[Mar. 1848.] HOUSE— No. 61.

Commontuea^Ufi of JUai^fiiatigui^ettfii.

Secretary's Office, Boston, March 2d, 1848.
To the Speaker of the House of Representatives :

Sir: — I herewith transmit, to be laid before the Legislature,
the Abstract of the Annual Reports of the Attorney for the
county of Suffolk, and the District Attorneys, required, by the
Act of 1844, (chap. 87,) to be prepared by the Secretary of the
Commonwealth.

I have the honor to be.

Very respectfully.

Your obedient servant,

W. B. CALHOUN.

DISTRICT ATTORNEYS' REPORTS. [Mar.

ABSTRACTS,

SUFFOLK COUNTY.

The Attorney for Suffolk returns twelve hundred and ninety-
five complaints. Where several persons are joined in one bill,
unless there is something to distinguish them either in the ver-
dict, or in the proceedings had upon the complaint, it is reckoned
as but one indictment. But where the result of the trial is dif-
ferent in regard to the different persons, each is considered, in
this Abstract, as a party to a separate indictment.

Sixty-five of these cases were continued actions brought for-
ward from the docket of 1846, and disposed of at the January
term of 1847.

In addition to the amount of business referred to in the follow-
ing Abstract, the Attorney reports, that he has attended to thirty-
three cases in the Supreme Judicial Court, and to one case in
the Court of Common Pleas, in all of which the Commonwealth
was a party.

Upon the application of the Governor, through the Secretary
of the Commonwealth, the Attorney for Suffolk reports, that he
has given thirty-eight written opinions relative to the arrest of
fugitives from justice. He has also given written and oral
opinions, at their request, to the Secretary, Treasurer, and Ad-
jutant-General of the Commonwealth, in several important
matters.

The Attorney reports that he has paid over to the Treasurer
of the Commonwealth the sum of two thousand seven hundred
and fifty-four y'g'V dollars, collected from the penalties of recog-
nizances, and that the Sheriff of Suffolk has paid to the
County Treasurer, in 1847, the sum of eleven thousand and
seventy-nine ^^^^ dollars for fines and costs received by him in
the Municipal Court of the City of Boston.

DISTRICT ATTORNEYS' REPORTS.

[Mav.

NORTHERN DISTRICT.

This district includes Essex and Middlesex.

The attorney makes no return of the criminal business tran-
sacted at the December term of the Court of Common Pleas for
the county of Essex. Owing to other official engagements of
the attorney, the court appointed another gentleman to attend
to his duties at that term, and no return of the business has
been made to him.

The attorney says, in his report, " The returns are some-
what imperfect, but are substantially accurate. By them,
it will be seen, that the amount of labor performed by me, has
been quite large; it occupied my undivided attention for thirty-
two weeks, besides other occasional calls."
