PREFACE.
The Registers of Tarrant Hinton, down to 1812, are
contained in five Volumes, as follow : —
Volume I has been sadly mutilated, many pages having
been entirely cut out, as detailed below. It is made of
parchment, measuring 13 in. long by 6| in. wide, but has
no cover. Baptisms commence in 1545 and continue to
1601, when two pages have been cut out which contained
entries from 1601 to 1621. From 1621 they continue to
1718, when from 17 19 to 1728 baptismal entries are
wanting. Burials range from 1545 to 1688, when nine
pages have been cut out containing entries from 1688
to 1728. Marriages from 1585 to 161 2 were likewise
included on these nine pages, so that they commence
only in 1613 and continue to 1714. From 1714 to 1729
they have also been cut out.
Volume II contains seventeen parchment leaves, and
measures 13 in. long by Sin. wide, and is bound in parch-
ment. The Baptisms, Burials and Marriages are mixed
together from 1729 to 1754, when the latter are continued
in a separate volume as is usual at this period. The
Baptisms and Burials are continued from 1755 to 1783.
Volume III is a thin book of four parchment leaves
of same dimensions as Volume II, and is bound in calf.
It contains Baptisms and Burials from 1783 to 1799.
Volume IV contains seventeen parchment leaves used,
the remainder being blank. It measures the same as
Volumes II and III, and is bound in calf and lettered
vi Tarrant Hinton^Register.
outside TARRANT HINTON— Rev. T. Diggle— Rector—
1799. It contains Baptisms and Burials from 1799 to
1812.
Volume V measures 16 in. long by 11 in. wide, and
contains the usual printed forms of Banns and of Marriages.
The former, from 1754 to 1809, occupy eleven pages at
the beginning of the Volume, the remainder being unused,
and further on the Marriages from 1754 to 18 12 occupy
twenty-two pages, the remainder being unused. This
Volume is bound in calf.
The transcript of this Register was made by the late
Rector, the Rev. Alfred Stilgoe Newman, in 1895, when
he expressed to the Editor his great desire to see it
printed. His widow, to whom the thanks of the Society
are due, placed the manuscript in the hands of the Parish
Register Society for this purpose. By the permission of
the present Rector, the Rev. E. J. Heriz-Smith, the printed
register has been collated with the originals.
