1990 REGINA MARIS
Salve Regina College
Newport, Rhode Island
To The Class of 1990:
In his classic work The Prophet the poet Kahlil Gibran
wrote: "When you part from your friend, you grieve not.
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his
absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from
the plain." During the summer of '86 you came to New-
port "to get acquainted" with Salve Regina College dur-
ing Orientation. Over the years the shared experiences, the
classes and meetings, the parties and games, the joys and
sorrows of human living, transformed those acquaint-
ances into friendships. You have completed the chapter
entitled "college years" and begun to record new experi-
ences in the books of your lives.
I hope that this yearbook will provide you with a
record of the years you chose to spend with all of us in
Newport. Cherish the memories, the good times and the
learning you shared with friends at Salve. While you may
have parted our company, you really have left a part of
yourselves with us. We know that because, as the poet
says, "that which we love most in you is indeed clearer in
your absence". For that we are grateful to you.
On behalf of everyone at Salve Regina College, I wish
you well in your future endeavors. On a personal note I
wish to thank the yearbook staff - particularly Erin
Forbush the 1990 Editor, Frank Troiano the Business
Manager, and Class President Eric Weliczko, for their
outstanding efforts on behalf of the Class of '90. May
your lives continue to be blessed with new friendships
and new loves throughout the years to come.
Best to all of you,
John Rok

A MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS PRESIDENT
-
To my fellow classmates:
By the time you read this, undoubtedly, thete will have
been some great changes in our lives. Some of us will be
in graduate school. Most of us will hopefully be working
full-time. And, yes, some of us will even be married. But
as much as things change some things will remain the
same, such as our memories of each other and all the
great times we had together.
We are a very special class. Once so eager to receive an
education, we spent one cold night in December on the
front steps of Ochre Court waiting for registration. We
have an energy, a spirit, unmatched by any other class.
Students, alumni and visitors will walk past Wakehurst
and look at the plaque and trees we planted, and they will
wonder, "What special group of people did this?" At the
time it was a noble gesture as a group to show our love
for a missed friend. But what we did together was leave a
legacy of hope and class unity for generations of students
to come.
So now we are alumni. Everyone going in their separate
direction. However, there are still memories to be made.
Every five years, beginning in 1995, we will reunite to
catch up on old friendships, to introduce our new fam-
ilies, but mostly to laugh and reminisce about the four
wonderful years we all spent together.
On behalf of Kurt, Dave and myself it was a great
pleasure to work with this class. For now we will not say
goodbye, but, see you at the reunion.
God keep you all,
Eric J. Weliczko
'90 Class President

We cannot tell the precise moment when
friendship is fcrmed. As in filling a vessel
drop by drop, there is at last a drop which
makes it run over; so in a series of kindnesses
there is at last one which makes the heart run
over.

The
Salve
Mission
As each of us received our acceptance letter from
Salve, we thought our toughest college hurdle was
over, at least so far. We had made it in, now we had
four years to make friends and balance a few classes
while investigating Newport.
Imagine our surprise when we discovered that on
top of all this, we were expected to "become our
best selves."
Not quite sure how to fulfill our "Salve Mission",
many of us began cramming our courseloads and
taking part in clubs. We began to see changes in
ourselves. Things came together and our friendships
became stronger.
As the years progressed, we discovered that we
aren't the same people. We have all changed. And
without even realizing it, we've fulfilled our mis-
sions and found our best selves.
-Beth Sharkey

