expla:n^atioi^

rpHis work was begun to collect such records as
were still obtainable of the family of William
Plowman, of Gosport, England, and print them for
the use of his descendants. In the searches that
followed, so many persons of the name were dis-
covered in all parts of the country that it was
decided to include all of whom anything could be
learned, tracing each family as fully as possible,
and bringing the records down to the beginning of
the new century. Many changes must have taken
place in tbe various families while the work has
been in progress, and it is hoped there will be found
in each some one interested to correct and continue
the records on the blank pages left for that purpose.

Into such work errors cannot fail to creep, but
the best endeavor has been made to give the records
as furnished, and, in case of variance, to take the
voice of the majority.

The compiler desires to express his appreciation
of the interest shown by his correspondents, the
help so freely given, and the patience with which
they have awaited this publication, delayed beyond
all expectation.

From histories of Baltimore it appears that Plowman Street exist-
ed as early as 1740, but for whom it was named has not been learned.

In 1760 there were two Jonathan Plowmans in the citj'. One is in"] ^79/***

arrived in 1759, bought several acres of ground, and built at N.E. cor.
York (now Baltimore) and High Sts. In 1763 Messrs. Plowman and

Plowman was one of the managers of a lottery to raise funds to com-
plete market-house and purchase fire apparatus. In 1706 a Jonathan
Plowman was one of nine commitisioners to lay out an addition to

tions of symi)athy and co-operation to citizens of Boston in their effort
