take an early opportunity to inform him by
letter of the same, so that should another edition of the
pamphlet be called for, or the history of the family be written,
these defects may be remedied.

The author acknowledge^, with special fiivor the assistance

L

which he has received from several individuals who feel an
interest in the undertaking, and have contributed to the prep-
aration of the work.

That many now living, whose names are here recorded,
will never see or be seen by the author in this life, is alto-
gether probable. But should he be so happy as to meet all
his dear relatives with the blood-ransomed throng whose
names are written in the Lamb's book of life, his joy will
be fulL Such, dear friends and relatives, shall be the
prayer of your unworthy servant to the end of life.

The Author.

RECORD.

Traditiox says that Arthur Caverno (sometimes written
Cavano, Kavanaugh, &c.,) from whom originated the Cav-
erno family in this country, was born of Scotch Irish descent,
in the north of Ireland, early in the 18th century, supposed,
about 1718, and immigrated to this country about 1735, or
between that time and 1740. It does not appear that he was
accompanied by any of his relatives. Subsequently to his
arrival here, he worked as a ship carpenter in Boston.

Fanny Potts, who became his wife, was also born in Ire-
land about 1T20. She was the daughter of Thomas Potts,
a surveyor of lumber on the Cork river. Havino- lost his
wife, the mother of Fanny, he married again, but unhappi-
ly, it seems, as they soon parted, and he came with young
Fanny to this country about the time that young Caverno
did. He had three sons, namely, Thomas, Henry and John,
who were sea-captains, and who found homes in Boston.

There are two versions of the story relating to the mar-
riage of said Arthur and Fanny. One is, that they met at
a well in Boston, wdiere they went to get water, and that
there they saw each other for the first time. There an ac-
quaintance was formed which subsequently ripened into court-
ship and marriage.

The other version is, that Arthur paid attention to a young

lady in Boston who was an associate of young Fanny, and
who had been courted by a young man of sea-faring life,
but who was supposed to be dead, as nothing had been lieard
from him for a h)ng time. The young man, however, re-
turned. The young lady, feeling a preference for her former
suitor, went to Fanny and prevailed on her to go to the
ship-yard where Arthur was at work, and inform him that
he need not call again, as her former "beau " had returned.
"Very well," replied Arthur, "then I will take her spokes-
man." Fanny blushed, and retired. The reply, however,
was a success. Thev were married in Boston in 1741.

After their marriage they moved to ^N^ewfoundland, where
John Caverno was born. Here Arthur followed fishins',
while Fanny, being an "expert" with the needle, was em-
ployed in repairing fishermen's garments. They did not,
however, remain there more than a year or two, but returned
to New England. Mr. Potts, the father of Fanny, having
married a widowed lady in Lee, N. H.,and settled there^Arthur
and Fanny, with their infant son, came and dwelt with them.
Several other children were born unto them there, most of
whom died of throat-distemper.

When John Caverno became of age, he married Sarah,
eldest daughter of Jeremiah Tebbets of Barrington, N. H.
They lived in Lee for a while, then moved back to
Sarah's father's, in Barrington, where they spent several
years. Here Molly Caverno and Jeremiah her brother were
born. Having purchased a tract of land in the westerly
part of Barrington, near Northwood line, in a sec-
tion of the town long known as Canaan, and having erected
their little cabin there, they moved into it * 'without door or
window." All was a wilderness around ; but, by the vigor-
ous efforts of father and son, the land was gradually cleared
and brought into a state of cultivation. The farm thus

prepared has always since been known as the homestead of
the Caverno family.

In the mean time, Eleanor, daughter of Arthur Caverno
and sister to John, married a man by the name of Michael
Runnels, who bought a tract of land adjoining that of John
Caverno, afterwards known as the Jonathan Dame place.
Here Runnels and wife lived and died.

Subsequently to the settlement of John Caverno in
Canaan, Arthur, his father, moved from Lee, and
settled on a lot of land since known as the Libbey place,
adjoining the Runnels' farm. Here Arthur and Fanny lived
for some time ; but, on becoming aged, an arrangement was
made for them to live with their son John, with whom they
spent the residue of life. Arthur died in 1795 ; and Fanny
in 1797. Both lie buried on the Canaan homestead.

Besides John and Eleanor Caverno, there was a dau^hter
of said Arthur and Fanny whose name was Molly, born in
1744. She lived with her uncle, Thomas Potts, in Boston,
where she died of consumption in 1764. There was an-
other dauohter whose name and the time of whose birth
are unknown. She married a ^^ illiams of Canterbury.
Another daughter's name was Betsey, but nothing farther is
known of her.

The record of John and Sarah Caverno's family stands
thus :

John Caverno,— b. 1742 ; d. May 29, 1806.

Sarah his wife,— b. 1746 ; d. July 19, 1833.

They were married in 1763.

Their children are as follows : — _

on the Canaan homestead.

Sarah Caverno married Moses Biizzell, of whom an ac-
count will be given in place.

Abii2:ail Caverno married Ebenezer Hanson, who also will
be noticed in place.

The same may be said of Judith, Susannah, and Betsey
Caverno, with their husbands, &c.

From these sprang all the families named in the following
cataloij^ue.