Our Best Selves . . .
NEWSFLASH! Over 30 cou-
ples were found lying on the floor
of Ochre Court Ballroom on the
24th of February at 3:00 p.m. After
20 hours of toe-tapping and hand-
clapping, bodies began dropping in
exhaustion. Starting at 7 p.m., on a
Friday Salve students energetically
moved their feet to the DJ's music
as many onlookers cheered them
on. Throughout the dancathon,
couples dressed for 13 themes,
ranging from tie dye and toga to
sports and dressSalve. Thanks to
the support of various businesses,
energy revivers were donated from
such places as Pepperoni Express
and Dunkin Donuts. It's an extra
incentive to keep their feet moving,
First and second place prizes were
awarded to the dancers for each
theme. As the hours wore on, the
on -lookers became few, dancers
began dropping and feet began
slowing. The snowfall at dawn,
along with a few brisk winds com-
ing thru the balcony doors served
as a "second wind" for the tire-
some bunch. Ball tossing, and lim-
boing along with vivacious mid-
day spectators brought almost 20
couples to their final hour of vic-
tory. Their efforts raised $3000 for
Lucy's Hearth, a homeless wom-
en's shelter.
"No, you may certainly NOT cut in," cries Dannielle McDuffee as she and her
partner Brian Holliday begin their first hour.
She's a grand 'ol flag, but a tired looking
one at that as Brian Holliday and Moira
Grogan march to "American Pie" during
their final hours at the marathon.
"Excuse me sir, is this the Delta House?'
asks Pete Marino.
On their toes, Jennifer Knight, left, and
Nicole Bernabo, enthusiastically keep on
dancing.
Am I seeing double? Carla
Spino and Donna Frawley are
keeping in rhythm during the
"Look-alike" theme.

The Salve Regina College Women's
Soccer Team.
Meet the Seniors:
Pam Marescalchi played a mean center half-
back position even after suffering a compound
fracture of the arm in her freshman year. She
was a leading scorer, and a Captain her senior
year.
Tracy Bembridge, also a Captain, was only in
her second year at Salve, a transfer from Mid-
dlesex Community College. She played right
wing and displayed a fierce right foot.
Marielle Van Noort, a four year starter here
at Salve, and Captain this year. Even though
plagued by a knee injury, she continued to keep
playing center halfback and sometimes fullback.
Junior Tina Ripanti shows some fancy footwork on the
field.
Junior Barbara Ann Kgan keeps the hall at her feet, and in
her control.

ble force on the cross country team this year.
She set a school and meet freshman record

College invitational meet. She was Salve's top
runner, and has placed the highest in all the
team's races this year.

Salve's Ladies Of The Court, A Force
To Be Reckoned With.
The Women's Basketball Team finished the
regular season with a remarkable record of 17-4.
The Lady Newporters achieved this success
with help from unique players and a unique
coach.
Lynn Sheedy, a former All -American at
Providence College kept the team on their toes.
Sheedy's team lost only one game in Conference
play during the regular season. Chris Julius, Jane
Lewis, Tracy Giroux, and Lori Jakob helped
build a team that won three Conference Cham-
pionships in their four years. With the gradua-
tion of these seniors, Sheedy reflected back on
what it all meant. "These four seniors have been
very special, since they arrived at Salve, our
program has experienced a great amount of
success because of them".

Spirit To Spare.
Asking any college team to change styles in
mid -season, and still produce, might be unrea-
sonable; but that's what Salve's men's coach
Mike Raffa requested this year, and the New-
porters responded. After losing big men Kent
Katter (6'6") and Chris Unsworth (6'5") to
injuries before Christmas, Salve scrapped its
running game and opted for a controlled half-
court offense, which led them to an overall
record of 10-12, and a Conference record of 6-
5.

Graduation
The sun rose early that day
dancing upon the water
on its way up.
The tent flaps played
in the wind.
Chairs sat solemn
awaiting the crowd.
Cap and gown hung anxiously
in the room
as the sun hit the tassel
it breathed life to its form.
Memories of the past
were misty now.
"What lied ahead
was all on their minds.
finally the hour had arrived.
Seagulls flew above
singing their praises.
'Hot a seat was empty
nor a space anywhere.
< E?(citement fitted the warm air.
Women held tissue
while fathers held cameras
and a look^ of pride.
I walked along the
edge of the tent
and spotted you in your
cap and gown.
I also held tissue camera and pride.
It had been along road.
(But a path not a road
Sill we 've done all we 've shared.
'The time had come to say goodbye
but never lose sight of the
memories we shared.
